Me and my family went for lunch today and gotten the worst service. we waited over an hour with barely any service and after letting management know nothing changed. Decided to try this place after passing by many times and the restaurant and parking lot being full. After we were seated and ordered our waitress brought us some cucumbers in vinegar with a small amount of crab stick shredded up. It was ok because it was free but it was still just cucumbers in vinegar. We had the crabmeat egg roll, which was good. It was overpriced for what it was, $8 for 2 egg rolls that seemed to be just imitation crab meat with seasoning wrapped in a wonton that's fried. This seemed to be the theme of the meal, the food was ok-good, but was priced how you would expect great-excellent sushi to be. We got 1 Philadelphia roll, the Donna roll, and the sexy roll. The Phillips and sexy were good, but the Donna was a little dry and was pretty lacking in flavor. Those 4 dishes put us at $68. For 2 people to eat and not be stuffed at that price, the food just needed to be better to recommend coming here. The ambience wasn't really great either as the restaurant is in a strip mall, the bar looked well put together but nothing else in the restaurant was really special. The food and ambience not being great is an issue in my opinion. You can go get sushi on a rooftop overlooking the Mississippi 10 minutes away for cheaper. Ichiban is within a half mile and has much better ambience with better and cheaper sushi. Sushi masa as well is within a half mile and has ayce sushi that's arguably better at around the same price per person. I could list off a few more places with arguably better sushi at a better price point, but I think I've made my point. It's just really hard to pass up most of the other sushi restaurants to come here. read more

This is a hole in the wall I stumbled upon in one of my many visits to Baton Rouge. There was a small line so I expected this to be a great sushi spot. However, disappointment ensued. The tiger shrimp was the best thing I had that night. It was topped with spicy Mayo and eel sauce and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend it. The sushi, not so great. It could have been some bad fish, but it was not up to par with normal rainbow rolls. The udon was also kind of mushy. If you're trying this place, steer clear of those last two items. read more

This dish was called the 'Atlantic Salmon,' which had salmon in a soy sauce & truffle oil mix and was garnished with pine nuts, scallions, cilantro, and little mandarins. Small dining room packed with tables with a tiny 6 seat bar near the restrooms and a sushi bar that can't seat more than 10. It was very crowded. Which it being a Tuesday night, did intrigue us. Another thing that caught our eye was the specials board. Interesting sounding rolls like Mafia and Silver and other things like White Fish Ceviche sounded interesting. We perused the menu and were a bit disappointed with the Sake selection. (We always get sake with sushi...Is there any other way?) I remembered another Yelper writing about the Pineapple Sake, so we went with that. It was served cold and had a definite pineapple flavor. Not too sweet and not to dry. We liked our choice. After talking to our server, we ordered the Mafia Roll, Silver Roll, Sexy Roll and Whitefish Ceviche. The whitefish ceviche was so good. Slivers of fish, with fresh jalapenos and orange slices drizzled with oil. We were equally as pleased with our rolls. Unique flavors and texture combinations in each one that just melt in your mouth. Smokey, spicy, tart, sweet, crunchy.. We have eaten a lot of sushi and we both agreed these were not your run of the mill rolls. No basic California roll here. We didn't even use soy sauce or wasabi. That is a first for me.... We ended our meal with Green Tea ice cream and again were surprised. I like green tea ice cream, but this was different. In your face green tea flavor with just a hint of sweet. If I didn't know better, I would have thought I was chewing on green tea leaves. I've been a Sushi Yama fan for a while now and yet it's another one of those places that - for whatever reason - I haven't sat down to write a review for. I was introduced to this place by a friend who loves it and eats here regularly and then, not long after I made my first visit, I was talking with another friend who spent 17 years of her life in Japan and knows a thing or two about quality Sushi. She said that this place and Ichiban are her top picks in Baton Rouge - with this one being her first choice. So - don't just take it from me - take it from someone who knows what she is talking about and - if you're a sushi lover - you need to check this place out. So what makes this place memorable for me? For starters, the food is fantastic. Creative combinations, fresh ingredients, and attractive presentations make for a satisfying meal every time. I've had about 20 different rolls here, I suppose, and have loved everyone of them. Some a little more than others! Today I tried the Crunchy Roll, the cucumber salad, and the seaweed salad - delicious as usual. The seaweed salad is fresh, cold, and comes in a generous portion size. The sushi rolls always stand on their own, flavor wise, but come with plenty of ginger and wasabi if you want to play with the flavor and heat intensity a little bit. Secondly, the service is first rate. The wait staff are always friendly, prompt, well-informed about the menu, and are very accommodating. Thirdly, the extras are a nice touch. I'm old enough to remember when "lagniappe" was a regular part of many people's businesses - and not just restaurants - but all kinds of places. It's nice that when you sit down here they bring you a nice sampler of their cucumber salad right away and then, at the end of the meal - some fresh, sliced pineapple wedges to balance out the palate with a little sweetness before you depart. These "bookends" make for a nice welcome, and a friendly farewell - and leave you with a good feel about the place - which you would have anyway from eating here. This was my first time eating here. Dining only allows up to 6 people in a table! Our waiter was an older Asian lady and she was very attentive. We ordered the Korean sushi with spicy salmon. SO good with garlic and ginger!!! It's $35, which is a pretty reasonable price for what you get. It fed all three of us. We also got the V roll, so fresh and good. Honestly, I find this place to be just "okay" despite the other great reviews it seems to get. The place is very busy for most days so definitely getting there early is a good strategy or else you may have to wait. The main problem I have is that the sushi rolls are just way too large to fit into anyone's mouth. The flavors inside the sushi are not refined and for the most part you just taste a bunch of flavors, but nothing stands out or is unique. It feels like they just put a lot of crab and a lot of rice that takes away from the fish. Sometimes the sushi rolls are so big that they fall apart. I love this place! The only things I ever order are Korean sushi and beef tataki now. I have ordered other things when I've been with bigger groups, but nothing to write home about. I occasionally order the chicken katsu bc my bf loves it, but I've never tried it to comment on it. I have never ever had a bad experience here. The Korean sushi is a must try! They give you all of the ingredients for you to make your own hand roll. I get spicy tuna and spicy salmon. The salmon is cut into big chunks and so freaking good. It's not that spicy, but they give you fresh jalapeño slices for you to put in, so that gives it a kick! Along with the jalapeño, you get garlic, cucumber, and of course the seaweed wraps. Get ponzu sauce on the side to dip it. You won't regret it! On to the beef tataki. I love beef tataki from anywhere. But their ponzu sauce makes theirs even better! read more

I don't remember the exact rolls we ordered but we each started with a glass of wine that was reasonable and delicious, some edamame, miso soup, and then we split a few rolls and my boyfriend got chicken teriyaki from the kitchen. His meal took a bit longer to come out than mine, as to be expected since it needs to be cooked vs just rolled, but everything was really good. My friend was a regular there so I had to see what the hype was about. Immediately stepping foot into the restaurant was a vibe.. I appreciate any place with dimmed lights and a comparatively free social setting. We ordered the Korean Sushi which includes steamed white rice, jalapeños, sliced cucumbers, wasabi, pickled ginger wrapped in seaweed.
