Kilauea is the new Hanalei and I'm here for it when things are starting to get crowded every where else. Sushi girl is ahead of the curve bringing ono rolls and poke to the area. Legend and uncle crabby were good but I'd say overall there was too much rice in all the rolls and they were lacking a bit of flavor. Super long wait. Was originally estimated 20-30min. Ending up getting it closer to the hour. Guy who took our order seemed nice enough so he gets the star and was apologetic when we finally got our food. Otherwise, I would have given it a zero. Some employee and her friends showed up and got their sushi first in front of other waiting customers. And chatted loudly. Seemed unprofessional. My partner went in a couple of times kindly asking about the food, they kept delaying it and somehow the employee on their off day gets to come in and get their food first. Sure they might have called it in ahead of time, but fixing yourself and your buddies a plate while there are customers waiting doesn't look good. I think she might have stayed behind to help for a few minutes but ultimately was there to get her food and be unprofessional, cuz even I wouldn't have done that cuz I worked in food service. I would have waited. Plus, my partner and I got really queasy after. They cut out the maki rolls and spread it out to make it look like a lot but it wasn't. And the fish and other ingredients inside didn't lead to a good taste. My partner ended up throwing up in the middle of the night and I had nausea from it. (We eat sushi and poke every other week, so it couldn't have been us not being used to raw fish). Ultimately a waste of our night and of our money. Give a refund. Save yourself the trouble, go to another sushi spot. The bookstore/bakery next door was significantly better, choose to head there instead. Sushigirl, do better. Do more staff training for quality control and customer service. If you're going to bastardize sushi, then season your rice. Also, tell your employees who come on their off days to fix their stink eye. read more

Came here for dinner and was quite impressed by how good the sushi tasted. The wait was about 30 minutes and tbh the sushi only looked ok. But once we started eating it we were surprised with the burst of flavor and freshness. If you're not in a hurry you should definitely try. There are lots of tables nearby with coverage. This isn't our first time at sushigirl, we try to come here each time we're in Kauai - which is about 2x a year. This review is not related to the food, which is pretty good - fish is fresh, but you can get fresh sushi in many parts of Kauai. This review is related to the extremely slow service - there's always usually a wait, but this was extreme. It took almost an hour to prepare our 3 items - a roll, rito & masubi. We got there right when they reopened at 4pm and were quoted 15 minutes. Between the time we ordered and we got our food, they got out about 4 orders - including ours. Possible the staff is new and inexperienced, but they're not doing the business any favors if they're only getting out 4 orders in an hours time. As you can imagine, there were a bunch of unhappy people waiting around along with us that came after. Many of them checked back in to make sure their order was in the system. Love this spot but will probably skip next time if the service remains this slow. read more

The only other contender was at a food truck on the north shore in Oahu--try both! We're on a Shaka Guide self-guided tour and just went out to view the lighthouse. We saw a patch of restaurants and of course I had to see if there were any not-to-miss. We found Sushigirl in a grouping of boutiques, food trucks and cafes. There is outdoor seating at tables and benches and staff is friendly. We both ordered the Haen'a poke bowl (spicy ahi) with salad and rice. The flavors and textures were perfection! We also got the tea, which was flavorful and just the right amount of sweetness. Another reviewer mentioned that the rice didn't have enough vinegar. Either they adjusted it or the rice has EXACTLY the right amount of vinegar. I could not recommend a stop here more! If you're not too hungry, share the bowl. read more

This place is super average - I'm not sure why it gets all the rave. We ordered the Spicy T Roll, a Poke Bowl, and Miso Soup. The Spicy T Roll and Poke Bowl were OK. They were way too expensive for what they were. $16-$18 for one, basic roll? I've had much better rolls for half the price. The Miso Soup had a very odd flavor - I think they used red miso paste. I don't know what it was the weekend we were in Kauai, ironically the weekend that supposedly falls on International Poké Day. It was just our bad luck that several grocery stores on north shore were out. One shop even closed on Saturdays. Luckily we came upon this poke stand. Not too many poke options, but there other entree options (sushi, rolls etc). My plate didn't look like much but after camping for a few days it sufficed. I thought service was slow. There wasn't a lot of shade for the outdoor seating and the restrooms didn't have running water to wash your hands. The outdoor area is shared among other surrounding shops and businesses. read more

Want leftover rice? Come here! I don't understand how this restaurant has 4.5 stars. We ordered the Sunrise poke bowl ($21) and the salmon, avocado, and cucumber Musubi ($9). Firstly, the rice to fish ratio on the poke was pitiful, and among 4 people sharing the poke plate, there was still a good amount of rice left. Secondly, the musubi was mostly rice, with the cucumber being around the same size as the salmon, which was not very large. It was pretty bland too, making it hard to justify the price. We did enjoy the goat cheese and the seaweed stems that were on the poke and service was good, which is why I'm giving this place 2 stars. read more

This is the best sushi I've had on the island so far! They have plenty of options but not so much that you end up standing there for 20 minutes just figuring out what to get haha. We had to wait about 40 minutes to get our order but they also do call-in to go orders so they were cranking orders out non-stop! Just goes to show how good they are Their truck is located in a super cute shopping complex right by Kilauea Park! There are plenty of public benches so you can eat it "there" or take it with you. Personally for us, way too much rice was used and the rice tasted kind of old or something, just not fresh. The fish itself did taste fresh but overall, it was just ok. There's nothing quite like it! This place is amazing!! There are a number of other restaurants and local shops in the area / market. However, this one stands out from the rest. Their menu is amazing and truly difficult to make a bad decision. I ordered the Legendary Sushi Burrito with salmon and a Lil Miso Soup and their homemade hibiscus tea. Everything is freshly made to order. The staff was super kind and welcoming. The burrito was a blast of flavor with every bite, and the yum yum sauce was a perfect pair. It's a great meal after a day at the beach, so fresh and delicious. They have a little outdoor seating area for you to enjoy and explore the surrounding shops.
