Went there for lunch today with a co-worker, arrived around 1145. There was 10 tables maybe when we arrived. Waiter took our order pretty quick. Ordered 2 chicken teryaki tempura bento boxes and one to go, figured it would be quick. Our order came out around 1240 and it was wrong. We wanted to complain but at this point it took an hour to get the food so we just told them to fire the to go order so we can leave. Food was bland and the roll was soggy. When we asked when the to go order would be ready they said any minute, so we paid our bill. Around 115 the order finally came out and it was wrong!!!! We complained and they blamed it on the new chef. Nevermind the managers or owners were walking around slamming ticket books on the bar and the staff seemed pissed that orders were taking so long, but not one apology from management, just from our server. This place was not worth the money and obviously not worth the time. I advise staying clear of this place and trying Sushi Moon, Love, or Ninja sushi over this place. read more

The food was fresh and absolutely delicious! My husband and I had the Redbull roll, cajun roll, ex-girlfriend role, and tempura. The service was phenomenal. The thing I'm most appreciated is that when our waiter brought the check she did not automatically hand it to the male (my husband) rather she gave me (the female) the check. I noticed this little japaneese sushi place and decided to stop by and try it out. Low and behold that has been the best decision i could have ever made. Its a lovely little japaneese themed restaurant that has not been commercialized. The staff goes out of the way to ensure everything is good. The food is amazing and we go every chance we get. I travel on business and eat sushi all over the U.S. This was some of the best, freshest, best prepared sushi I have eaten, like in the top 5-10 %. The wine prices are high like everywhere nowdays. They price a glass of wine at the wholesale bottle price. But here the wineglass was large with a generous pour, so more reasonable. The service was informal but great. On the dark side, ambiance wise. No sushi cooler bar to sit at, but no big deal. I would make an effort to return here. read more

The place is really nice and the staff are all friendly. We ordered Chicken Terriyaki, Pork Ramen, Sushi rolls. The chicken terriyaki isn't great.too dry and is not flavorful. sushi ain't that great either. The ramen soup is the best. Tastes really delicious and not salty. For chicken terriyaki and sushi, I would go to Love Sushi (just across the street) all day. But for Ramen, I will go to Sushi Ko. I wouldn't mind having Screaming Orgasm all day too. read more

My brother came from out of town and we decided to go out for sushi. Got on Yelp and chose Sushiko. The atmosphere was a pleasant surprise, the service was friendly and relatively fast, and the food was very good. We enjoyed the some of the fusion touches, although I do prefer traditional sushi. I only gave four stars because I compare every sushi bar/restaurant to my absolute favorite place (which is not in Bakersfield), and no one has every compared, so take that in to account. Five stars! The waitress made my boyfriend and I feel right at home. Sat at the bar and the sushi chef gave us a few samples of different sauces for no reason other than a suggestion that he meticulously created and arranged for us . So awesome. Eating at Sushi Ko was an all around incredible experience. I have severe allergic reactions (I go into anaphylaxis shock) when I consume anything that contains wheat. Most servers tend to not take allergies seriously, especially now with the whole gluten free fad. My boyfriend and I have both been in the restaurant industry for 10+ years, so we both know good and bad service and we know how little seriousness some servers take in regards to the severeness of allergies. Taylor, our server, was extremely patient, understanding and attentive. The owner was on the floor as well, which is always nice and refreshing. The chef was extremely understanding as well. Taylor (who only takes tables when it's busy, because he said he normally buses and used to work in the dish pit), was phenomenal and should definitely be promoted to a full-time server. I wish I lived closer to Sushi Ko so I could frequent it more often. The food was just as amazing as the service. I recommend this restaurant with the highest regard possible. read more

My family and I have always enjoyed Sushi Ko including both the food and the service. However, tonight my husband ordered the Rainbow Roll and one of the sushi pieces was riddled with bones. We brought it to the attention of our waitress who promptly told the sushi chef. The waitress returned and was apologetic and told us "thank you for letting us know". We expected to receive another piece of sushi, the chef to come to our table and ask my husband what would he like prepared, or at least to have a nominal charge taken off our bill. Nothing was done, not even the offering of a complimentary dessert (which we would have graciously declined). Such poor customer service will resonate with me next time we want to go out for sushi. read more

I have eaten here for lunch about 3 times now and have been satisfied each time. Great service and friendly waiting staff. They have happy hour midday of buy 2 rolls and get a third free. By far the best place for sushi all around. I've tried many different sushi places but none like this. The fish is always fresh the food is very colorful and very please and the hospitality is the best I've seen from anyone around town. The owner loves to even interact with his customers. Passes all the sushi places here by far. If you want some real sushi and not some knock off over priced stuff go to sushiko. Went there for dinner on a Tuesday and waited for over 10 minutes for someone to come over and greet us after we were seated. There were 2 waiters, and they went to every single table except for ours. They even looked at us, and either walked over to talk to another table or to clean up the mess of people who had already left. We got up and walked out without anyone ever saying a word to us. WARNING- The 5 star reviews must be from owners or managers, don't trust those reviews. I tried this place recently, about 2 weeks ago, and was very disappointed. The prices were extremely high, and the food was neither creative nor tasty. Anyone who knows even the slightest bit about good sushi and/or rolls will be sorely disappointed as well. It felt like 90% of the rolls on the menu contained some degree of "crab meat" (basically super cheap filler), and of those around 2/3 of them were fried and filled with spicy mayo. Salmon was also on everything, most likely used because it's also fairly cheap (Note- in Japan, they usually don't eat salmon raw due to risk of contracting a large tapeworm larvae it can carry- raw Salmon is an American thing, eat it raw at your own risk). I opted to go for some sashimi first, so I got an order of Albacore sashimi. The quality of the albacore was not very good... also, they seared it without me asking for it (common practice and not a huge issue), but they also put a large amount of sriracha on every peice as well! Wtf? Who does that to a sashimi order? The quality of fish overall was not very good, at least not on the day I was there. It was also very difficult to get the server to bring us that little disposable paper menu that you use to tally how many of each type of item you would like to order (Not sure what that is called)- every sushi place uses these, so I'm not sure why getting a hold of one was such a struggle. The decor was a complete mess (including the very large eyesore of a half dead fish tank that looked like it wasn't even being used- the lights were off, and I couldn't even tell if there was any water in it), and the restaurant was very dark in some places, without much lighting in the area I was sitting at. One side of the room had a few Ikea chandeliers painted red and black, which is apparently impressive to some people in bako. Doesn't help light the rest of the dang room, like where I was sitting! So dark! In contrast, everyone who likes this place should try Ichiban sushi- it's also a small sushi place in a strip mall, but with MUCH lower prices, and they have a very large and fairly creative menu. I prefer the ichiban on Oswell- underrated IMO. Yes, it's small and crowded, but it's also teriffic. And no, I don't work at Ichiban, nor am I shilling for them- it's just my honest opinion. If you want a romantic place, definitely don't go to Sushiko- I am still confused as to why everyone says it has a nice ambiance and upscale decor. Maybe it's a different location? We visited Toro Sushi for the first time today. What a pleasant surprise. We asked to sit at the sushi bar. There were only two other groups seated in the place. The waitress informed us that they were under new management as of three weeks ago . We started with garlic edamame and cucumber salad both was fresh and flavorful. We then moved onto our main meals. The hubby ordered the fresh sashimi plate. It was pricy but well worth every penny. The fish was much higher quality than you find elsewhere in town . My son ordered white tuna, eel and yellowtail , again great quality and freshness. I had the garlic roll and the seared ahi tuna called the screaming o. Both were wonderful in presentation and taste. We were bummed that so few people seemed to be visiting this jewel. So, I wanted to post my review ASAP so that you all would know what a great sushi experience we had. Sucks!!! Way too expensive for some dry sushi and oily noodles. Don't get me started with their complimentary miso soup they shouldn't even offer that mess. First time coming to this sushi restaurant. For sushi in Bakersfield it was pretty good. Quite pricey compared to other sushi places I've been too in the area an out of the area. The ramen was disgusting! Very watered down, definitely don't try it! Not only that but I found eggshells in the ramen and even bit into it. So gross. They apologized and gave me ice cream but honestly I wish they would just have not have made me paid it. The mochi ice cream wasn't my cup of tea so it just made my experience worse. My boyfriend and I loved this place so much we went twice in one weekend! The chefs are fun and you can tell they love what they do. Good quality sushi! When you walk up to the place you almost think its closed but then stepping inside its great, clean and nicely decorated. Even have a nice outside seating. When I think of great sushi, I think "clean", "fresh", "neat"... My first experience at this place was none of the above. Decor was nice, but aside from that, I found it a bit of a distraction that the prep area was very cluttered and unorganized. So i waited with two co-workers of mine and had a beer or two until the food arrived. Decent, but not great. We finished our meal while sitting at the sushi bar, and not one peep of conversation between chef and our party, or anyone else at the bar for that matter. I like the banter and interaction between chef and patrons that usually comes with sitting at the sushi bar. After finishing the meal, with a few pieces of what-have-you rolls, I noticed about 5 or 6 gnats scattered around my friends' plates... Not a good sign if fish is kept fresh. I never got asked for refills... On beer no less (more $ for them, right?) and had to ask on 3 occasions for a new beer. There was only about 4 or 5 other patrons aside from our party of 3, no excuses for poor service especially when there are 3 servers. read more

The food here is not worth what you pay for. I ordered teriyaki chicken to-go, very small and I didn't even get the teriyaki sauce! Which is one of the main things! Also found out that employees there lose 55% of their tips.The servers there deserve so much more because they work so hard and don't get the credit for it. Will not come back. Not authentic Japanese food. The sushi rice lacks vinegar, the ramen they used came from instant noodle. I know ramen in Japanese means "instant noodle" but I haven't been to a Japanese restaurant that actually serves instant noodle as their ramen. The miso soup totally tastes like the package soup I buy from supermarkets. Katsu was over fried. If you want authentic Japanese food, do not come here! Service was good tho. Had been here before and had mediocre service, went back for the first time in a while and was extremely pleased that the service was markedly better. The wait staff was all fresh faces. (Who I presume to be) the owner is all over the restaurant bussing tables and keeping the wait staff on their toes. The sushi tasted even fresher than before, as well (or maybe I was just craving sushi more...) Just a heads up that the sushi comes out very quickly and at a staggered interval. If you've ordered a bunch of rolls, you may get them one at a time over a 5-10 minute period. Anyway, best sushi I've had in the increasingly crowded Bakersfield sushi scene. read more
