Stayed at hotel for 3 days. Ate here 4 times with all our meals tasting great. Only issue I saw was cooks get overwhelmed easily if medium to large parties come in. Then everything gets backed up. Manager helped out which was very nice to see. Waitress only seemed to get lost one time. Waitress at breakfast was very helpful and gave us ideas on things to do on our third day as we did everything we were interested in San Antonio already. read more

My first 5 star rating, but we had a superb experience all around! Elegant atmosphere, attentive service and most of all amazing food. There were so many exciting dishes on the menu, we tried no less than 5 starters from the regular menu and ceviche bar (for just 2 of us). The food shows attention to detail from start to finish, from subtle flavors of the ceviche, the ginger explosion that finished a jicama fizz between courses, amazing skate wing chorizo, and the smooth savory flavors in the lamb. My husband and I were really excited to try this place. It was a disappointment. Ceviche was good. Our main course didn't stand out. Dessert came and was finished before coffee came. My fiancé and I went last night(Saturday), to have a romantic evening and enjoyable dinner. I called ahead to let them know I wanted it to be special and to bring out a certain desert with a champagne toast. Not only did we get very intimate table, they put rose petals all over they table! Our waitress Nancy was excellent and knowledgable to the food. Ceviche taste of 3 was so so but the entrees were incredible. We ordered the fresh catch and beef tenderloin. Here is my assessment after staying st the Eilan for about 22 days over a 7 week period. After dining at Sustenio multiple times for breakfast and dinner, I will not be doing it again. For breakfast, there is no buffet, so it takes over an hour to get in and out - an unacceptable way to start a business day. The menu is overwrought with southwestern style. If pared down to an order of eggs and bacon, the cost is more than $28 with coffee and juice - and the coffee is invariably mud-like. My employer has no qualms about paying that - I do. Especially for slow service and many flaws. Dinner is, again, over done - literally. Tonight I had a grilled chicken breast so dry that it was hard to swallow, and quite small. The only real flavor was the overly charred flavor of the grill. I ate it because I was hungry and didn't want to spend the time to have it replaced. On previous occasions other dishes were boring because everything tastes somewhat the same. If the chef wants to have a destination restaurant, he should not do it in a hotel where there is no variety available for long term or regular guests. Having said all that, the hotel itself is lovely and I will continue to stay here. However, the other restaurants in the area will get my dining dollars. read more

Very disappointed on how we were treated. Had reservations for 6 for Fathers Day Brunch. Never had been here before and read in the paper about their Father's Day brunch with cigars and raffle. At first server was attentive and wished my husband and other dad at our table happy Father's Day. He brought the cigars and drinks. Food was excellent. Omelette station plus meats and sorts. We felt rushed and our bill was given to us and we were still ordering drinks. We were never given a raffle ticket as we found out when we were leaving that we should have received it. Spoke to female manager and all she could say was that she was sorry. Convenient restaurant as it is located inside the Eilan Hotel. We ordered the shrimp and pimento cheese appetizers. The shrimp was nothing special. Just shrimp with avocado chunks and some kind of white cheese along with Rice Krispie treat blobs. Weird combo. The pimento cheese was served with brick-hard pork rinds. Yuck! We had to ask for crackers just to finish the pimento cheese. Our entree was delicious. We got the scallops with Brussels sprouts and some kind of sauce but it was great. I have had the joy of attending their breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner services and all I can say is wow. The breakfast is delishious every time. The bacon and sausage is aaaaamazing! I wish the breakfast service had a little more people on staff but the food makes up for it and the prices are super reasonable for the quality. The brunch is second to none. There is so many amazing food choices and sides and drinks. The lunch menu has salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, tacos, pizza, entrees, oh my!! And the dinner. The most delectable food I have had in San Antonio. I was with a large group of 12 people. The service was impeccable. I was very impressed with the waiters knowledge of the menu and the wine list. But the food was the star of the evening. For appetizers we got ceviche which was phenomenal. My entree was seared scallops. The portion was quite large and the scallops were the best I have had at a restaurant ever. Overall we all had a pleasurable dining experience. I plan on going back soon! read more

I don't usually write reviews but our experience last night at Sustenio for restaurant week was pretty bad. We have been to this restaurant many times since they opened and we have had some very memorable meals mostly in the beginning. I will say that consistency seems to be a problem for them I will start with the food then move on to the rude server. We were 5 and 4 of us ordered from the restaurant week menu. My son who ordered off the regular menu was the only one satisfied with his meal. We all had the Caesar salad which I have had there before and this was not the same Caesar basically what we got was a stalk of romaine exactly how it comes out of the bag at HEB with a drizzle of a bland dressing barely resembling Caesar and some bread crumbs yes bread crumbs Once you got through the top layer of lettuce you were left with just lettuce no dressing just lettuce. We asked for more dressing and they brought 2 small pitchers and we finished our lettuce My husband had the short ribs he didn't complain I didn't taste them so I can't say. The rest of us had the halibut which was completely overlooked and inedible We told the server he offered to have them remake but we were not willing to wait another 30 minutes while 2 people in our party were already eating. Fish stayed on the plate and we ate the veggies and grits which were tasty Dessert bread pudding. By far not the best I've had but also not the worst just bread pudding. I would expect more from a restaurant like Sustenio Now for the service. We started out ok ordered a bottle of red I had a glass of white which was very good Had our lettuce and then sat and waited after about 30 minutes we asked the server about our main courses and he actually said this "i don't know I'm not the chef" He went to check and came back immediately with our plates which leads me to believe they were sitting under the hot lights for awhile and maybe that was the cause of the over cooked fish. He offered to have the chef come out and talk to us about the fish but she didn't actually come out until we were eating our dessert He also offered me a second glass of wine and then never brought it until I asked for it 30 minutes later They did take the fish off the bill I'm not sure how they worked it out with the restaurant week pricing bc I didn't see the bill. Sustenio..Worst experience in a fine dinning restaurant ever! First off it was my birthday celebration and we reserved a table for 10 people because a friend really recommended this place. They kept calling me to confirm my party of 10 because "the restaurant was going to be full (saturday night)". I was so worried that me and my husband decided to get there before time just to be sure they did not take our reservation from us. (The restaurant was not even half full). To make the story short, this were some of my observations: 1. Rude Staff 2. Careless Manager 3. Cheap Decor for an upscale restaurant 4. Food: We did not even get to try it because when we were finally seated they told us they had a Prix-Fix menu from the day before (Valentines). We did not go there for the left overs! They did not care to tell me this the 5+ times they called me to confirm. 5. Ambiance: No ambiance.... I don't even believe I want to give this place a second chance. read more

Came here for restaurant week (my favorite week of the year!) and was disappointed in the offerings at Sustenio. The 16 hour spud-vide short rib was extremely tough and it not recommended; the waiter volunteered that other patrons have provided the same feedback. The oyster appetizer was good. The crispy sweetbreads had good flavor but was not recommended. Service was professional but food arrival slow (over 20 minutes for first course). Hostess was cheery and welcoming. Overall, this gets a "meh" rating with a strong warning to steer clear of the toughest short rib in town. read more

it a'ight. it's pretty..a nice modern, lounge-y space at the bottom of the Eilan hotel. there's a patio out in the quaint manufactured town of it all. they offer wine flights: get 3 half-ish pours of their by-the-glass selections for $12. it worked on us: we found a bottle to enjoy on the patio after dinner. the food is...kinda meh. i was there on a random Wednesday night, so maybe A-game wasn't bein' brought-en. my friend liked her swordfish entree, but i couldn't decide, so i opted for 3 tacos: 72-hour brisket (tender, but mostly peppery), pork belly (cubed; pretty dry and mostly flavorless), and oyster (fried, with slaw. oysters pretty gulf-y tastin'). the tortillas are, of course, packaged. it was food. and i think it was $3 a taco, so i wasn't robbed blind, but... based on that, I'd probably stick to appetizers and wine (and/or delicious-sounding cocktails) should i return. which i might, because it's a nice space to be IN, enjoying company. use the valet..the parking for the hotel seems like it was maybe architecturally innovative, but underwhelmingly executed like the food. read more

Wow, we must have hit Sustenio on an off day - so many others gave it 5 stars. It's a beautiful new restaurant and the complimentary valet parking is a nice touch. The service was attentive but not well-informed. The chopped salad had ONE piece of turkey and maybe 1 teaspoon of dressing. When I asked for more dressing the waiter looked bewildered. What kind of dressing did I want? Oh, he wasn't sure what they had for dressing? My friend's chicken wasn't cooked through and it actually looked pretty unappetizing - no color on the skin, just pale, boring chicken. The side of hominy was different and pretty tasty. Lots of water and tea refills without asking - that was nice, but way too many interruptions instead of just refilling. I would go back in the evening to see if it's better than lunch, but I think they need more time to sort it all out. read more

Was just there for Easter Brunch at about 45 per person- drinks not included. Altogether very good. I'm never very impressed with Brunch. Here its served family style with choices of 2 appetizers-2 entrees- 3 sides. and one dessert. We choose a salad-pancakes-a beef pot pie-ham-etc. The ham was good but dry- the beef-excellent- the other things were fine. For the price- (2 children at a much reduced price) it was wonderful. Not worth a second visit! Way too many kinks to work out! I have had so much better at Kirby's, Flemings, etc. The pork belly was cold, the Caesar salad croutons where doughy and parmesan crisp was thick, cold and disgusting! I will not go back, definetely not worth it! I would rather cook a delicious meal at home for a fraction of the cost! Even the bar was 5th class, they gave my husband a beer in a bottle with the foil all over the top. We had to ask for a glass..the flat bread had cheap queso on it..disgusting! A hidden gem at the Eilan Hotel. Free Valet service. Unique southwestern fare. Attentive, friendly and engaging service. Awesome atmosphere. Went with a small group of four, all the food was great, even the steaks, though I will say that the steaks had nothing that set them apart from other great steak places. On par with Kirby's for steak quality, better than Ounce or Bob's all the way round. Place gets a bad rap for being too expensive. We had drinks, appetizers, and entrees and all in was about $210 so really not too bad. read more

Wow. My fiancé and I had dinner at Sustenio last night and what an experience it was! Exceptional service, relaxing atmosphere and sensational food! Starting off with their signature cocktail's (Pina Diablo and Berry Bash) set the tone for an array of mouthwatering delights. Apps: A trio of ceviche- Sea Bass, Honduran Tuna and Lobster, Tamale Tart and Scallops. Mains: Venison and Beef Tenderloin. Dessert: Beignets and Espresso Crème Brûlée. We were led down a path of indulgence by our server Trevor as he provided excellent descriptions and recommendations from the menu. Convincing my fiancé to try a dessert is a huge feat! The general manager Philippe was consistently visiting with each party. His visits to our table were met with refreshing conversation. He paired our meal with the perfect zinfandel and even gave us some suggestions for our honeymoon! Our overall experience was brilliant. My fav's include the Sea Bass ceviche, Tamale Tart, Venison and the Beignets. So glad we tried this place out and look forward to experiencing their happy hour! read more

one of the gems in san antonio that most people have not really heard about. big fan of the farm to market concept and seasonal changing menu (one of the few places in san antonio that does this). i have eaten already 5 times and love every time i go. the menu has great food options and the desserts are exceptional. the ratings of 3 stars on this place from previous people i do not agree with unfortunately (but everyone has their own opinion and expectations). the service is superb and i think this is one of the best high-end restaurants in san antonio (much better than places like ruth chris even though its a different style of food). already planning several more trips here. they need to keep up the good work. read more

Arrived to the table with one menu short and had to request the wine list. The service wasn't really polished and in a way was inattentive. I found myself having to get up and grab the water bottle to refill. As for the wine, the markups were a bit ridiculous. Seriously, a $40 bottle of champagne retail for $120? The ceviche was quite fresh, but didn't really do it for me. Regarding the main course, three of the six of us ordered the same dish only for one to come out incomplete. I've seen the dinning experience get progressively worse. For a "luxury" experience they over promise and way under deliver and with the poor leadership in place. I honestly don't see it getting any better any time soon. Dishes are over priced and under portioned and are not executed with any consistency, It makes me wonder where is the leadership in the kitchen. 36 min to get a soup last time I was in there. Staff is not knowledgeable about the food or beverages, although they are friendly. Linen is faded, and not pressed, they are constantly out some item, The printed menus don't reflect what they actually have. There isn't never ANY manager presence so giving any feedback would be futile. You are basically paying to walk into a nice building because all other expectation of a dinning experience in a "luxury" hotel fall way short unfortunately... The dinner menu here is phenomenal and the staff is incredible. Adonys was our server and had a complete understanding of the menu and was able to suggest wines that paired nicely. The only reason it's not five stars is the appetizer selection didn't seem on par with that of competitor restaurants (IE. Bliss, Silo, etc). It was restaurant week and my team (11 people) from work went and had the prix fixe meal. The food was very good and well presented and the atmosphere was very nice. I'm giving this only 3 stars due however to the surprise $38 surcharge at the end of the meal!!! This was applied because we sat in a semi-private area of the dining room. Note that we did not ask to be seated there, THEY chose it for us. A surcharge was not mentioned when either our reservation was made or when we arrived. We were told that the hostess should have told us when we made our reservation and they would make sure that everyone is reminded of the rule. Very disappointed. read more

I took my wife here for her birthday and it was the best meal we have had in San Antonio. The food was exquisite with so many wonderful flavors and the service was great!
