Toro Sushi, blue fin sushi, Halibut Sashimi, Albacore Sushi, rolls,

I live in Mira Mesa, and there's plenty of sushi closer to home -- but I still make the drive up to San Marcos for Sushi On, because honestly nothing local compares. It's just the best sushi around, hands down, and they're consistent about it every single time I go. Look at this spread from my last visit -- toro nigiri with a little caviar, clean sashimi, seared rolls with tobiko and microgreens, even orchids tucked in for good measure. Every piece was fresh, nothing tasted like it was covered in sauce to hide anything, and the portions were generous. I've never had an off meal here, which honestly says a lot after however many visits at this point. A big part of that comes down to Mark, the owner. You can tell he's genuinely hands-on and cares about the food going out -- it's not a place coasting on a good name. And Christina, who usually takes care of us, is always so warm and welcoming. She remembers regulars, she's quick with a smile, and she just makes the whole meal feel easy. If you're debating the drive, do it. Worth every minute for food this good and this reliable.

My boyfriend and I were deciding between 3 new places for sushi. After some deliberation, I felt drawn to try this place. It was so extremely worth it. The prices are so good for the quality and portion that you get here. Most places are charging upwards of $20+ for lower quality fish. I can't wait to come back and try out some happy hour items. Service was fast and nice. It was nice to watch the soccer game while eating. It's a cute little spot and can't imagine how busy it gets for dinner!

Great staff and super casual atmosphere. Food unfortunately is meh. Raman was bland and sushi was over riced with overuse of "imitation krab" meat. Actual sushi was limited and small portions and meh freshness. Pass on this one.

Sushi On kept spamming my husband IG feed and yes, it definitely worked. He couldn't get it out of his mind so we decided to order for DoorDash with some friends. We ordered the chirashi bowl, hamachi Kama, sashimi combo B, and 3 rolls (forgot the names) but we were limited bc one of our party is allergic to avocado. Most rolls have avocados. We did request no avocado on anything and they were pretty good except the chirashi had avocado. But the other rolls didn't. I must say the raw fish was good. No fishy taste and no bad food reaction. Their sashimi slices were thick and sliced correctly. It was good. Next time, we're gonna go and actually eat at the restaurant. But from our to go order, it was an IG success.

Stopped in for lunch since it's real close to work. Tried one of their premium rolls called the Salmon Lover for $23. The snow crab & salmon belly is fresh. Whatever sauce that was drizzled on it complimented the roll well. I have been here once before and overall it's an average sushi restaurant in a busy shopping center. 2 sushi chefs and 1 server. Not sure how many people were in the kitchen. Decent place for a quick bite.

The food is better than most spots around here, but the experience was just okay. The sushi roll came with ginger and wasabi, however, the hand rolls (which were packed separately) did not. As for the food, the lemon fresh roll and the eel hand roll were good, but I'll skip the tuna hand roll next time.

The servers here were extremely nice. They communicated well with us to get us seated in a timely manner. However it took a usual amount of time to get our orders placed and we also had some small items missing when our order came out, but the servers were still attentive. The food itself was great! I love the diversity in the menu and the quality of the fish itself was excellent. This place is quite small and it gets packed, but they do a good job at staying efficient. The owner was really nice too!

A worthy place for happy hour sushi. This tiny restaurant offers standard rolls ranging from basic to ultra fancy. The rolls are probably middle of the road as far as quality, but they'll definitely satisfy a craving. Don't underestimate their cheap basics like Philadelphia rolls, their prices are affordable and will fill you up nicely. - My favorite roll is the Lemon Flash. - Their yakisoba noodles are tasty. - Happy hour is definitely the best time to come.

Super Mario with chopped habanero, so beautiful!

This has been our regular spot and the food is always fresh and delicious! Bento boxes have plenty of food and sushi rolls are so beautiful. Each visit I try something different from the various bento boxes, spicy soup, bulgogi, spicy pork, and of course sushi rolls. Not to mention their amazing salad dressing! They remember you and make you feel special at every visit!

My wife stopped by for an early dinner. The place was not busy yet and we almost enjoyed the spot all to ourselves. I would say the experience was average all across the board. Decor-very typical sushi looking joint. Again, average. Service-good service.

Came here for my first time having sushi. The young waitress was super helpful and kind. Food was delish. The chula was my favorite of the two items I got. I will definitely be coming back to try more. I had the lunch special, two rolls for $20, definitely worth trying.

What a bummer! Came in a few weeks ago for the first time at almost closing and had such good service so decided to come back as I wanted this place to be our regular. Definitely not anymore. I had to update review. The service I received today was bad. After a little bit I was just matching their energy- which I felt so bad about cuz that's not who I am. We were greeted when we came in, another table was there and it got busy. Ok noted. However it took 30 mins to get my toro lover roll. My son's food all came out, then my second roll came out but not my first roll- which I had to ask about and it came last. I ordered that roll first before anything too. By this point I didn't even feel like eating anymore. Ruined my appetite. Nobody ever checked on us, walked by our table so fast every time. we put our empty cup of water waiting at the edge hopefully for subtle hint that we wanted a refill and ignored us until my son said to me, they can't even refill our water? Then the guy I'm sure heard, came up to us and asked if we wanted a refill. So I guess remember you gotta be the one to initiate when you need something. They walk by our table and seemed so busy so I didn't want to disturb but hoping they would notice I am trying to get their attention. had the look on me kinda like I'm done and hoping they would stop to ask if we needed anything. Nope. Ignored. But if you call them, they will stop to address you. I just didn't want to seem like a bother and hoping they would check on us. Anyway once I paid and getting up to leave, they want to be nice and say thank you. Where was this energy when I was dining there? I even left a 15% tip.

Literally hands down our favorite sashimi spot in all of sd north county. If you haven't been here I feel sad for you.
    Marie T.

The best sashimi spot in all of SD north county in my opinion. The rolls are yummy too and the service is fantastic. So damn good

Our party of two waited about 20 minutes on a Friday night with no reservation. It was quite busy that day with many other tables waiting to be sat. There are a lot of options on the menu, ranging from cooked items to sushi and rolls. After placing our order, it took only about 10 minutes before we received the first dish and everything else followed. We ordered a roll the sashimi set a hand roll and also a bowl of ramen. Their salmon and engawa was tasty, but I wouldn't say their fish is the freshest or have much flavor to them. Unfortunately, we had an issue with our spicy tuna roll (there was a piece of metal found inside). I'm sure it was just overlooked. But service was very friendly and accommodating. They immediately remade our roll and also provided some complementary dessert. The service here was quick and friendly. I appreciated it given how busy the restaurant was.

My first trip to Tabu Sushi was during the pandemic, and I don't remember enjoying it that much. But, I also attributed those faults to the take-out experience; nothing survives packaging, travel, and dining 30+ minutes after plating and still maintains its peak level of flavor. So, I vowed to eventually come back and give Tabu another shot. First off, I kind of dig the interior. For some reason, it gives me 80's vibes; Tech Noir, but with a few plants and higher ceilings. Dive bar sushi restaurants have always been a thing I've enjoyed, and Tabu just skirts that line. My son and I came here for dinner and they seated us close to the entrance, sunlight pouring through the windows in the late afternoon, making the atmosphere bright and open. I started with an Oyster Shooter, while not the best of these I've ever had, it still had that freshness to it, the hint of brine and citrus overtones, while not being too oily or fishy. Pretty good. My son did most of the ordering, supplying the table with a Dragon Roll, Baja Roll, and an Atlantic Sea Roll. These were all okay. Sometimes the fish used was mealy. Sometimes the technique was loose, causing the rolls to easily fall apart. But, each was still enjoyable with the tastes being satisfying, if not really overly impressive. The true surprise was the Bubba Gump Roll. The sautéed shrimp on top had a fantastic bite and delicious taste to them. And the mixture of avocado, lemon, cucumber, cilantro, and chili powder, all of it was a excellent blend of crunchy and smooth textures, spicy and cooler flavors, and fatty and acidic notes. After everything else we had sampled, I was not expecting something this good when I ordered it. Still, with as good as that roll was, it was not enough to elevate Tabu Sushi past a strong three stars in my eyes. Above average but only just. With as many other sushi restaurants nearby that I prefer, coming back here may not be in the cards for me. But, I would still say it's very much worth a try if you're nearby and hungry.

Some of our favorites so far are the Escondido roll, Dynamite roll (definitely one of our top picks), Dragon roll, and the asparagus tempura roll. We'll sometimes add a spicy California roll too. On colder days, I love getting their miso soup or spicy tonkatsu ramen, you can even switch out the protein for an extra charge, which is a nice option. My husband usually goes for the chicken katsu curry, and I really enjoy the beef yakisoba or the teriyaki salmon. So if you're in Escondido definitely give them a try!

If waiting were an Olympic sport, this restaurant would be taking home the gold medal every year…read more I've given this place chance after chance over the last year, hoping each visit would be the one where everything finally clicked. Instead, it's become a masterclass in patience. The employees seem to have discovered the secret to unlimited break time because every visit they're either in the front or the back enjoying conversations while customers stand around wondering if they've accidentally become invisible. When I judge a sushi restaurant, I keep it simple: miso soup and a basic roll. If you can't make the opening act exciting, I'm probably not sticking around for the encore. Unfortunately, the miso tasted like someone waved a seaweed packet over hot water and called it a day, and the basic rolls had all the excitement of eating cardboard with a gym membership. Then there's the outside food policy. Apparently, if your toddler dares to nibble on a chicken nugget from next door while the rest of the family orders sushi, the Food Police are ready for action. You could walk in wearing a tuxedo made of hundred-dollar bills and order the entire menu, but one tiny bite of outside food? That's apparently the culinary equivalent of a federal crime. The strange part is that the restaurant actually has potential. The problem isn't the building... it's the complete lack of urgency. Watching customers wait while staff casually chat feels less like dining out and more like watching a sitcom where everyone forgot they're supposed to be working. After a year of giving this place more second chances than a reality TV contestant, I'm officially done. If you're in Escondido, do yourself a favor: spin around, point in a random direction, Google "sushi near me," and you'll probably find a place where the staff remembers customers exist. I genuinely wanted to like this restaurant. Unfortunately, the service disappeared faster than the flavor in the miso soup.
