Love these guys! Best sushi for the price in North County! Always friendly, polite and clean.

The last time I was at Sushiya was at least 3 years ago. Sushi wasn't memorable and that's why I haven't been back, up until this past Thursday evening. The boyfriend and I met his family here for dinner with most of us ordering curry, or other bento entrees. This 5 stars is for the seafood curry and service. Though I'm not a huge curry fan I have to admit the curry here is so good!!! I only ordered it because 2 others at the table did and it smelled so yummy! Service was efficient and friendly. Honestly I'm gonna be back here very soon for the curry again. Not sure about the sushi but maybe I'll try it sometime. read more

This place is allright, but not as good as Sushiya in Point Loma used to be. I miss that place, and sadly this is not a replacement. Sushi is okay bordering on good, about a 3.5. I'm giving a 2 because the food wasn't horrible, the service however was. We tried this place because they had a picture of a poke bowl on the window. We were sat down quickly which was nice and finally got a menu after asking 2x, we asked the waitress if they had Poke Bowls. She said "oh yes Poke, we have it". I asked what was on it, because it wasn't on the menu. She told us "rice, vegetables, and tuna." I said "You said vegetables, do you mean salad", she said yes. I said ok, can I have salmon instead of Tuna. She said ok. They brought out the rainbow salad (no rice and weird salad dressing). I explained I ordered a Poke Bowl, which took 2 chefs and 2 waitresses to understand what they brought wasn't what I ordered. One of the waitresses grab rice, set it down and said "now it's a Poke Bowl". Ummm, no that's a side of rice with the Rainbow salad. Didn't taste like a poke bowl, no poke sauce either. My receipt even said "Rainbow Salad"! Lol. Don't advertise a poke bowl when your crew doesn't know what it is or that you are offering it. Also, $12.50 for a small salad is insane. Most poke salads are under $8 in the area. Not $12.50 or even the $14.50 the staff said it cost. read more

We walked in (lunch time 230pm), the place was empty and we were still not greeted. We ordered one roll and it took 10 mins to get it. I asked for thin slices of lemon on top of my roll and was charged an extra dollar for that. I've never been charged for lemon, ever! Then the sushi chef disappeared for 10 mins while we waited to put another order in. Bad customer service! Won't be returning. Food was okay. read more

I like that I'm always greeted at the door with, "YOO WAN SUSHI BAH, OH TAYBOH?". Been coming here ever since it first opened and I drop on by every once in awhile. Employees are very nice and service is good. The sushi is delicious. My older brother and I came in one time and voraciously devoured enough food to feed a village of ninjas. Our bill would've originally amounted to about $120 had it not been a "50% off" day. This place gets no stars (if that was a choice). Our server was great but when we ordered something and didn't like it and didn't even eat it they still charged us. 18$ for 1 piece of shrimp we ate. Ridiculous!!!! And then as we were leaving they told us to never come back. Everyone at the table were servers. We all know how restaurants work. So the fact that they wouldn't even take it off the bill (so we still paid for it) and then they tell us to not come back is unbelievable!!! I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here. I live in right across the street from sushiya and it never disappoints me whenever I'm in the mood for some quick sushi. They aren't the highest quality sushi I've had but they are super convenient and good for the prices they have. The staff is always friendly and the food never takes that long to make. ha! i stumbled across this place in an attempt to bring sushi to a friend and #fail haha!. This place blows! I'm sorry, I hate writing bad reviews but who the hell colors their rolls??! I ordered a veggie roll and shrimp tempura and first of all, i'm used to rolls being i don't know like normal sized rolls, no bigger than golf balls usually, and these "rolls"- if you could even call them that were HUGE! like double the size of normal rolls. Can I just say 'Not appealing??' Eww.. it had no flavor and just by looking at them, I had already decided I wasn't going to eat them. I did however, and then didn't even finish them. Oh, and the color?? Yeah, they colored the outside of the roll some green color. Like wtf? hahaha. As far as the shrimp tempura, I have no idea but by looking at that shrimp sticking out of the roll, it didn't look battered in tempura. It looked helpless like some arm sticking out. NEVER again. *Side-note: apparently there's a sushi place across the street called Umai who has bomb rolls?- but i'll have to see that for myself next time haha Sushiya? No. read more

This place has really gone downhill. My friends and I used to come here for decent sushi at a good price. We went back after about 6 months of not going here and the service was absolutely terrible. It took about 10 minutes for someone to come take our order. That wasn't for lack of staff, oh no. Our waitress walked by several times. She even made eye contact with us. It was only after talking to another waitress that she came over and took our order. After that, we heard them laughing and giggling in the corner. No big, right? Well, not until they pointed at our table. I'm not sure what their deal was, but I've never gotten service like that anywhere. This is our sushi place. We have been eating at Sushiya for almost 7 years now and will still drive 45 mintues (since we moved) to eat there. We love the El Fuego, Albacore Special, Crunchy and Spanish rolls. The staff is extremely friendly and amazing. We love the price... 50% off and even 40% if you get it to go. I live 5 mins away from this restaurant, needless to say I come here a lot. I usually have a hard time deciding between Sushiya and Umai Sushi across the street but after tonight I won't have any problem choosing Umai. The sushi was alright but not for the amount of money it cost. But the main problem was customer service from both the sushi chef and our waitress Christina (the older female). This place has slowly been declining in service as years go by. My boyfriend and I went to have dinner on Tuesday night around 8pm and there were only a few people in there so being busy is not an excuse for the rude attitude we received. First - we walked in and were never greeted with a "hi" or "welcome" or anything. So we decided to sit at the sushi bar where the chef continued to pretend we weren't there. Secondly - as our sushi was being handed to us by the chef, Christina interfered, grabbed the plate from me and said "watch out" as she set the plate down in front of me good customer service would have said "excuse me". I then proceeded to ask the CHEF for raw/fresh wasabi (which I've had there before and am fully aware that it is expensive and was willing to pay extra for it) and before the chef could open his mouth CHRISTINA chimed in and said in a rude tone "no we don't have that here!" At this point I was furious. My boyfriend also asked for eel sauce and the chef responded with a "hold on". Not only is this an improper way to speak to a customer, but the tone of voice they used while saying it made it seem like we were a waste of their time. Thirdly - we finished our sushi and our waitress was to busy eating her dinner to refill our drinks or ask us how our dinner was. The chef also didn't ask us how our meal was. We left and gave them a $5.00 tip because the sushi was well prepared but the service was horrible and has driven away a common customer who brings her family there, with sushi tabs of up to $180.00. I would highly recommend ping to Umai Sushi which is across the street from this place. Their prices AND customer service are much better. read more

I was really surprised by the last review. If you're going for the best sushi on Earth, well, I guess 'nuff said. But let's talk specifics here. First off: While the fish might be pre-cut, it tasted fresh and was excellently presented. If you're into rolls (our checking account is usually into rolls as they are the more cost-effective choice most of the time) there are some great combos not to be missed. Top of the list is the spanish roll. Heavens to mergatroid. Salmon on the outside, crab on the inside along with cilantro, green onion, and some other flavorful touches. Really great combination about which I was totally skeptical. Second: If you need kid friendly, this is the place for you. We came in with a toddler. Immediately a brightly colored little hand-sewn mat was placed under a highchair so that we wouldn't have to worry about messes. Next, as soon as he was seated, a plastic, fish-shaped little colorful bowl was brought over with a complimentary serving of rice and a spoon. Next, his drink came in a little cup with a lid and a straw that had been cut down so that it would be easy for him to manage. We honestly felt like they were thrilled our little guy was there with us and were touched. This, for parents, is a thrill that will steal the heart instantly when dining out can often make you feel like a pariah. Third: Three adults and one kid ate until they thought they would pop. Two of these said adults have culinary training and love good food. Each of us was totally happy with the experience, and then were shocked that our bill was under $40, including two large Sapporos. Try Sushiya, unless you're looking for perfectly classic sushi. If you're just looking for some good sushi and a great environment in which to eat it, this place won't let you down. I found nothing at all that I disliked here. One note: the place is small and gets packed out. Be ready for a wait if you're just dropping by for dinner rush. read more

I like their sushi here and they got 50% off certain rolls and i think 40% off the to-go orders. the staff is super friendly and i love it when you open the door to the restaurant and greet you with such a warming welcome in japanese! So whenever we are in San Marcos we go to Umai across the street, but have heard that Sushiya is really good also so we decided to try it Tuesday night. We walked into what I believe may be the smallest sushi place ever, and are immediately greeted by a hostess type girl. They ask if we would like Sushi bar or table, and after looking around to see many people at tables and no one at the bar, we go for the bar. Now, my friend and I are both really weird and at first go to the corner closest to the door, but before sitting down we decide to go to the other end of the bar furthest away from the door. A couple comes in the door, as my friend is sitting down I am standing waiting for her to sit so I can sit down, and the waitress pulls out the chair I am standing in front of for the man that came in. My friend looks at me and we are both kind of confused, my friend asks "are we not allowed to sit here?" the waitress replies "well, uh, you can but he likes to sit here" So I reply "fine, he can sit here then" and we walk out. Great first impression Sushiya. Looks like I will stay with Umai! read more

I am not a snob when it comes to sushi. Here is what I look for in a 5-star sushi joint: fresh fish, tasty combo rolls, and cheap prices. This, to me, is perfectioin. Sushiya is it. The Spanish roll is amazing -- order it unless you are one of the few people who can't/don't eat cilantro. The service is good - the waitstaff are sweet and attentive. The guys at the bar are cool too. To top it off, apparently Thursdays are 1/2 off days. read more

We thought it was great! It was super fresh and not packed even during lunch! The specials were all pretty amazing and they were more than happy to accommodate special requests. I got the protein roll which comes with 4 types of protein and wrapped in a cucumber erred with a seaweed salad. We also got the Tony roll which was similar to a crunchy roll with the addition of spicy tuna. The last roll and the picture of the roll was the popcorn lobster served with eel sauce, spicy mayo and Sriracha which was pretty amazing as well. See sit at the bar since the sushi chefs are all pretty entertaining all in themselves. I would def come back and check out the specials since we went all out and the bill def reflected it but there were 50% off specials and also boxes with a large assortment of different dishes! read more

I came here randomly on a Thursday evening with my family and we just so happened to show up on a 1/2 off day! Yippee!!! We ended up getting 6 different rolls for a total of $38 for 5 people!!!! That is AMAZING!!! I don't think I've ever had sushi that cheap before without feeling funny afterwards with the number of people we had. Pros: - On days when it is half off on various types of rolls, going with a big group will give you your money's worth! - Not the best sushi you would have ever had, but for the cost, it pays off and fills your tummy. - Large plasmas fill the restaurant Cons: - Very small restaurant with only a few tables (not that big of an issue), they have pretty good seating at the bar. Final Thoughts: So why did I give them only 3 stars? Because I have had better sushi before, but this is the best place to go for your wallet without compromising on quality. read more

This place is bomb! I don't eat that much white rice so you are able to substitute it for brown rice or straight protein style. This accounts for any rolls on their menu! That is a plus bc there are a lot of sushi places that only have 2 or 3 protein rolls on their menu. The resrurant ambiance is pretty cool too. I love this place. I miss this place. I visit this place when I am back. This is some of the best sushi for the money I have ever had. I used to come here all the time when I lived near by, and now every time I am back, I try to make a point to visit Sushiya. The spicy albacore roll is a favorite, and so is the snowball. I have not had a whole lot that is not sushi, so I can't speak to those dishes, other than the seaweed salad that I get quite a bit. I have never had the most amazing service here, and my water glass is frequently empty, but I don't come here for water, I come here for sushi, and for that, they are fantastic. read more

If you are looking for an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant, this is not the place. It IS cheap - $2 for 2 pieces of IKA/squid sushi. They charge $2 for a pot of hot green tea... (C'mon, green tea leaves don't cost that much) That alone tells me it's not authentic. I had lunch special, $7.99. There are a several to choose from. The salad was still very wet and not enough dressing, California roll, 4 pieces, Tempura (1 shrimp, string beans, carrots, zucchini, broccoli - not very traditional. oh, the carrots were still hard...), Rice, Miso Soup (it tasted fine-they must use miso from Japanese market with base/umami, more than a few little cubes of tofu, but could have used a bit more scallion), and Bulgoki (now, that's totally Korean) They do have decent sake, hot and cold, so it'll be a great place to get drunk and munch on the rolls. read more

I have eaten here several times, and food is good, service fine. Yesterday I ate there with my daughter and 15 mins after eating we both got incredibly ill. We had to pull over several times before we got home. My daughter never gets sick like that it had been years, so I know it was not a coincidence. I called the restaurant and a young girl answered, I told her what happened and she gave me the least sincere half hearted apology I have ever heard... "Aw sorry" and hung up. No, let me take of your meal, no let me get my manager, nothing. I work in customer service this was a epic fail on her part. I eat a lot of sushi, and cannot stomach it when it's bad. But this place is actually pretty good! It was strange to see the fish already pre-cut, but the flavor was fine. Prices are cheap and I walked away a happy camper. :) This establishment could do a better job with customer service, but then again, it may just be the language barrier. Overall, go for the food! This sushi chain in SD makes some dull tasting rolls. Nothing in the rolls really excites my taste buds. I can't put my finger on what it is. I love Umai, but I hate that they don't have lunch specials. Lunch is the only time I really consider coming here. Sushiya has these lunch combination bento boxes for about $7 each. Not too shabby for lunch time. You can pick from Chicken Teriyaki, Bulgogi, Kalbi, and Teriyaki salmon, I believe. As for the sushi rolls, I'd opt going elsewhere. They advertise 50% off, but so does Umai across the street. They're approximately in the same price range for sushi rolls so I guess the choice lies in whatever you're in the mood for. read more

This is one of my favorite sushi joints! Delicious, fresh, and inexpensive! Only downfall is they are closed on Sunday's :(.

I don't like the sushi here. It lacked a lot of flavor. I found myself drenching each roll in soy sauce just to get over the taste. Plus, when I ate here, they had a bunch of flies everywhere...
