A lot of sushi places request that you pay when you're at the restaurant. They do not allow app or online payment. I am so glad that this place allow you to pay thru Uber eats and let you pick up the order yourself. The sushi was very fresh. I really enjoyed every pieces of it. Yelpers were absolutely right about the Jasmine roll. I am not really a fan of tuna but the Jasmine roll was amazingly delicious. I would order it over and over it. The fatty yellowtail was so fresh!!!! Seriously can't get enough...I finished that one all by myself hehhe the uni was okay...I believe it could be more fresh but overall, it was not bad. The other sushi was very good as well. It was very tasty. The rice, the avocado, the sauce and the seaweed were all fresh. I would definitely come back. Service was great as well!! I sat at the donut shop since it was closed already hehhe

Don't know what the low reviews are about but I love this place!! I've probably been coming here off and on for years and stopped by recently to pick up take out. Their fish quality is amazing (probably one of my top 5 sushi places). It looks like they've switched to take out only due to Covid concerns. If you are looking for a new sushi take out place in the area, come here! Support your small businesses!!!

Chirashi, Sushi Combo B (6pcs sushi, 8pcs rolls)

Great job when packaging takeout orders. The containers are very sturdy and my food was still very fresh by the time it was delivered to my house. The food is reasonably priced and you get the quality you pay for. If you're craving some sashimi, they have the best Chirashi Bowl I've had since ordering delivery. Great portions, decent selection of fish, very fresh, and the sushi rice is good too. We also had the Rainbow Roll and some sushi, which were great as well. Overall, we had a good experience and will definitely be ordering delivery from them again.

Calm down on the sauce

I ordered through this place via Postmares and noticed that the selections here are smaller but just a tad bit cheaper than the other place I ordered from previously. I ordered 2x tuna nigiri, 2x salmon nigiri, baked mussels, and 1x baked scallop roll. The nigiris had a good rice to fish ratio but it had that weird after taste that lingers for awhile. The salmon seemed fresher than the tuna pieces. The baked scallops were okay as well, it was kind of dry and didn't have a lot of meat to it. Maybe it would've been fine if I were to eat at the restaurant instead. The baked scallop rolls were coated in so much sauce the entire thing would crumble apart because of how soggy it was. It overpowered every thing but they were generous with the scallops. Thanks for the 2 Milkia candys though. I'll probably try something else for the menu to give them another chance.

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is craving sushi (or Japanese food in general), for the following reasons: 1) The food is decent - my dining companion and I both enjoyed our meal. 2) It's open until midnight (most nights). 3) The service is friendly, yet not overbearing. 4) Despite the small parking lot, I have always been able to find an available space here when I visited the other businesses at this strip mall. 5) They supply you with a menu that appears to have a photo of (more or less) every single item you can order - I appreciate this touch, as it helps me make more informed ordering decisions. 6) Their main outdoor sign (with emojis) gives me chuckles every time I see it. 7) The prices seem (more or less) reasonable for what you get. If the seats here were cushioned and comfortable (it was neither during my visit, unfortunately), I would have definitely given this place 5 stars.

Yellow Yellowtail Delight Roll and Spicy Caterpillar Roll

Ordered three rolls and the heart attack and they were SO GOOD oh my The century roll was my favorite, they put a generous amount of salmon on too unlike other sushi restaurants. The heart attack was spicy for me but my friends loved it, there's jalapeño in there and it's deep fried. Owners were very friendly and nice; cozy and clean vibes in the restaurant. Will definitely come back!

Tempura udon delivery: they put the noodles and the fried tempura all into the soup. When opened, it was all just a bloated sludge. 0/5...
Clare S.

I ordered Tempura Udon along with a few other dishes for delivery. Not only did they get our order incorrect with one of the rolls (this part is fine, it happens).. when I opened the udon, I found just a bloated sludge. They had not only dumped the noodles in the soup, but also stuffed all the fried tempura in as well. For delivery. Nothing was separated, so the noodles were bloated, and the tempura was completely drenched... the soggy batter just fell off onto the table when I picked up the tempura. One brain cell used to package our meal. These are just basics.. So lazy, so dumb. If this is their attitude towards their customer experience I'm afraid to spend money on any thing else they have to offer. 0/5 if I could.

For those of you wondering why there are so many bad reviews for this restaurant. I can describe this restaurant in one picture (see picture). This is the first time ordering from Sushi Ya and my last. There was an Unidentifiable bug in my ginger when I opened the sushi container; gross! Needless to say I didn't want my $$$ to go to waist and was brave to continue eating. The fish on top of the roll smelled fishy but was soft to the bite... not good but ok. The minced "mystery" fish in the middle of the role left me with a lump in my throat. Moments later I was hugging the toilet. Sooo... not only do we have to worry about getting sick from COVID, now we have to worry about Sushi Ya killing us with bad raw fish swimming in dangerous bacteria. Word of advice stay away from there disgusting food or you may wake up in a casket.

Food was extremely good ordered like 10 plate of sushi plus appetizers and only came up to $90. Owners were super friendly and talkative. Highly recommended!! The inside was small but super clean and feels like home.

Dinner. Generous serving of salmon sashimi, half order of catapillar role, plum wine, and miso soup.

Not sure why the low ratings, maybe because of the way the outside looks? Not sure, even I was skeptical when I saw the place. My first experience with Sushi Ya was through late night take out on a weekday. My bf did a search on Yelp and this location was one of the few sushi places that was open. He drove out and came back within 30 mins. I did not ask where he picked up the food bc it was one of those days that you just don't care and pray that the food will be good. To his and my relief, the salmon sashimi was fresh, soft, and buttery. The eel special roll was tasty - cold, warm, crispy at once. Sushi Ya saved the day that night. My bf took me to the place a week later, and was surprised to see how it looked, but everyone was so nice. They made me feel welcomed and at home. I recommend the plum wine. It is sweet, cold, and alcoholic. It is clear that this location is primarily for take out bc of the many orders we see being taken out by grubhub/postmates ppl. No complaints there! Now during covid-19, we have joined the order-to-go crowd by calling to order ahead and picking up. I do miss eating inside and will look forward to when we can resume our close to normal, pre-pandemic lives.

Everything we ordered

I've probably passed by this Hole-in-the-wall gem in an inconspicuous plaza adjacent from Goodwill a million times and never once thought to walk-in. But now we're not dining in and while looking for takeout sushi near us this family-owned, long-established restaurant seemed like a good choice. We ordered chef's special sushi, California roll, crunchy California roll, smelt egg sushi, and a bento box with teriyaki chicken and mixed tempura. It was definitely enough for our family of four. Called it in (because...no Grubhub) and it was ready within 15min--Awesome! Food was yum. Kids even liked the shrimp tempura (amazing!) so def will be back for it. The teriyaki chicken was authentically grilled and not too sweet. The only thing I didn't think was great was the crunchy California roll...I can't tell if it was because it's to-go and therefore "soft" or if it's pre-made and reheated, but it didn't tasty crunchy or fresh. :/

Ask the Community - Sushi Ya

Been trying to order for the past few days and it keeps showing "the store is no longer available", is this place closed permanently?

Is this place AYCE or no? cuz i went like 3 months ago and they said that they don't do ayce any more. if that is the case, why does it pop up under AYCE "find".

This place no longer offers AYCE. It used to a few months ago!

They also offer some compelling specials that will keep bringing you back to their location in Old Town Pasadena. Shokado Bento Box: This is the ultimate surf and turf. The strips of Angus ribeye steak have a sweet and savory teriyaki glaze. The meat is wonderfully marbled and flavorful. Miso salmon is slightly charred and perfectly cooked, soft and supple throughout. There's some irresistible sashimi. The tuna is ruby red, firm, and minerally. The salmon is rich and creamy. Yellowtail is tender and buttery. For contrast, there's a slippery green wakame seaweed salad with sesame seeds. Pickled cucumbers add a strong briny crunch. The dark, squiggly hijiki seaweed also adds some crunch combined with soft squid. Miso soup offers savory and umami flavors. Parking: You need to hunt for paid sidewalk parking.

After more than a year away, I decided to give Osawa another try on May 8, 2026. Unfortunately, the experience confirmed why I had stopped coming. Around 9:02 p.m., my waiter came by to ask for last orders. I ordered chicken karaage. This is a simple dish that usually comes out in about 4 to 5 minutes. For whatever reason, the order did not arrive until around 9:26 p.m. -- almost 25 minutes later. It seemed obvious that the order had been forgotten. When the karaage finally arrived, it looked hastily sauced. Several parts of the chicken were unsauced, which is not how the dish was normally served in the past. Given the delay and the apparent mishandling, I did not touch the dish. A Japanese male manager wearing glasses then came over. He recognized me, and I explained that I had not been back for more than a year because of the food poisoning incident from fish in 2025. Instead of responding seriously, the manager smiled and giggled slightly, then launched into an irrelevant conversation about his connections in the Japanese food industry in Old Town Pasadena. When he asked why I had not touched the chicken, I explained the almost 30-minute delay and the problems with the dish. Rather than comping the item or offering a real apology, the manager asked whether I still wanted to eat it or would prefer to cancel it. He then ended the conversation by suggesting that I come in during weekday lunch for the $18 lunch specials. That response was bizarre and tone deaf. I did not return after a food poisoning incident to hear a sales pitch about lunch specials. I returned as a longtime customer giving Osawa another chance. Osawa's way of doing business has changed a lot. I've seen better customer service at Erewhon.

Luckily they have a waitlist system where you can track your spot in line, so we just walked around Pasadena and did some shopping while we waited. Once seated, we had a table and were taken care of by Diane, who I believe was the manager. She was amazing and made sure we were well taken care of despite how busy the restaurant was. To be honest, all of the staff were great. The servers and hostesses were friendly, professional, and kept things running smoothly. As for the food, Sugarfish continues to be one of my favorite sushi spots for the price. The rice is always cooked perfectly and the fish is consistently fresh and melts in your mouth. This time I tried the yellowtail sashimi with lemon and it was absolutely delicious. My girlfriend and I usually order the Nozawa Trust Me and the "Don't Think. Just Eat." Since it's just the two of us, we split both meals so we get to try a bigger variety of fish. Some of my favorites are still the scallops and the anago. Those two never disappoint. Overall, another great meal. The long wait is probably the biggest downside, but once you're sitting down and eating, it's easy to remember why this place is always so busy.

My fiancee ordered the Bulgogi entree that comes with steamed rice & miso soup. They are not stingy with meat here and the meat quality is pretty good. 10/10 for him. The nigiri had pretty big pieces of salmon on top so the ratio of fish to rice was a little unbalanced, not enough rice. The salmon was good quality though, 8/10. My partner and I shared the rainbow roll, mango cha cha roll, lemon salmon roll, salmon bento box, and cheese bulgogi. I really enjoyed the creative specialty sushi rolls, with my favorite roll being the mango cha cha roll. It tasted savory from the crispy shrimp tempura, while the fresh mango on top added a nice, refreshing pop of sweetness. As for the lemon salmon roll, it tasted fresh and more citrus-forward. Surprisingly, the salmon bento box was very filling and balanced. This included 2 pieces of grilled teriyaki salmon, 4 pieces of California roll, mixed tempura, miso soup, and a small salad with dressing. For anyone who does not eat raw fish, this would be the perfect dish. For the cheese bulgogi, there was a sweet-savory soy garlic flavor. I liked that the meat was thinly sliced, which paired perfectly with the gooey melted cheese. However, it was a bit saltier than I'd like it to be. Some rice and miso soup was served alongside this to balance out the richness from the cheese. Service could have been better. It seems that the staff were not very attentive at times, even though the place was not busy. Nonetheless, all of the food was pretty good and there was a chill atmosphere. This is a solid sushi bar to visit for either lunch or dinner.
