This place never disappoints! How can you beat half off sushi!!? The rolls are very generous, and they all taste delicious! I highly recommend the alaskan, el fuego, and crunchy rolls. The hand rolls are also very excellent as well. There's more fish than rice, even till the last bite. If you come here during the week, their specials are really awesome. Great Sushi! Affordable and Fast! I prefer this location to the Escondido Location. There is less seating but the staff is more consistent and I prefer the mood lighting. Either Sushiya has GREAT sushi. I always ask for soypaper instead of seaweed and it never crumbles apart, so their sushi masters must be well versed in their craft. It is always a delicious treat to visit Sushiya and I always leave overly satisfied. I always order the Snow Crab with the soypaper and the Crunchy Roll with soy paper (basically a cali roll with shimp tempura inside). A fun trick is to get Eel Sauce on the side and just sweeten up those rolls a little. So delicious! read more

I have been here two times now and definitely will be back for more! Their main sushi menu is 50% off all day every day, which is awesome :D. I love their crunch roll - only $6! The only gripe I have about this place is that service takes a very long time. Wether there are two or just one sushi chef's, it takes a long time to get rolls to the table, and when paying my waitress stood behind me watching me, which was...kind of weird. My first time here. I am gluten free (celiac symptoms) so I chanced it. They do not have Tamari (GF soy sauce) so I didn't have any to go with my veggie roll. One of the better sushi places in San Marcos I feel their sushi is fresh and if ur a fan of albacore their Albacore Special is right up your pallet. Menu consists of a shaded price region which indicates half off rolls where you'll find a majority of their special rolls. Average price for a roll is between $5 and $8. I came here with my wife and two kids today for lunch. Now first of all, my 3 y.o.'s diet primarily consists of chicken nuggets, pizza, and Panda Ex. Between that and not having a nap, this probably shouldn't have been our first choice. Not only was he acting out, which then stressed me out, but we ended up dumping a plate of snowballs on my pants and somewhat losing all shreds of decency. The staff was amazing in handling this and prepared a new plate of the dumped food as well as replacing my beer that had gotten warm. They gave me a towel to help clean my pants and acted as if nothing was amiss. I cannot gush enough about them. Outstanding food and amazing service. Ordered here a few times and always been pretty good. Tonight was unacceptable. Placed an order for pick up came in 25 min later and was told by hostess that they made a mistake and they gave my order to another person and they are remaking my order. No big deal mistakes happen. I take a seat and wait for it to be remade. About 5 min later a gentleman comes in with the wrong food and to pick up his correct order. I watch as another worker there takes his incorrect order, which would be my order, open it, inspect it, then repackage it and try to give it to me. That is completely unacceptable and not sanitary. This guy said he took it to his home and opened it then brought it back. No disrespect to him, but I'm not eating that. So I said to the lady you just revised that food. she lied right to my face and said no we just remade it. So I said show me the old food, and she pointed to a box. I asked her to open it and it was some dumplings not 4 rolls of sushi and some nigiri that I ordered. TERRIBLE!!!!!! Very unprofessional and extremely unsanitary. My husband and I are big time sushi lovers. We have gone to some fancy places and spent lots of money and little tiny rolls that were delicious but just ridiculously small. We have been here more than 8 times and have been happy everytime. The fish may be pre-cut but always fresh. Since this resteraunt is a chain, my husband and I have been on a mission to find a better sushi joint. But every time we go out to sushi we wish we would have gone to Sushiya instead. We love the attentive service from the Sushi Chefs to the servers. We have been coming here for quite some time now and it's our "go to" place for sushi. So we were visiting someone at Palomar Hospital and were starving when we left at 8:50 Sat night. We checked Sushiyama's hours- open until 10 pm- and headed over. We tried to walk in at 9 pm and were blocked by a waiter who said, "Sorry, we're closed". Confused, we mumbled "But you're open until 10 tonight..." Horrible service!! I've been here before, and liked the sushi, but the service was a little slow. I didn't have much time today so I showed up at five, right when they opened for dinner, and ordered two rolls to go. Two rolls, people! I sat, and waited, and waited, and waited. I watched the place fill up, and EVERY SINGLE PERSON get served before I got my order. I was the first one in the door, and the first one to order. I would have left but I paid up front. When the waitress finally came with my food, I asked her why it took so long and why I was served after everyone else. Her reply was that there was a different chef making the to go rolls than the chef making the dine-in food. So, you're trying to tell me that it takes one chef forty minutes to make two california rolls, but another chef can prepare food for eight tables full of people, and that is a valid excuse? Honestly... I've tried this place twice. I don't like to write reviews based on first impressions. Both times I went I was with a friend and both times it was not busy. The first time I visited we stood in the front for a good few minutes while the waitress/owner/manager (whoever she was she was important enough to boss the chefs around) avoided eye contact. I brushed it off as a possible bad day or they just got through with a lunch rush. Once seated we waited a while to even be able to order. The waitress didn't seem to have good people skills... if she's the manager or owner it would really benefit to hire someone who knows how to give good service because the food was not good enough to be ignored and treated as if bringing service through the doors of a empty restaurant was a nuisance. I wont be back :) I definitely have my favorite sushi restaurants and I like to expand my list of go to places. Unfortunately this place comes off as a disaster zone... and wont land among that list. The second visit was slightly improved. They actually had an employee who acknowledged her guests and the cook seemed to be in a happier mood. unfortunately after watching how the store operated even the second time they were a little rude. As a guest I don't talk too much. I order what id like, if i want anything i start with a "may I" and end with a "thank you" when my food comes I make eye contact and say "thank you" I haven't had such horrible service from a store in a while... it made me take a step back and put some thought into whether I had come off rude or under-appreciative. This was the latest place we decided to try for sushi... My girl & I walked in around 5:30 pm on a Tuesday and there was no wait for our table. The overall atmosphere was pleasant. Service was quick and friendly. The lights were reasonably low, there was a TV playing a random court show & I don't recall any music playing. We ordered about 3 different things, not too sure what they're called now, as I tend to choose random items off the menu that sound good at the moment, but they were all fresh and delicious. (Of course, I did order an Unagi roll which was very good!). The side of edamame was a bit firm/undercooked...I could have asked them to cook it longer, I'm sure, but it wasn't worth the hassle. Also, they have 50% off particular menu items, which is always a plus. But the second time I went made me never want to spend money there EVER AGAIN. I went there on a Tuesday night (850-915 pm) with my girlfriend and the customer service was absolutely terrible. I waited way too long for my food, The chef didn't care to ask me how I was doing or if our food was good, He didn't even ask me how my food was. After I paid my bill I walked out and the manager walked outside and asked if she could talk to me.... OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT! She came out and asked me if the service was ok, and I instantly thought," oh snap if I don't say it wasn't good she might go in and grill one of her employees or worse..." So I said," it was ok... Not really that great but I guess they were just tried or something" So the manger lady said( in really choppy, hard to understand English with a heavy Korean accent.) " oh well they work really hard and serve you good so you no leave tip" And I was like, "....... Excuse me??" And she said, " you no leave tip the chef work hard and get paid of tips and ..." Then I cut her off and said, " wait, You came outside and pulled me away from my night with my gf just to tell me I didn't leave a tip!?!?" then she went on about it still ... I kept my composer but I was absolutely outraged !!!!!! Then I told her, " what if I didn't have extra change to leave a tip!?" (I paid with a card And I'm saving money.) Then she argued saying that I could've just wrote down an amount for a tip And just to get her out of my face I wrote down $5.00 tip and walked into my car... That's right! I was right by my car!!! With my gf waiting to get in! I paid my tab and the service was terrible! They didn't deserve a tip and she literary made me pay them a freaking tip in the most unprofessional manner I've ever seen in my life!!!! I couldn't believe that woman. I don't care about the chefs And their tip! If they wanted a good tip, why not fill up my water!? Why not ask me how my food is!? Or even say "hello", "welcome", "thanks for coming". They didn't deserve a tip with that crappy service I got! My girlfriend wanted to leave 10 mins into dinner. I was so incensed that I talked about it all the way home... The whole 30 min drive home! This is one of my favorite places. I've eaten here hundreds of times over years. I used to frequent the all-you-can-eat "Mr. Sushi" in Encinitas, but discovered Sushiya (by the same owners) which is closer to me and better. Is this the best sushi in Southern California? No, it isn't (obviously). But, it's pretty darn good, especially considering the price. We're talking "50% off" every day, making Sushiya an incredible value. I'm pretty selective about what I order. I usually just sit at the bar and have sushi. I've had their cooked food as well many times, which is good as cooked food goes. I pass on the nuevo type cutrolls like Crunchy or Albacore Special. I don't get rolls with 20 ingredients drenched in sauces. My favorites are just the basic - nigiri Hamachi Toro, Salmon Toro, Salmon egg, Tobiko, Spider handroll and oysters. Today I had the Uni, which was killer. I had the sweet ebi as well, which was typical; good but nothing special. Service has always been great, but that may have something to do with coming so often. Actually, there was one time there was this new chef who was incompetent and an absolute jerk, but I think he got fired in short order. Four stars for the excellent food and service! The elusive fifth star was just out of reach for the light ambiance. We had a Dragon Roll, Eel Roll, and a Spicy Crunchy Roll as well. The portions were large enough to feed two, and the flavor and freshness was top shelf! This sushi spot is right around the corner from our house, so easy and convenient are the keys for our return visits. The service was attentive and friendly. We each enjoyed a glass of wine and a large Asahi beer. There are signs everywhere promoting menus specials for 50% off "marked items" but we didn't see any marks? Nonetheless when our check arrived our Roll choices must have been marked, because we enjoyed a reduced check. They also have sake for a $1 if you order a large beer...nice touch but I passed as I left my dancing shoes at home. Sushiya is a very nice restaurant, our only constructive critique is the atmosphere. Strip mall eatery comes to mind, but that reality is dashed once the food arrives. Focus on your dinner mate and don't rely on the atmosphere to put you in the mood. Grab your chopsticks and dive in...the food is the star of the show!! read more

I was thoroughly underwhelmed. The service was wonderful but the menu is questionable. My friend is a vegan and she ordered the avocado roll, edamame and sake. The avocado 'roll' was 2 pieces of sushi - if you can call them that. A lot of rice, a thin slice of avocado (near see through) and a bit of dried seaweed tied around it like a belt. Usually the menu will indicate if the item selected is served a a roll, handroll, or pieces. Since her main dish selection was described as a roll, common sense would say you are getting 6-8 pieces from a cut roll - not what was presented. Her sake was more like $14 strawberry juice mixed with rice milk. I was terribly annoyed for her as they charged her $33 for a plate of disappointment. My order was the Hawaiian roll (cali roll with spicy tuna and ponzo sauce on top), and a seaweed salad. The salad was very pretty and tasty. My sushi roll was good too; and an actual roll cut to 8 healthy pieces. Strangely enough my bill was $14 a very excellent price (special that night) but you can see why I was annoyed for my friend.
