I go out to eat alot. So I've tried different places and a wide variety of food. Latley i been focusing on finding my new spots from the reviews off yelp. So i was excited to try some sushi here. What a Bummer! The moment I walked in with my husband , we were not greeted by the two ladies in the cashier reception. (Maybe they were busy looking at my baby?) No big deal I don't mind the greetings I go for some bomb food. So I sit on the "bar" style seating but she kept saying a word I didn't understand. I told her I was fine thank you but she didn't care what I thought grabbed my purse and keys off the "bar" seating counter and moved it to the booth seating on the side. I'm guessing she was trying to Say "booth" seating. Whatever. My sweet husband followed us and sat with our baby. I've tried several sushi spots and this one just wasn't worth the great reviews it has. The rice on the sushi seamed mushy. I've ate dry rice before never mushy. Usually I forget all about the bad customer service after I eat because the yummy food makes up for it but this time I'm not sure if the sushi or the service was worse. Not going back. read more

Sushi Zen is delicious for the price and the staff is in fact very friendly and chatty. The older woman that runs the show always recognizes my little family and talks to my daughter and tries to make her giggle. It is a definite bonus when you are almost to payday, have a hankering for some sushi and hit their happy hour during any weekday and sushi on the conveyor belt is 1.50 a plate - any plate. The only catch is to buy a beverage, but we always do anyway with free refills. They have experimented with different sushi rolls that my husband has especially come to love which would be their soy wrap roll and also their tempura battered jalapenos. Delicious! We go to this little place atleast once every couple of weeks. Very rarely have we had to wait for a spot around the conveyor belt or a table. read more

This place has fast become 'our' sushi place. You can't go wrong here. There are so many things I just love about this place. The service is wonderful, and the older lady (must be an owner?) is the sweetest, kindest, most helpful woman. She is a great face to this place! For starters there is a conveyor belt, to feed the immediate hunger of the ravaging man after always being able to find a quick seat and getting a drink order in promptly. The miso soup in delicious here and is also served quickly, which is a total plus for me! In addition, they have a menu that can not be overlooked! So many delicious fresh appetizers for $2.50 and under. I highly recommend the mixed tempura and the stuffed Jalapenos (stuffed with cream cheese and salmon, holy yum!). The other thing about this place that had me at "cucumber roll", is the low carb or keto options. I had yet to find a place that would bypass rice and wrap the sushi in cucumber, until I found this gem. They have one cucumber wrapped roll on the menu that's good, but they have the ability to do it with just about any roll on the menu. I love a cucumber wrapped philly roll, and this place does it justice! Because I avoid rice, I haven't had anything off the track yet, but the fiance said it's some of the best in town. Conveyor belt sushi - one long line that passes you in two directions. Plates are $1, $1.50, $2.00, and $3.25 for the expensive plate. I tried a little bit of everything and for two people we were out the door for $33, with sodas. We are a couple that is used to spending $50-60 on Sushi when we go to a moderately priced place, and around $100 at an expensive place. I thought the food was good, and was great for the price. Ambience was OK - it's in a shopping complex and the bar isn't huge. I think there were 3 tables on one side and then seats at the conveyor along the front and back. The staff was friendly and helpeful and checked in often enough, but not too much. They had a TV with Animal Planet turned on. read more

Although I have been coming here for months, I dislike eating here. The food is decent, but the service provided by the asian lady at the register is what makes me dislike coming here. She's seems to always be in a bad mood. They're have been multiple times she did not thank me for coming after paying. Her uptightness has driven me to go elsewhere for my sushi fix. I started coming here with my kids in 2010 when we first moved to Oregon. We pretty much only eat off the conveyor belt - my kids (aged 4 and 6 back then) would eat the watermelon chunks and a slice of cake and declared they loved sushi and Sushi Zen was their favorite place to go! 6 years later they're eating roe and raw fish and are quite adventurous. I usually get the more traditional stuff and have always been impressed with the topping-to-rice ratio. We go there now about once a month. Owners are great, not a whole lot of turnover in the staff. I love this place. The prices are great ad the food is even better! They server a veriety of other items besides sushi including fruit, cake, pie and chicken kabob. Because this is a sushi track style restaurant, that means the food is always ready to go so I can easily get in and get my food fast. I especially love the house roll. I have to say that anybody who has not given at least a 3 Star review for Sushi Zen is 110% RIDICULOUS, has no idea what good sushi is, or gave their rating's based on things like the T.V. was to big, REGULARS were asked if bar was okay because there was only two in their party and it was busy and wanted to save booth for a large party, or that everything was good but they didn't have what someone wanted specifically. Come on people...base your ratings mainly on the quality of the food. It is a RESTAURANT after all. My wife and I are from Mt. Hood area and every time we came to Portland area we would try a new Sushi Restaurant. After 40 or so places we found Sushi Zen and who would of thought this little place would serve the most FLAVORFUL PACKED rolls we have ever had. The Jalapeno, Lobster, and Shrimp rolls are the best ever. Great deserts and other items. Prices are great for the special rolls. Stuffed mushrooms are great too . For those complainers of freshness, you can order anything freshly made you like. Of course if you go in at the end of night or hours after lunch right before dinner the rolls may not be "just made fresh" or the rice may be "hard" but a little pro-activeness such as "Can you make me..." will solve your problem!! Not financially feasible to throw away perfectly fine food 2hours after its made. The chefs there will ALWAYS as you multiple times if you would like something also. So just say "no" and then write a bad review. Anyways, staff are super friendly and we feel like we are at grandmas house eating. If you like lots of sauces and flavor then you really have to try this place. My wife likes the blander rolls which to me are dry and flavorless. Like nasty California sushi hence California rolls....but if you like the raw fish uncomplicated sushi then they have that too and it is also high qualityl. We have paid 3 times as much for sushi half as good more times than I can count. We finally found our Sushi home when we come to Portland area....,THANK YOU SUSHI ZEN!!! Sushi Zen gets 5 stars in the 'sushi on a track' category. I love sushi and after being spoiled living in Hawaii and having my pick of super fresh sashimi and sushi, I just could not stomach any of the sushi track restaurants in this area (Hot Pot n Sushi, Sushi Town, and some others I have blocked from memory). I was blown away the first time my hubby and I stumbled across this gem. The service was friendly and prompt. The restaurant is very clean. The chef(s) are approachable, very friendly, knowledgeable, and quick! We only experienced a long wait once, and it may have just felt long because we were so hungry and eagerly anticipating the deliciousness. The selection, quality, and freshness of rolls and other items on the track was the best I had seen. Instead of a few common options, they actually feature a great selection of specialty rolls, hot and cold. Every item I chose was fresh and the right temperature. They must pull items when they are no longer fresh because each one was amazing . We go there often and have not been disappointed. Our favorite roll to order is the lobster roll. It is incredible. A great combination of textures and flavors, accented with a slight spicy sweetness. My only complaint is that I get full before I am ready to stop enjoying everything! When I was pregnant, I tried several of their chicken dishes and they were quite delicious as well. This was the first place I ate after having my baby as I had been looking forward to enjoying the fresh fish. I do wish they would serve a pot of tea, instead of just a cup. If you enjoy the quality of Yuki, Hokusei, or Mio sushi and the like, but want to stay local and in a relaxed atmosphere and price range without sacrificing quality and variety, Sushi Zen is your new go-to. I have came here a couple times there sushi is good. It is close to home so we usto come here a lot. I was so disappointed when we went there for my sisters birthday and spent over $100. We where outside talking when the owner comes out and says we didn't count a plate... that's $2 more. We tried them out tonight and really enjoyed our time there. I like the atmosphere there. I am pregnant and it was so nice that they had alot of baked dishes on their conveyor belt. Normally at Sushi Land I only eat the avocado rolls and spider roll as far as sushi goes and me being pregnant. But today I got to eat a bunch of stuff...one of the dishes I liked was a seaweed paper with rice on top, some imitation crab meat and then salmon on top all baked together with some sauce on top. Also their deep fried jalapeno pepper with imitation crab meat stuffing w/sauce was good. Normally I'm not a fan of imitation crab meat and prefer the raw stuff but for a pregnant person who is even afraid to eat imitation crab meat that has not been heated first (same goes for deli meat, etc.), this was divine! The sushi chef as well as the waiter was so very kind. So much nicer than some of the staff especially the sushi chefs at Sushi Land. I do like Sushi Land as well but I like Sushi Zen better for their atmosphere, some of the extra variety rolls they have and especially the staff. Normally at Sushi Land they make you feel bad when you order something from the chef...but not here, they make you feel more than welcome to order something that's not on the conveyor belt. Their edanamme is also freshly made for you when you order it, my kids love those. Only thing is they are a little more expensive than Sushi Land but they are worth it. read more

I have two places I love to go to for sushi or Japanese food. If you want a casual sushi bar, with good quality fish and food, cheap and convenient if you want to eat something healthy before going to the movies or something, sushi zen is perfect. I love their special baked salmon roll, since I have a cucumber allergy eating sushi rolls is usually hard for me, but this is rich and tasty. Our usual Japanese restaurant closed down and we were searching for somewhere with good selection and quality sushi. We are SO glad we found Sushi Zen. Just 8 minutes from our house and hidden in a strip mall, we were pleasantly! surprised. Tons of selection going round, not just the same 2 things over and over, plus the option to not only order fresh rolls, but the option to do a whole or half roll - something my husband and I greatly appreciate because we like to try a selection. The eel was clean and not super fishy the rolls were great, creative, and well put together. The owner (we guessed) was super sweet, accommodating, and happy to give recommendations. Just moved to this area last summer from LA, and I have to say, this is one of the best Sushi joints I have ever had. The waitress, like some other reviews have said is super nice! It is a smaller place, but the conveyor belt has ALOT more options on it. I have been to Sushi Hana and was not nearly as impressed as this place. The conveyor belt itself has lots of fresh fruits like strawberries, grapes, oranges. I also liked the fact that they placed the stuffed mushrooms on it for more variety. There is a more variety also for my small children. The baked rolls are the best! I have been there probably about 5 times now and each visit was great. It's not the best ambiance out there, but the friendly staff and terrific food makes up for it. Hope this helps! read more

The sushi is extremely salty, I'll never try it again

Was very excited to try this place because of the use of real seafood vs imitation junk I've had the strong displeasure of having in other sushi bars prior to moving here. I tried the standard California roll but sadly there's very little crab to actually flavor the roll vs the veg. So there's a strong avocado flavor, then seaweed and then seasoned crab filling. Really prefer crab be the hero in a Cali roll especially for the higher cost. The shrimp salad roll was much better with full complex flavors because of the multiple proteins and better value for the money. The salmon is fresh and elevated the rolls. The shrimp tempura in the center is tasty fairly crisp nicely breaded but they left the hard tail bits attached hanging out the side. The crab and baby shrimp were more decorative than once again for the cost would do better with a chopped prawn and more crab or maybe King crab flavor wise would really pop. Overall, wouldn't recommend California roll but the shrimp salad is worth a try. read more

Felt like having sushi today so I decided to go to Hot Pot n Sushi but it was crowded so I decided to leave and take a look around. Wasn't sure why Hot Pot was crowded since the the sushi there is pretty bland. So decided to look around and found Sushi Zen. I was glad I found this place because the sushi taste much better here and there were a lot more choices. I definitely recommend this place if you don't mind merry-go-round sushi. This place was great! The owners were so sweet to my family. I have 3 kids under 5 and going out to eat can be somewhat chaotic. They were so patient. They sat down and showed my kids how to use chopsticks, weren't worried about any mess the kids made and did whatever they could to help. The food was great too!
