What an amazing spot in the heart of Old Pasadena! We had been wanting to check out this spot for awhile, and it did not disappoint. Some highlights from our meal were the salmon truffle carpaccio and the hamachi serrano. The service was also incredible. Liana was attentive, friendly, and proactive. She checked in at just the right moments, refilling our waters and cocktails before we even looked over, and providing excellent recommendations on dishes to order. Great staff working together as a dream team. Never wanted for anything that wasn't immediately attended to. Interior was very intimate and classy, while not being over the top that dress has to be more than casual, unless you prefer other wise. Food was delicious; Ji-dori chicken with mashed potatoes and carrots was cooked to perfection and arrived steaming hot- great comfort food on a winter (albeit Cali) night. I love coming to this area because I'm always going to the IPIC for movies and I would love to find a solid place nearby for dinner beforehand, but this is definitely not it. We ordered the miso soup and edamame and my biggest issue is they both tasted...water-y? If that makes sense? You could taste that they were both made with LA tap water, and unfortunately that's not a good thing. The sushi itself was tasty, but I'm not sure it was worth the price. The two things that pushed this up to a four star from a three were the friendly and speedy service and the generous, tasty drinks. Definitely a little bit more on the pricey side so keep it in mind when going here! My favorite dish of the night was the Brussels sprouts chips! It was delicious and crunchy! We got the wagyu skewer for $15 but it only comes with one. It was fun to try but I wouldn't get it again. We got Katana roll and it was delicious! I really liked how all the flavors mixed! We got the sushi platter and it was yummy, the fish was definitely fresh. For those who can't eat wasabi please keep it in mind they put some in the nigiri. It was a busy night and he was still very attentive. We had the following: White Lotus roll. Amazing! Popcorn Shrimp Tempura roll. California Roll for the husband. I have not been here since the COVID. We went for happy hour and all the good items were no longer on the menu. Not much to choose from. The service here was just alright. The decor is cool but they need to change/update the furniture in the happy hour seating section. I was dissatisfied with everything I ordered it was either salty, had no flavor, and to many onions. Took my brother to this Sushi Roku location for his birthday and the experience was just as incredible as the Vegas and Newport Sushi Roku locations I tend to frequent! First of all the ambiance at this location is beautiful. The service was also excellent. We mostly stuck to the rolls, sushi, and sashimi that I typically order at other Sushi Roku locations, which did not disappoint. Definitely the stars of the meal were the wagyu sushi, and toro sushi. Although on the pricier side of the menu, you can't go wrong ordering these two! The toro is like butter and the quality of the wagyu is amazing. For rolls, we ordered the scallop roll, spicy tuna roll, Katana roll, and White Lotus roll. Honestly, the simple spicy scallop roll is my favorite... so simple, but the scallops have such a unique texture and buttery flavor. The White Lotus was my other favorite roll. The crispy onions and wasabi truffle soy makes this roll super unique. I'll definitely be back to this location in the future! read more

I love this sushi restaurant. It's one of two high-end sushi spots in Pasadena that I think offer a uniquely elevated experience, on top of serving fish of excellent quality. This is a perfect date night spot, with dim lighting, plants, water fixtures, and an all-around romantic vibe. It's almost like half-lounge, half-restaurant. The drinks are fun and delicious; I ordered the ginger lychee mojito and the "Ish", a spicy cocktail made with peppers. I'd say they could be a little stronger, but at least they taste great. I ordered the deluxe sushi plate with spicy tuna roll, and the Wagyu sushi. The cuts of fish are fresh and generous, and the rice stays neatly stuck together on its way to your mouth. The roll pieces were the perfect size for eating whole, and again, all the ingredients were fresh. The standout was definitely the Wagyu sushi! I've never had this before or even noticed it being offered anywhere else, so I was super excited to try this with my friend. It's seared rare meat atop of sushi rice, with flecks of edible gold sprinkled on top. Mouthwatering and delectable! Worth the price if you like to splurge on such things. FOOD: Although I enjoyed the sushi, I felt like the service received does not equate to its price point. - The Deluxe Sushi Plate ($49) had a nice selection of fresh nigiri, with my favorites being the salmon and albacore. They were tender and sat on top of soft sushi rice. However, considering the high-end level pricing, I would have expected thicker cuts of sashimi. - I really enjoyed the baked crab roll in the dish, which had a good flavor profile and soft crab. Same for the toro jalapeno roll, the crunchy jalapeno contrasting well with velvety toro. SERVICE/AMBIANCE: The dimly lit interior and modern aesthetic definitely sets the tone for this place; it feels very chic inside. However, even though we had a reservation, we were placed in a table that was shoved away to the side and there was this (bamboo barrier thing?) that was placed up as a divider. Considering the status that Sushi Roku aims to be at, I did not think my experience was comparable. OVERALL: The sushi was pretty good, but the service received disrupted the experience. Additionally, I have been to multiple high-end sushi restaurants with this level of pricing or greater, but I did not think the food here was as memorable or stood out. Horrible! First let me say I live in the area and frequent local restaurants. Union, Agnes, Pearl Thai, Mommas Sushi, Fishwives - all amazing. Lets break it down. Arrived at 3:30 afternoon on a Sunday. Restaurant is empty with plenty of employee. Waited for 20 minutes for anyone to check on us. Finally Hostess came and apologized and took our order. Rock Shrimp Appetizer Mixed Tempura Appetizer Tuma Jalapeno Roll Food came out sushi first, shrimp appetizer second and tempura last. If you eat sushi you know this us backwards. Everyone but our waitress brought our food. Sushi was good, shrimp tasted like dirty water and was undercooked, tempura was doughy and undercooked. Waitress showed up with the $100 check. I've given them several chances and gone back, hoping they would get their act together and serve quality fish.... Especially comparable to their high prices. The ambience is very nice. They remodeled the place and it's so welcoming . however, the food totally ruins the experience. I mean, they've spent the money to remodel the restaurant. Why not invest the money into bringing in quality food to get customers to return . I'm hoping after my review they will get their act together. After finding out about the NYE omakase, we couldn't resist! The staff was amazing when we got there and was very great at keeping an eye on our table. The ambiance was amazing when we walked in, beautiful and peaceful. We were told that our table was the first to order the omakase for the night, so we were the "guinea pigs" to see how service would go. With that being said, we were expecting some hiccups, but here we go with the review. First Course: DELICIOUS! I was scared because I usually am not a fan of monkfish liver (ankimo), but the uni & caviar gave it a creaminess and saltiness that it needed. Surprisingly, my favorite course. Second Course: I'm never a huge fan of mackerel (Ají), so that was my least favorite part. The custard w/ ikura (chawan mushi) was weird with the texture, but the ikura added a great saltiness that pulled it together. My favorite part of the course was the Bluefin Tuna sashimi. I would get that again no questions asked. Third Course: Here is where things got a bit fishy (no pun intended lol). Third was supposed to be the lamb, but they brought us the sashimi course instead. It all tasted amazing, but it wasn't what we were expecting. It ended up working out for the better though. Fourth Course: We got the lamb chop with Kosher mashed potatoes. The lamb was cooked and seasoned PERFECTLY and the potatoes were full of flavor. My only thing was that the potatoes had some spice and although I'm ok with that, my partner was a bit taken aback. This was my second favorite course. Fifth Course: Grilled sea bass w/ sautéed spinach and crispy onions. It was AMAZING! No complaints whatsoever. I could've had another piece. Sixth Course: They actually skipped over this one. They brought it to the table next to us, but forgot us. They came back and brought it to us to go once they realized it though, so it worked out. Seventh Course: Dessert was mini lava cakes w/ ice cream and berries. As full as we were, it was a perfect way to end our meal. All in all, this place was delicious. Other than a few snags with them forgetting a whole course, not bringing silverware for the lamb course and taking my partners drink before it was finished, it was a great night out. I'm glad to have started my NYE here. I'm looking forward to going back and seeing if their back of house and front of house staff can communicate better. Came here with reservations on a Saturday night and no one was at the host podium when we arrived. We had to stand there for a few minutes waiting for someone to greet us, but we were seated soon after. The service was pretty friendly and quick to take our orders and serve our food, so overall it wasn't too bad! The hanabi honestly I don't think was worth it - there was plenty of fish so that portion was nice, but the crunchy rice was... Interesting. The texture was similar to the bottom of bibimbap ( stone bowl ), but not warm and it wasn't flavored either so each piece didn't make an impact and the textures mixed together in a way that I personally didn't enjoy ( damp fish with hard rice ). I'm glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't get it again. The deluxe sushi plate was fantastic - I shared it with my partner, but it was a little hard to do so as each maki was a unique fish so splitting each piece meant essentially cutting it in half so the other could try it. The quality of the fish was fantastic though and a nice surprise we noticed was that there was a bit of wasabi in between the rice and each slice of fish - super authentic!
