Love this place!!! Been going here for years and it is always the same quality sushi every time. They have a conveyer belt going around so you can look at the sushi and lift the lid and pick what you want. It also let's you have a wide variety because there are usually only 2-4 pieces on each plate. My favorites are the fire crunch, the Phoenix roll, the carribean roll, and the bostation. Servers are always friendly and it is just an overall fun atmosphere! Cannot get enough of this place! read more

I've been a long-time frequent diner at the Sushi Station in Rolling Meadows, and after visiting the location in Elgin, I didn't realize how much I've been! This location is about 4 of the Rolling Meadows location combined. This puppy looks like it's on 'roids compared to the tiny sister location. The conveyor is long winding maze full of fresh sushi, appetizers, and desserts. We went around 8:30 at night and since it wasn't peak time, the chefs were not putting new dishes on the menu. Awesome they don't allow dishes to go around and around rotting, but bummer we didn't get to pull all of our plates ourselves. But - our server was happy to bring us whatever we wanted off the menu. If you haven't experienced Kaiten-sushi, it's something you have to do at least once. So, hop in the car and head to Sushi Station. The little colored plates, tasty bites, and overall experience will make you and your belly happy. read more

I am a fan, but I can only give four stars. Some pricing is good, some is bad. They do have items such as green tea ice cream, but that is buried on the menu. The staff is great but I do not like being seated right next to people when there are plenty of other open tables available. Some dishes just do not make sense. For example, they put deep fried shrimp in Udon noodle soup so that it becomes soggy. Why not just put the shrimp on the side? I am also not sure when they use imitation crab and when it is real crab. If it is all imitation, they need to note that every time. read more

We used to like coming here when they first opened but cleanliness and maintenance of the restaurant has gone down over the years. If they put this little care into the dining side of the restaurant, how does it look in the kitchen? The flooring is worn in multiple spots and falling apart by the bathrooms, the seats are worn and cracking, etc. On the food side of things, the prices have stayed the same but the serving size has shrunk/slices of sushi have gotten thinner. We used to go here frequently because it was a bit of a bargain, but now we need to get more plates to eat the same quantity of food, which negates any savings that might have been there before. For the cost, I would rather just go to a sit-sown sushi place which has much better quality. read more

While I've eaten at the one in Rolling Meadows several times before, this was my first trip to the Elgin location. I'd heard it was bigger. It is. The building is absolutely gorgeous. I was really excited when I first walked in, because it seemed like there was a lot more breathing room in this location than in the Rolling Meadows one. There aren't a lot of options for kaitenzushi (pay-by-the-plate sushi, on conveyor belts) around, so Sushi Station stands apart in that regard. And it's a lot of fun -- especially if you take someone who has never experienced it before. But the food? The food at Elgin isn't as good. At least, not as good as I remember. I haven't been to the one in Rolling Meadows in probably 6 months, at least -- so maybe it's gone downhill, as well. The food looks nice (although again -- presentation was better at Rolling Meadows) -- but it seemed kind of warm (definitely not good for sushi, and there WAS quick turnover because we went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was hopping), and it seems like the prices have gone up. More stuff is on the pricier plates now than before. I used to be able to eat about $10-$12 worth of sushi at Sushi Station and be perfectly happy. Between two of us, we spent almost $60 for a meh meal that made our stomachs feel unpleasantly gurgly a short time later. I'll give the Rolling Meadows location another chance, just to be able to compare. But I doubt I'll go back to the Elgin one. Not worth it. read more

I'm a regular here, it's close, its casual, its inexpensive. Sushi Station serves food "kaiten style" which means there is a huge refrigerated Plexi-covered conveyor belt that snakes around the restaurant. You sit at a table or counter - open the sliding clear Plexiglas door near you and take out what you want. All the food comes on little colored plates. Each plate has a price which is listed clearly. When you're done the waiter or waitress will total up your bill from the different colors of plates. You can also order off the menu for either your entire meal or just order something you don't see on the belt - like unagi. Kaiten sushi is not a new concept - it was invented in Osaka, Japan in 1958. There's a chain of restaurants in Japan that serve sushi this way and they're actually becoming more and more popular. Many Japanese people are intimidated by sushi -- just as many American's are and kaiten makes it accessible. I think in Australia kaiten is called a "sushi train" because the food gets delivered on a model train (kind of like at the Choo Choo restaurant in DesPlaines). Personally, I think more food should be served on model trains. How cool would this be for a bar? But I digress. Sushi Station is a great introduction to novices or kids because there are plenty of cooked items to choose from -- and as far as I'm concerned any place that can help make sushi more accessible is good in my book. TIP ONE: There is an emphasis on American-style inside-out rolls here. These serve as a great way to help people become familiar with sushi. Want to eat more traditionally? Stay away from anything spicy or stuffed with (oh, the horror) cream cheese. Choose rolls with nori (seaweed) on the outside. Intermediate sushi eaters can start with tuna and salmon. Then venture into sea bass, mackerel and scallops. Don't drown stuff in soy sauce. Don't know how to use chop sticks? It's okay. Nigiri (fish on top of rice) is actually finger food. Oddly enough, Americans more frequently use chop sticks. And for heavens sake, don't squirt wasabi into your soy sauce to make some sort of a goo. Remember, anyone who really knows about sushi and sushi bar etiquette won't talk about how much they know about high quality neta or their vast knowledge and experience while at the restaurant. It's a bore and impolite, even in Japan. TIP TWO: Go at lunchtime or at dinnertime to get the most options available. If you go at 1:00 most of the good items will be already taken. I highly recommend ordering a small udon noodle soup. It will come with a tempura fried shrimp in the the bowl as a garnish. If you would like it a little more crispy you may ask them to bring it out on the side. read more

The sushi is good. I'm going to say that off the bat. A fair amount of selection and it all gets delivered to you via a rail system that carries tiny plates of sushi around the restaurant automatically. Each plate is color coded for price. Pink is $2, green is $4 as example. Most plates are $3 or more. Very few plates are $2 or less and not worth it. So unless you watch yourself it can add up quickly and be expensive. Honestly I would recommend you go somewhere else that offers a $15 lunch or $20 dinner of all you can eat sushi. I've been to places where the sushi is better and you can get a lot more for the price. This place is good if you plan not to eat a lot and you prefer to just taste-test different varieties. You may even find a few specials you can't find elsewhere. So in conclusion come here if you aren't really hungry and/or are new to sushi. I would love to give this place a 5 star rating, but I've had sushi on the west coast, made by a licensed Fugu chef, nothing else comes close. This is the third best sushi I've had. 1st was the place in CA, 2nd was Bamboo Garden in Tinley Park (they no longer have sushi though). I've only had sushi from about 10 different places, so I'm no expert. At Sushi Station, the rolls don't contain a lot of fish, but I think that's reflected in the price. Rolls generally don't contain a lot of fish anywhere, but there was a little less than usual. The San Diego roll is spicy salmon, tempura crumbs, cucumber, topped with spicy mayo and chili paste. It was lunch time, so it was $1.25 for 3 pcs. Trust me, for the price, it's great! If you want a lot of fish, get the nigiri-style sushi. They have much larger portions of fish. The surf clam nigiri was great! They have some of the more hard to find sushi, such as sea urchin, or shark fin and jelly fish gunkan. The sauces they use are delicious, and unique. It's not something you could walk into a Japanese food store and buy. Now, to what makes this place unique, the conveyor belt. I have vertigo, so I was worried it might give me motion sickness, but it didn't. If you get seated at the far end, a lot of the rolls could be gone by the time it makes it to you, so ask to be seated at the beginning. If what you want isn't on the belt, just ask the waitress and they'll make you whatever is on the menu. The variety you can get here is amazing. Since a lot of the basic sushi is $1.25 for 3 pcs, you can try 8 different kinds for $10. Of course it gets much more expensive than that if you want guacamole and crap on your sushi, but at lunch time the San Diego roll for $1.25 is a real steal!! My wife will not eat raw fish sushi, she won't even try it. She doesn't really even like fish. They have hot food. They have some rolls that are in a crispy shell, with shredded chicken and bbq sauce, she loved them! They also have cold veggie rolls and a cold "sweet omelette" roll, she really liked them, so you can bring non-sushi people here and they can find something. There's free refills on pop, pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce are on the tables, the bathrooms are clean, but plan on sitting about 6 inches away from other diners. read more

Staff is very nice and attentive. Right when you walk in you are welcomed and sat quickly. I appreciate that they are trying to be quick and affordable sushi, but on some plates the fish can barely be found! The $2 roll plates of salmon or tuna have minced fish that is barely a hint included in the roll, just tinting the rice. I was surprised that the cucumber rolls were the same price. The sashimi is hit or miss, sometimes being of an acceptable thickness and other times so thin it's almost transparent. Things here use to be so much better, it's sad to see that it's gone so downhill, pulling from the belt is fun, but I'll pass to be able to get at LEAST some semi decent sushi down the road. read more

If you're looking for lots of sushi for pretty fair/cheap price, then I think this place is spot on the menu. This isn't an off-the-hook, amazing sushi restaurant, but the I will say they have some pretty good stuff here. I have some staples that stick with: the spicy scallop maki, the shrimp tempura maki, and San Diego roll are my favs. I agree with a previous poster about the Udon being somewhat salty, but it's not horrible, for the price it's still a pretty big serving I think. The clock strikes 4:59PM outside of Sushi Station on a Friday night. There is a line FILLED with people waiting outside the door; all with the faces of anxiousness. From the outside you can see the cooks tearing up a storm in the kitchen, feeding the conveyor belt with a never-ending trail of orgasmic sushi dishes. From the dining area, you can see the servers preparing for a wild and hectic night. Yes, this is all but an ordinary day at Sushi Station in Elgin. Sushi Station is truly a restaurant in a class of its own. The experience itself is quite a novelty for sushi enthusiasts. The Kaiten belt is actually the longest operating food conveyor in the Midwest, if not the entire U.S. The greatest part of it all is the experience and the fun that it brings to a conversation with old friends. "look at that roll!" "I dare you to eat that baby octopus!" or even "I'm on a diet but what the hey, I'LL TAKE THE MAGMA ROLL PLEASE!" If you can't find what you are looking for on the belt, ask your server and they will walk around and look for it. Sometimes your favorite dish could be the favorite of 10 other tables so keep that in perspective! I've tried 3/4 of the menu and I absolutely love it all. -When I'm feeling fishy, I often like to get the smoked salmon. -The fiesta roll is always a great choice if you are a vegetable lover. -When I work out and feel I need to reward myself, I go for the hot rolls. Cajun(Seasoned Salmon), Texas (BBQ Chicken), and of course who could forget the biggest roll of all, the Rock and Roll. -If you are into spicy dishes, you have the regular spicy tuna rolls which are always solid. But as an avid customer, you MUST try the Wildfire or the Magma at least once. And you might want to ask for a refill while you're at it! Ask your server for details. If the belt looks empty due to the time of your visit, feel free to order through your server. Hot items orders are taken through the staff, as well as the GREEN TEA ICE CREAM (a requisite for all Sushi Station visits). All in all, if you are looking for a restaurant where you can lounge and relax as long as you'd like, I wouldn't recommend Sushi Station. But if you are a Sushi-lover and always hate waiting so long for sushi to arrive, then this is exactly the place for you! Truly a timeless experience. I think the main reason I keep going back is because I never get that greasy and disgustingly full feeling that I do with most restaurants. Service was HORRIBLE! I took my boyfriend for the first time last week. I have been going there happily for years. I asked for a private table and had to wait a few minutes. No big deal. The hostess -older dark haired woman comes over and says, let me just clean the table and ill seat you. Great! We are not taken to a table but seated on the belt while the next couple waiting after us gets our table!!!! Our waitress-very nice comes over and I explain we want a table. The cranky extremely rude hostess comes back and says -tables are for bigger parties. I say, well you just seated that couple at a table. She goes on to say they are waiting for a third person in their party.No one ever came! She just lied to our faces. Thats where I have a HUGE problem. We even asked the manager to be moved. She did NOTHING. Absolutely horrible costumer services. We would come here for my kid's birthday and other celebrations. NEVER AGAIN! I'm not sure if this location is related to the location in Schaumburg. If it is I'd definitely suggest the Randall Road location. It's newer, cleaner, and more awesome. I'm never totally impressed by the food though. I guess I tend to pick up the plates that have been circling the conveyor belt all day... they always taste old, or the rice is hard, or extra chewy. During busier times I definitely get more of the fresher stuff... but, overall the food is a "meh" for me. It IS super fun though. Definitely go for the experience. read more

This model of restaurant does not scale well. This location is much larger than the Rolling Meadows location, however as it improved on the number of guests it can seat, it fails on the number of guests it can actually feed. Here's what's wrong with this location. The belt is too long and it not refreshed enough. So unless you are sitting at the very beginning of the cycle, what you see pass by you are oodles of cupcakes and empty name cards indicating the rolls already eaten. WTF? WHY DO YOU HAVE SO MANY CUPCAKES? Why the need for so many deserts? The deserts outnumbered the guests 3 to 1. HUH? Who eats that much sweets? To make this work better, the staff should refresh the contents of the belt as soon as it passes through the first two batches of customers. We were not the only ones who experienced this. People next to us and in front of us (who were even further down the line) waited for a long time between rolls to get something to eat. We won't go back to the Elgin location. The restaurant is nice and new, but I'd rather eat than look at empty places on the conveyor belt. read more

If you thought the Sushi Station in Rolling Meadows was awesome, wait till you see the one in Elgin! It's way better. It's like the Rolling Meadows location on steroids. Super-charged! First off, I've never had to wait for seating at the Elgin location since the place is so huge. It's at least twice if not three times larger than the Rolling Meadows location. The decor is contemporary and clean, and the space has high ceilings and is very airy. Like many of the other Yelps said, Sushi Station is a great place for novice sushi eaters. Each plate comes with four pieces of sushi, so it's not a huge commitment. You can also order hot appetizers from the menu, as well as rolls that you don't see on the conveyor belt. For appetizers, I love their seaweed salad, miso soup, dumplings and fried shumai. The tempura and shrimp crispers are also really tasty. As far as rolls go, I love the Philly rolls. The rock 'n roll and spider roll are also good. Service at Sushi Station is solid. They clear away excess plates, napkins and lids. Very friendly. Great place to get some quick maki rolls and sushi. This is a wonderful place for sushi-virgins or sushi novices. One can get smaller portions of the rolls/sushi, allowing one to try many different items without having to spend a fortune. Patrons can grab items off the belt when they see something that strikes their fancy, or order favorites off the menu. Friendly staff and a very clean restaurant. Windows look into the kitchen, which I love. I like it for 2 reasons; I enjoy watching the chefs at work, and I find that exposed kitchens lead to cleaner kitchens. Definitely worth a try. read more

So I've been to this place a bunch of times. I have to agree with some of the other reviews that it's 1. Much better than the one in Rolling Meadows 2. On the verge of losing my business. I have always had good servers at this restaurant. There are no complaints about them at all. I do find it a little distasteful that the manager has to go behind the servers and count the plates. If you don't trust their math, don't hire them. That simple. As for the sushi, it's decent. They are definitely reducing the amount of crab/shrimp/etc in the sushi. When you have to search for the crab in a roll, that's unacceptable. Dont lose more business sushi station. Make the rolls the way they're supposed to be made. read more

If you are looking for a top of the line sushi dinner, this is not your place and this is not your environment. However, If you are looking for a fun, casual, family-friendly dinner to try a variety of small sushi plates, Sushi Station is a great start! First, this restaurant is based off their conveyer belt technology, where the food travels around the restaurant covered in a refrigerated tube. A variety of food will wiz past you, and they are priced based on the plate color. As you eat the dishes and stack up the plates, you will be billed accordingly. You also have the option to order off the menu. The menu has slightly larger rolls and hot foods. I always get a small salad and edamame. The serve staff is very attentive and very quick to seat you, refill your drinks it bring you a check. It's a fun and easy experience. There always seems to be new roll creations to try. Super YUM. I'm not one to eat exotic foods, but it was so easy to put my toe in the water with Sushi Station. Their food is fresh. It's fun too. My three year old loves it too. We haven't been disappointed by a trip to Sushi Station (only because of a wait) in either Schaumburg or Elgin. I did think it was interesting how they kind of adapted to their audience in Elgin and served rolls made with things other than raw fish. Smart management. We have loved this place (beginning in Schaumburg) for well over 10 years. We were happy to see another location (when we lived out that way). Recommended, especially if it's your first time. You aren't locked in to anything -- just snatch a plate from the conveyor belt and viola, you spent $3 or whatever. Don't like it? No big deal. For me, totes mcgoats, 100%. haha. But, I never waste sushi (and neither should you). So, here's my tip if you order or grab a few plates more than you should have: 1) Take a breather. 2) Watch the parade of sushi go around the conveyor belt a couple times and 3) Continue on your delicious endeavor! Overall, Sushi Station has classic sushi options and some fun rolls thrown in on their mile long belt and it's menu. I think the price is fair and the quality of sushi is pretty good. ME and the wife have been taking our daughter to Sushi Station for a while. We always have a great experience. Eldon is an awesome server, and we always ask for his section. however one day we went he was not working and we had someone different, unfortunately i can't remember his name. Our daughter likes to make a mess when we go to restaurants, and granted she is only 15 months. so she sits in a high chair and we normally let her have a cali roll or a veggie roll she feels like she is eating what we are. so naturally she destroys most of it and half always ends up on the floor. Now we are not those kind of parents to leave a big mess, so as we are finishing our meal i got down to clean up some of the stuff off the floor. Our server sees me and immediately comes to our table and says "Please don't worry about that, you guys are here for a family dinner let us worry about the mess"..... I have been to many places, and have never had better service then from the staff at Sushi Station. Great place to bring your littles, and not spend a huge amount of money. Wow! This place is so much fun! But let me explain how we came about going there... My son is a fan of the Japanese Anime/Video game "Kirby" (you know -- the little guy who looks like a pink ball with hands and feet that literally inhales everything!), and in one of the episodes, the characters are having sushi "kaiten style." Immediately, my 11-year-old son wants to try sushi. I'm in shock... because it's hard to get him to try a new vegetable at our dinner table. And now, he wants RAW FISH because he saw it in a KIRBY episode! That's my boy... I saw the episode as well, and when I saw the conveyor belt, and the characters helping themselves to the sushi as it passed by, I remembered that I had seen a TV commercial for such a place! And it was nearby in Elgin. So I searched Yelp, and sure enough, I found it -- Sushi Station. So as a treat for my son, one Saturday afternoon in October, we went to check it out. This was MY first sushi experience too. Hubby also went, as he was the sushi expert among the three of us. First of all, I have to address immediately that the customer service was outstanding. Everyone was polite, and the waiter was very attentive and very helpful. Next, as Marc B. explains VERY well, you sit at a table or at the bar as the sushi snakes by on the refrigerated belt. We chose the table, as my son, who has Asperger's syndrome, can sometimes be a little rowdy and loud. It worked out well for us -- just private enough. My son had what I would call "safer" foods for his taste: the smoked salmon and the boiled shrimp. Both are considered "nigiri" - fish/shrimp sitting on top of sushi rice, rather than rolled up in seaweed. Instead, it's held together by a band of seaweed. We also did an appetizer: the chicken terriyaki. It was OK... nothing special, but not bad either. It was meant to be our "safety" net in case my son and I couldn't handle the raw fish. Hubby had the miso, and said it was great. I tried it... a little "moldy" for my taste, but if he says it was good, I believe him. I tried the following rolls: San Diego Roll - Spicy! But in a GOOD way. YUM! Dream Roll - OMG! LOVED the cream cheese inside of these. It worked so well with the cucumber, and the soy wrapping was so much more to my liking than seaweed (which I found VERY tough -- I don't know if that's supposed to be that way or not). I could have eaten these all night. The shrimp tempura crispiness really topped off the other creamier, gentler flavors. A winner! Winter Roll - I don't know. Maybe a little too savory for my taste. Crab salad with green onions. Didn't really float my boat. But ALL of the sushi tasted very, very fresh! Desserts: pineapple (most likely from a can), and cream puffs. Great custard filling, but the chocolate coating was substandard. So the conclusion for us was the sushi/nigiri was outstanding, as it should be for a sushi place. Other items were simply average. But the conveyor belt was so unique, it alone made the experience really fun and worthwhile. And again, it should be noted that the staff was very courteous and helpful (unlike what had been noted in past, older reviews of others). Warning! While the prices look small, as the plates pile up (and ours did!), so does the price, of course. I thought we could get away with a $20 tab, but it was more like a $40 tab when it was all said and done. If we do it again (and we probably will), I'd skip the appetizer, and have a few extra rolls! read more

Since first eating here, I have fallen in love with sushi. Sadly, every other type of sushi I have had (mostly from Dominick's...what can I say? I love Sushi Station... and I prefer the Elgin location. I like choosing a variety of rolls and have a couple of peices... and then choosing even more. The fish is fantastic and its better then places that charge a lot more. I really think the belt that houses all the food is a great idea... and if you don't see something you want coming around, you can order off the menu. I recommend the Super White Tuna, and the Alaskan or Boston Rolls. read more

5 Stars because this place is greater than the sum of it parts. Much of the positives hinging on the fun conveyor belt style system. VERY spacious interior, if you want conveyor belt sushi it's worth driving out here vs the other location. If you dont care for conveyor belt sushi, then there is no reason to drive all the way out here. The sushi quality was pretty solid. Not 5 star, maybe 4 star but it was tasty. The real beauty is the conveyor belt system that brings rolls randomly. So instead of having 2 rolls for a meal, you can have 4-5 half rolls and try more things. There is a particular joy of seeing a roll you want pass down the line and jump at it like kid. The instant satisfaction/gratification component adds to the meal. One thing to be aware is at 9pm they stop replenishing the supply of sushi, so at that time whatever you see going around will be the same items until close. Also running through the belts are dessert! Both asian and western desserts are available. At any time you can order anything off the menu from the wait staff. There is bar style seating and table seating which is great. I suspect the average dinner cost per person will be $20. Mine was $21 after tax and i had 5 sushi plates and 1 dessert item. read more

The first time I went there, the tuna smelled bad so i told the waiter. The manager came over not to ask if everything was okay, but started arguing with me about the tuna saying out loud, "the tuna is fine." Shocked I didnt know what to do, but I tried to explain to him quietly that I know tuna, eat tuna all over the USA at many fine establishments, and I just had a concern that it smelled bad and I had to spit it out because it even tasted bad. This was the first week it opened. I did go back a year later and went a couple times because I love sushi and felt I could forgive them, well I took some friends there and needless to say while they all drank saki, I didnt and then next morning while on my trip to Seattle I got deathly sick, it hit me like a brick. As I landed...Food poisoning. For 24 hours I was horribly sick and vomiting. Seems I got sick from the tuna. The other three guest of mine had diarrhea all day. Not suffering as bad as I was probably due to the saki killing most of the bacteria. As I laid in bed in my hotel in Seattle I missed an entire night of an event, cursing Sushi Station. I vow never to return there and should have learned my lesson the first time. I know that one takes a chance eating sushi and I have had affects from sushi before, but this was by far the worst I have ever felt in my life from eating sushi - Tuna. Note I travel and eat Sushi all over the USA due to my work. From California to Vegas and New York. I now stick to Kiko down the street and will pay more knowing they take better care of their fish. Sushi station seems to be the Burger Kind of fast food sushi. Eat there with caution or drink plenty of wine/Saki to kill the bacteria. -Chris read more

Id love to give Sushi Station 5 stars. The only reason I'm not is the staff was so unfriendly. We had to wait to be seated and were told 10 minutes. We ended up waiting about 25. Not usually a big deal but we had 2 two year olds and a 3 year old with us and they were ready to climb the walls by time we were seated. Probably more my fault than anything... Anyway... They don't really have waiters but the guy who took our drink order seemed less than pleased with our water choices and chocolate milk for the kids for whatever reason. But then it was time to eat. The "train" service is such a great concept. I like it because you can try things without having to get a full roll. They have everything from soups and salads, to dessert. Obviously, sushi, sashimi, nigiri, and all of the above are there too, Rollin past your table making you eyeball more rolls as you're stuffing your face with one. It's almost anxiety driven, oh my god I'm so full but look at that!!! **as I grab my 6th plate and add up my bill for the 25th time.** I love it. Also, the food is really great. It looks great and it tastes great. The restaurant is clean and doesn't have a strong fish odor which I cannot stand in some places. Overall, I really loved this place and can't wait to go back. I ended up with 5 plates and my bill was $19.50. (The plates are all color coded so you Know what you're in for as you grab, in case you've never been to a place like this.) And I was stuffed.
