Great Honky Toni for live music and drinks with friends. Great for groups. Food is decent, lots of parking and plenty of tables. Bathrooms are clean. Only complaint is they have very few busters and only 1.2 bartenders so cleaning up is lacking. We had a party and had to basically gather our trash to the side to enjoy the space after eating as well as we had several buckets of beers and the empties sat on our table close to midnight and we were there since 7 pm. I was really hunger for a nice chicken fried steak. The mashed potatoes and gravy were good, so were the green beans. The roll is very small, not even heated or toasted. The steak was very disappointing. It looked great: golden and crunchy, just what one wants. However, the steak was unseasoned and very overcooked. It was actually crispy! How do you cook the beef so long it's crispy inside the breading? The peach cobbler and ice cream were nice. Would have liked a real spoon to eat it though. I was lucky enough to stop for dinner on their first day that they had karaoke. It was so much fun. They had great music going and people were out there singing. I didn't realize I was going to get free entertainment. We bought a few items. We had the brisket and sausage with a side of green beans and cream corn. We also had the catfish platter with a side of onion rings and an order a personal size fried pickles. Everything was very good. My friend didn't really appreciate the cream corn, but everyone has different taste. My catfish was battered perfectly. The onion rings were just ok. The batter was super thin, so it flaked off easily. Prices were reasonable. This is a typical barbecue place where you order at the counter and pick up at the other counter when your buzzer goes off. I saw a lot of people eating their baked potatoes, so next time I plan to get one. They do have a station with onions, lemons, and pickles. They do have barbecue sauce, but it comes with your plate and it is not readily available in their condiment section. The restaurant is very big and they have different sections. They have a full service bar with very good specials. Parking is available on site and there's plenty of it. Don't pass up this place. Give them a chance. You won't regret it read more

My husband and I stopped to have lunch and try this new place out. I ordered the chicken fried steak with cream corn and fried okra. For dessert the bread pudding. My husband ordered the 3 meat plate with brisket, chicken and pulled pork and his sides were cole slaw and potato salad. His dessert was key lime pie. Everything was delicious and flavorful. The service was great and lots of smiling faces. Now to the ambiance... it's a country bar that makes you want to put on your cowboy boots and start dancing. My wife and I have been excited to try this place out since it reopened. Today, on our return from New Braunfels, we pulled in. I have some mixed feelings about it, which I will explain. First of all, the place looks nice. You can see that in my photos. It was fairly busy with families and small children today. We were surprised by that. I mean... Why aren't these people at work? Why aren't these kids in school? I would have liked to have skipped the family crowd and headed to the back room, but I wasn't sure if that was allowed. Instead, we went to the very back near the bar. Both of us ordered unsweet tea. They had two huge dispensers. The sweet tea one had a sign on it that claimed it was zero calorie. I fell for it and assumed it was sweetened with a sugar substitute. When I tasted it, I convinced myself that it tasted like it was aspartame. So, I filled my glass and headed to the table. Later I asked the lady who had taken my order. She told me they did use sugar, and the sign was misleading. Well, my diabetes is not so severe that one glass of sweet tea will hurt me. But, I worry about other diabetics for whom it could be harmful. I decided to try the chicken fried steak. It would be so nice to find a place with a great one that's close to my house. Unfortunately, this is not it. Everything tasted delicious. But, when I tried to cut a bite, all of the coating came off of the meat like a glove. That is a big negative in my book. In fact, it would have cost them a second star had the flavor not been so good. The gravy was good. It could have been a tiny bit thicker, but I was good. The mashed potatoes were very good. They had a few lumps in them, which is something I really like. The fried okra ticked all of the boxes. It was perfect. My wife ordered the brisket sandwich. When it came out, the pieces of brisket were hanging about two or three inches off the sides of the bun. She realized that she could have cut it herself, but wondered why they didn't try to make it fit the bun in the kitchen. She liked the flavor, although there were some stringy and fatty. She really enjoyed the french fries. You order on your way to your seat and get your own drinks. They do not even have a tip line when you pay for your food. That is a plus. I wish other self-service restaurants would follow suit. I really didn't look at the bar. It takes up most of one wall and seems pretty well stocked. My wife went over and looked at the happy hour sign and liked what she saw as far as prices. We couldn't tell if they had any specialty cocktails, and I forgot to see if they had any non-alcoholic offerings. All in all, I expect this restaurant to be one of our regular haunts from now on. I need to eat some other menu choices before I am willing to pass on it. As I said, the food tasted great. I am just a very picky guy when it comes to chicken fried steak. read more

I finally got around to trying the new Texas Star Inn as I was a regular at the Old Grady's location. As a bonus, I used a BOGO coupon for a chopped brisket or pulled pork sandwich...winning. So, if you were an old customer of Grady's you will notice the changes they have made inside by reconfiguring the seating and adding a bar and dance floor. It looks really nice and has plenty of open space. I decided to order one chopped brisket and one pulled pork sandwich so I could compare and contrast with pint of potato salad and pinto beans. I got my order to go, and the order was correct when I got home. The meat in both sandwiches was seasoned well and quite tasty. The buns were toasted and the bbq sauce was pretty good and not to vinegary. I forgot to grab some onions, pickles or jalapeños from the little self-serve area. The potato salad is a mustard based with some mayonnaise I believe. Very solid. The pinto beans were cooked well and had plenty of bacon but could have used a little more salt and garlic or seasoning to give them a punch. As mentioned before, I used a BOGO coupon so my check for one sandwich, one pint of potato salad, and one pint of pinto beans came out to $33. A little on the pricey side but such are the times. Overall, I liked the new Texas Star Inn and will come back to try more of the menu and their happy hour specials. read more

It was Black Friday and I wanted chicken fried steak and drove out to Helotes to eat at 6 Klicks but they were closed so I called Texas Star Inn to inquire about the hours only to have some girl answer and pretend to hear that she didn't hear me and rudely hung up on me. I called again only to get a voicemail. So I gave up and drove here only to miss the entrance, pull into the next business a Caliber Collision, drove out back to Bandera to the light and pull into the driveway of another place to get back on the other lane of Bandera and attempt a U turn minutes away just to get here. I ordered at the counter and some Hispanic girl who wasn't very friendly wait on me. I ordered a chicken fried steak with onion rings, green beans and a sweet tea and was given a buzzer and a cup. It was huge and had a lot of room inside and doubles as a live music venue for a lot of unknown country music artists and bands. And that's all the radio played was country music like Morgan Wallen and Cody Johnson. Keep in mind that this used to be a Grady's BBQ a few years ago but they recently went out of business. It's too bad their sweet tea here tasted nowhere as sweet or good as Grady's because it sucked. If the tea was the only disappointment then I was in for a big surprise. My buzzer rang and I got my order. I took a bite of the green beans which were kinda mushy and reminded me of the kind served at Bill Miller's, not good. Their roll reminded me of a King's Hawaiian roll which can be found easily at a Walmart or HEB. The onion rings were decent and the batter didn't fall off as I bit into them. Now the CFS was a major letdown. Batter peeled off when I was cutting into it but the steak was good and didn't have any fat or gristle. I ordered a slice of German chocolate cake for dessert to go and left it overnight in the fridge for the next day and it was good and it was a huge slice. Beer had floaters in it. Nice building but the AC was not on in the back room. No one came to check on us and upon leaving the manager was engrossed in conversation. The creamed corn was good as was the chicken tenders, they were moist and not dry. The chicken fried steak was good without too much crust but the crust did easily fall off. The sides were really good. The bad... brisket was a bit dry and jalapeño sausage felt like it sat too long in the warmer, IYKYK and my fries were not hot. We had an initial experience in restaurant that was good. Unfortunately followed up by a not goof takeout experience. Picked up two pints of Mac and cheese, one of the pints had a piece of cardboard for rubber gloves in bed in the cup. Called to let the manager know, placed on hold for ten minutes, basically never came back to phone. Then only voicemail answers when calling back. Was not mad at first just trying to let them know what occurred, but after this great attempt to ignore the customer may need to reevaluate the restaurant. I don't mind paying $16 for two pints of great Mac and cheese, but cardboard and crappy response from management are not acceptable. read more

Extremely Disappointed - Poor Service and No Accountability We had a very frustrating experience during our visit. We placed our order at 6:57 p.m. and waited patiently. By 7:40 p.m., we inquired about the delay and were told there were a lot of orders. That's understandable--but what followed was not. We waited until 8:07 p.m. with still no sign of our food. Our pager never buzzed, even though we were number 23. A server came out and called number 24, then continued to serve multiple other orders while we were still left waiting. It was confusing and frustrating. We followed up again at 8:15 p.m. and were finally told our order had been given to someone else. There was no apology or acknowledgment of the mistake. If your servers are personally delivering orders, they need to pay closer attention to the numbers and ensure they're handing meals to the correct customers. What is your process for verifying that orders are completed properly? How do you make sure none are missed? This was our first visit since the restaurant changed ownership, and sadly, it will also be our last. We cannot recommend this place to friends or family based on this experience. read more

Came to just over $20. Details. Specifically asked for the gravy on the side. Got both gravy on the side and all over the country fried steak which added to the whole soggy mess aspect. The country Fried steak was bland and the entire breading came off. I'm unsure how the meat was both soggy and dry at the same time. I mean it was edible but really should have just gotten a meal simple thing at HEB and put it in the oven. The sides weren't any better. The green beans had a decidedly aluminum can taste and the potato salad went straight into the trash after a single bite. It was also very soggy. Mushrooms. So I don't know how their breading was both hard and gummy at the same time. There might have been a little bit flavor there, but the texture was just awful. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because the place was clean. There was definitely a honky-tonk feel. But the vibe was more bar than restaurant. Maybe that's why the food sucked. Came today for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. Walked into the restaurant and smelled smoke, so that was a good start. We ordered the chicken fried chicken sandwich and the brisket and sausage sandwich. Three combos for $56. The prices were reasonable and portions were very good. The jalapeno cheddar sausage was good but not spicy and that brisket was flavorful and ample. Got the onion rings which were made in house and was very good. These guys really have a gem of a building, it feels like a throwback to times that have long passed by & exudes charm. Sadly, they need some work on the food. There are two paths you can go down when your food is just, "average". First path, is to set your prices and portions accordingly. If you are gonna charge $40 for a two meat plate (2 plates) for 2 people both drinking ice tea, you better serve up a massive serving for average tasting food. Second path, you lower your price to match the small portions and quality of food. It's one or the other, if you do not address this you will be selling your building in 12 months assuming you need the food revenues to stay in the black. The food itself. The cream corn is absolutely stellar, the brisket is "good", the green beans, pinto beans, side salad all average. The portions were dismal at the price point, the chicken was super dry and should have been thrown away, the pulled pork is way too greasy but then again, I have yet to have great pulled pork anywhere in TX as they simply don't know how to serve it correctly or prepare it like the East coast does. The sweet tea I had was not sweet so I went looking for some sugar and couldn't find any. I went to the order counter and the girl gave me 4 packets of sugar. Overall out of a 10 I give the food a 4. Chicken fried steak was small and thin, after cutting it I noticed it was a lot smaller than it looked. Did not have any flavor nor did the mashed potatoes. The onion rings were thin and not tasteful at all. The place was clean, floor is very uneven in a lot of places so be careful. Again for the price is not really worth it.
