Before I go into why I gave the restaurant a 2 star, I have to give thanks to the servers who were working that night. They were closing the kitchen in 10 minutes and I appreciate their friendly service after a long day of work. The issue I had was with the food. At the restaurant I believe it tasted just fine but when I was on my way home I started to feel uneasy in the stomach. I ended up having to use the bathroom for quite a while during the rest of the night . I hope that the issue was with the fact that I went late at night and not a general reflection of the quality of the restaurant. I was there around 5 p.m. after spending the afternoon at Norton Simon on a Saturday. I was looking for a place to have a light meal and I found Sushi Roku. The food was amazing with a fun eclectic Japanese fusion menu and world class sushi. I had a spicy tuna roll (my favorite) and in a "blonde moment" asked my server if they had white rice. I know a sushi place with white rice . I realized of course they do in a split second but the server and I had a laugh. I had a sexy Japanese man bring me my food and I was seated in a comfortable location in the bar area. It's a fantastic place to dine alone or with company and while it has a "see and be seen" feel it doesn't have a pretentious feel. I had one of the best sushi experiences in my life (the other two were Midori sushi in Sherman Oaks where my late husband and I frequented and a "housewife style" sushi place in Hollywood near the post office that he found). It's a must for sushi and Japanese fare enthusiasts and it's part of the Old Town Pasadena scene. I have to start my review by giving kudos to our waiter. His name was Ching and he was an absolute delight. He was very attentive, read the room well, and gave excellent suggestions. His level of customer service and the experience he provided is why I've given this Sushi Roku review 5 stars. This restaurant is lovely inside out. I really don't think there is a bad seat in the house. My friends and I sat in the patio area. The seating arrangement was super comfy. There are also heaters out there in case it gets a little too chilly. So now let's talk food. I highly recommend ordering the Premium Black Edamame and Shishito Japanese Peppers as an appetizer. Both are seasoned to perfection! We also ordered the White Lotus Signature Roll and the Softshell Crab Roll. The presentation was nicely done and the rolls were as tasty as they look. Our first round of drinks we had the Ginger Lychee Mojito and Heat of the Dragon. Not only do the drinks make for cute Instagram pics but the bartender clearly knows what he is doing. We also had the Plum Wine. It's kind of a secret menu order and I am super happy that our waiter was kind enough to make it happen. This place is great and I look forward to my next visit. read more

The sashimi is really fresh and melts in your mouth but the caviar made it too salty. Still try it though! - I personally don't recommend the miso shrimp. Sushi in my opinion is one of the most seductive foods. When such beauty is presented right before your very eyes, who can resist? (wink, wink). How to eat sushi: I was taught to let it fall into your mouth with the fish-side touching your tongue first. Your lips and tongue should tingle, like after a sensuous kiss with a taste from the ocean. Then I usually like to lick my lips and get that slightly salty, fishy bit. When you're ready, gently pick up another piece and let's have a go at it again and again. There are several locations. Service here is always on point. Some of my faves are: - Fluke Kumquat - Hamachi Serrano - Brussel Sprouts Chip - Roasted Cauliflower I will say that I'm not a fan of any rolls with soy paper. Tried it a few times, I didn't like eating paper as a kid (someone dared me) and I still don't. Their 2pc sushi is half the price of their 4pc sashimi. I had a matcha mule which was a very refreshing vodka drink, I am a huge fan of tea cocktails so I enjoyed it very much. For food we shared some raw like yellowtail sashimi, sea bream & sea urchin sushi, also five fish special. I had blue crab caviar cocktail, this is one fantastic dish that I order every time I come here. Hubby had a ramen which was his usual order every time. The raw was so fresh and tasty, the presentations were so beautiful as well. I had a Grey Goose martini later on which was a very strong pour. The service was top notch as always, all staff members were extremely friendly. This is such a popular sushi restaurant in old town, I suggest make reservations to avoid wait. Sushi Roku is an upscale sushi restaurant in the heart of downtown Pasadena. I met up with a girlfriend for her birthday on a Saturday night. We made super last minute reservations the night before for two but were still able to secure a spot. I really liked that the reservation form was also customizable. I was able to add a note that we were celebrating a special event, her birthday. You receive a text the morning of your reservation to confirm the details are correct. I think the only thing that could be improved is their rules for the dress code. It was a little unclear as to how dressed up we should get, but I don't think it's as strict as I originally thought. We arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation and they still seated us early. My girlfriend also loved how the restaurant was decorated and kept making comments on the modern ambience and atmosphere. Upon sitting down, we were quickly greeted by our server. He was super helpful and gave us recommendations. He suggested getting the white lotus and tuna jalapeño roll. We ended up getting those rolls along with the eel sashimi and the deluxe sushi plate. The eel sashimi came out very quickly, but the other plates did take a little longer. My favorite was definitely the white lotus roll. The flavors complimented each other so well with the standout being the truffle soy. The tuna jalapeño roll was also really tasty as it was slightly tangy but it worked! Though the deluxe sushi plate was good, none of the fish really exceeded my expectations. The toro unfortunately did not give me that "melt in mouth" feeling. Since we were also celebrating her birthday, they gave us a complimentary lava cake which was really sweet! Overall, the atmosphere is really nice, but I felt the sushi was not comparable to the price point. It was good, but I would not say anything was outstanding or something I would return for.
