Keep hearing about this but I'm just not over this way often. Today I was, and this was right on the way, so duh. Small parking lot, but 10 spaces or so, plenty at lunchtime on a weekday but probably not at peak. No dine-in currently; call ahead, or order there and wait on one of a couple chairs. I got the Big John, an Italian sub with sausage. Came up in about 10 minutes, because I ordered it hot. Very good sub: good bread (Auddino's apparently,) good sausage, good meats, good veggies. And, a good portion at a good price (I got the 8", for $10.) Best in town? I don't know about that. Up in the top 10 or 5, surely, but we have some pretty good ones. But no complaints, for size, taste, or price. A little greasy, which is not a bad thing (for a sub.) I was stuffed. Friendly service, fast for this kind of thing, reasonably priced, and really good food. If I lived closer I'd be back often. read more

Don't sleep on Susie's! It's a hole in the wall and driving down Karl you might miss it if you're not looking, but dang their sandwiches are good. Firstly, they all come on an Auddino's hard roll. I got the 12" Italian which was topped with Italian deli meats, LTO, hot (salad) pepper rings and their housemade Italian dressing--then slapped on the griddle to warm her up! They have pizza too which i haven't tried. You can call them ahead for quick service when you take out and apparently they deliver too. I'd definitely recomend it as a takeout spot as they have limited seating in their tiny storefront. Lucky for me Susie's is around the corner and apparently they're a big thing. I stumbled across an article on the interwebs listing the best sandwiches in every state amd Susieswas the Ohio pick. My boyfriend and I were driving through so we stopped to eat in. More of a takeout spot, but the dining room was clean and comfortable. Service was very friendly. I had the 8" meatball sub with 4 huge meatballs and my boyfriend had 8" sausage sub, and both were pure toasty, cheesy, saucy perfection. 10/10 would detour again. What a fantastic joint! We have never been here, so we decided to give it a try before our movie. We got their Italian sub and a personal pizza. Both were amazing. The sauce on the pizza was mouth watering good. The Italian was great, but just a little extra Italian dressing in it would have made it better. I'd advise you to ask for extra dressing. Unfortunately, there is no dine in. I asked when it would be back, and they said hopefully soon. It was blocked off, so you'll have to sit outside. You'll find two picnic tables to the left of the entrance. Other than that, I'll definitely be back to try more subs and a bigger pizza. read more

Decided to stop in to Susie's Sub Shop this afternoon. It is located on Karl Road. They have been at this location for 3 years. I decided to order a Philly Cheese Roast Beef sandwich and some Garlic Cheese Bread. The Philly Cheese Roast Beef sandwich which had a good amount of roast beef with onions, green peppers, mushrooms and Swiss cheese, all toasted nicely. The Garlic Cheese bread had a very mild garlic flavor to it with a great layer of cheese with some spices sprinkled over it. It was a lot of food for the money. read more

On our quest to try a new pizza place, we traveled to Susie's. This is a small bare bones store with 3 small tables with 2 chairs each to dine in. They are huge OSU Buckeye fans with pictures and collectibles hanging up and on the counter. They offer cans of pop and bottles of water. Boyfriend and I dined in and ordered their Italian sub special of 2 for $12 and shared a medium pizza. We shared one sub and took the other one home. The bread was crisp and thin, which I like. Plenty of meat and toppings and was really good. I believe one of the meats was a little more spicy than I am used to but I liked it. The pizza we ordered with mushrooms & onions with half pepperoni and sausage. The pizza was ok. I think more seasonings in the sauce would have made the difference. I would not mind stopping back in for subs if in the area or even trying the meatball sub. read more

This is the kind of place you need to go when you're craving a nicely toasted sub. That perfectly crunchy yet soft outer bread is delicious. I got the Philly roast beef. It was exactly what I was looking for! Full of meat and just on the right side of greasy haha. Also, the guy working the counter is really friendly and helpful. Got a 12in Big John sub that was $13 and a personal 10in pepperoni pizza for $8. The sub gets a four star and the pizza a two. The pizza crust was very oily/greasy. The crust is not crackery thin, but maintains a nice buttery crispness on the bottom. The mushrooms are fresh, not canned (bonus points). The toppings were all quality and the pizza had a little kick to it (either the sauce or the peps, I couldn't tell - but it was very nice). We both enjoyed the pizza. While I'm not the biggest edge to edge fan, if you are, then Susie's is worth a stop. You usually don't find great food next to the Family Dollar store, but that's one of the reasons this place is a gem. I came here because of a review I read on the CMH Gourmand blog. It sounded good, I love subs, and when I read they had an Italian sub with Italian sausage, I practically floated over the place the same day. This place is in a run-down part of town, in a run down building. You can tell that something's up when the proprietor asks "How did you hear about us? Who sent you?" I felt welcome, but it must've been obvious I was from a different part of town. The place is old-school, but in a good way. Not much thought or investment in the way of decor; the place seems pretty dedicated to making pizza and subs as it always has. Unlike the squishy soft subs served up by the big chains, this one was a study in contrast, proportions, and premium ingredients. Contrast - bread that is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Lots of contrasting ingredients - spice of sausage, coolness of coleslaw, and so on. Proportions - the right amount of everything; a balanced taste. Not dripping with dressing. Premium ingredients - big slices of meat. Locally procured bread and Italian sausage. Not a place you'll stumble upon by accident...unless you're lost. Still, a pretty convenient location (near I71, close to Clintonville) that is close to any number of other places you might be visiting. read more

The establishment is small and clean with a small dining area. Service was good but very busy. Not real crazy about the postings stating that they are armed. Just went to the new shop on Karl and am happy to report that while the food is the same, delicious fare I've enjoyed for decades, I won't be returning because signs behind the counter are a bit menacing, referencing customers being filmed and workers bearing arms. I finally found another sub place with a great Italian sub in Columbus. When I lived in CT, there were mom and pop Italian restaurants everywhere that had awesome Italian subs. We don't have as much of that here, but we do have Susie's and their Big Jon sub. There's a lot of meat on this sub, and it all tastes so so good. On top of the Italian deli meats, they throw a couple huge Italian sausages on the sandwich, depending on how big you get it. I think I went with the 12", and I was struggling to finish it by the end. I suggest calling ahead, because it takes about 15 minutes for them to bake the sub, and there's not many places to sit. The bread is made by Auddino's, and it's delicious. They also do pizza, and while I didn't get to try it, it smelled pretty amazing in there. It looks like they sell more pizza than subs. The area can be a bit rough (if you're not comfortable with that), but everyone eating there, and the guys working the place were all super friendly. The parking situation is tough, since there's not a whole lot of spots. I ended up parking on the side of the building in my own makeshift spot. I'd definitely check this place out again and would try the pizza out as well. read more

This place is real. So real it might scare you a little. The decor is gruff, full of faded pictures, smoke stains and peeling paint. The service is a bit surly but still very friendly, polite and welcoming. Real people. The neighborhood might be regarded by some as "hood", to me it's home and I've never felt unsafe here. The food is unbelievably real. Fresh, quality ingredients prepared by people who clearly take pride in what they do, and they do it well. All of this is practically given away to you at insanely low price points. A six inch sub here is equivalent to a 12 incher at most chains and runs from $3.75 to $6.50. This is the kind of place where magic happens. If you prefer your food to be made in a joyless, sterile environment go to subway or quiznos and have a mediocre, over priced sub. However if you, like me intend to "keep it real" with real food, made by real folks get yourself to Suzie's. read more

Wow, probably the best meatball sub I've ever had. Nice size balls, a bit larger than a golf ball. Very tasty also. Great sauce and lots of cheese. That 's it. That's all that should be on a fine meatball sub. I got the 12 inch, thinking I wasn't hungry enough for the 16 incher. I was barley able to finish it. The sub was baked just right, great crusty bread and the cheese was melted to perfection. Will be hard to try something else. read more
