Can't beat the all you can eat prices or food! My family loves going to get the AYCE sushi and I enjoy the hibachi steak. Everything is always very good, the restaurant decently clean. It takes a little bit to get the sushi out to you but the amount of work that goes into it, it is understandable. We eat here often and will surely be back soon! read more

Sushi Ya would be 3 stars for the food in my opinion but the reason it is getting 4 stars is because of the VALUE! For $21.99 it's AYCE. You get access to other dishes like soba noodle, udon noodles, and fried rice. You also get access to a list of appetizers. There is an extensive menu for sushi from simple rolls to special rolls. I guess their most popular roll is the Las Vegas Roll. It's good if you like fried rolls. I generally like the simple rolls and nigiri. They definitely are heavy handed on the rice which overpowers the fish and not in a good way. You pay for everything you cannot finish so order carefully. If you're looking for exceptional quality sushi then this is not the right place for you but if you are looking for decent sushi at an exceptional price then Sushi Ya is for Ya! I had to update my review from the original 5 Stars I gave Sushi Ya a couple years ago. The food and service has really gone downhill. I walked in for the AYCE lunch special. The owner was behind the counter and completely ignored me for several minutes. A server walking by eventually greeted me and showed me to a booth. I enjoy the nigiri style sushi. Possibly in an effort to save expenses, Sushi Ya's nigiri is a tiny piece of fish draped over a comically large portion of rice. They have also raised the All You Can Eat lunch price to $17.99. I also ordered a glass of wine (Sutter Home is $4.50 a glass, laughable.) A disappointing $25 plus tip lunch. read more

My son had eaten here, and suggested that we go as a family, so we did. After mulling over the menu, we went for the all you can eat deal, and tried a lot of different sushi. The service was good. The sushi is hand made behind the sushi bar - I could see the bamboo sheets flying around back there, as various rolls were made. I like the "order as many times as you like" option. If I could ask one boon of the company - for the all you can eat, allow half-orders. I know it is a pain, but instead of getting 8 pieces of one thing, you could get a variety. They had enough vegetarian options to satisfy the vegetarian in the family as well. The lighting is a little bright - dimming the lights and adding candles would make this more intimate. Good for the area. The wait staff and sushi chefs are ok. I've been here three times in the last 4 months. I think they all share tips because at the sushi bar you get help from everyone. The sashimi, sushi, and rolls are as good or better than Edo, but not better than my favorite NJ spot. All you can eat sushi is $20, but excludes sashimi. If you don't want to eat a lot, ordering from the menu gets you better quality and value. Once I ordered some sushi and rolls and even though it was more money, the fish portions were larger than when I got the all you can eat. The food is good, if a little bland. It must be fresh because you will wait long enough to grow it. (High quality ingredients) The service is terrible but more because of policy than the actual servers. They have this -all servers care for all tables - thing going on so three people tried to take my order, no one filled my drink and my check came a decade late. What really set me off was that they served all the sushi on one plate (which was fine) but they filled my order wrong, admitted it was their mistake, said we could have the ones made in error, then came back and took the community plate to remove their mistake. This after bringing out the one hibachi meal 20 min before the 3 sushi meals. My advise, skip this place or get it to go. I will start this review by saying the server himself (tall guy with tattoos) was an incredibly kind and nice guy. He is the ONLY good thing I have to say about this place. Taking it back to the beginning of our stay, we informed the server of a gluten allergy that I have. He immediately got the gluten free soy sauce for the table before taking our order. When asked what options on the menu were gluten free or could be made gluten free, he was honest and said "I personally do not know, but my manager would so I will ask her". After asking the manager if the spicy salmon plate was gluten free who gave him the "ok", he unknowingly served the allergen to me. From here, everything crumbled. Manager argued with our party while I was ill in the restroom. Although the rest of the party did not get to enjoy the All-You-Can-Eat food, the manager still made them pay the price tag despite nobody being able to finish their plates due to my consumption of this allergy. The server was incredibly apologetic while the manager was rude, unhelpful and argumentative. The kicker? The manager clearly does NOT know what gluten really is, and tried to blame the server. The server was upfront and honest about not knowing, but trusted his managers word because...she's supposed to know, right? The server went through every effort to hold his end up but was failed by his management. 10/10 would recommend that the owner/manager/staff at this place brush up on their knowledge for allergens. Yes, we knew this place didn't have a certified gluten free kitchen, but took the precautions that WE could to prevent a reaction and enjoy the sushi we heard so much about. However, the precaution chain broke with the lack of knowledge from the staff resulting in a severe allergic reaction. I encourage the manager to reconsider more training for herself and her staff when it comes to allergens to ensure this doesn't happen to somebody else. read more

To update, over the past two years, prices have gone up, "All you can Eat" dinner used to be $19.99, (ofcourse, not including drinks..) it's now $21.99, lunch went from $14.99 to $16.99. But nothing else changed... they didn't add anymore options, or new sushi rolls, all the same, just more money. Several items on the rest of the menu also increased.. We haven't had a dine-in experience recently but I do fear that they have become more greedy and are now allowing the quality of the meals to suffer in their effort to push more food out and turn tables faster. This is a terrible shame, but they are quickly loosing the only things that made the horrible experiences there worth it.. We recently ordered take out twice, and literally, the only good thing about it, was that it was ready in 10-15 mins..(but is was also not in their rush hours). Now I know that it's made fresh, so really I have no idea what went wrong between calling in the order, 5min drive to the food, paying, and two mins down the street to the park where we would be eating.. ****** WARNING: this sections rated R!! ********* We went and picked it up, like always, the over-barring control-freak of an owner is at the front to take my card, (she really needs some people skills.. and a spa day..at one of those dope-ass super hard to find "special" parlors.. where a super hot, finely chiseled, guy named Ricardo will be ready and waiting.. and she will leave two hours later with a new definition of "satisfaction", and, for the first time in her life, she will finally know the location of her bean.. I am sad that they are not yet open for inside dining but they have added some wonderful "Party Trays" to the menu which, for my family, allowed me to recreate almost everything we used to ordered for a similar price. The location was a bit questionable however they were packed, the place was clean and the rolls were solid. My husband wanted to try an "All You Can Eat" sushi place and if that's what you want, you won't find a better deal for this area!! Not including drinks and a tip, you only have to spend $45 for two for UNLIMITED sushi rolls (both regular and specialty), nigiri, appetizers, noodle bowls, and sides! Yes, that still seems like a lot of money but if you and your date each eat 2 rolls that's barely $11 per roll! And if you get 3 or more, it's even cheaper. Compare that to other sushi restaurants' price per roll and you'll see this is a steal. The selection is great, full of different styles of rolls (including our favorite, the Las Vegas roll which is deep fried), and staples such as hibachi fried rice, shumai, and more. You can watch the chefs create the rolls up at the bar, and the ingredients are all very fresh! This place is always busy (we have only gone for dinner, not lunch) but I appreciate the pause in between 'courses', so that we can build up our appetites again. Of course, if you're like me and struggle to eat more than two complete rolls by yourself, this may not be for you (or just don't do the All You Can Eat). But my hungry husband helps me so that we always clear our plates ;) oh also, the sparkling peach sake is very tasty! read more

Sushiya's all you can eat is a great deal with good sushi. Their all you can eat option offers a good variety of specialty rolls, Dynamite, Volcano, Las Vegas, Dragon...and the list goes on. They also have the standard Philadelphias and Californias. Compared to Sushi Para, it is a better selection. Yay! I see from the reviews below that people complain about the staff. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it's not that they are not helpful. At least not all of them are sour pusses. I think one problem with the restaurant staffing/flow is that they don't seem to have assigned sections. They sort of pick up tables as they come in. Which creates the need to walk back and forth a lot. I saw one guy sort of looking around trying to locate his table. Totally understandable considering he had tables in the front and back of the restaurant. As with any all you can eat sushi joint, I worry about the timing of our rolls. At first we were waiting for our first rolls for a very long time, over 20 mins. After that, the timing picked up. Even with the minor issues, I will go to Sushiya when I'm in Joliet. It's a great deal and sushi is good. Their fried calamari is pretty great. read more

I'm so sorry, but you people who think this is great sushi have GOT to be kidding! Sushi should be a balance between the texture of the perfectly cooked and seasoned rice, and the piece of fish (or whatever else) that's on top of or inside of it. The main problem here is that the rice was TERRIBLE....no flavor and had the weirdest texture..the fish wasn't too bad, but you cannot have good sushi without good sushi rice. In Japan, an aspiring sushi chef's first real test is preparing the rice! And yes, I am a bit of a sushi snob - I DO love great sushi--but will also buy it at the local supermarket when I have a craving, so I am a realist. So....if you actually appreciate good sushi, I recommend you pass this place up. awful!!! went for all you can eat sushi as it was advertised online, went in and was told that they were not doing that.made me and my boyfriend upset because we CAME FOR SUSHI. got seafood udon and yaki soba instead. his udon was cold and had weird things floating in it that weren't supposed to be in it. my yaki soba was cold as well and the smell of it made me so nauseous i had to drench it in soy sauce. i'm still feeling gross as i'm typing this. i've had yaki soba before and it was NEVER like what i ate here. awful experience, my first and last time. dont promote all you can eat sushi and not give that out. read more

I've eaten in sushi bars from coast to coast. I can say without hesitation that this is the worst one of them all featuring the single worst sushi roll (Rock and Roll) I've every experienced. The pre-packaged sushi at a grocery store is better than this. The place is in a dilapidated strip mall on the dodgy end of Joliet and the interior looks just as bad as the outside. All you can eat sushi is great when you have sushi that doesn't make your stomach turn and a waitress that returns to your table after taking your initial order. We had neither. Don't you hate it when you go to a place the first couple of times and it's pretty awesome, you start telling people about it, and then... The next couple of times you go it's the total opposite of awesome?? well this is exactly what happened to me with Sushi Ya. Last week I came in the afternoon, so it wasn't close to closing or anything, the miso soup was lukewarm and honestly tasted like dirty soap water. I ordered a couple of rolls and one Hamachi (yellowtail) hand roll. When I took the first bite of the hand roll I noticed in my hand something was pinching me, so I squeezed it and low and behold there was a big bone sticking through, bigger than a toothpick. Thankfully it was horizontal in the hand roll so I didn't bite into it. I immediately called the waiter over and asked him to take it away and let the chef know. He said he would. He also let the manager know, but she never came to the table. When I was leaving she said, "oh, sorry about the fish bone." Well, today I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt... What a mistake that was. ‍ The waiter (Rain) who served me the first time and was great..was definitely off today. Main sushi plate took a very long time and the restaurant didn't seem busy, besides they have several servers. He was joking around with another server at another table while I was just waiting, he never offered a drink refill until I was about to pay, much less asked if I wanted to order anything else. Him and the manager/host kept arguing about something. This is it for me, I won't be going back. AND after reading some of these reviews I wish I hadn't gone ever. read more

My friends and I were looking to stay close to home tonight so we decided on Sushi Ya. I haven't been in awhile so I'm not sure when they remodeled but it looks a lot nicer! We were seated right away and the place was pretty full. I did the all you can eat and my friends both just ordered ala carte. I had the edamame, vegetable tempura and the shrimp crunch roll and Philadelphia roll. The sushi was really good, as it usually is, but the edamame lacked flavor. Our server was incredibly slow and forgetful. I didn't get my tempura until after I got my sushi. He did offer to separate the checks which was nice, but I wish the service was better. Bathrooms are small but clean. They only serve Pepsi products, which stinks as well. I am giving 3 stars because the all you can eat for $20 is a good deal, if you eat enough to take advantage of it which I really didn't. read more

The worst sushi in Illinois. I tried the all you can eat for $20...did they make the sushi horrible on purpose so I wouldn't eat more than 1 roll??? The rock & roll was disgusting; I nearly lost my appetite...the eel was overcooked, drenched in so much sauce that the rice was slimy, and the salmon skin texture was nasty. I do not recommend this place for sushi, especially if you are a novice. Any sushi lover will be disappointed in every way...don't be fooled by the Asians making the rolls...they are not authentic sushi chefs. The service was lacking; after the initial order, the server never returned to ask if we wanted more food or anything (beverage refills, dessert, etc). I eat sushi all over the country. I may not be an "expert," but I am certainly "experienced." Sushi Ya was a very pleasant surprise after trying sushi in a few mid-west cities and towns (and generally being unimpressed). While I can't say they are a GREAT place for sushi, the food was good, and the 20 dollar all you can eat offers almost everything on the menu. Many places give you California rolls dressed up four different ways and call it a variety. This place actually serves almost all of their specialty rolls and nigiri on an all you can eat basis. No sashimi for all you can eat, but that's typical anywhere. They also offer most of their appetizers and non-sushi items as well. You can go for the "premium" stuff for an additional 5 bucks. As to service... there's the rub. With the exception of the owner and his wife (she is a lovely, helpful, attentive server as well as the manager).... the wait staff kind of suck. No names, but one guy in particular almost made me walk out. I would suggest sitting at the sushi bar rather than a booth... the service is better. Overall a 3.5 on a 5 scale. I will go again next time I'm in town. I gave it a four instead of a 3 because the lady of the house is so interested in people enjoying themselves. read more

Had one of the most miserable restaurant experiences in my life. Bottom line is this place retrieved food from their waste basket and handed it to me. Ordered Saki with Sashimi combo for me, and my son ordered from all you can eat menu. Discovered mid meal saki needed to be stirred since sediment develops when stored. Notified waiter who proceeded to retrieve bottle cap from waste basket, rinsed it off and handed it to me. In light of observing the waiter garbage picking the lid and handing it to us, needless to say our appetite was ruined and we refused to finish the meal. We then told the owner what happened, requested the partial meal (25%) eaten be comped and proceeded to leave. The owner said if we refused to pay for the full meal, less $10 for the garbage can saki she'd call the police. Handed her a $100 bill and told her id review her actions online and inform the health department. You're call if you like that kind of treatment, I wont go back. read more

The service was attentive, the food arrived quickly after ordering and it was delicious. We ate off the all you can eat menu and had quite a variety of sushi, chicken and miso soup. The McDonalds of Sushi. I've had multiple bad experiences at Sushi Ya. Unfortunately, friends have insisted on trying it again and again. This last time, I joined in an ill advised "all you can eat sushi" special. We also ordered shrimp tempura. The Tempura had an American batter which is fine. The vegetables were scalding hot, which was fine. The weird part was the shrimp inside the tempura was cold. Which seemed like bad news. On the other hand, the fish on the sushi was fine, but the sushi rice was hot. The last thing you want next to raw fresh fish is boiling hot rice. I stopped eating after the first bite. So this place is ok. You walk in and I got the feeling of a hotel breakfast place with the chairs and booths and stuff...its like that weird green color with shells on it. Sushi YEAH! The all you can eat (and you better clean your plate) is unbeatable at 19.99! The fried rice was nice, the shrimp tempura roll as well as the shrimp tempura roll were tasty. Great selection in a laid back open area. I went on a week night ,which was better due to not being busy. If you buy two all-you-can-eats you can share each others different selections. I hope they read these reviews, because the service is terrible. We had at least 4 different servers, none of whom were very interested in serving us after our first round of sushi. It was like eating at a Brazillian steakhouse where the waiters stop coming by after you're there for too long. I got the impression that they were purposefully avoiding us after our second order. The manager only smiled when we told her that we were finished. Waiter were young and knew nothing about sushi (we asked and they admitted the same). About the sushi, it was terrific. What we ate would have run us $200 in Chicago. Maybe that's why they wanted nothing to do with our table. I'd come back and eat until they wheeled me out of there. read more

However, as I was finishing my meal at the sushi bar, a handyman began to apply putty to the walls directly behind the sushi bar and directly above the sushi preparation area. In fact, a sushi prep chef had to head to reach underneath him to get some ingredients. Fortunately, I had already received my fish this point. (* I suspect this activity is a health violation in Illinois. *) The only redeeming value for this meal was the fresh fish and the prompt service. They had a limited selection, though. They did not have Uni, giant clam, or toro. And for a city just 30 minutes from Chicago, it's unbelievable they didn't have them. The miso soup had a strange musty taste. Be careful though - the fine print on the bottom of the menu says they will charge you for food you dont eat, so make sure you want that entire roll before you order it. Ambiance is lacking here.
