We always get one of sushi combinations: the sushi zen special, the sushi regular or sushi deluxe. We also always order one of the sashimi combinations: the sashimi regular or sashimi deluxe. The fish is ALWAYS fresh and delicious. The only reason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars is that they are a little on the expensive side,.. and sometimes it's hard to get the servers attention to get refills on tea and to get your check. read more

The waitress with the glasses was extremely rude. Maybe she was having a bad day. But in took over 25 minutes to get a poke bowl and seaweed salad to go. Finally I went in to see what was going on. Turns out my order was just sitting on a table. There was maybe three other tables. Plenty of employees standing around not sure what happened. I was just given a bogus excuse that normally take out orders take 30 minutes however my order was ready but just sitting on a table. Hubby and I went to Sushi Zen for the first time and I thought it was ok. Having lived in LA for ten years I got spoiled by LA sushi. The type of rolls I order (shrimp tempura, spider roll) in LA almost always came with eel sauce and/or spicy mayo drizzled on top. This would add just a yummy extra layer of flavor and moisture. The rolls here had no sauce on top like I had hoped. From looking at yelp pictures it appears some rolls do come with a sauce on top - but not the ones I ordered. Also the soft shell crab in the spider roll was coated in panko making it super crunchy and rough in the mouth. I am used to the crab being in a tempura batter. So not my favorite. But the restaurant was clean and pretty inside and jam packed by the time we left. read more

BF found this place on yelp, thanks again yelp! We were craving some sushi in the north end, and this place got good reviews so we decided to try here. When we arrived (located in a strip mall), I joked around to my bf that "it looks popping there"... and it really was! Luckily there was one table open for us when we arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday. A few minutes later, more people arrived and the restaurant was full. However I noticed those who were waiting didn't wait too long because other tables became empty. I like the environment inside... very, very nice employees and cute, yet simple décor. We ended up getting a few hand-rolls (I only remember ordering the philly roll, but we had two more), the stuffed pumpkin, baked scallops over cali roll, and one other speciality roll. I highly suggest the Stuffed Pumpkin. As mentioned, I thought the employees were very nice. I appreciated the customer service. I wonder if the workers thought 'Oh, she's Asian..she's probably going to take pictures or yelp'..... HAHA jk. Really clean and neat place. I enjoy their decor more compared to other places. Service was great, had a extremely very attentive polite waiter. They must be popular because when the doors opened for dinner they filled up fast. They have a small HH menu from 5-630 which is nice to sample things you usually wouldn't try so I went for the chicken karaage. For sushi I ordered the suicide roll, spicy tuna and christmas roll. They were all good. Suicide has a kick of heat that is for the adventurous eater. The prices are decent for portion size as well. The slices or amount of fish could be a little more compared to rice. Shared a few things with the table for dinner, bland underwhelming sushi that did not seem to have any redeeming qualities, ordered Godzilla roll and their special Seattle Salmon Tempura rolls, also ordered chicken yakisoba which was oddly seasoned with cinnamon, had no sauce or oil, the chicken was nearly raw with severely over cooked noodles and vegetables. Our favorite nearby sushi place. We visited on my son's birthday. I had Chirashi, the family ordered nigiri sushi and rolls a la carte, some tempura, karaage and chicken teriyaki. Overall the food was delicious, we all liked them as always. The chef was nice and friendly as always. This is one consistent sushi restaurant in North side you can't miss. I really want to like this place because my family love a good sushi place and we have been in search for one in the local area. A friend recommended it since she has enjoyed this restaurant in the past. Then one of our other friend wanted sushi for her birthday so we thought we should try this place out. The two stars is for the menu selection and nice wait staff who served us. The ambience of the place is also really open and nice. Then it went downhill from there. My order wasn't entirely correct. Instead of karaage I got the katsu. The mackerel was a bit on the wet side. There were no crispiness to it. I was willing to set it all aside and not count this place out just yet. But then... We all got food poisoning. One by one we started feeling ill. It wasn't a happy birthday celebration we had hoped for our friend and for the rest of the party. I do appreciate that the manager compensated half of our meal, but honestly she should have covered the whole meal as nothing we ate stayed in when we got home. Plus, there were items we ordered we didn't touch since the nausea came on almost within 10-15 minutes into our meal. She told us it couldn't be the food because everyone around us was having the miso soup, salad and California roll. I thought we were nice to let them know how we were feeling and our suspicions on what may be the cause. We reminded them that we were there as soon as they opened and had about 10-15 minutes head start on having the food they served. At the end, we all just wanted to get home. I don't appreciate being questioned when we obviously got sick from something they served. We paid what was due on what the manager thought was fair. I wouldn't go back here. It unfortunately left a bad taste in our mouth and then some, literally. One thing, the manager/owner gave us her name and number at the end after we paid, which was a nice touch but at this point the damage was done. read more

I had to edit my review , I got mixed up with a different sushi place! We like this restaurant, we like the head chef. Food is good, fresh, decent. They have a separate "gluten free menu". I will say that the tamari tasted off, so bring your own if you need it or are particular about flavor. But it's awesome they even have it as an option. Smart on their part. But maybe it just wasn't fresh. The ikura was really nice, wasn't too salty or sticky globby like some I've had. This is a great spot for sushi. They offer good quality sashimi and a nice variety of rolls. What prompted my review is the chicken teriyaki. This is not something I would normally order at a sushi restaurant, however we came in for dinner and had a toddler and we ordered it for her with the intention of taking home what she didn't eat. WE ATE THE ENTIRE THING. I have never had chicken teriyaki this good. The chicken tasted like real chicken breast and came served over cabbage on a sizzling plate with rice on the side in its own separate bowl. The cabbage was delicious, and the chicken is hands down my favorite and the dish was not overpowered with sauce. I will never come here again. I use to come here all the time, with family and with friends. The last time I went here I took my bf for the first time. We waited for awhile for a seat even though there were seats everywhere. Our server didn't greet or interact with us at all really. He just took our order, brought our food and than picked up our check. Our waters were never refilled and no one ever asked if we needed anything. It's was insane. He kind of had an attitude. To make it even worse I asked one of the waitresses for some more water since I didn't know where our server was and she looked at me like I was crazy. Wow, wow, WOW this place is good! I've been trapped at home with a baby for months now and was dying to get out for some sushi, but didn't want to make the trek to Seattle to get it. Low and behold, after perusing Yelp for a good place near where I live, I came across Sushi Zen! Their menu looked and sounded delicious and I was basically sold on the place once I found out they had a baked seafood roll! The hubby, baby and I headed out on Saturday to try out Sushi Zen. Because of the baby we had to go to dinner around 4:30 so naturally when we arrived...no one else was there! I was a little worried that no other patron were eating there until i realized that NO ONE goes to dinner at 4:30pm on a Saturday unless you have a small baby or you are 75 years old. Any who, we got a nice table, ordered some drinks and looked over the menus. The waitress brought out edamame and a seaweed/cucumber salad to munch on (complimentary). It was SO hard to decide what to get because everything sounded so good. I went with the baked seafood over California roll (which is one of their most popular rolls) and a tempura Seattle roll. My husband got chicken teriyaki and a spicy California roll. He's not a raw fish fan so he sticks to the basics :) The food didn't take long at all and when it arrived, there was a ton. As we were about to dive in, we noticed that suddenly the restaurant was totally full and was really showing just how popular it was. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. My husband loved the chicken teriyaki and he ate every last bite of everything he ordered....as did I! I wish there were more people with us so we could have ordered more rolls and tried a little of everything but I guess that just means we have to come back really soon. My boyfriend and I grabbed some quick happy hour here. It runs from 5:00-6:30pm Mon-Thurs. This worked perfect for us since we were waiting to pick someone up from an appointment across the street. We both ordered drinks (him Redhook, me wine), edamame, cucumber salad (both free), vegetable tempura, California roll, and walked out with a bill under $14 (before tip). ALL of it was amazing and we left satisfied. My boyfriend said it was one of the best California rolls he has had. The vegetable tempura was crispy and a good portion for HH. I've been kinda obsessed with sushi lately so instead of always trekking (well, it's not really much of a trek) to Seattle, I decided to start trying out more local sushi joints and luckily, this turned out to be a great little place. It's tucked in a strip mall area but the interior was actually pretty nice. The wait wasn't long and you can have your choice to sit at the sushi bar stool area or at a table. Sushi ordered: Lion king roll (special roll of the day), crouching tuna hidden shrimp, & polar bear roll. All of the rolls was good. I think my fave was the crouching tuna hidden shrimp. The polar bear was a bit on the salty side but the jasmine tea I ordered help wash it down. Only minor con was that the wait for the sushi was a bit long but they were understandably busy and the service was good. I shall return! read more

OH. MY. GAWD. Who would have thought the absolute best sushi in the greater Seattle area would be in a Safeway strip mall in Mill Creek!?! No Kidding, this place is off the charts fresh. If I didn't know any better, I would say that they are catching the fish, cutting and serving it right off the boat! The presentation was fabulous! The fish all melted in your mouth, not just the Hamachi! And even the salmon which I usually can do without, was mouth watering delicious! They had a modest selection of nigiri/sashimi and a huge selection of different rolls. They have a whole section just on their signature rolls, which all seem to all be a tempura fried roll of some sort. My friend and I tried the Seattle Tempura roll and it was yummy!! Usually I like a large selection of rolls, but the fish was so fresh, I felt like I was wasting my time ordering the rolls when I can be enjoying such exquisite fish. This is not to say that the rolls were at all bad either! They were yummy... Well except for the seafood bake one. Not so much of a fan of that one. What I love most about this place is how you can get a fresh, exquisite meal with friendly service and all for a reasonable price. This is my new found love. I will treasure it always! Easily the best bang for your buck lunch sushi place in the Bothell/Mill Creek area! They will fight you if you try to split a check more than 3 times. This place has been our go to sushi place at work. You get a ton of value for your money. All the bento's come with Miso Soup and a salad. Their Miso Soup is top notch, warms you from the inside out! I used to get the Lunch Sushi Sashimi Bento ($13) try saying that 5 times fast... But today I discovered that the value lies in the regular lunch bento. For $9 you sacrafice the sashimi but I replaced that with the suicide (extra spicy tuna) and pork katsu. The rolls are great and the katsu is really crispy and light! The restaurant is always nice and clean inside! The service is great and they are quick and attentive! The only problem is they give you grief if you ask them to split the tab more than 3 times, so I suggest cash for a large group. read more

I got sushi deluxe special, so for $15 I it 8 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of rolls. The nigiri was wonderful! So fresh and beautiful. The rolls might have been a little lacking. I've passed by this restaurant countless times and always said to myself that I should try it since they always seemed to have a good number of people dining inside. I finally stopped in for a late dinner and sat at the sushi bar. After looking at the extensive menu (there were a large number of choices between cooked items and sushi), I decided to get the chicken karaage appetizer ($5.50), the Alaska Roll (~$4) and the Baked Scallops over California Roll (~$9). As numerous reviewers have mentioned, you get a complimentary small serving of sunomono (cucumber & seaweed salad, with some cocktail shrimp) and a bowl of edamame (boiled and salted soy beans). The first dish to arrive for me was the Alaska Roll (a salmon skin roll with cucumber, yamagobo, and kaiware). The salmon skin was exceptionally crunchy, not salty, and a good size (futomaki size). Bonus points for it being made and served to me by a cute female sushi chef in training. (In a male-dominated industry, it's refreshing to have a cute girl serving it up. ;-) ) The karaage came shortly thereafter in a little basket and was nicely cooked. The serving size was pretty small for the price (if I remember correctly, there were about 5-7 of the chicken nuggets). I saw that they go for $3.50 during Happy Hour, so if they maintain the same serving size, that's a bit more reasonable. Finally, the BSCR came and had a nice serving of baked bay scallops and shredded surimi (imitation crab) in spicy mayo sauce over a California roll. There was more surimi than scallops, but it was yummy nonetheless. I was happy that Sushi Zen did this type of roll since I haven't found another place that did it since moving up here. When it arrived, the couple next to me even asked what it was since it looked tasty to them as well. Service was good and my cup of green tea and glass of ice water was kept full (a big plus in my book). Granted there were only a few of us in the restaurant at the time (it was late, after all), so our waiter wasn't taxed too much. I'll definitely have to come back again to try some of the other sushi and kitchen menu items. Next time I'm making sure to save room for dessert (tempura ice cream!). read more
