My Pop chose to take my Mom out to a special dinner for their anniversary. I was invited to join and we both had no idea where the surprise destination was. He told us it was a casual spot and to come hungry. What I didn't expect was that this would be such a memorable and elevated dining experience! Sushi Ran goes way back; established during the 80s and a pioneer for sophisticated Japanese food in the Bay Area. No wonder they have high honors from Michelin, Zagat, and so many other associations. We approached the charmingly intimate restaurant and were greeted by the owner and host. The owner and my Pop have known each other for decades and it was a pleasure getting to talk to him. You feel a sense of zen coming into the restaurant--quiet, minimalistic, with the sushi bar well lit and viewable. All service staff were attentive, respectful, and very personable. We were checked in by all, laughs shared, and food and drinks flowing. Each item on Sushi Tan's menu is well thought out, carefully crafted, and beautifully presented. We started our evening off with a bowl of Awase Miso and Chilled Edamame. The miso was basic but good--slightly salty and warm. The edamame was fantastic with the thick sea salt flakes. My Mom got the Chirashi and my Pop ordered their Noodles choosing Soba as his option. Both raved and fell in love with their dishes. For my dish I was curious about their rolls, going for the Kaisen Futo-Maki. My mouth is still salivating. The fish melted in my mouth, extremely fresh, and was of high quality; I could eat this roll on repeat. My Pop surprised us with Omakase as well. Each nigiri was carefully curated by the sushi chefs. Simply divine, elegant, and appetizing. Yes we were stuffed but dessert was a must. The dessert menu isn't posted so be sure to ask the waiter if interested! Complimentary ice cream to celebrate the special occasion was well received by my Mom. My Pop enjoyed his Miso Cheesecake stating it was one of the best. I was surprised with a Green Tea Coconut Mochi Cake which hit all my marks. I will not forget this experience as it was one of the best dining experiences with my family. In this day and age, there's a lot of competition for quality sushi in the Bay Area. You won't be disappointed with the long standing Sushi Ran in Sausalito off Caledonia Street with street parking nearby. They serve a fusion of traditional Japanese cuisine and vibrant Pacific flavors. I have heard many great things about Sushi Ran and how it's the best Sushi spot in Sausalito. I like the ease of online ordering and curbside pick up. I arrived early, park outside and give them a ring. They come out with your meal. I ordered a chicken teriyaki rice plate for my hubby and I ordered 3 types of sushi rolls: CA, veggie and soft shell crab. I don't eat raw so Im glad to know there are plenty of cooked options for me to order. The sushi came in a cute lil bamboo box and was so beautifully displayed! I have never had such care from any sushi place especially for take out. Every bite was delicious and I over ordered. I had half saved for lunch the next day. Reliable neighborhood stalwart. IMO, best thing on the menu isn't even sushi, but rather the cod. It is excellent -- comes out super warm, extremely buttery, and bursting with miso flavor. Served only with arugula, it's a minimalist dish because it can get away with it. So good. For sushi, most recently ordered the kaisen futo maki, which isn't my understanding of a futo maki in the traditional sense, but is a wide roll filled with a few fresh fish. It's excellent if you like a big, fish-forward roll without all the sauce, toppings, etc that often accompany "special" rolls. Ambiance is super pleasant -- tucked away on Caledonia, the "local's main drag" of Sausalito, it's good for a casual dinner or something a little more upscale, if you're looking for that. Admittedly, you don't need to ever leave San Francisco if you're looking for good sushi. Options abound. But if you're trying to spend an evening in Sausalito and need somewhere to eat, this place is a must-hit. read more

We thoroughly shared and enjoyed the miso black cod, grilled eggplant (personal favorite starter), a few sushi and sashimi platters (sushi selection was fresh, silky and buttery in texture and taste), vegetable and shrimp tempura, seaweed salad, a few rolls (complete by my craving of ume plum by request) and nigori sake to pair. We closed out the night with the toffee bread pudding cake and ice cream. It looked a bit underwhelming at first glance, but the moistness and flavors did not disappoint. My wife and I came to Sushi Ran last weekend to celebrate an early birthday lunch. Sushi Ran has long been established but honestly I wasn't expecting much from a sushi joint in Sausalito. For starters we each had a bowl of the miso soup. This was served at the perfect temperature with meaty shitaake mushrooms and was very flavorful. We devoured this quickly. Next up we shared the shrimp and basil dumplings. The shrimp were plump and juicy and accompanied with the most subtle of basil flavor. The dumpling wrapper was delicate and has a nice chew to them. You could tell these were made fresh and not frozen. Lastly, we both opted for the 10 piece nigiri omakase. Full disclosure, my wife and I are a bit of sushi snobs. We have eaten at both Michelin rated, traditional edomae, as well as contemporary sushi spots. At first glance Sushi Ran's omakase looks unassuming enough but don't let that fool you because we found it to be really packed with flavor and a pleasant surprise. Among our favorite bites from this omakase were the kasugodai (baby red snapper), zuke sake (white soy sauce cured fatty salmon), amaebi & uni (sweet shrimp), kinmedai (lightly cherrywood smoked golden eye snapper) zuke chu toro (red wine cured medium fatty blue tuna), toro & caviar, and the A5 wagyu. Just writing this review right now is making me salivate and want to go back and get this omakase again! All in all, we found Sushi Ran to be a pretty solid dining experience and cannot want to return! I came here for lunch with my family and I absolutely adored everything about this place! The setup was beautiful and interior was well decorated for a very zen ambience. I ordered the premium sashimi plate and the soft crab roll. The quality was amazing- It was so fresh and the flavors of the fish really stood out. The plate came with an assortment of tuna, salmon, whitefish, and mackerel. The Zuke chu toro and zuke sake were the standouts and I already want to try their other rolls. The fried soft shell crab was fire. It comes with asparagus and fish roe, for a nicely complimented and highlighted the fried soft shell crab. This is a place we've been going to, for almost 20 yrs, but we were shocked at the prices recently. A lunch portion of their Black Cod that doesn't even come with a side of rice, but with a tiny serving of Spinach, is $42 bucks. Add a side of rice for $10. With tax and tip= insanity. We planned to do a hike nearby so we wanted to dine here afterward. We made a reservation for patio dining. This was back in October 2020 when there was indoor dining was not an option. We arrived and were happily surprised by the Fall decorations out front - hay bales, pumpkins - everything was so festive! We were seated immediately in their courtyard. Everything was socially distanced and the staff were all wearing masks. Alisa was our server. She was great. She checked in on us occasionally and made sure we had drinks/water. We ordered sashimi and a few rolls. Everything was absolutely delicious. I thought the creamy scallop rolls had too much tobiko on top but that's easy - I just scraped them off. Instead, they added crunchy bits that made it crunch yet was super fresh. Toro belly with caviar was maybe the best I've had. And the unagi nigiri was 2x the usual size and delicious. The service was spot on. Drinks arrived quickly and didn't have to wait long for anything. Saturday early evening reservation. Less than10-minute wait for our outdoor table. Drinks first, while making dinner choices: we tried the spicy lychee cocktail, the yuzu spritz, a delicious Honig sauvignon blanc wine and the sake flight. Cocktails were both rated excellent. The sake flight consisted of: yukitoro nigori (creamy, unfiltered), hinoshita 60 (well balanced and very drinkable) and amabuki yamahai omachi (driest of the three). I appreciated that they offered a flight and enjoyed trying each style. As it was geting cooler outside, we asked our server to light the patio heater next to our table. He did, but it seemed to only have a high setting which quickly had us roasting! Fortunately, the staffperson manning the front podium/stand saw our problem. He came over, told us he could turn off the patio heater and set the overhead heater for us, which he did and it was perfect, thank you so much! We ordered several sushi rolls to share, the salmon citrus, veggie futo-maki, negitoro and a negihama; all were excellent. The wakame salad with six different seaweeds and the miso cod are a must. They are a "given," we order them every time. The cod is consistently succulent and flavorful, and the seaweed salad has a delicate, textural taste wth a light GF dressing. Though feeling comfortably full by this point, we indulged in desserts: warm toffee cake with ginger gelato (just the right balance of flavors), the green tea mochi cake with adzuki bean cream (tasty and not too sweet), miso cheesecake (delicious), and a trio of fruit sorbets (blood orange/passionfruit/pineapple). The pineapple tasted like Maui Gold (not likely, but it was that good!) The passionfruit was also yummy; the blood orange was fine, but didn't have the same fruity essence as the others). Throughout the meal, service was good, albeit a little slow. I think the kitchen may have been impacted by the number of takeout orders they were handling (it was a Saturday night). Being outside, we could see the constant flow of cars coming to pick up orders. As the traffic slowed, items arriving at our table came sooner (i.e.; the desserts). All in all, another great dinner at Sushi Ran. I really appreciate being to be able to count on a restaurant to be consistently good in an increasingly inconsistent restaurant scene, well done Sushi Ran! read more

Located in the cute neighborhood of Sausalito, Sushi Ran looks a little unassuming...but...the food here is AMAZING! We arrived here a little before opening, so we just hung around while the employees set up. Lots of outdoor seating here, and good variety to boot. They had hand sanitizer out front as we waited. Let's get straight to the food! 1) Sushi Plate - this was a combo of nigiri sushi and rolls, and WOW - the fish was fresh, and the rolls tasted so creamy! Decent portion for 2. 2) Miso Glazed Black Cod - this took a while to come out, but it was well worth the wait. The cod was so melt-in-the-mouth delish and creamy (I'm sensing a theme!), and the kale that comes with it is perfectly seasoned and complements the fish well! 3) Umeshu - nothing that blew my mind, but I was craving umeshu lol. I initially ordered the Yuzu Umeshu (yuzu is a citrus fruit that's well-known in the Kyushu area) but they ran out. While I opted for a regular umeshu instead, the server said that she charged me for the lower Yuzu Umeshu price so I appreciated that gesture. If you happen to be in the Sausalito area next time (we ended up here on our way back from wine tasting in Sonoma), I highly recommend you RUN to Sushi RAN! read more

We ordered two rolls which were really tasty, however, the sashimi was honestly the best dish. The fish was so fresh and melts in your mouth, each bite was divine. We also had the shrimp and basil dumplings which were very good as well. In my opinion you can skip the rolls and go right for the sashimi - that's the true star of the show.
