Rectangular blocks lurking in the forgotten corners of homes and factories, their overweight bodies bulging with violently colored red and green "fruit" and suspect "nuts". In December they start appearing in the mail from coworkers, distant relatives, and loose acquaintances. There is no escape, it is the season of the fruitcake. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, the idea of baking fruit and nuts into batter spread like wildfire. The fruitcake became a high-end delicacy reserved for weddings, holiday gatherings, and other very special occasions. During this time, it also became the lazy man's go-to holiday gift. It was in the mid-20th century that the fruitcake began to fall from grace. Johnny Carson observed live on-air: "The worst gift is a fruitcake. I think it's ok. Not my type of cake, overpriced and overhyped. If you're into American style cake, sweet, dense, thick, without much finesse, it might be for you. But if you're into European or Japanese (more or less like European) style, fluffy, airy, light, elegant, then this is not the place for you. But OK, let's say I do enjoy the taste of the cake, they can definitely put more effort in the presentation. I pay $40+ for a 6" (when some excellent Asian bakeries in LA charge as little as $19), I really expect some decorations, some colors, some design of icing or a piece of chocolate top or some interesting arrangement. NOTHING. Just spread marks of icing with a spatula with words written on top (at least nicely written). It really does look like my grandma made it for me for my birthday. But when I pay $40, I expect professional quality and decorations. Granted, their carrot cake has a lot of ingredients like walnuts, good cinnamon flavor, decent amount of carrot shreds, etc. Disappointed. Not coming back. Not that I won't pay $40 for a cake, but I won't pay $40 for THIS cake. It's sad that San Diego is missing good bakeries especially European style. I've tried some French bakeries here and it's nothing like what I had in France. If you want to know what I'm talking about, go to a Japanese or a true French bakery in LA or NYC and try it out yourself. Or Paris Baguette at H Mart in Mira Mesa has decent stuff too (although still not the best). The young lady that helped us was polite, efficient and helpful. There was a young man working with her. While we were waiting to have our order placed in a bag, the young man took his bandana off, untied it, ran his fingers through his hair, and placed the scarf back on his head. My husband just paid $70 for a carrot cake for my birthday. I was not happy with the flavor as I am not a big RAISIN fan and this cake was loaded with them. This is usually option in recipes as many people do not like them. In addition, the cake was a little dry and upon cutting the first slice it was falling apart upon transfer to the plate and each slice after also fell apart. The frosting was delicious. So incredibly disappointed. Bought a cake for Christmas and not one family member finished their slice. It's flavor was overpowered by peppermint that you couldn't even taste the chocolate cake. We got the 6" lemon cake and I asked the staff which one is the least sweet and she said that they are all pretty sweet...she was definitely not wrong. I picked what I thought would be universally liked but it was definitely too much. The cake was moist and the lemon curd filling was tart but the cream cheese frosting with crunchy sugar coating was waaaaayyy too sweet. $55 for a 6 inch sugar bomb that is not exactly our thing so not sure we'd try their other offerings for future celebrations. I love this cute, little bakery shop! The display cases are gorgeous to look at! I purchased a pie, some sugar cookies, and some assorted cupcakes for work. The seasonal flavor they had, Guinness Stout, was amazing! All of my coworkers loved it - they are fans of alcohol, so it was a great flavor idea. I got everything later in the evening after work and after the gym. I think bakeries tend to have their 'leftover' treats by that time, but SusieCakes still had a good selection to choose from! I spent almost 100$ on my first purchase. It helps that they have a great rewards program - every 100$ you spend, you get 10$ off your next 50$ purchase. Susie Cakes was the BEST choice for our wedding cake! Their ONLY downside is that they won't apply flowers for you, but everything else was superb. We had their tropical cake (coconut and pineapple) with vanilla frosting, vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream filling and vanilla frosting and tropical cake with coconut frosting (that one is the best!!). Our 9" on 12" tier and additional 12" served well over 115 guests with many getting seconds and plenty of leftovers to spare! Their flavor was better than any other bakery we sampled. Many of our guests went back for seconds it was so delicious! Their prices are lower than any other we compared against. Every employee is an absolutely sweetheart to work with! We decided to skip our normal dessert spot and head here for the first time in years. I am fired up over this "Healthy Team" tax. Don't hide this random "tax" from me without offering an opt out on my checkout screen. I only saw the VERY SMALL sign at the register after I had completed my purchase. You are the employer, so get your employees a good benefit plan with the $8/cake slice you are already charging me. Of course they deserve good healthcare, but don't try to trick me into paying for it when it is your responsibility. It's the principle of the sneak attack. You put me in a weird position to ask an employee to refund it, which I won't, plus you are reducing their tips because you know people aren't adding more to a check in addition to the 3% sneak charge. Also, your employees are very nice but they need to put on gloves or wash their hands after touching the register screen then boxing up food. Today she rang me up, touched all my cupcakes, touched the screen again, finished boxing them and gave them to me. Seems obvious that isn't a good idea these days. read more

Came by last night. We got a slice of Red Velvet and Carrot Cake. Both were tasty and moist. The slices weren't huge but not small either. We ate a little and saved the rest for today. Unfortunately, even after packing back in the box they came in and refrigerating...they were dry and hard. Ended up in the trash. If I get it again, it will only be enough for one eating as it doesn't remain moist for a day after cutting. It's a bit over priced as it's a standard cake without the bells and whistles. No interesting flavors or anything to make it stand out. I don't understand the Healthy tax. But they charged additional 25cents to the order. I guess it's something new I'm not aware of. I went to this location on 9/1. I was letting a young take my order, an older lady that works there was looking at what I ordered to get it ready. As the older lady was about to get my order ready I literally saw her put her finger in her mouth and lick off some frosting that was on her finger ( and she was not wearing gloves) when I witnessed what the lady did I was in complete disgust. Aw man, this place has gone SO downhill. We have lived walking distance from this location for about 8 years now and have always recommended it to friends, family, etc. But the constant changes are for the worst. They are hardly ever open anymore and a lot of menu items have become "seasonal" and are rarely available. We always get the whopper pies for my brothers birthday and they were available this year! Just ordered a four pack (for $30) and they are DISGUSTING. This has always been my entire family's favourite item from here but all four are ROCK solid and the kids can't even bite into them. And the vanilla buttercream that's supposed to be in the middle is more like whipped cream for some reason. It's falling out as you try to take a bite and doesn't taste anything like it always has. Susies killed it on this one! My husband recently turned 40, and I wanted to celebrate him with a special cake. He is very particular, and doesn't care for grocery store cakes that are too sweet and overly-manufactured, so I decided to check out SusieCakes near our home. My husband is obsessed with the band Phish, and I had a very specific vision in mind for a cake with the Phish logo, but that spelled out "Phorty" with a "PH" instead of reading "Phish." I had a grainy photograph of what I had in mind, but SusieCakes was so patient with me as I tried to explain my very complicated cake design. Well when I picked up the cake, I could not have been more thrilled. They completely brought my design to life! I ordered white cake with vanilla frosting and it was SO delicious. Communication throughout the entire experience was flawless. They called me the day before to get my approval for two small design changes. They even followed up after the event to make sure we liked the cake. Outstanding customer service all the way around! The price for a custom cake was definitely worth it in my opinion, as the cake tasted amazing and the design turned out even better than I could have imagined.
