This place has a good reputation for a reason. I was craving sushi since I try not to have it a lot because I am vegetarian aside from the very occasional sushi dinner. Since I don't have sushi a lot, I wanted to check this place out because of the good reviews and I wanted to make sure my dinner was worth it. I ordered take out and the server who took my order was lovely and even though it was busy and later at night, she did not rush me at all and made sure that my order was perfect. I got the sushi zen dinner special which consisted of miso soup, 10 pieces of a variety of nigiri, and half a California roll and a tuna roll, which I substituted for a lemon salmon roll for $5 extra. The total after tax was around $31 which isn't bad for a nice roll and 10 pieces of sushi. When I came in and picked up my order they were nice and quick to get me my order and I was in and out right away. Their miso soup was a great little side and the lemon salmon roll was pretty good but the lemon was very over powering at first so I recommend taking it off the roll. I could tell that all the nigiri was great quality but I personally did not like some of the pieces, but that's just my preference. One thing I have to mention is their wasabi, it was very nice compared to other wasabi I've had. It had this certain sweetness and it was a paler green color, which lead me to believe this is actually real wasabi. Believe it or not, a lot of sushi places don't use real wasabi because it is so expensive. If this wasabi is real, then that is a huge plus. All in all I really do like this place but I probably won't get this order because it was bigger than I could finish and some of the sushi selection I did not like. I won't lie--this affects my enthusiasm for the good restaurants I find. Is Sushi Zen worth driving past Maneki to come visit? OK, probably not. But they deserve 5 stars because they operate at a very high level. The Manekis of the world edge out their competition with what their kitchen produces, for sure. But a place like Zen can gain the advantages, such as they are, of a suburban location. Parking is easy, there's less gridlock on the way there, no need for a reservation, a more relaxed ambiance. Those advantages have a welcome place in my life, to be sure. And of course we all have a love for a place that's close and easy. But what matters at a sushi place is the fish. Lunch yesterday included great hamachi, anagi, tobiko, and a nice layout of rolls. No mayo. No cream cheese. No avocado. Well, actually, avocado is fine in small doses, there just didn't happen to be any on the plate yesterday. Good miso and wakami. The salmon in our Philly Roll was so fresh and perfect tasting. There was a a large piece of salmon stuffed in the roll. It seems like so many times I rolls that are just so skimped on the filling all I can taste is rice. Not this one, and it was only a $5 roll. The Crouching tuna hidden shrimp roll was soo good! It was the most expensive roll I had, at $10. It was a tempura shrimp and avocado filled roll with sliced raw tuna on top with tobiko and a spicy mayo. It was really good. Also, I would recommend the tempura rolls. They are also really well priced and delicious. Another thing I must mention is that they give each table for free are warm edamame and a tiny dish of cucumber salad with bay shrimp. The service was also very prompt and friendly. Seattle style sushi at Everett prices. The service is, as always, hit or miss but Aki-san behind the bar runs the place like a general and keeps the entire kitchen spotless. If you sit at the bar he'll either joke or flirt with you while prepping whatever you want. Never had an issue with substitutions or requests, which makes it wonderful since sushi is all about preference. As for food quality, he preps the entire fish right in front of you while you eat so you know for sure you're getting the real deal. Tell Aki-san you like something and he'll toss you more of it, or suggest you try something like it. You like squid? Have some octopus my friend. Walking here in the rain from my Everett apartment, I was always greeted with big smiles and hot green tea as soon as I walked in. Aki-san noticed my silly hood was red panda and we got talking about Asia while he was making my Zen Special. This was my go-to, month after month in Washington, and always reliable. Except mondays. Aki-san's day off is monday and his apprentice runs the show. Monday is when the rolls are super spicy and the cuts are just a little bit off. Good if you like the Suicide Roll, or super 'spicy tuna' - Ow. It was here I discovered I actually like surf clam and raw sea scallop, and for that I can thank Sushi Zen and Aki-san with both my business and a top shelf review. We started off with miso soup and sunomono, which comes with your meal, and assorted tempura, calamari, gyoza and edamame. The tempura and calamari were fried to perfection, not at all greasy and light. The calamari was very tender and flavorful and was topped with a citrusy cream sauce and the edamame was addictive. I could have eaten the whole bowl by myself. It so happened that we all ordered the salmon-ikura don for our entree. I was a bit disappointed that the salmon sashimi was sliced paper thin but it was a delish bowl of ikura goodness. For $18.95, they could have put a bit more salmon. The plum wine that I got went well with this dish. Sushi Zen is a cute place in a strip mall. It is small so it filled up pretty quick during the dinner rush. The staff was friendly and attentive. The price is average for a Japanese restaurant. They also remember their customers. It was my friend's sister's second time to dine there and the waitress remembered her. I LOVE this place! I've come here enough times the staff actually remembers me! Everyone is extremely friendly and I have never had a bad experience. I have food allergies and I am vegan the staff was really easy to work with to figure out what I can eat. They actually went over every ingredient in the salad dressing to make sure I can eat it! And they actually remember what I order most of the time I go there. The vegan/vegetarian rolls are great! I just wish there were more Vegan sushi options! I usually order the tofu salad and a few avocado rolls. It would be awesome if they made a vegan roll with gluten free fried tofu and some other tasty ingredients! The head chef is very friendly too! The sushi at the Fred Meyers on the Bothell Everett Highway is a hundred times better than this place. The service was terrible, we were seated at the bar and it took almost 20 minutes for us to be even be acknowledged while we were sitting there. The miso soup was lukewarm. The green tea was lukewarm. We ordered gyoza as an appetizer and we didn't get it till the end of our meal cause it was forgotten twice, the California roll had all the normal ingredients however the role was mushy. The gyoza we're bland very greasy, sauce they brought with the gyoza I had no flavor. The shrimp tempura was undercooked and was doughy. It took 3 request for napkins and to request to get our tea refilled. The folks sitting at the tables got a lot more attention and service then the folks sitting at the bar. I'm not from the Washington area, so I always think that's a good sign. We were seated right away and our server was very attentive and came back often to check up on us. I ordered the 10 piece Nigiri with a spicy tuna roll. The nigiri was very fresh and knew the difference from Chicago sushi. There's also wasabi underneath the fish, so be cautious of that before dipping into your soy sauce that was wasabi. The prices I thought were a little overpriced, but the freshness of the fish was worth it. Good food and nice service. Oh cannot forget about the Fried Ice Cream!! A must try! Been there twice. 1st time with a date and the fish was good. My only complaint was the sake selection very poor. (As in no selection at all) You can only get one type of hot sake. If you don't drink then this is the spot for you. Sushi Zen's strong point is their sushi, of course. I've been here many, many times in the last several years, but in all honesty the last few times have not been as great as the first several. I do feel as though the food here went downhill sometime a couple of years ago. Tonight, we both opted for the Kitchen Bento. This comes with your choice of entrée, i.e. Teriyaki, Katsu, and a few others, along with veggie and prawn tempura, white rice, Gyoza, and California rolls. While everything was flavorful, the main entrée in the box is the Teriyaki. My chicken was literally just a grilled chicken breast, not marinated at all, no seasonings at all, with a smattering of teriyaki sauce. As my husband said, it is like they rely solely on the sauce to call it Teriyaki. I've had MUCH better teriyaki at your run-of-the-mill Teriyaki joint like Toshi's. The Teriyaki Beef is a little more tasty than the chicken, and is more like sliced flank steak with the aforementioned smattering of teriyaki sauce. I don't remember it being like this when we first started going to this restaurant. The only other comment I would have to say in regards to that, is that although it was a Friday night, it wasn't all that busy, but our food still arrived to our table luke warm. Having said that though everything was tasted fantastic. We like the tempura, and their sushi is excellent. They give you a few appetizers to start with as well, namely cucumber and shrimp salad, and miso soup. Both are quite good. All in all, I do recommend sushi Zen because the restaurant itself is nice, seems clean, the staff is friendly, and their sushi is great. Just be careful when you start to veer off the beaten path for something other than that. read more
