We first started coming here after reading good reviews on Yelp and the fact that they had a dine-in option. There is always a wait (25-30 mins) but we build that into our arrival time. The hot and sour soup is excellent, probably the best I've ever had. All of the rolls are well prepared and full of flavor. We seem to always get the UNI roll and mix and match for the other 2-3. Last time we ordered the Mango Roll and I was pleasantly surprise how good it was. Needless to say this is the best sushi we have eaten outside of Southern California. If you are looking for the best sushi in the Kansas City area, then Sushi UNI is the place to be. This small restaurant tucked away in Lenexa was raved about by our sushi loving friends. We finally decided to drive out and experience it for ourselves, and boy were we not disappointed. The restaurant itself was not a huge place, as it was pretty crowded for a Friday night. When we did finally get seated, I must admit that social distancing was a little closer than other restaurants I have been to during these pandemic times. People were seated at every other table, but booths were packed back to back. All staff and chefs were wearing masks however. So if social distancing is a major concern for you, I would suggest coming at a non busy time or order takeout. The meal itself was fantastic. We were pretty hungry for a group of four, so we ended up ordering quite a lot of food. Our sushi rolls consisted of the Scorpion Roll, Dragon Roll, Spicy Octopus, Lobster Roll, Super Tornado, and Green Dragon Roll. We also ordered the Sushi Sashimi Combo and the Chirashi Sushi bowl. Looking back, we may have went a little overboard, but it was definitely worth it. For the sushi rolls, the Dragon Roll and Lobster Roll really stood out from the others. The dragon roll was the biggest roll we ordered, and it was delicious. If you wanted to get the most bang for your buck, this is the roll to get. This is also the best option for eel lovers like myself. The Lobster roll on the other hand was also extremely tasty and flavorful. The Super Tornado caught me a little off guard by the extra spice that the jalapeños gave to the roll. The Sushi Sashimi combo and Chirashi bowls were both a work of art when they arrived at our table. Both combos came with an assortment of fresh fish that is about as good as you can find in the heart of the country. Each meal also comes with a choice of soup/salad and two crab Rangoons. The combo itself could easily be shared between two people. The Chirashi bowl is probably the most underrated item on the menu. I do not think many people order this because they don't know what it is. Our lovely waitress even had to check the menu because she wasn't familiar with the item. The bowl came with a large portion of rice and fish that was more than enough for a single person. The standout fish on both platters was unanimously the hamachi, which melted like butter in your mouth. The one downside about our meal was that we did have to wait about a hour for our food to arrive. We didn't mind too much as it was a crowded Friday night, and we did order several large dishes. The restaurant was nice enough to hand out free spicy crab salads to all tables as an appetizer while we waited for our food. Looking back at this experience, I cannot say anything negative about the food itself. The sushi was probably the best I have had in the Kansas City area. I will definitely be back to further explore their menu, but maybe at a less busy time. My boyfriend and I are frequents here and have tried so many of their rolls, most of which, don't disappoint. Our go-to is the dinosaur roll, which is always warm, crunchy, and delicious! Today, we tried the white tiger roll for the first time, and it was SO GOOD! The lemon and mango flavors combined created a citrusy and sweet concoction that was so refreshing and also delicious, definitely will order this more in the summertime. Hidden gem!This sushi joint is located right on 87th in Lenexa, right by the popular "blackdog coffeehouse." Lots of parking space. The restaurant itself isn't really big, but the quality is A1+. I ordered takeout and they were quick and efficient. My order was-- Salmon katsu fantasy roll, spicy girl roll, crab rangoons, and a large order of miso soup.. they were so sweet and actually threw in a crab salad, on the house for me! Both sushi rolls were fantastic, wonderful combo in both rolls, not too much rice, & enough fillings. Miso soup was perfect, not bland at all.. unlike some other places where I would have to add soy sauce. Crab rangoons were crispy and fried right! Crab salad was super yummy too!! Hot AND cold, with a chance of rain! I'm going to go ahead and give my weather prediction, and report we probably won't be going back. They started off on the wrong foot, and just went down from there. I'm not saying any part of the restaurant as a whole was bad per se, it just wasn't as good as any others I've been to. (UPDATE- I will try this place 1 more time, thanks to the many positive reviews- and I gotta try that Dinosaur Roll!) So 1st there was a wait. They said 30 minutes, and it ended up being 65 min- more than double is too much. I think they weren't truthful, and I had groceries in the car. So not happy with the fib. Environment/atmosphere- cold with a chance of showers! It was crowded, COLD, and squished. They sat us at the sushi bar. I thought that would be cool, but couldn't see the sushi chef through the fogged windows blocked by stacks of raw fish. So that was a disappointment. The layout was tight. We were seated right in a busy walk-thru area, so people kept passing thru right behind us. AND- we were right in the path of a very aggressive ac vent that was blowing a cold front calling for a winter parka. We were shivering and I am normally warm. Food- we had egg drop soup, some sort of Octopus salad (I forgot the name), and 3 sushi rolls- Candy Cane, Spicy Girl, and Spicy Crunchy Salmon. But don't be cold by the names! Our first impression was the size of the rolls. I think bigger than I've seen- definitely get your money's worth with these monster rolls! Massive. And, 1 bite was way too big! Lol. Would need to request they slice a little thinner if there's ever a next time! But the next impression was an assault to our senses. Don't be fooled by the names! The spicy was not that spicy, and the candy cane was! We each took a bite of the candy cane roll, and immediately our eyes began to water, and nasal passages cleared- this thing was hotter than a mo-fo! What was it? We didn't order anything with heat like this? We began to slightly panic, and started looking around but saw nothing. We could hardly think straight from the one bite! Lol. And I love spicy food! After gobbling water, and trying an array of ideas to cool the flame, we finally found peace and were able to flag the waitress. They eventually offered to remake the roll minus the culprit. Whatever it was. We never were able to identify. It looked like tiny bits of some green pepper like jalapeno or Serrano. My guess Serrano, although nothing was listed on the menu. Price and value- we found a wide assortment of rolls priced well under $10. They had several rolls in the $5-7 range, and they were very nice size rolls. However, the prize for best for your money goes to the Dinosaur Roll which was massive, and at only $10.95, could have easily been your complete meal with a seaweed salad! So in summary, this place wasn't bad. Just not as good as most competitors- at least not for atmosphere and customer service. Just better to go during slower hours, and when not filled to max occupancy. AND avoid the Candy Cane roll, unless you are dining with a macho man who touts claims that nothing is too hot. Then this IS the spot! It'll be fun to watch them squirm, like we did the teenager at home with the rejected roll. He couldn't eat a 2nd bite either! read more

A friend told me that Sushi UNI had the best sushi in the Kansas City area. I had my doubts because it's a small, unpretentious restaurant in a little strip mall in Lenexa. But I have to agree...my friend was right! And we're apparently not the only ones who think that, because there was a line outside the restaurant, both when we arrived and after we left! It's a very busy place on Friday and Saturday evenings, and they don't take reservations, but it is worth the wait. The menu is extensive, and you can find something to tempt your tastebuds even if you're not a fan of raw fish! They offer two full pages of creative sushi rolls, and everything is incredibly fresh. The sushi items were beautifully presented, and what we had tasted even better than it looked, if that's possible. Consider yourself lucky if you get to sit at the sushi bar, as you'll be able to watch the master craftsman Sushi Chefs at work! Another perk of sitting there was that the Chef unexpectedly presented us with a complimentary Spicy Crab Salad, a combination of crabmeat, cucumber, seaweed salad, and tempura flakes, all with a slightly spicy dressing...not something I would have ordered on my own, but I will next time...I loved it. Tried Sushi Uni for the first time. My mom has the shrimp lo mein and loved it. I had the rock n roll roll and the crispy calamari roll and my daughter had the rock n roll roll and shrimp tempura roll. The crispy calamari was SO good. That was my favorite. We went at lunch so it came with soup and crab Rangoon. Their egg drop is different than I've had everywhere else. I don't know what they do different, but I wouldn't order it again. The sushi was awesome. Took away one star, because we never got drink refills and they didn't bring our crab Rangoon until way after we got our food. May have been an off day service wise. A large cut of fish and small bed of rice. I like to get some ponzu sauce and fresh wasabi to top and drizzle my nigiri! A must to complete an awesome meal. My friend and I came here after 7:30pm on a Tuesday. We came here because my teammate said this was his favorite place to eat sushi. There parking lot was big enough and it wasn't crowded. There were a lot of people eating and we were seated right away. Their menu had a lot of sushi choices as well as entrees and others. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll ($5.95), the Honey Wasabi Roll ($6.95), the Hibachi Steak ($13.95) and the Seafood Ramen Noodle Soup ($12.95). The Hibachi Steak came with two crab rangoons and a choice of soup or salad. I chose the hot and sour soup since I haven't had that in a while. We got a free crab salad on the house and that was just okay but would have been better if it was cold instead of room temperature. The crab rangoon was nothing special and just like other restaurants in the Kansas City metro area. The hot and sour soup was good and the flavor was right. After a few minutes, the sushi came out. The Spicy Tuna Roll was just okay to me. It wasn't really spicy but it at least tasted fresh. The Honey Wasabi Roll was also just okay to me. I never had tempura fried cream cheese before so order that if you're in the same boat. I didn't see what was so good about the sushi here like a few others told me. The Hibachi Steak was recommended by our waitress and I ordered it as medium. Well, it came out well done so it was a little dry. The flavor was okay with the vegetables on the plate though. The sushi itself was good (wouldn't say out of this world but good), rolls were packed tightly (no rice falling off when dipped into soy sauce!) and a good ratio of fish to rice. 2. The spicy girl roll- had a little too much going on for me personally but the flavor profile overall was good. For those that are hesitant to wasabi I wouldn't choose this. We got our menus and decided to order from the insane lunch menu. Prices were very cheap, but that does not always mean good quality. Two rolls, two crab Rangoon, and miso soup was so much food for the price. The crab Rangoon and miso soup were really good! I enjoyed them, but they definitely filled me up before our rolls arrived. I ordered the spicy salmon and the rock n roll. They were alright, but they fell apart on a few of the pieces. Overall, pretty good food, I would order different rolls next time.
