I'm pretty into these cupcakes, especially the flourless chocolate one, that thing is a sensual delight most chocolate lovers dare not dream of. Really friendly staff and recommended some good choices on the cupcakes, but seriously that flourless chocolate one is so damn good I can't stop thinking about it. It was moist, chocolatey, dense, yet dainty, just made you want to shove the whole thing in your mouth and ask for another. They're definitely sweet, but I'm cool with that because well, I'm eating a cupcake not a piece of broccoli, so if I didn't want sweet I'd probably have chosen something else. They're just so moist, I don't know how to get that across, the moisture in these cupcakes, they're so moist they're almost wet but not in a weird sort of way. I am in the La Costa area frequently and always drooled over the idea of going inside Susie Cakes. I had heard so much about them and tried a few mini cupcakes at a party last December. This past week, I finally had the time to stop in there not just once but twice! It's very unfortunate that I can't give Susie Cakes a better review, I really wanted to love this place but based on my most recent visit, I don't see myself ever coming back. Ironically enough, I am the Yelp Duchess of this location! I first popped in on a Friday night, literally 5 minutes before they closed (They closed at 8). The ladies that were working were very friendly and didn't rush me at all. I selected the cupcake of the month which was a Strawberry Rose (came highly recommended by the lady working) and then I ordered one of each of the mini cupcakes that were available which were chocolate, vanilla and red velvet. The total came out to over $10 before tip. I was SO excited to get home and try them out! I started with the Strawberry Rose which was very moist. I wasn't blown away, but it was fresh and I did enjoy it. The chocolate mini cupcake was also fresh but to my major disappointment, the vanilla and red velvet were STALE. The next day, I was in the area again with friends. I told them about my experience but it wasn't negative at this point so we all decided to go in. We were looking at the selection and I pointed out which ones I had tried to my friends and then asked the lady behind the counter if they were fresh or the same ones from last night. I was really surprised at the way she responded to me, defensive and dismissive. She proceeded to say that they're all fresh and baked fresh each day. I explained that the reason I am asking is because I was here just the night before and two of my cupcakes were very stale. A couple of the ladies behind the counter exchanged glances and dismissed me. All of my friends looked at each other like "ookkkay, guess they don't like hearing that.." The lady behind the counter disappeared for a minute and then another one came out saying she would help us but had a tone in her voice. There was a man in front of us in line so I asked "I'm not sure if he was helped but he is before us" the man said that someone else was helping him and the lady just walked off. If I was alone, I would have left right then. After a few minutes, we called out to get someone's attention, and another lady came out to help us. This time around, I ordered a slice of Marble Cake. I chose this cake because it was not there the night before which led me to believe that it may have actually be fresh. All the other cakes that were there, were there the night before - so even though they claimed that everything is baked fresh - I know that wasn't true. After everyone made their purchase and we walked outside, I asked if my friends noticed the way they treated us and they all said yes. I wasn't rude to them, I didn't "complain" or ask for anything from them...I just let them know that the cupcakes I purchased the night before were stale. My friends thought at the very least that they should have offered to comp two mini cupcakes in the flavors that were stale. Although that would have been very nice - I wasn't even expecting that. To me, at the very least, they should have acknowledged me and said that they would let someone know. They were dismissive and rude. As far as the Marble Cake - the cake was very moist , almost wet. For me, their cakes are too surgery - so I didn't love it, but the freshness really goes a long way. My 2 star rating is for the following: First and foremost, the service I rec'd on Saturday was poor and alone is enough to make me not want to come back. I felt uncomfortable with the looks they gave, the responses given and the way they all dismissed our group who was patiently waiting to order. Second, the mini cupcakes from Friday were NOT fresh. If the stale product that was sold to me is insisted upon being fresh, then I have to knock a star for quality and consider them to be terrible. Ambiance: Very cute & fun Cost: Pricey for the quality Convenience: Very easy to get to and plenty of parking I think this place would be a hit with young kids. I came here during lunch and not that I'm very much of a cupcake person (although I am a chocolate girl) I opted to cruise here and go for the real deal, a BIG cupcake rather than the mini ones at Luna Grill (which are still delicious). Boy, am I glad I did!! You see, not only was I craving pumpkin everything yesterday I decided to try their pumpkin maple and the frosting was absolutely amazing. The lovely girl that helped me customize the cake, made a very confusing task effortless. The only thing I will say is their custom cakes can be pretty pricey. The cupcakes here are overhyped and pricey. Cupcakes: I tried out two different flavors: red velvet and mocha cupcakes. I didn't like the red velvet flavor. The cake was dry and the icing was way too heavy and sweet. The mocha cupcake was enjoyable. Although the cake was also dry, the frosting was delicious. If you're a coffee lover like me, then you'll definitely enjoy the mocha cupcake. If you're like me and can't handle too many sweets. Then I highly recommend sharing one cupcake with someone else. The service is the best! We arrived around 7:10 and they were closing at 8pm. Two young ladies were giving us advice on how to score a couple of cupcakes for free (install their app) and they were advising us on their rewards system. What a treat to find this bakery. We had been wanting to come here for a long time, and finally made it in this past weekend. They have the best red velvet cupcake I've tasted in a very long time. My general favorite is Sprinkles' red velvet, but I think the SusieCakes version is even more delicious. We also purchased slices of carrot cake and the old fashioned chocolate cake. They were both generous sized slices and very flavorful. My only comment is that I would have wanted more icing in between the layers. I think one of the nicest things about this bakery was that it reminded me of being in the UK. Cake places and tea salons are fairly common in the UK as a neighborhood place where you can enjoy a traditional slice of cake with a cup of tea. Somehow, really good cake places are hard to find in the States. At SusieCakes, it was especially fun to see a multitude of cake slices available under glass domes. If you're looking for "fancy" like an Extraordinary Desserts type of place, then you may consider looking elsewhere. But if you are looking for a slice of Americana (with a bit of an upgrade), then come here. The icing to cake ration being a sweet tasting cake I appreciated that there wasn't to much icing. I wished that they beaten the buttercream a bit longer to take out the texture of the sugar.
