3.5 stars really. The sashimi is nice here, large pieces and clean cut. But service was a bit lacking (we would've ordered more beer if asked) and other pieces somewhat lackluster-- edamame overcooked and too salty, seaweed salad a little thick and oily. We only went there as we were at the Residence Inn right next door and could walk here, but you know what, it was good! They had some sweet women serving us, they brought our kid some free edamame and miso, which keeps him noshing and busy, which keeps mom and dad happy and relaxed. they had lots of good special rolls, with the kids of stuff we really like (tuna, salmon, avocado).. this was a good score! The rolls were good! The kid had a chicken terriyaki roll, which was meh. but the miso and edamame was solid.. and the kids enjoyed a yellow tail/scallion, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It's small and a little dingy.. and there were 2 buckets of dirty dishes on the floor, so i'm skeptical the place could pass a surprise health inspection for that - but the food tasted fresh and good. the pices were not bad... 6 rolls and 2 beers for about $70, without tip. read more

Haven't been here for a long time. Our family of four came here Friday evening and the restaurant was quote busy. We ordered a maki special platter. $80 for 9 different maki rolls. That's a lot of food for 4 people. We loved the maki rolls. Presentation was OK. Taste great. read more

You might miss it if you're not looking for it, so I'm glad I stumbled into it purely by happenstance since the original goal had been to get pho. They've got a good selection of house rolls with the usual suspects (california roll, lion king, etc.) and the free edamame was a nice touch. The rolls are average size, two rolls and two appetizers would probably work out well for two moderately hungry individuals. The venue isn't huge, but it isn't totally tiny, either, one could conceivably carry on an engaging conversation here without too much temptation to eavesdrop (well, maybe as long as the company is comparatively more entertaining than the other conversations going on around you). Bottom line: I like this spot, I'll try to remember it's here and wander to it when I'm heading south and feeling the craving for some sushi. read more

Probably the fastest service I've ever experienced at a Japanese restaurant. The food was great - based on the reviews below, it seems like not ordering a sushi roll was a good idea. I had the salmon shioyaki, three lightly salted and grilled fillets served with a small side of salad and rice. My friends ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and a pan-fried rendition of chicken udon, which was tasty. Overall, the portions were generous and we ended up barely finishing our meals. read more

I've been here a few times now and have always had a good experience. Service is excellent, super friendly and very attentive. Last time I came I had the salmon teriyaki and sashimi combination dinner. The salmon was quite tasty and wasn't dry, thank goodness, the salmon teriyaki dish always seems to be overcooked wherever I eat it. The sashimi was delish, and the miso soup and salad were pretty decent too. However, the miso soup was a lil sweet and didn't have that slightly sour aftertaste that I'm used to, hm, no big complaints though. Portions are pretty reasonable, so are the prices. The free edamame is nice too. It's not one of my favorite Japanese places to eat but I wouldn't have a problem coming here if that's what I'm craving. read more

Damn my curious stomach pains :( Couldn't eat a damn piece of delicious looking sushi due to my painful stomach problems post eating almost ANYTHING. As I was sitting in my misery, watching my friends devour beautiful rolls topped with bright green seaweed, smoked salmon, and bright red tuna, I started salivating and asked the waitress if I could please just have some udon soup with noodles - no veggies, no meat, no love. She didn't quite understand. I then busted out the Korean, and voila! A beautiful bowl of clean, veggie udon soup appeared. The broth had an earthy mushroom flavor which soothed my tummy and I was even daring (or starving) enough to try the chewy, slurp-able udon noodles. The service here is insanely nice. Aside from the typically free miso soup, we received tons of edamame (how life should be), and after I told the waitress it was my gf's bday and expected one scoop of ice cream with a candle, she brought out green tea ice cream for ALL 12 OF US!! WWOOWEEEE! And aside from the free goodies, she was ever so attentive and friendly with a beautiful smile. Only negative is how strangely quiet this place is even when it's full! The faux-plaster volcano that adorns the wall must give off a quieting command to those who eat in this quaint, but beautifully lit sushi restaurant. $$Decently priced for sushi - $15 split between 12 for TONS of quality rolls (judging by my eyes) and a bowl of udon - lots of freebies as well. read more

I've only been here for lunch but have gone several times. Everytime I order the same thing but at least that means I like what I order! The bento boxes here are pretty good, but it's pretty standard for most Japanese restaurants. My most memorable experience here however is one day coming in for lunch with my boss and I see a sign on the cash register that says "Mr. _________ of _________ company, we have your credit card" and it took me a second to realize it was my boss' credit card they had which he had been looking for for weeks. read more

For me, this place falls in the middle range. I don't love it, I don't hate it. I'm not going to run out and recommend it to all my friends but I wouldn't be opposed to going back the next time I'm in the mood for sushi. They start you off with complimentary edamame which is nice. We ordered a bento dinner (chicken teriyaki and tempura), the Sushiko Special (california roll, sashimi, around 8 pieces of nigiri), and the hamachi collarbone appetizer. Everything was fine. Nothing stellar, nothing offensive. The sashimi was fresh but I agree with the other reviewer that the slices were a bit blockish. The service is friendly and attentive. Even a tea guzzler like me didn't have to ask for a refill even once. The place is Korean-owned which may matter to the sushi snobs but it's a decent place overall. Decor is comfortable. I gave this place 4 stars but really it is more of a 3.5. Its rating is this purely for their spicy scallop roll and because of they're good service. The people always remembered me and my boyfriend and it has become "our spot" for sushi and a usual go-to restaurant if it is just the two of us. I strolled into this tiny joint for lunch. I ordered a Philly roll and Ca. Roll combo. For $10.00, I would not say it was worth it. The portions I thought were tiny. I think they keep the tiny restaurant dark in there so you cant tell how small your rolls are. The soup was warm at best, but their salad is awesome. Would I go there again? Sure, only because it is next to my office, but I don't really recommend eating here. So we were about to go eat pho around the corner, but at the last minute my friend decided he wanted sushi, and i had no preference one way or another. So we walk in, and we're the only ones there....Forshadowing anyone? (ok so it was lunch on sat, not their busiest time) While i didn't expect this place to be stellar, the disappointments began to stack up like a mountain of tears. Lets start with the food. I had a tempura roll with tonkatsu/sashimi lunch combo. My friends got various roll assortments and one got tenzaru soba combo. The miso soup tasted like water, and had almost no additional ingredients (green onion, no tofu, seaweed) which made it incredibly bland. This did not bode well..... I have plenty of gripes about the food. The tempura rolls were rolled too loose and cut too thin, which made every single piece crumble before i could even dip it into the soy sauce and wasabi, NOT good. My friend got a sakura roll which is a roll made from cucumber instetad of nori seaweed wrapping. It sounds like a good idea in theory, and ive seen them before, but this one suffered the same fragile, collapsing fate as my tempura roll. The tonkatsu was too dense and had too much excess egg in the coating. The sashimi, while fresh, was cut horrible, looking more like fat cubed chunk more than an evenly sliced, nicely shaped piece of fish. My friend's tenzaru was average, the noodles cooked a little too much. To give them some credit, the service was pretty good, although the lady informed us that we would all be getting miso soup, but charged extra for those who didnt get lunch combos. It would have been nice to know of the charge beforehand, especially since the soup was so bad. Despite by tempura roll being an ill constructed failure, the taste wasnt bad, i just wish i could have ate everything together. While i suppose i always have reservations about Korean owned Japanese restaurants, its not often i come across one that disappoints me so much. It seems like they totally take Japanese food at face value and fail to recognize the nuances and quality that makes the food good. I hope this isn't a trend. Bottom Line: While not expensive, i can't justify paying for food like this. Skip it. read more

Had lunch today and it was okay, not the worst and not the best. I would probably check out other places around the area next time. They give you free edamame. The lunch bento 2 items was 8.99 and I had the bulgogi and Sashimi. The miso that came out was on the sweet side and the salad had a sweet dressing. Located conveniently near the corner of San Antonio & El Camino Real, this pleasant Japanese restaurant pulls off the motif rather well. The sushi ranges from good to very good (try the fire cracker tempura appetiser, as well as their namesake roll). The wait staff is quite friendly and helpful, and prompt with service. The ambiance is quite pleasant featuring themed music & decor, and comfortable seating. When I first sat down I was immediately brought Edamame (soy beans) and a Dressed up Oyster. The Advanced Sushi combination was good with a respectable assortment of sushi. The rolls were very well made, and about average in size. Perhaps most notably even the larger rolls did not easily fall apart when grasped (even if a little ineptly). While I fully enjoyed the Sushi, the Udon soup was only decent. If you have an Udon craving you could fill it here, but it's not really exceptional. If Sushi is your goal, Sushiko is definatly worth checking out. read more

My friend got the oyako-don and I got a kaisen-don. Mine was so horrible that I asked my friend to swap with me, but his was also terrible because there were all these random vegetables in the oyako-don. Oyako-don is supposed to be simple, rice with really juicy fried chicken thigh and an oeey gooey egg. The execution of this very simple dish was so poor. It was a huge disappointment. Sushiko has been our go to place for lunch and after work for the past couple of years. The sushi is good and they make very good rolls at good prices. More often than not we get the lunch special bento box either salmon or chicken teriyaki. The other night during the heat wave we were in and I guess they don't have air conditioning or they chose to keep it off. Instead they kept the front door wide open, The place always appears clean and the bathroom was spotless. That is, if you ignore the cockroaches that lurk there. Went for lunch today. Very attentive service. The lady came to us twice for our order before we were ready. She was totally accomodating and didn't abandon us so that we didn't have to wait once we had decided. Ordered miso soup and several rolls. Everything was exceptionally fresh and well-presented. They actually put the different rolls we were sharing on one big plate which was a much classier presentation than other places where I've had them each on their own plate. I found Sushiko after wasting 30 minutes next door at Spicey Leaves (see previous review), I had about 25 minutes left of lunch and decided we'd try our luck with SUSHIKO. We were immediately greeted by a very friendly woman who sat us down and brought us tea and edamame while we checked out the menu. We were low on time so we both went with the bento box. a little under 10 minutes later, our food came to us, and boy did it look good! We were able to eat in the little time we had leftover, asked for our check and then found out that ON TOP OF the great service and the delicious food, we were given a 10% lunch special discount. So, thank you I guess, to Spicey Leaves - thanks to your disregard of MY time, I found a great little Japanese hole-in-the-wall restaurant I know I will visit again. read more

This is my favorite restaurant. These are just a few reasons why: The staff are really nice. The chicken teriyaki is REALLY GOOD (The textures and the flavors are on point) The gyoza is the best I've ever had from any sushi restaurant The California roll tastes better than most sushi restaurants because it's at the right temperature, and the crab is high quality (It certainly tastes better than the imitation crab they use at some sushi places) They automatically give you free miso soup and free tea ...and they have free lollipops at the door! :) The only reason why it's rated any less than four stars is because all (or most) of the low ratings were written from before 2018, before the restaurant switched to new management. (Since Sushiko switched to better management, they have consistently served higher quality food.) read more

Get the nigiri! It is beautifully cut and the fish is very good quality. The rice they use is a great base and has a very subtle sweet taste that brings out the taste in the fish. During my visit the chef even sent over a half order of spicy crab sushi on the house, very good! This place has a very cozy family feel. The decor is very casual and it feels like a family business. The staff is very sweet and take great pride on the business, how often do you feel like the hostess, waiter, and chef all love their work? I did see another patron cancel an order of sake and it got lost in translation, where the staff apologized and sent the sake over immediately... The request was lost in translation... So do confirm that your request is understood and it will be received warmly. If I hadn't only been visiting from out of town, I'd b back again! read more

I go here often for lunch. Its a good Japanese restaurant for lunch specials. They give you a complimentary edaname which is nice. For the lunch bento specials, the bulgogi is good, its a popular korean beef dish. I think the owners are korean so thats why you find it here. My favorite combo there is the bulgogi, tempura and tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet). For the tempura they give you two big shrimp pieces which i really like, unlike the small ones they give you at miyake's which is also nearby. Their california rolls are okay, nothing special but I'd rather get the meat instead. The two item lunch bento is more than enough for most people but i'm a piggy so i usually get three. For rolls, the Sexy ban roll is very good, my personal favorite. I like the scallops they add on it. Has shrimp tempura in the middle. Rainbow roll is good too. The Palo Alto roll is good if you like spicy tuna. They also have a lion king roll which is okay, kinda small compared to Sushi House in Alameda and the sauce on top is not as good. read more
