I usually don't write reviews, but I need to write one for sushi x to warn people to stay away!!! After hearing about this place from a friend, my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. We are both Korean and sashimi fanatics so we know very well what quality raw fish should look and taste like. We both got the weekend all you can eat menu, and started off with the kani salad, which was absolutely horrible. Basically, the kani was drenched in spicy mayo and we couldn't taste anything except for mayo. In addition, there was no variety of texture in the salad. In addition the tuna tartar we ordered was the same filling they use in spicy tuna rolls shaped into a pentagon with extra spicy mayo drizzled on top, which was just ridiculous. We then moved on to sashimi and it was the worst piece of fish I ever had. The fish looked dry,dull in color, and left a fishy after taste in my mouth. In addition, the salmon was cut into very small cubes, which is absolutely absurd, and the rest of the fish was cut less than half a cm thick. We then moved on to a la carte sushi. The fish was warm, which made the fish droop, and the rice was dry and hard. From what I know, sushi chefs should have cold hands to prevent transferring of heat into the ingredients thereby maintaining the freshness of the fish, but I guess they don't care about that at all here. We then moved on to variety of special rolls. I couldn't distinguish the taste between the rolls because they slathered on overpowering spicy mayo and mango sauce on all of them. Furthermore, the nori (dried seaweed) of the handroll was not crisp. Instead it absorbed all the moisture from the rice and added no texture. We then moved to udon. My boyfriend got the tempura udon and I got the nabeyaki udon. First off, I don't understand why the call it a nabeyaki udon because it didn't come in a cook pot. Second, the only difference between their tempura and nabeyaki udon was that nabeyaki had 3 pieces of fish cake in it. Third, the udon noodles were overcooked, and tannish in color, meaning they have been sitting in the broth for too long. By this point, my boyfriend and I wanted to leave as soon as possible. We asked for hot tea to finish and they gave us luke warm water. I told the waitress that the tea wasn't hot and she responded with "oh you want really hot tea?". I mean... does anyone want luke warm tea?. I tasted the tea, and couldn't taste anything so I poured some on a white plate to see if there was any color to the tea (since the cup was black and I couldn't see). The "tea" that she brought was basically hot water because it was clear. We spent $54 on this horrible quality food and was a huge waste of time. I would pay an extra $200 and eat at a quality Japanese restaurant than to come here again just for the sake of overfilling my stomach. read more

Sushi X is located in the bustling downtown area of Ridgewood NJ. It's surrounded by a former night club/high end pub and a delicatessen. When you walk into this establishment, you walk past old wine bottles that were apparently left by customers, hanging from the wall. Not my choice of décor, but I'm sure there must be a reason for it. The remaining decor is of the typical sushi bar, with several tables pushed as closely together as possible to allow for the maximum number of guests. While staying on topic of the grounds, I did use the restroom while dining here. Let's just say its best you go at home before you come. Now, to the food. I'm relatively new to the world of prepared fish of the raw variety. I have been eating sushi for around five to six years (somewhat regularly). I'm blessed in this respect because I live in an area of Bergen County that is flooded (not sure if there was a pun their??) with Sushi restaurants. I also work in a field that is priveed to areas of restaurants not normally accessible to the general public. I know clean restaurants, I know how often restaurants such as this that rely on the freshness of their product get their deliveries. I know what the grades are in regards to the Health Inspections. (No I'm not a health inspector folks). This restaurant receives its food regularly and it's always been fresh and I've never heard of any issues. However, the quality of the food, for me, is not great. Keep in mind, it's an "all you can eat sushi bar", but the fish is never a great 'cut', and it's obvious that quality has been surpassed by quantity. Don't get me wrong, it's not too bad...the rolls are tasty, the fish is okay, the miso soup is wonderful, but compared to the four or five sushi restaurants in the immediate vicinity of Sushi X, Sushi X comes out dead last in my opinion. For $20 + a person, regardless of it being "all you can eat" or not, I expect quality food and ingredients. OMG!!! LOVE this freaking place!!!! How? How?? How can they keep sushi so fresh and tasty for a buffet? First i went here with my bf and then i made my whole family fall in love with this place and now it's like a ritual every weekend we have to go there. When we get to sushi X i think those people are always in shock how can 3 skinny girls can eat so damn much??! And my answer is I DONT KNOW!!! We eat like beasts, like we haven't seen sushi or just food in general in a year. Tuna tartare is so delicious it melts in your mouth, and then those baked mussels and BBQ squid. And don't forged about sushi: crazy girl, X roll and fire cracker roll, just yummy! We always get 4-5 orders of edamame and we just sitting there eating them like seeds, no wonder they look at us funny. So if you ever in the neighborhood make sure you stop by Sushi X. The only thing that bothers me about this place are the waitresses, they can be rude, they never smile and it seems like they just really unhappy :( read more

Found the hard part of a fish eyeball in my sushi once, but it didn't deter me from allowing this place to be my go-to for AYCE sushi and appetizers. Also, I think I had a glass that still had some residue on it from a previous guest. Love their shrimp tempura and beef short-ribs. Although, the beef short ribs are a little messy because the meat is chewy and hard to rip off the bone. Favorite rolls are the sushi x roll and snow white roll. Crazy tuna roll has too much tuna for my taste. Overall, this is the only place I would go for AYCE sushi. read more

I have eaten at Sushi X several times, and although I think the quality of the food itself is very good, the service leaves a tremendous amount to be desired. There are not enough waitresses to adequately service the number of diners when the restaurant s mostly full, and virtually all of the ones that usually work there have a condescending, bored, diva-esque attitude. They seem to think that ordering and servicing the patrons is interfering with something vastly more important that they would rather be being than their very jobs, and this is quite annoying. It is too bad, since this place would be much more fun to go to regularly if this were remedied. Friendly, courteous service should be the norm, and staff attitudes should be dramatically changed by the owners for this otherwise good restaurant to be better. read more

Sushi X is a rip off of Sushi Palace with two major flaws. Their all you can eat option only applies if the entire table orders it. We went with a party of 6 but only 4 wanted all you can eat. The other 2 just wanted their own rolls. Sushi X would not let us participate in all you can eat!?!? Makes NO sense. Also, their prices are 25% higher than sushi palace (our favorite spot). We went there with high expectations from reading the reviews but it was not worth the money compared to the quality. Instead of paying $22 for a Japanese cuisine it felt like i was at a Chinese buffet with variety of fried food. The fried calamari and chicken yakidori was the worst where it felt like i was chewing on rubber. If you like your sushi to 95% rice and a tiny bit of fish and vegetables, this is your place. There was no creativity or effort put into any of the rolls we ordered. The service was mediocre at best. honestly, all good things to say about this. it is an all you can eat sushi joint. it's a bit overwhelming at first so you want to order everything but you have to eat everything to avoid the charge. we ordered a ton of sushi and a lot of the gyoza, crabmeat wontons, edamame and short ribs. the short ribs were salty but everyone else seemed to enjoy them. i also got a lot of kani salads which i thought were delicious. go with adventurous eaters so if you don't like something, they will finish it off for you. i thought service was great - we always had waters and our food came out quickly. i think if you go in with a plan, then it is well worth the money. also, we brough out own alcohol so that definitely cut down on cost. we can't wait to go again! we did make reservations and glad we did because by the time we were done, there was a huge line. all in all, a great experience with my friends and we will definitely be going again. it didnt get 5 full stars because the food wasn't anything spectacular. if you're looking for a place to be social with friends (the ordering process), and want to eat a lot - then this is it. read more

Went here with a friend for dinner a few weeks ago. They have an all you can eat option for 20 something bucks (I can't remember exactly how much), which she had gotten before. Now I'm generally wary about all you can eat sushi, because that usually means a buffet, which usually means I can't be sure how fresh it is. However, this place is not a buffet style all you can eat. You actually order off of a specific menu and they make it and bring it to you, so that was a nice surprise to me. The menu had lots of options from seaweed salad to octopus to to shumai to sushi and sashimi, etc. LOTS TO CHOOSE FROM! The food was good, but my friend and I WAYYYYY over ordered and that's where you can get into trouble. They have a sign at each table that says, do not over order, you can always order more, but you will be charged a la carte if you don't finish what you have ordered. They weren't kidding, we ended up spending about $40 more than anticipated because we couldn't finish everything, so then they charged us per roll on what wasn't eaten. Can't be mad at them for that, they did warn us! So that is a pitfall I'd like to help others avoid if possible. It's also a BYOB, which is nice and there's a decent wine store across the street that also sells Sake, so that was convenient :) Service was ok, a little slow in my opinion and they weren't that busy. Ordered there a couple of times since there isn't much competition (unfortunately) and they forgot an appetizer one time. HORRIBLE SERVICE. We came in as a group of 4 people who were really really hungry. We waited over 45 minutes just to get our food! About 30 minutes in, people who sat down after us got their food before us. I usually don't complain, but we were all hungry and found this unacceptable. We asked for the manager, but were told the manager is not available. Instead, we were forced to solve our issue with the 16 year old kid who was serving us. He said the best he can do is charge us for the kids meal which is 14.99 per person instead of 23.99 per person. I decided to be reasonable and said OK. Then, they serve us the bill and only charge 1 person 14.99 and the res of us the full 23.99 price. I told them this is unacceptable and asked them to fix the bill. They refused. I told the lady I will only pay what I was told and not this amount they are giving me. She threatened to call the police so I told her to go ahead because I feel that I was being scammed and lied to. The police came and told me they won't make me pay, but they also can't tell them what to charge. I decided to be the bigger man and pay for the bill. The nice police offer told me this is a regular thing with Sushi X, meaning they've been there a few times before the same sort of issue. I mean, what kind of place is willing to embarrass themselves and call the police on their own customers for a $28 difference? REALLY? think about it. I'm embarrassed for them. The entire restaurant saw what had happened. I hope the $28 was worth a terrible review from us. Obviously they don't care about service, because they have several one star reviews here. I ordered from Sushi X yesterday afternoon at 1:30 pm. I ordered edamame, an avocado roll, and a shrimp tempura roll. I hadn't eaten anything all day and within an hour after, I began to feel sick to my stomach. In the following hours I was sweating profusely, curled in fetal position, with a throbbing head ache. I fell asleep with hopes of feeling better when I woke up. Unfortunately, I woke up even more ill, and barely made it to the toilet before vomiting violently for what seemed like an eternity. My boyfriend was there and helped me remove my sweat soaked shirt, and attempted to clean me up with a wet washcloth as I was shaking violently. I then had horrible diarrhea, and had to have a garbage can in my lap to puke intermittently. I vomited profusely to the point that only stomach acid was coming up for hours throughout the night. I still have not slept and decided to call Sushi X for a refund, which they said they would need to see a doctor's note for. I am unable to pay to visit a doctor at this point because I don't have health insurance, yet the restaurant refused to work with me otherwise, claiming that there was no way around it. I am still sick right now. I had a horrible night thanks to Sushi X, who treated me as though I was a menace for asking for a refund of $16 for food that made me very ill. Please never eat at this restaurant. It is not worth the dizziness, pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and the stress of how they treat their customers. read more

This place was HORRIBLE. I have never experienced such horrendous service and lack of respect in my entire life. To start off, the prices are despicable for the low quality food and minuscule portions. My table never received an actual waiter/waitress just some random inattentive employee after repeatedly calling someone over. Not only was I paying $27.99 for an unappealing meal but the restaurant failed to mention ANYWHERE that they were going to additionally charge my table of four a "service charge" of over 25 dollars. Cute little place in a great area of Ridgewood. The place is a but cramped but a cool vibe. This is definitely NOT the best tasting sushi I have ever had but its not bad. If a sushi place has a California roll that doesn't taste fresh the rest of the rolls can't be that great. All in all for the price I would do it again but not the place for gourmet sushi. Solid ayce sushi spot. Went there on mother's day just before peak hours with a party of 4. (myself included) Overall food was good. I didn't really like their X roll. I felt like it was kinda mushy for my taste. I expected it to be crispy because it was deep fried so that was kinda disappointing. Same goes for their pepper salmon sashimi, just a bit mushy again. But everything else was very nice. Rock shrimp was very tasty. Crab wontons were better than average. I liked their crazy lady (might have the name wrong) roll. I had just one problem with the service. They were very kind and speedy. It was my first time there so before the meal started I wanted to be clear about how they took the orders. I've been to ayce spots before and I wanted to confirm how many pieces they serve. The first order sheet I put 4 peppered tuna, and just so they served 4 pieces. What I have witness and experience yesterday in Sushi X needs to be known to those who went there or consider to go there. We were seated in the sushi bar and ordered our sushi. We waited 45 minutes for our meal during that time, we saw some uneaten sushi that came back from customer plate and being transfer to the sushi bar to be reused! When I asked one of the waitress why it took so long, it turns out our sushi plate was accidentally given to another customer. We were asked to rewrite our order, which we did. 10 minutes later, we were serve the plate of sushi that was leftover from another customer plate (the same one that got put in the back to be recycle) and told more is to come. We told the waitress this sushi came back from another customer's plate and her response were that they were not touched by the other customer. That she can make us fresh ones if we wanted. So the conclusion from this restaurant is that what is not eaten from another customer's plate can be reused to give to a new customer. Because it has not "been touched" We are paying customers and we deserve better than this. How is that ever acceptable, ever OK to do is beyond me. We have left the restaurant 50 minutes later without sushi and is grateful for that. read more

The place used to be nice and friendly.We recently went to sushix for lunch. We had two couples and a two year child. First they didn't offer if we needed a high chair for our child then they asked if we will be ordering of the children menu. We informed them she only going to snack on some edamame and some udon. The two stars on this review are all about the poor service received early one Saturday night. Having never been here before I was not sure what to expect of the all you can eat option offered here. We were not greeted very friendly upon arrival and were rudely told to sit down wherever. Upon sitting and looking through the menus the girl asked us what we wanted and obnoxiously advised us that either everyone at the table gets all you can eat or no one does. Ok fine. After setting out all you can eat orders,,,each time she brought a dish to our table she wouldn't say anything and almost dropped every plate onto the table obviously annoyed. If we asked for anything like more water we got and attitude and an actual eye roll at once point. The other server a man finally came over to help and was so much more polite and friendly towards us. I told him to keep the tip because she didn't deserve any of it. The food was fantastic by the way but it really doesn't count because service is key and can ruin someone's entire experience. I go here very often, my wife likes here, fast service and good sushi and sashimi for money you spend , it's BYOB, marinated gal-bi is always off of flavor, tempura is not crispy many times , they don't have sashimi on the menu but waitress usually tell you what they don't have, sushi , maki and roll is good, you get what you pay for, if you haven't been there and you like sushi roll and maki, you should try.
