I was going to give this restaurant a three as the fish is fresh. However, as I was finishing my meal at the sushi bar, a handyman began to apply putty to the walls directly behind the sushi bar and directly above the sushi preparation area. In fact, a sushi prep chef had to head to reach underneath him to get some ingredients. Fortunately, I had already received my fish this point. (* I suspect this activity is a health violation in Illinois. *) The only redeeming value for this meal was the fresh fish and the prompt service. They had a limited selection, though. They did not have Uni, giant clam, or toro. And for a city just 30 minutes from Chicago, it's unbelievable they didn't have them. The miso soup had a strange musty taste. My main concern is sometimes you wait a long time waiting for your sushi, which can be frustrating but as they are almost always busy I try and not let it big me, and when they are super busy the boss can be a bit pushy and rush to u at your table. Love this place. In comparison to sushi places in the area, I would say this one is often the most busy, and has the best quality. Their chefs are professional, focused, and don't make mistakes. They are also prompt. Tough to get a table on a busy weekend night, that shows you the demand society has for their taste. One issue I have is I believe the owner lets her kids work the front desk in seating people and running payments. For some reason I personally don't feel comfortable with 12 year old kids running credit card payments of mine and making the most efficient selection for my seating. Inside, there is a lack of decor with the service to match. For about 20 dollars per person, you can go "all you can eat" from their entire menu. So, for sushi on the cheap, you really can't beat it. This is not a Japanese owned establishment. So, if you're into Japanese culture and traditional Japanese food/service, you will not find it here. I've been here three times now and I love this place. It's not fancy. Don't take someone here on your first date. Their all-you-can-eat dinner went up in price a little (compared to what others were saying) but it's pretty nice. You can get chicken katsu, udon, fried rice, and a bunch of other items that's included. I love their sushi. Don't hate on me for liking fried tempura in my sushi! I suggest the volcano roll, Las Vegas, and the Tuna Wow. I have to get each of them twice AT LEAST! The sushi guys in the back are always working so busy bustin' out all those rolls but depending on what server you get the service can be fabulous or a real fail. SushiYa is a little steep in price (I mean AYCE sushi in Chicago is cheaper than this place!), but if you are in the Joliet area, there's no better place for affordable, great tasting sushi. I eat here at least once a month (I've gone twice in one weekend a few times) and have not been disappointed yet. I heard good things about this place and decided to try it for the first time. I was craving sushi the night I went and then lost my appetite after we got there! Service was horrible! Don't ever get the tall waiter with dirty blonde hair! He sucks, didn't attend to us, got our order wrong after we repeated twice! He looked lost and attended to his other tables and not us. We waited an hour for our food, then noticed everyone who came after us all received their food! The all you can eat lunch or dinner special is a great deal and allows you to try a larger variety of sushi that you would expect from an all you can eat special. Some of the best rolls include the Volcano, Dragon, Rainbow, Godzilla, and my absolute favorite the Las Vegas roll. The Gyoza, Shumai, and Vegetable tempura appetizers are all top notch as well. We've been here dozens of times and will continue to come back as long as the quality is kept as high as it has been. If you are looking for Sushi in the Joliet area, then this is the place to go. I've been going to this place for a little over a year now. I can't say my review is well versed since all I have ever gotten is the AYCE. At a first glance, their decor and servers seem dodgy, but if you love good food at a great price do not let that stop you. $14.99 before 3 pm and $19.99 for dinner which starts at 4 pm. The restaurant closes for an hour and is very small operated. I've learned that if you want good service and good food, DO NOT go during peak times or you will be waiting for a while. I have gotten all the rolls in the AYCE and my favorites include the volcano, rainbow roll, and the Godzilla. Anything with eel sauce is also amaze balls, but those three always make my platter. If you are starving and in the mood for sushi, I would recommend it. It's 16.99 for lunch, 19.99 for dinner so a pretty good deal if you can put down 6 or 8 rolls like I did. Sat at the sushi bar and watched my rolls be prepared, and it was obvious that the chefs are well trained and know what they are doing. On par with most sushi places i have tried. The Udon was outstanding. The only thing holding this place back is the service. The owner waited on us and after each roll we asked for he would say "Next?" It was just 'Next, next, next" and then "That all?" I get the limited English thing but he was very gruff. He looked at me like I was crazy. Once I sat, I asked for a high chair in case my daughter woke up & wanted to eat. We've been here more times than I can count over the last few years and never had a bad experience. Not the place to go for the most high-flying artistic sushi experience but for great tasting sushi in familiar rolls it can't be beat! We order off the menu a few rolls at a time, always a crazy tuna with a couple other options, we like the pop up roll and the Las Vegas roll as well. We've tried the nigiri which is good but really enjoy the rolls. The gyoza and calamari are my faves from the appetizer portion of the AYCE menu. So a friend recommended this place to me. This friend has been wrong on a lot of things for example she likes sbarro's. However, every once in a while she does find a gem and this restaurant was one of them. We knew that they had all you can eat sushi for 21 dollars a person. Usually, that's a bad thing. So as my wife, myself, and my two kids arrive at this destination, it started off horrible. We stood here for a good 5 minutes before anyone even checked us in. There were two people in front of us that also weren't checked in. The Asian old lady that a lot of people seem to love from all the reviews here is shockingly extremely rude. It even looked like she was stressing out some of the staff. So anyways, 5 minutes to just get acknowledged. Not a very good thing. As we sit down, the booth that is given to us, my seat of course was cracking. Again, so far, not a very good impression. So we get all the menus and start looking thru them all. The waitress has not visited us yet. Again it is another 5 minutes before she takes our drinks. I'm already thinking that this friend has let me down again. After looking thru the all you can eat menu, they offer a lot of things that you don't usually see at all you can eat sushi places. They had appetizers and a couple of entrees on the menu. It worked out even better, when we found out that we can add our kids to the all you can eat for 8 dollars for the six year old, and 5 dollars for the three year old. So of course, we go all out of order here because there is so much I want to try. We start off with edamame, chicken, fried rice, and then a few different types of sushi. The chicken and fried rice were absolutely delicious. It is some of the best fried rice we have had in Joliet. My kids loved the chicken entree and the edamame. Yes it is possible to get kids to eat some vegetables. Now let's get on to the sushi, as this is a sushi restaurant. This is not the greatest sushi I have ever had. There are places that have better sushi. However, for the price you pay, the sushi was still quite delicious. People are comparing it to store brand sushi, and since I work in the grocery business, this statement is completely wrong. The wire and I really enjoyed the Joliet roll the best. The volcano roll was also good. In fact, all the ones i tried were good. There wasn't one that I thought was disgusting. We then went back to the appetizers and got the gyoza, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and of course, more of that chicken that my kids loved. The gyoza was some of the best I've had at a Chinese restaurant. The taste was so indescribable to put into words here. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was a little greasy, and will probably give me massive heartburn later, but was still pretty good. The service got better as the night went on. It seemed to me that the Asian lady that everyone says is rude, is probably the owner here. She may need a little more work in the customer service and management departments. It seemed to me that she stressed out our waitress who seemed quite flustered at first. For a place that recently remodeled, it may need to be updated again. It isn't a disgusting place, just can't believe it was recently remodeled. Also, the toilet in the lady's room didn't flush. Could be just a coincidence and something that will probably be fixed next time we visit this establishment. Now when everything is all said and done, the bill comes back at 61 dollars. This is an excellent deal for sushi that isn't half that bad. When you can go to a sushi restaurant and pay that much and the kids like it, that's a good thing. In conclusion to this exciting novel, I have given this restaurant 4 stars. Service needs some work and sushi is good but not the greatest. The price is definitely a plus because there isn't anywhere you will go to get that much food for that little of a price. My wife and I are sushi fans and thought we'd try this place in our "backyard." We were VERY disappointed. Aside from the fact that they are the only sushi place in the area with an all you can eat option, this place was BAD. I feel sorry for people in the area who think this is good sushi... people just don't know any better. Since they charge you for each piece you don't eat, I had to force myself to eat 2 rolls which my wife and I each tried one piece and did not like. Upon eating the roll and paying the bill my stomach was unsettled and I had to throw up in the bathroom. Key reasons why I tell anyone who I meet that likes sushi to stay away from this place: - the fish within each roll was room temp. ; Most good places have the fish at a very cool temp even if it is included in a tempura roll. - They don't have actual tempura rolls ; they just sprinkle on pork-rind looking pieces of fried something ( We could not determine what it was) - all of their "spicy sauces" were way too heavy on the mayo composition. - very small amounts of fish included in each roll. If you want good sushi, I HIGHLY recommend House of Sushi and Noodles on Belmont downtown, $17 all you can eat. We have tried over 12 sushi places downtown and in our area and they have the best tasting and best quality sushi, AND the fact that its all you can eat for $17 is AMAZING. The AYCE menu could've been more expansive but the items we selected were enjoying. Absolutely love this place. I'll come here for either the lunch or dinner All You Can Eat twice a month, and never regret it (except when I bring friends and we eat waaay to much). The sushi and maki here are tasty, though certainly not as gourmet as some pricey restaurants. My favorites are the Spicy Two-In-One and the Godzilla, the Blackjack, and the Las Vegas (if you're eating with someone!). Any one of those has converted several of my "California-roll only, please" friends. However, the real treasure at Sushiya is the variety of starters, sides, rolls and sushi on the AYCE menu. This place is great to endulge your sushi cravings. The restaurant itself is impeccably clean and well presented. The staff is a miss and so is the customer service from managerial member. They have really good lunch deals and tasty miso soup. If it weren't for it being so close to my job and the lack of other sushi restaurants in the area I wouldn't frequent Sushi Ya. If you're just popping in with a friend or alone I recommend sitting at the bar area. Otherwise you're going to have multiple waiters coming up to you all throughout your visit, very inconsistent and a bit annoying being asked the same questions multiple times. Me and a group of 4 came here on a Saturday night, and it was great. The restaurant is very clean and looks updated inside and has a great atmosphere. All the servers were very nice and always cleared our dishes right away, and we had plenty of dishes. My whole table got the all you can eat sushi, and we were not disappointed. Every roll and app we got tasted great! We all had a bunch of rolls and were able to try and bunch of different sushi.
