We went here for a friend's birthday on a Sunday evening, the place was quite full and the servers running everywhere. They have this All You Can Eat choice for $21.95 and some Dinner Specials for $18.95. I got one of the dinner specials (photo), which allows you to choose 1 appetizer (I got the house salad, I didn't even finish it, was not good!. If you want a amazing "House Salad" from a sushi place you must try the one from Earth Kitchen), 2 pieces of sushi (got 2 octopus, it was ok) and 3 rolls (Rainbow, Hong Kong and Fancy Salmon), they were all good, it was plenty, you won't leave this place hungry, that's a fact. The fish is not the most fresh you can get but is not bad. This place is BYOB and the prices are great. So, if you are craving for a lot of sushi go to this place and enjoy yourself. I've been here many times. It's my neighborhood sushi joint. Everyone should have one. Unfortunately, I'm now on the hunt for a new one. In previous experiences, everything about this place was just fine. Affordable. Consistent food. Busy enough to know that others also enjoy it but not a line out the door. After last night's experience, I won't be back. We were seated immediately. It was busy but not to the point that every table was filled. A server brought us glasses and a bucket for our wine. Then disappeared. It took a good 10 minutes before anyone came back to take our order. The food came out quickly but after it was dropped, no servers. We were hoping for more water. Nope. To flag someone down for our check took nearly 20. By that point, only 4 tables were left and it was approaching closing time. What did we need to do go get some attention? Send smoke signals? Do an Irish jig? It was ridiculous. When we did try to pay our bill, we wanted to split. One person paying half in cash the other half on the card. Server came back saying she didn't understand why we gave $30 and she put the full amount on my card. Ugh! How is this person in the service industry? Rocket scientist she wasn't. Then the topper on the cake...fruit flies. Everywhere!!! A true sign of an unclean kitchen. Super gross. The only reason this review gets two stars instead of one is because the sushi itself was good. But I'm sure I can find better service and bug-less establishments elsewhere. read more

Pretty impressed by the attractive AYCE sushi lunch price of $16.95. There is a large selection of maki rolls, nigiris and appetizers. Given for the cheap price, you can certainly expect quantity compromises quality. Next time around, I'd focus on the specialty makis for more bang for your buck. It's nice that this place takes reservations because it gets busy. The waitstaff is always moving so it takes a bit longer to get tables served and cleared. This is also the only place I've seen a sushi bridge instead of a boat so that was cute. They kept getting our order wrong for the sushi. We had 9 people. So everything kept going to one side of the table that it wasn't for and we never got certain rolls we wanted. Appetizers that we ordered came out but not two portions for things. Came here today with my boyfriend for a late lunch and I have to say this place is pretty good. When we came around 2:30ish we still got the lunch all you can eat menu for $16 something which isn't bad comparing to other all you can eat places. The workers are very kind and on their game with whatever you need and make sure everything came out good and nothing was wrong. The presentation is beautiful. The sushi here is great quality for the price. We did the all you can eat lunch special for $16.95 and we're very impressed. The service is nice. They kept our water cups (and bellies) full. The wait time was pretty average but they do bring some starters to the table (peanuts, seaweed salad, pickled veggies, etc). The only appetizer we tried was the edamame which was yummy ( although I'm not sure how you could mess that up....). What I was most impressed with was the food quality. I've been to AYCE sushi bars where the size of the nigiri is skimpy or the rolls are sub par, but the portions here were just like any other sushi restaurant and the rolls were all fresh and delicious The fish was smooth and creamy as all good nigiri is. The rolls were nicely made and tasty. The plating was cute as well. Our Friday 8pm reservation for a party of 20 was a proven hectic cause for Sushi Tokoro. In the small space by the door, we waited 20 minutes before they could combine a few empty tables to seat part of the group. The remaining one-third of the party continued to wait another 10 minutes. To spare any further wait, we checked off the ACYE menu before everybody was seated. When the waiter came to take our orders, we were freaky fast to submit them. It is $21.95 per person for AYCE sushi. The memorable was none of sushi was overly stuffed with rice. The forgettable was the blandness of the fish. With that said, I took pleasure in the unagi sushi because the eel is slightly grilled and the sauce added to the flavor. The fried squid was also one of my favorite items of the evening. Apparently, you Midwesterners, or specifically, Chicagoans all know that all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurants aren't part of Chicago institutions for food. With that being said, please have mercy on local restaurants that serve sushi or pan-Asian cuisines. I don't mean to sound sarcastic. For those who have travelled to Japan or grown up on the west coast of the United States, offering excessive comparisons and contrasts between what you used to have back home isn't going to help fellow Yelpers understand the fundamental concept of an AYCE place like Sushi Tokoro. Before commencing on my review, I encourage you all to revisit where "Chicago" is located. Students: is Chi-town immediately surrounded by either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean? Please answer this in unison...No, teacher! Therefore, you most likely won't have the best-grade, freshest fish in the world, but what we had at Sushi Tokoro this evening were solid and appropriate for an AYCE deal ($21.95/person). We quickly browsed through the menu and realized that going with the AYCE option would definitely get our money worth with our level of hunger. We ordered three (3) rounds. I don't believe there's a "quantity limit" on how many kinds of appetizers, nigiri, and signature sushi rolls an individual can order at one (1) time, unless Mr. Kobayashi from Japan or Joey Chestnut walks in. Then the boss may have to be aware because God has given each of them an invincible stomach. I'm not Sonya Thomas, either, even though we are both Asians. We had edamame, miso soup, white tuna nigiri, shrimp nigiri, tofu skin nigiri, sea bass nigiri, salmon nigiri, avocado rolls, rainbow rolls, Boston rolls, spicy salmon rolls, and fancy salmon rolls. There were six (6) small side dishes on the house delivered by the lovely young lady server upon sitting down. The menu was as clear as it could be, indicating the number of signature rolls you would be getting per order, the contents of each signature roll, and any pertinent information you might want to know. The service was prompt and friendly. The dishes were picked up and the glasses of water were refilled in a timely manner each and every time. Often times places like Sushi Tokoro come and go in the city. However, I saw many regulars that the hostess seemed to recognize. For having been opened for eight (8) weeks, I would say they are doing quite well. I would certainly be back since the quality of sushi was decent with the AYCE option available for both lunch and dinner. This is also the closest place to enjoy the AYCE since it's located one (1) bus-ride away from my apartment. The CTA Western Brown Line station is a five (5)-minute walking distance south from Sushi Tokoro. While public transportation is very convenient, if you insist on driving and choose not to digest the sushi in your stomach, I bet paid street-parking can be feasible as well. read more

I introduced my parents to the concept of BYOB while eating AYCE Sushi here, and there are no regrets. Sushi Tokoro is BOMB, and is easily now my favorite AYCE in town. Right off the Western Brown Line stop, it is extremely easy to access this restaurant. It's big yet cozy, and has the master chefs lined up in the back preparing your orders. Reservations are only given to parties of 5 or more, but coming in at 18:30 on a Sunday, we made it just before the mad dinner rush. The AYCE deal is $21.95 per person for dinner, and given the quality (and quantity) of the sushi here, it is extremely worth it. You are given a menu to order off from, which includes various appetizers such as veggie tempura, grilled squid, yakitori, and even fried scallops. Afterwards, you are free to order pieces of nigiri and all kind of rolls. The great thing about Sushi Tokoro is there are no limit to how many pieces of nigiri you can get, which to me is the true MVP. After placing our order, we received some complimentary banchan to get your appetite going. I wasn't picking at these too much because I knew the fish was coming. After a few minutes, appetizers started rolling out, and before you know it, your entire order of sushi comes in one swoop. If you order enough, it'll come in a boat! Visually, our order could easily be $100+ at a typical Japanese restaurant, but was much cheaper here with AYCE. As for the quality, I have to say that this is probably the best tasting AYCE sushi I've had in a long while. The quality of the nigiri was fantastic, especially the salmon and white fish options available. Unlike other restaurants, they don't pack the fish with rice either, so you are left to enjoy more of the fish (which is what you came for!) The rolls were good as well, although my family personally crave the nigiri. I also noticed a LOT more rice in the rolls, so the trick is to order more nigiri if you want more fish action, and ask for dipping sauces on the side. Sushi Tokoro is a wonderful place to enjoy great sushi at an affordable price. The BYOB aspect kicks it up another notch, and the service here was very attentive and great. Only issue was that they gave us far less what we ordered the second round, but I can't complain. It was still a fantastic meal and I will for sure be coming back. read more

Whoa... all you can eat sushi for $21.95, attentive service, nice atmosphere, and quality sushi to choose from in Chicago? Pinch me. Sushi Tokoro was quick to seat me, and polite the entire night. My hot tea was filled the entire night without me having to wave anyone down, and whenever I was filling out my next menu card, the staff was ready to fill my next request. (It's a bit sad that I feel happy about good service at an AYCE place, but that's what it has come to here in Chicagoland.) Try the fried scallop to start. These aren't the tiny variety, and the breading is very light. In terms of sushi, I had various nigiri, all of which had the perfect amount of rice (just a dab) and the fish just melted in my mouth. Yum. Tuna. :D If you're looking for a fresh new place to go for sushi and have hit up places like Wasabi Cafe and Sushi Para II in Chicago, check out Sushi Tokoro, folks. As someone who had to recently change my diet drastically, it's wonderful to know there is an affordable yet still quality sushi place that allows me to indulge in my love of fish without breaking the bank. Their website makes it super easy to order and it's ready in a timely fashion. I am in love with their sashimi since I have to watch my carb count though I admittedly cannot resist their ika sushi or giving into my craving for something truly indulgent like their Grand Canyon roll when I'm having a cheat day. Decent all you can eat sushi for $17.95 a person for lunch. They have a great variety of nigiri and rolls. It's nice how all the sushi comes out in a huge boat. We went with the standard salmon, white tuna, yellowtail, shrimp and eel nigiri. For the rolls we had a bunch of random rolls like Philadelphia, spider, Michigan. Overall I think the fish was really fresh and some of the sushi was still warm when it came out. As for the appetizers we got the miso soup, yaki tori, sai salad and the edamame. The miso soup was wayyy too salty. The yaki tori was was ok and the sai salad was very pickled. The edamame was decent. I definitely recommend skipping the appetizers. The dessert was great though. How many all you can eat places offer dessert too?? I had the butter pecan and it was great! Highly recommended. The service was fine. You basically mark up on a sheet of paper what you want and they bring it out. How can the service be that bad? They made the sushi quick and it was nicely rolled. This place is also BYOB! Excellent sushi restaurant near my house. Actually, this place is in Logan Square, and I live in ALbany Park, but it's worth the shirt cab ride or car ride if I can find parking. Now I'm going to be one of those people on Yelp. I'm sorry, Sushi Tokoro. A friend of mine put together a birthday dinner for his husband. I kid you not, the guy has just beaten cancer. So they made a reservation for 14, which Sushi Tokoro accepted. And of course, we all showed up. Promptly. To celebrate this really special birthday of a guy we love. You know where this is going, don't you? You can see it coming. I know. When people started showing up 10 minutes before the reservation time, the restaurant was completely full. They told us it would take 10 minutes to seat our party. At 15 minutes past the reservation time, they seated 8 of our party. They told us that two other tables were about to leave. Of course, those two tables then ordered dessert. Hey, had I been at one of those tables where the waiter is CLEARLY hovering, itching for me to leave, I'd have ordered dessert too. By 30 minutes after the reservation time, they had seated 10 of the party of 14. They had also, by the way, seated at least a dozen other people at other tables in the dining room. At this point, some of us left. It had just become too awkward. For everyone: the people who've been seated and are waiting for everyone else to be seated before they order; the people at the tables who would like to finish their dinner without feeling like they're being rushed. For the other half of the party who has now been standing outside IN THE RAIN - really, I can't make this up - for 45 minutes; for the wait staff who are each dying of stress. What an awful situation. Sushi Tokoro, you should have never taken that reservation. You should have never made a promise that you weren't willing to keep. You ruined what was supposed to be a lovely evening. And again: for a guy who just survived cancer. Shame on you. read more

I think the common praise of Sushi Tokoro are their prices. For $16.95/$21.95 you can have yourself an AYCE meal for lunch/dinner, respectively. They offer basic nigiri options in addition to basic rolls and house-special rolls. The have menu items as well which we try to stay away from (more apps, less sushi!) but who can stay away from crab rangoons? The sushi surprisingly comes out shortly after you submit your order. I found the sushi to be fresh and it has been consistent the many times I have visited. Great place for cheap, consistent, AYCE sushi. BYOB! Will be back, inevitably. read more

I do not think the AYCE worth the price, $22 including tax per person. Service was friendly and helpful, though. There was free hot tea when we came. It was not busy on a Monday night. Sadly, there was no ice cream for dessert but orange, only. For the appetizer, I would recommend Deep Fried Scallop with the side of Yum Yum Sauce, which paired better than the hot and sour sauce came with the dish. The house salad was a real ginger salad with house-made dressing. It was a little strange that they also served some small side dishes of kimchi, which is originated in Korea, in a Japanese restaurant. Anyway, I love their salty peanut and kimchi. The rolls overall were not too good. There were various types of roll, but they were all not so impressive. I could tell Rock n Roll, Boston Roll, and Davis Roll were not wise choices. As we mainly ordered salmon and shrimp, I could only be confident saying that the quality of salmon is not first rated. The Salmon Nigiri: some bites were tasty, fresh, and mellow, but some were fishy and harsh. The cut was thin, probably thinner than it supposed to be. The rice was somehow too much and too thick. I wished they had some kinds of Sashimi as the price was not low at all. Or at least, hibachi. There were just the choices of appetizer, nigiri, and the sushi roll. I think the selections of sushi are poor. However, the sushi was poorly made, looking sloppy, and there was too much rice packed on. Besides, we gave the order only twice, but the first time the waiter did not bring the Spider Roll, and the second time they forgot to bring Miso Soup and Egg Nigiri. I have no idea how the restaurant got this many votes with such a good rate. Perhaps they used to perform their work better than they are now. If you like acronyms, you'll like Sushi Tokoro because they are both AYCE and BYOB. The sushi isn't amazing but it's better than a lot of places and they don't seem to fall victim to over-stuffing the rolls with rice to save themselves money. We ordered 2 sushi boats' worth of rolls to split between the 5 of us and were happy with everything we got. Unfortunately, there was just so much that I cannot recall any of the names and there wasn't much explanation when the food was brought out. Nonetheless, there weren't any rolls I didn't like and they also do sides pretty well, too. We all got the AYCE for $21.95pp, which includes sides. We ordered Gyoza, Shumai, Vegetable Tempura, and a lightly fried Squid starter as our appetizers. One friend shied away from these items since she said they were a trap to keep you from eating more sushi, but I think they are worth it. Although I made a reservation a week in advance, we still ended up waiting for a table; however, I don't believe it was more than 15 minutes and they were very busy. We were kind of overlooked throughout the evening but I felt we could have flagged someone down if the situation called for it. They don't serve the mini sides in the beginning anymore? I loved those things. My water glass wasn't filled at all till our second batch came out. There was not many people dining in at this time neither. We didn't get plates till half way through eating our first batch. I mentioned to my best friend, "Don't we get plates?". FYI, my chopstick game isn't expert mode when it comes to sushi. Other than that, they began very attentive after that. Sushi wise, presentation is alway beautiful. Not sure why this place is highly rated but this place gets a 2 stars from me, mostly because of the poor service and sushi had too much rice for my liking. Parking: plenty of paid street parking in the front Ambience: it's a casual AYCE sushi but it was small and cramped for a Saturday night. Food: it's AYCE for $21.95 per person which includes rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. The appetizers were okay. We got the shu mai, crab rangoon, gyoza, edamame, and miso soup. These were small portions and weren't memorable. The presentation of the sushi was beautiful as they placed the rolls on a bridge. However, the sushi was poorly made, looking very sloppy, and there was too much rice packed on. This ruined my appetite because I was stuffing myself with rice. The salmon nigiri tasted sour for some reason, they probably put too much rice vinegar sauce in the sushi rice. Service: it was a Saturday night at 8pm so it was super busy. They told us it would be a 40 min wait but we ended up waiting about 20 min since we just wanted to sit at the bar, instead of a table. The service was bad throughout the night, starting from the beginning to the end. We were seated but never given menus, no soy sauce was given, no water was poured, and the waiters were nowhere to be found when we had to ask for these things. We basically had to serve ourselves and ask the waiter because they never checked on us. Horrible customer service that didn't make up for the poor quality food. Verdict: I would not recommend this place when there's plenty of great AYCE sushi places in the city. I will not come back here. read more

One of the first few AYCE sushi in Chicago. A classic spot to go to! Love their ika yaki so much. The only thing I think they need to improve on is the fish to rice ratio. Too much rice on the fried rolls! Also, some of the fish used in the rolls don't seem as fresh as the ones in the nigiri. This time, the yaki tori was a bit salty.
