When I received this recommendation, I was skeptical of this brunch spot due to the buffet style. I'm not a huge buffet guy and prefer a traditional setting. I was delighted to see to see there was an array of options from the traditional eggs, sausage, and pancakes to oysters on the half shell, shrimp, and omelettes made to order. Also, you can never beat bottomless mimosas for $10 dollars! While the food exceeded my expectations, the service was lacking. Our waitress could rarely be found which was a problem when it came to refills on our drinks. We would only be able to find her every 15 to 20 minutes on top of the 10 minutes it would take for a refill. The mimosas were also very inconsistent so you never knew if they were going to be heavy on the orange juice or heavy on the champagne. If you have time to sit around and aren't looking for a mimosas fix, check it out. The food was good and atmosphere is there. If you're looking for a boozie brunch look elsewhere. read more

Sustenio Culinaria Sunday Brunch 1/27/19: I had a reservation requesting a booth or table with a view & even though we checked in 8 minutes before our reservation time we got seated smack dab in the aisle in a main pathway when I saw tables with booths that were available away from the heavy traffic area near the kitchen. Service: Our "server" Tracy in my opinion seemed slow and new? When we were seated we asked what was offered for drinks when she said the Culinaria brunch included 1 drink & she said "I could get you anything." When we asked what do you have? She couldn't even tell us, she told us to just tell her what we wanted. Okay... We expected a suggestion ie, coffee, tea, iced tea, soft drinks, juice, etc. I thought that was weird. In last year's Culinaria Brunch, upon check-in we had a slight wait and was offered Mimosas. During our meal we were offered coffee or tea afterwards?? This visit was a bit disappointing. Tracy was too slow, not very attentive as my husband had to get his own utensils several times from a side table after finishing a plate of food that he'd set aside to be bussed; In fact, I even had to ask for iced tea refills several times. At one point, a woman wearing purple with glasses who was the front of restaurant manager(?) asked how everything was & I said "Delicious!" but that was before the lack of iced-tea refills & utensils being replenished episodes. Towards the end of our meal I finally asked Tracy for 2 glasses so I wouldn't have to continually ask & she replied that she had to "brew more". At times, I was looking for her and figured since our table was in a "central location" either she or another waiter would automatically replenish it? Silly of me to expect that from what I thought the high-end Eilan would produce?? With puzzled faces we could only surmise that she was new. Other busboys were hustling & bussing tables esp. a short Asian male & taller Caucasian busboy/waiter. I mean...Perry's Steakhouse has better, more attentive service! And that's the norm! Food plusses: Standard bacon/scrambled eggs/sausage/pancakes/potatoes stations; Pastries, fresh fruit(raspberries; blueberries; blackberries) & yogurt; mini desserts; Prime rib/Made-to-Order omelet station; Prawns/Oysters with condiments area; Charcuterie with cheese/mini figs/dried apricots; Bagels & lox; Arugula Salad with walnuts, dried fruits & fresh asparagus; Food misses: They ran out of oysters at about 12:20pm so asked & they said they were getting more out. I also had to ask Tracy for tongs for the charcuterie stand. There was only a soft cheese server with smashed cheese. She put some out a few minutes later as I waited for my omelet to be cooked. Why wasn't there a front of house person always checking to see what's missing or actively replenishing unless you asked? The omelet was yummy BTW! The chef did a good job! Upon finishing our meal, Tracy offered to give 2 drinks to go which was our iced teas. She gave our bill & apologized for not seating us in a booth. I'm on the fence as to if I would come again? We finally got to check this place out and it didn't disappoint. First off, I would like to thanks Jada up front who helped us move our reservation time up, she was extremely helpful. Our waitress, Tracy, was very attentive throughout our entire meal. We came for their Sunday brunch during restaurant week and it's totally worth it. There was a cold seafood bar consisted of shrimp, oysters, and smoked salmon. They have the typical hot breakfast foods, a variety of salad options, a charcuterie section, omelet bar, prime roast beef, and a wide selection of fruit and desserts. This was absolutely a place that we went with high hopes which were dashed to the ground with very little hope of resurrection. I had only had a drink at the bar and an app (the ever present hummus or something like that) and that was not exactly great either, but hey it is a place that Stephen Pyles has lent his name to (this man really moved Southwestern cuisine into the epicurious realm way before Flay did...who can forget that ridiculously good tamale pie that at Star Canyon that I saved money for months as a grad student to that dish and eat there again)...so off we went for a visit to the farmers market and brunch. A beautiful space greeted us when we walked into the restaurant, but not much else. The hostess was missing and showed up after a good 8-10 minute wait and asked us "how can I help you" really? Its a restaurant, what do you think we are there for? Buying suits? Getting a cellphone plan? ..but I was in a much gentler mood because of the spousal influence and we were seated at a table that was right up to a column and could have seated at least 6 people comfortably. So no stars at this point... Food wise there was nothing really that stood out as inventive on the menu so we ordered the fatoush salad, the 12$ burrito, the whole wheat flapjacks that came recommended and a glass of vino (someone else had said they were horrified at the markups by the glass..but they are no worse than Max's wine dive or the Boiler House..and they have better pours). The food was brought out in rapid succession and we dug in. The burrito was a 12$ disaster and filled with unseasoned eggs, largish chunks of still crunchy onion and maybe bell peppers and cheese in a tortilla that had not really been warmed up enough, thus rendering it soggy. The whole wheat flapjacks were good, but nothing to write home about..and also not served with real maple syrup! Coffee was terrible..and made this coffee lover stick to the first cup. But on to the best part of the meal, the Fatoush! This was almost jewel like in its looks with lightly dressed baby arugula dotted with tiny tomatoes that almost added a sparkle to the place, couple that with cucumbers, roasted bell peppers all perfectly cooked and diced...I mean each of the vegetables were about the same size which really made for a nice composition on the plate and mouth! I wish they had put more of the pita pieces in there, after all this was a dish made to use up old pitas (big controversy over whether this came first or panzanella BTW). The salad of all the things said a lot more of the potential than anything else (admittedly it was just a burrito...but if you think a pancake is a pancake is a pancake...try the ones at Smoke, or the french place in Seattle and you will see what I mean). Service was functional but spotty. It's a pity that a space that is so beautiful is not run very well. I am convinced this is a management and training problem in some sense. This is a dinner review. We were greeted promptly at the front where the lady "checked us in." They must only serve people who are staying in the hotel? Our server was Nancy, a polite yet awkward older waitress. She knows her stuff when it comes to the menu, but she lacks the basic waitressing skills like refilling your glass. I drink a lot of water and only had one glass. Had we not asked, I wouldn't have gotten a refill. She had this air about her that communicated arrogance at first but by the end of the night, she let that facade go. Going off of her greeting this morning, I'm sure she loved our tip... The food was delicious!!! The chicken was moist, the risotto was creamy, the steak was juicy and crispy and the salad was so good with the warm and soft croutons. read more

I try to consider when my expectations are too high, and maybe that's what has happened to my Sustenio visits, but man, I'm just totally underwhelmed by this place. I was hearing whispers of the rumors of Sustenio for a long time. World class chef running a kitchen serving a 100% local, sustainable menu of gourmet foods in a 5-star environment. Sounds pretty good right? It's only good to market yourself as such if you can deliver. I do love the atmosphere. I had some trouble finding the restaurant. As others have noted, this entire complex is a bit confusing, but once I found it I loved what I saw. So simple, so elegant, so pretty inside. But then interaction one was so exceedingly rude that I was immediately knocked down from my excitement. But, I'll get to that in a minute. I have had a couple experiences here so far and frankly each is worse than the last. First, the drinks are exceptionally overpriced. This isn't Manhattan, this is San Antonio, and $18 for a glass of low-quality wine is not acceptable to me. And I only sampled cocktails from others with me but I just wasn't totally impressed for the prices. At all. Now, the prices on food were very good. So, that also threw me. Why have such great prices on the dinner menu and so obscenely overpriced drinks? I was beyond excited to taste Chef Pyles' Caesar salad. Perhaps again, my expectations destroyed my results. It just was bland. I mean, the thing had no flavor. It was described by one of the waiters as "famous" and I can't imagine how a dish without flavor became famous. It is my assumption that no one was monitoring the kitchen and they were just churning out food with little quality control. Now, I also had the red snapper on my last visit and can say if you decide to venture out here, this is the dish to get! Oh my is it good! I would eat it every single time I go back... But, I don't know that I'll honestly go back because the service. Wow. The service is just plain, old bad. Rude from the start, and not attentive, I wasn't sure if the waiter just didn't like us, his job, or just life in general but I didn't even want to leave him a tip by the time it was over. Now, to be fair, they just opened and it can be difficult at best in the first few weeks, but they've been open since March and it's now June and I just hoped to see some major attitude adjustments on the waitstaff. That's why I waited and returned before posting my review. But, alas, it was just the same as the last time. So, there it is. I want to love this place, I want it to succeed but right now they need to work on quality control with food and staff and hopefully get it together and keep a sustainable option open in this part of town! read more

Had lunch here yesterday with some girlfriends and wouldn't go back. Although the chicken had been sous vide, flash fried and oven cooked, the 2 ladies that ordered it weren't comfortable eating pink chicken. Their replacement meal took so long, we were all done eating by the time they were served. The tortilla soup smelled delicious, but was a little bland tasting. My sister and I each ordered the turkey sandwich. The 2 sandwiches weren't cooked the same, so there's a quality control issue here. My bread was burned, as in burned black. My sister's wasn't burned and looked better. I had to pay $2 extra to sub a tiny Caesar salad for fries. I should have stuck with the fries because it was a bigger portion than the salad and they were pretty good. They were cooked well... not under cooked or over cooked. Nothing in my Caesar salad was worth paying $2 more. And the croutons were weird. They were soft and doughy like undercooked hush puppies. My cousin ordered the salmon and thought it was very good. My meal was two glasses of Chardonnay and a crappy turkey sandwich for $50. The waiter was nice though. read more

This hidden gem North of San Antonio off I-10 was truly a great dining experience. We loved it so much dining on a Friday night that we came back Saturday night. I had the chicken fried steak. The steak was tender and the onion/mushroom gravy was the best! My wife had the salmon and it was cooked perfectly with fresh sides. When you are there, do not pass on the desserts. We could not give enough praise about the creme brulee and the tres leches cake! The manager Nancy Hinojosa checked on us several times and our server Victoria was a delite. It really wasn't Sustenio, but rather one of the hotel ballrooms converted for the big Mother's Day brunch. $52 that included free valet parking. Entree selections of omelets, prime rib, pork roast, salmon, egg casserole, biscuits with sausage gravy, bacon, sausage links, veggies and more. Plenty of cold seafood: shrimp, oysters, crab, sushi rolls. The beauty was that the shell fish were already shelled for you. Awesome. The oysters sat in their shell, already detached. The shrimp came easily right out of the tail. Crab ready to just eat. Dessert: miniature peach cobbler, creme brûlée, various breads, coffee cake, red velvet and carrot cupcakes, other pastries, bowls of whipped cream to top anything and everything. A combo played music while you ate, big band and more modern tunes. They were pretty good. 'Mirage' I think is their name. I bet the valets will lose 10 pounds today, running for cars as they are and so humid today. Tip them well. Service for off to a slow start as we went acknowledged for a while after being seated. The husband gets irritated so easy. He was OK once he started eating. Ha, ha. I thought the brunch was pretty good. Not something I'd do routinely, but definitely for a special occasion. Excellent restaurant for Sunday brunch. We've eaten there twice now, one for Easter and just today. Each time was fantastic. They probably could have just a tad more options for the kids, but that's being really picky. For the price, it's fantastic! What great service and food, not to mention that it's very nice inside. Highly recommended. I can't speak for the restaurant in terms of traditional seating as we have only been there for brunch. Yet, both times were spectacular. Extremely friendly and helpful staff and the food was outstanding both times. I was a bit curious how well the brunch would be on a day that was not a holiday; sometimes restaurants only hit it out of the park during special occasions. Happy to report that they did not disappoint on a regular Sunday. Thanks to the great staff and the food was amazing. I asked for two slices of the prime rib since the slices are usually very thin when served at a buffet, but both on Easter and today, a regular Sunday, they sliced it very thick. Didn't need to ask for two, but gladly ate both! I ordered an omelet and mented to the gentleman that I'd be right back as soon as I put down my already packed plate. GPS and signage made this place hard to find. Came during Culinaria Week the menu was good simple food great taste as was the wine. At rhe end of our meal lunch service was coming to a close and large pieces furniture were being moved creating loud construction like noises not what I would expect for this level of dining. Clearly they were ready for us to be done, we were still eatting our dessert when a waiter at the next table has a sneezing fit instead of walking away he just stood there. Overall, the meal started off knocking it out of the park - the tamale/crab tart & shrimp & grits were wonderfully flavorful. Then came our entrees. - Scallops with Brussels Sprouts & Catch if the Day - Tilefish with almond crust & Smoked Tomato butter. Overall, loved the general concepts of each dish - just need some fine tuning... The Catch was a great flavor combo however the Brussels (in the Scallop dish) needed to be roasted a bit longer & needed the added benefit of s&p - (naturally none one the table & it's super awkward to request it). We both felt that all the dishes including the coffee could've been warmer - not sure if they were sitting in window awhile or what. We loved our server but noticed as the meal went on she became weeded quickly. & the back waiter was virtually MIA. A table next to us waited a long time for their salads & then steaks we're served while salads were still on the table. Then the guy GOT UP to request steak knives - eek! Not good. One more service comment - the food runners should be MUCH more knowledgeable & confident about the plates they're serving. The menu is awesome & very interactive, so the show should be presented as such to the guests. Not even after a night of pounding pints of Delrium Tremens and shots of Mezcal and waking up in a "Coyote Ugly" sleeping arrangement did I have the same level of regret that I did after my dining experience at Sustenio. Maybe it's the skinflint in me, but there seems to be a direct correlation between "Executive chef" and my unhappiness with a meal. Had it not been for the Groupon I clutched in my sweaty little hand, I might have suffered what professionals call an "episode". Sustenio is a gorgeous restaurant in a gorgeous environment. The staff and servers were proficient and courteous. The food was tasty but not exceptional. Our water glasses were always topped off and needs attended to. One would not be criticized for taking their significant other here for an anniversary or special occasion (unless the aforementioned significant other was a skinflint like me). Prepare yourself for a menu boasting upwards of 20 items to include appetizers, small dishes, large dishes, sides, and desserts. As I am not a wine drinker, the extensive wine list was not at all impressive. I refuse to recognize a bar as a "full bar" when it lacks the one essential that to me is the very essence of a bar, draft beer. I had mentioned "ambiance" to a colleague, and fellow Elite Yelper, to which he replied, "Ambiance? I can't eat ambiance." Precisely! While ambiance has its time and place, I tend to not want to pay for it. As a result, restaurants such as Sustenio, always leave me with that BOHICA feeling. Back to the expansive menu... If you're of sufficient monetary means where ambiance is something you're willing to pay for, you'll no doubt enjoy Sustenio. However, when I spend nearly $30 on 2 pieces of chicken, and 2 biscuits, it's had better blow me away. Umm, no. What I received was a chicken leg marginally bigger than what you might get covered in Buffalo sauce, and a chicken breast that was cooked nearly to its carbon state. The biscuits, they were ok - just ok. The missus got their pan-seared scallops which I must admit, were huge, and tasted wonderful. The mac and cheese in squid ink, not so much. It was not the ink that made it bad but the over engineering that went into it. The pasta were pea sized nuggets of gloppy nothingness. I'll take a box of Kraft anyday. Proportions are tiny, as one might assume at such a restaurant. Overall, I was not impressed. I'd rather get a superior meal at 1/3 the price, and leave with a full belly and money in my wallet. I'm not entirely poo-pooing this place because it is beautiful and the Italian architecture outside is quite stunning to look at even if it is more Hollywood set than authentic architectural recreations. So I have been waiting to eat here for a while. Referring to previous reviews of Sustenio, the service was the make or break. Well, Lydia definitely deserves kuddos! Was greeted promptly and curiously, and were seated quickly. The waitress, Lydia, gave great insights into the menu, the more popular dishes as well as her personal favorites. Actually chose 2 of her recommendations. Had the Frito Mari... the calamari and shrimp with hot spinach as an appetizer. The it was cooked in a perfectly seasoned sauce that only left you wanting more. Lightly spiced with a touch of sweetness. The spinach went well with light breading. It was delicious, only the be overshadowed one of the main entrees. The grilled Moroccan Salmon was flavorful. Good for anyone with the taste for something on the lighter side. The lamb shank was star of the night. According to the waitress, the chef is debating on putting it perminantly on the menu. In my opinion, it should be. Juicy and tener lamb shank over Yukon mashed potatoes with a sweet and savory sauce made from crushed dates. It was accompanied by crunchy brussel sprouts. We all agreed it was the best meal on the table and some of the best lamb of recollection. With the amount of food, we made an usual decision and passed on dessert. However, during the meal, we had a glass of wine from an extended wine list that can easily be overwhelming. I feel the wine list is a bit much, but the atmosphere of restaurant is fun and urban. There's nothing better on Sunday than post-church brunch (followed by a post-brunch nap), and Sustenio really delivered! My family and I hit up their Sunday brunch buffet (10 am - 2 pm) located inside the Eilan Hotel and were greeted by friendly staff and a bright, clean interior. We started with coffee and mimosas and planned our attack on the buffet offerings! First we went for the fresh seafood (oysters and shrimp) and salad. Their homemade tartar sauce was to die for, and the shrimp was crazy fresh! I could've eaten them for my meal! But alas, we moved on to mains - there were breakfast options like an omelet station, scrambled eggs with sausage, bacon, and pancakes as well as lunch options like veggies, chicken, fish, and prime rib. I must say, the pancakes were SO GOOD! I was impressed. For dessert there were fruit, cookies, cupcakes, and bread pudding. I would've liked to see a chocolate offering, but that's just me! We went for the all you can eat Sunday brunch and enjoyed the food selection, the service and the atmosphere. Very upscale but laid back. This is one of the few places in San Antonio that has raw oysters on the buffet and they were delicious. We also enjoyed the Prime Rib and there is an excellent omelet station but unfortunately that was the only thing that was hot. To go boxes were offered which was a nice unheard of surprise. We had an unpleasant stay at the Eilan hotel, and our experience at the restaurant was no different. I'm assuming it's gone down since being purchased by Blue Green, to accommodate to a lower income crowd. First, my boyfriend has food allergies, and I am vegan (although sometimes I cheat with a little cheese). Due to our dietary restrictions, we always look at a menu before we go out to eat. The menu online was versatile, and had a lot of GF options for my boyfriend, and enough vegan options for me. To our dismay, the menu we received upon being seated was not the same as the one we found online. The server told us that the online menu hadn't been updated in forever. However, she was extremely accommodating, as was the manager, and worked to help us figure out what we could eat. The only thing we could have for appetizers were small house salads, to which the server asked "blue cheese or ranch"... what sort of "diamond rated" restaurant even considers those options? We asked for oil and vinegar. My boyfriend ordered a steak. It was so bad that he had to ask for A1 sauce. This is a man who never needs to ask for A1. The steak only came with a roasted shishito pepper, which was a strange plate, considering he had an amazing plated steak at Whiskey Cake the night before, with grains and veggies. I asked for a vegan style pasta with just a lot of vegetables, but told them I wouldn't mind if they threw a little bit of cheese in it. What came back was a creamy Alfredo type pasta. I'm lactose intolerant, which doesn't react to a little bit of Parmesan, but to cream, it certainly has a poor reaction. Overall, it was a $200 meal that would have probably tasted better for $75 at an Outback Steakhouse, which was really disappointing. We stay at the Eilan for 5 nights and during this stay dine here twice. We use to live in SA and dine here a handful of times. What we did like. Relax, high end feel, and walking distance from our place and George's Keep is just a few steps down. I already ate but met with friends and ordered chocolate cake, it was delicious and for $7 a decent deal in this ambience. What changed our mind. I always thought the service and food didn't really match the restaurant, especially boasting a renowned chef! Just came for the ambience. This time wanted to order take out to eat at the upper balcony but no host, then was acknowledged and told will be right back. Did not return, attitude was not great after I mention I waited for the menu. Yes you're busy but by nicer. Why is their no host in the first place? Finally able to order the free appetizers and bake oysters. Waited, waited, came back, Chase someone down to get food. Was charged for one of the appetizers, but suppose to free per guest. Told it will not be charge. Guess what, got charged at check out! Got refunded though. Well the tacos not bad, but better at the local Mexican restaurants. Oysters, one bite and threw the rest away, it was nasty. Overall, if this restaurant wasn't tied to this hotel it wouldn't stay open. Whoever owns or runs this place obviously doesn't dine here. After the last experience I could not recommend anymore and our friends all agreed. So much potential here, wish you the best Sustenio! read more

The most expensive and ridiculous place in the area!!! Definitely not at the Bluegreen guest range, unless you want too get ripped off after buying a timeshare. A basic glass of wine will cost you $15-20, any mix drinks are $20. This place is in the middle of nowhere, no major attractions or anything, what justify such outrageous prices. Wait person and hostess were delightful, and the off-menu wine suggestion by the waitress redeemed the meal. Beyond that, pretty disappointing. The place has wall-to-wall wines, but the by-the glass selections are scant and very similar. Online, this was represented as Tuscan or more Mediterranean, but it's generic Americana. Not a single pasta option that I could see. So I ordered the filet, though oddly paired with a pepper sauce (think "Tabasco") and Bock chop, plus a side of brussell sprouts. The steak and then Russell sprouts were overlooked, but prepared well. I asked for medium and gone well done - zero pink and a little tough. The sprouts also overdone were beyond crispy and a little tough. Mentioned the steak to night the hostess and waitress, who offered to take it back, but you can't I cook a steak, and I didn't care to wait for another. I left most of it, as much because it was ironically (being overdone) not served hot at all, but room temp. Felt bad that my other party member didn't make it, so I thought maybe a bread pudding and coffee would better redeem the meal. Coffee was decent but not fresh brewed, and the bread pudding again was deliciously flavorful, but far from hot. Ice cream on top never melted on the cold cake, but again, was flavorful. So, temp control is the real problem. Two people offered to take the steak back and I didn't finish it, but surprisingly there was no comp - full price for it all. Good flavor across the board, but poor cooking. Environment was okay, but apart from the beautiful wines around the walls, more like a bar than a restaurant with noise and cigar smoke. It was decent creatively and service (minus the no-comp issue), but not worth it. Despite the bonus open table points, go to Perry's or Whiskey Cake for a better meal and better environment nearby. I don't usually give 1 stars reviews, but when I do the service is atrocious or the food is practically inedible. In Sustenio's case, it may be a little bit of both. Since it was restaurant week, we decided to try a new restaurant. Sustenio has fairly positive reviews from fellow elites, so we decided to give it a try. Let me start off by saying the restaurant looks amazing and has great ambiance. It is housed in the elegant Eilan Resort. The ambiance and décor is where the positivity ends with this place. We were seated fairly quickly upon checking in, but it took a while for our server to come up to us. We also found it strange we were only given regular menus and had to ask for the restaurant week menu knowing that they were participating. We were reluctantly given the menus and finally decided to place our drink and dinner orders. For appetizers I had the wood fired oysters and my husband had the buffalo sweetbreads. Both appetizers tasted very good but the sweetbread appetizer was incomplete. Missing the blue cheese crumble, celery and chives as described on the menu. Not a big deal, but still disappointing. For our entrees I ordered the Honey Fried Chicken and my husband got the 18-hour sous-vide short rib. My entrée was very good, the chicken was very juicy and the breading was prefect. My husband's sous-vide short rib was inedible. It was so tough that it was even difficult to cut it with a steak knife. The taste was even worse. It tasted like it was cooked in the microwave for an excessive amount of time. It was just a disgusting chewy mess. There's no way that the short rib was sous-vided for 18 hours, if at all. Appalled that the chef/cook would even allow that to be served. My husband barely ate anything and pretty much had a full plate. Our server didn't even ask how our food was. She just asked if she could take our plates away even though the food was barely touched. At this point we could only hope that the dessert would help us forget the disaster of a short rib. We both ordered the Pecan Bread pudding. Sounds delicious right? It did look delicious when it was served to us, but unfortunately it was nowhere near as good as it looked. The outside of the bread pudding was charred leaving an unpleasant "burnt" taste and texture on my palate. Needless to say, our dessert plate was left untouched as well. I can't believe a restaurant like this would serve such crappy food and expect you to be fine with it. This is a time when I wish Chef Ramsey could come into their kitchen to yell at everyone for serving garbage and throw all the plates away! Sustenio wins the award for giving us the worst dining experience we've had in a very long time! To add insult to injury, this was by no means a cheap meal. It's one thing for a restaurant to serve bad food, but it's another for the staff to be completely apathetic towards their customer's dining experience. They truly do not care about their customers. For that reason we will never dine here again. read more

Came here with my children that came in town for a nice dinner and we found this place to have our thanksgiving dinner. Loved the ambiance and everyone was very nice! However the food quality was very disappointing for the price. Everything was decent and barely warm as it came out. Yes, we were all so excited about the new, high end, celebrity chef run restaurant opening at the massive (cough - eyesore - cough) Eilan development. Unfortunately, the way Sustenio presents itself does not correspond with the actual experience. Our table's food was hit or miss. Two of the three proteins were overcooked, but the scallops were some of the best I'd had in recent memory. The dessert was divine. The drinks were solid but took for.ev.er. Service was definitely below expectations. Its in a weird location, very expensive, and just ok. I'll probably give it another shot and hope they get some kinks out in the next few months, but I can't say it will become my go to special occasion spot. read more

Very disappointed. Had high expectations after being wowed by everything else at Eilan and was hoping for the same at Sustenio. Service was inexcusably poor. Received day old bread 30 minutes into our meal, ordered wine which never came, server was not helpful with the menu. Scallops were completely overcooked and small, the worst I've had at any restaurant. Apple cake for dessert was stale. On a positive, presentations were very nice and sea bass ceviche was refreshing, but not enough to make up for everything else. Seems like there are some good reviews so I'm not sure if my experience was a fluke. Regardless, I will not be back and I would caution others to think twice given the apparent lack of consistency. read more

Arrived to lunch in a completely deserted restaurant, and hair on my napkin. We both ordered the tacos of the day... picadillo with sour cream and flour tortillas. The "fresh brioche" bread brought out first was NOT brioche, but was flavorless and dry. The picadillo was saturated with chili powder and lacking in any other seasoning. It also had raisins in it, which did not compliment the dish and were tough and chewy. Tortillas seemed store bought. The tacos were topped with an equally flavorless corn & black bean salsa. Neither of us ate our food. And the server couldn't have cared less. We won't be back. read more

We tried out Sustenio the other week and were reasonably impressed. The ambiance was great. They have many semi-private dining areas and we were seated in one. The service was not at the level I would expect for a place like this but still very good. The cocktails were interesting and tasty. We tried 6 of the ceviches and liked all but one. I am not a huge ceviche expert but I honestly like the one at El Bucannero better than any of the fancy varieties they have here. I ordered a ceasar salad and the wood-smoked lamb. The salad was pretty good but not great. It came rolled up in a parmesan cylinder which was more interesting looking than tasty. The lamb dish was very solid - expertly cooked but it seemed to lack inspiration. I know that is nit-picky but at these prices you get to be nit-picky. The deal breaker was the price. I don't object to the price-point outright but when I pay that much I expect something really special. From the moment I walk in to the moment I walk out, I expect everything to be perfect. From the service to the timing of the dishes, the flavor of the food - and basically everything. That really wasn't the case for us at Sustenio. Someone at our table asked everyone to rate thier experience from 1-10. I was kind of surprised by this move . .but Ok . . I went first and said 8 out of 10. But the scores ranged from 8 out of 10 down to 5 out of 10 as apparently some people were not happy with thier entrees. One said thiers was cold and one who ordered the chicken said something about it being way too expensive for a pretty simple dish. I do remember seeing it land at the table and thinking something along the same lines. Our bills were something around $300 per couple (including drinks) which is too much for an 8 out of 10 experience and way, way too much for a 5 out of 10. Still, they do have things that not too many places in town have so, for what it's worth . .I'm glad I went but I doubt I'll be back. read more

I've been wanting to take my wife here for awhile. The hotel and the surrounding complex are beautiful and I figured the restaurant must be top notch as well. My wife and I enjoy fine dining more than most and do this quite often. We made a reservation on OpenTable and showed up 5 minutes early. The decor in the restaurant is quite nice and exactly what you would expect at this price point. We were taken to our table right away. We sat there for 5 minutes watching the staff continue to walk past us and not once did anyone even acknowledge us. A group of four were seated right next to us several minutes after we were seated and someone immediately came to their table. We were now a little annoyed, but waited several more minutes and still no one acknowledged us. The restaurant was only half full, so the staff was clearly not too busy to attend to us. At this point we got up and walked out. We told the hostess on the way out why we were leaving and she reacted as if we said we had a great dinner. She didn't apologize, she didn't get the manager, she didn't say they would make it better next time. She simply said thank you and good night. We're we dining at Outback Steakhouse or something at that price point, we would be far more understanding of being ignored. However Sustenio is supposed to be a high end restaurant, and is priced like a high end restaurant, so we expect a certain level of service. At this price point we can go to any restaurant in San Antonio we want and often dine at Fleming's and Myron's when in the mood for a top notch experience, as the food and service have been impeccable each time at these restaurants. We will never return to Sustenio and will spend our money elsewhere next time we are in the mood for a nice dinner out. read more
