Finally visited this taqueria, despite the Yelp reviews. And, I'm glad I did! I had the basics: carne asada tacos and chips and salsa. The chips and salsa aren't complimentary, unlike most Mexican food restaurants. Boooo for that. I wasn't too fond of the chips based on the oil they're fried in. Tasted "porky" (I don't eat pork). I liked the red salsa though. Now back to the important stuff: the tacos. YUMMMM!!! The asada was nicely flavorful and tender, just as they should be. They're the size of your regular street taco. If you haven't had street tacos before and are expecting something larger, don't. That's how authentic tacos are served. The tortillas were okay. They didn't taste homemade and didn't seem to have been put on the grill long enough. They were a little "out of the bag" tasting. Regardless, I'll eat here again. It's not the best taqueria, but it's close by and definitely worth the walk. Maybe I'll try something else on the menu at another time. read more

I have to say how much I regret of not having come before! I've been living in the neighborhood for around 4 years and I am so glad that today we decided to give this spot a chance. The first thing to say is once you get in the cleanliness in the whole place makes you want to stay. We had the steak nachos, they were very well served in presentation, quantity and flavor! We had the steak and Al Pastor Tacos, very tasty and with a good amount of meat. I would just suggest to sell them separately instead the minimum of 3, they were so big that after one I was really full and I still had the nachos to finish! And last but not less, the service. One of the more important things when trying a place is the kindness, empathy and efficiency of the server. He was amazing, very professional, fast and super nice. I loved this place. Chips + Salsa + Tacos de Lengua + Burrito Suizo = #EatLikeAnA$$hole Seriously... I should have worn my fat pants. And by fat pants I mean the meggings that are four sizes too big for me. The chips & salsa they bring to your table are good, just take it easy on the salsa because the pain receptors in your mouth will be feeling the heat at room temperature and the introduction of hot food into the mix will make it feel like you're eating hot lava. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. A lot of people like it hot, Mr Beautiful included. I just wanted to warn some of the Yelper's who can't take the heat and Yelp in pain when things get a little too spicy. I like the tacos the lengua here. Like any taqueria, they're simple: tortilla, lengua, cilantro, onion. Squeeze a little lime juice on them, add a bit of salsa, and you're good to go. The best part is that they're extremely generous with the lengua. What can I say? I like it with A LOT of tongue! The burrito suizo was pretty tasty. I could have gone with the healthier chicken burrito, but, since I was already eating like an a$$hole, I figured that I'd get the carne asada burrito covered in cheese, sour cream, and salsa. I can't remember everything that was in the burrito, but the one thing that stood out was the fact that it had lettuce. Yeah, they've mastered the art of putting lettuce in a burrito full of hot deliciousness without having it turn all soggy. I've had burrito suizos at many restaurants and taquerias of various levels of Mexcellence™ and I have to say that the one I had here is up there with some of the better ones I've had. I'm in the area quite often and will most definitely be returning to try the other delicious items on their menu. I suggest you come here too. If you're lucky, you just might run into me. Susupuato looks sketchy as shit from the outside. It's the type of place that I would walk by and wonder wtf anyone eats there. Definitely not noticeable, easy to overlook, whatever you want to call it. I happened to live across the street for a year and thus know that it, in fact, seriously kicks ass at Mexican food. My life didn't even know fajita burritos before Susupuato. And they set the bar high so I now compare every fajita burrito to theirs. It is GOOD. That is all I ever ordered there - the fajita burrito - but I can also tell you they have some wicked good salsa verde and my friends claim greatness on the enchiladas. If by authentic you mean aftertastes of acidic garbage juice, then yes! OK. That may be a little harsh, but my experience with Susupuato was bad enough that I won't be going back. I ordered the gorditas dinner with chicken and chorizo. The chicken (both dark and white meat, fyi) tasted funky--very bitter and chewy--a bit what I imagine chicken from the bottom of a garbage can to taste like. The chorizo was definitely better, but the veggies in both gorditas were sad, wilty things. The boyfriend ordered a steak fajita burrito, and it was definitely the best thing we had. The peppers and onions were tasty, and the steak had decent-to-good flavor, even if it was a bit gristly. The horchata was a bit watered-down, definitely not the best I've had but not terrible. I probably won't be back and will opt for joints like La Amistad instead, but if I do find myself in Susupuato again, I'll go for the fajita burrito instead. read more

This used to be a regular lunch place for me and would still be if it was just a tad more convenient. I LOVE this place for oh so many reasons: 1) It looks dive-y from the outside but couldn't be less so. The dining room is actually enormous and it's kinda fun to sit in the "window seats"--note: only do this when the weather is cool, otherwise you start to feel like an ant under a magnifying glass...but that's a detail. 2) The food is great. That "funny" aftertaste spoken of earlier is what I like to call "authentic." This is not your mom's Chi-Chi's. No. The beans and rice are as real as could be. I usually opt for chicken or beef tacos on the corn tortilla--mmmm. And the portions couldn't be more generous. Add avocado and wow...life's lookin' up. Their salsas are homemade but the salsa verde...so good I could drink it by itself. Beware--the salsas are pretty spicy, so don't go gettin' all ambitious right away. The fresh tortilla chips should help you out a little there. 3) The price seems almost unreal. Most often I've walked out of there feeling ready to fall into a tomatillo-induced coma only to realize I paid so little for my lunch that I could probably find room for a little dessert. With prices like these, you'd almost tolerate okay food. The best part of this place: YOU DON"T HAVE TO!!! Go. Go. Go. They're just as good for takeout and a helluva lot better than Jimmy John's next door for a quick, cheap lunch. read more

I like neighborhood places and I like small, unfancy taquerias. Susupuato fits both of these descriptors and provides more than I ever expected. I have eaten in a couple of times, nothing to write home about, but nothing to have to get dressed up over either! The staff is incredibly friendly and the food speaks for itself. The standard meals ordered here comes without fanfare, without polish, but more than satisfies expectations. I have never been disappointed with the food. The beans are awesome! This should be a hint that the rest of the food is also gonna make you happy! I usually stick with the steak burrito... I know, boring, but, it is HUGE!! I eat half of it for one meal, and half for another! Last time I had food from here we had ordered for delivery. Delivery was and is always quick- and I appreciate that too!! The boys consumed their food with glee! They had enchiladas, a chimichanga, and something else, as well as rice, beans, and the Verde sauce. I left my 1/2 burrito in the fridge, meaning to have it for lunch later in the week. Sadly, it had already been consumed by one of my friends! He took it to work for lunch and loved it. I was working from the home base and needed a walk and some freakin' tacos, so I as I ventured down the street I ran across what I thought looked like a likely prospect. Boy, was I wrong. Only customer in the place, and it took fully 10 minutes before they came to me as I stared blankly at the bizarre wall mural of what I could only tell was a bizarre Disney-like dream of mermaids and bulls. I still have no idea what that was about. As I diddled about on my phone trying to make an attempt at work, I was able to order a Mineragua and four tacos - a mix, since I have a terrible time deciding. As I stuffed pre-made chips in my mouth with decidedly bland red salsa, I was trying to figure out how the the overhead here worked. Is this place ever busy? They're really trying hard. Hm. Maybe I'm selling them short. I've had some Mexican cuisine before that's popped my eyes out and required replacement before, so perhaps this is an undiscovered treasure. But no. Sadly no. One chicken on flour, one steak on corn (cilantro/onion), two al pastor on corn ('cos I love al pastor if it's good). Bland. I had a hard time telling one from the other - they gotta up their spices, 'cos on every level it tasted just the same. All the same....all the same...all THE SAME.... Like Styx. Unfortunate. I had high hopes that there'd be a go-to right here, but I think they're catering to a palate that they shouldn't. I want to like this place, but I didn't. The server was a sweetheart so I have no problem on that point. It's just their music system was going at the same time as the tv right behind me. I chose a bad place to sit. I ordered a large horchata and got the great honking styrofoam one, and a combo. I have never had a tostada sans beans. Well, here, that's what I got. I also got a tiny corn taco and a tiny enchilada, that was folded over instead of rolled. Never saw that before. I think for almost eleven bucks there should at least be normal-sized portions. It was annoying. Their salsa verde is not hot enough. It was like green wet stuff. I had to use a ton of it to get any flavor. And their mole sauce on the enchilada tasted like bbq sauce with chocolate melted in it. Just all-around not right. And the chips were stale. Still, I do have to say the potato pieces in the taco meat were great. I love tacos like that. I can't afford to give them another chance. read more

I have had the take-out twice now and feel comfy telling you...that I dream about this restaurant. Being a Texas native, I long for some good, authentic Mexican food. This place hits the spot! Some Details: 1. The first time I visited I got the chicken tacos with rice and beans. AMAZING! The shreaded chicken was VERY tasty and there was a ton of it on my tacos. I also got a glass of orchata- and it was some of the best I have had in the city. 2. The dining room looks nice and big, but I have never eaten inside before. It was also clean and quiet! 3. There is a ton of meter parking all around, so I don't have a problem getting a spot, even during the lunch rush. 4. The second time I went I got chicken tamales with rice and beans. I had to knock off a star for the tamales, because there was so little meat in the tamale, that I thought at first I had ordered wrong. There was literally 2 pieces of tiny chicken in one of the tamales, but the other one was better. The more full of the two was very good. I dipped my tamales in the green sauce....which is now my favorite sauce in the city! The chips and salsa were wonderful as well. Salty and homemade! read more

The wife was working in Evanston one afternoon and I was ordered to supply her with lunch. This order was given while I was in the car. She demanded Mexican food. I happened to be driving by Taq Susupuato. So I pulled over. To my surprise, it was pretty crowded for a Thursday afternoon. One big table and a few couples were having lunch, not to mention a good string of take out orders being prepped. I ordered up my wife's usual, carne asada tacos with rice and beans. I picked out a nice carnitas burrito for myself and headed up to Evanston for an impromtu picnic lunch. We were surprised by how good the food is. Susupuato can be easily lost in the miriade of Uptown and Edgewater taquerias. There seems to be about a thousand of them, which is great. Personally, I've always come along and got the same waitress who is very nice and actually lets me practice speaking Spanish with her. There is nothing overwhelmingly awesome about Susupuato, but it is a fair priced spot with good food and service. Amongst this style of restaurants I think it is a bit more difficult to stand out in a crowd. Susupauto differentiates itself from the mexican joint on every other corner by it's decor and service. Don't get me wrong the food is good, but not outstanding. The place is nice and clean, and has a nice little exican feel to it. The walls are decorated with oil painting of mother and child cooking handmade tortillas on a clay stove, and other colorful Mexican art. I usually get a steak torta and some tacos. I like my tacos just with lime, onions and cilantro. The biggest component in Mexican food is the meat. Their steak could use some more seasoning, and they could serve a higher quality steak. More often than not I get those pieces of tough fat. nasssstay. If you're in the area, stop by, really no need to go out of your way though. I have been going here for years because their service and food is wonderful but this last trip i had to leave a review. I graduated with my Ph.D. From Loyola and i chose to come here for my graduation dinner. Tony is taking over the restaurant and he was the most helpful, hospitable, and fun owner I've ever come in contact with. He made sure our meals were the exactly what we wanted, celebrated with us, and accommodated our difficult orders. I've had nothing here but tacos, so my scope is a little limited. The chorizo tacos were dry but inoffensive. On Thursday, March 23 after a men's volleyball match at Loyola's Gentile Arena, we sought a restaurant nearby. The kitchen of the one that we had planned to attend was closed by the time we arrived; however, next door was Susupuato. From the street, the restaurant had a brightly colored decor and appeared very clean. We were immediately escorted to our table, served chips with very tasty green and red salsas. The salsas were smooth and not very viscous, but unique in flavor. We were also given a complimentary cup of soup which was so tasty. We ordered chicken enchiladas suizas, cheesy chiles rellenos, and a pork al pastore tostada dinner with guacamole and pico de gallo sides. Our traditional lime margarita on ice with chilli tajin on the rim of the fish bowl glass with a lime slice was generous with the tequilla and very enjoyable. All of our entrees were most enjoyable. As we were the last guests in the restaurant when we were finished, Tony, the owner, spent a lot of time with us relating the history of the restaurant and the menu changes that he has incorporated in the last 3 years as well as his plans for the near future. He explained that all of his meals are freshly prepared. He touted his mole and even gave us a small sample to take home with those portions of our meals that we could not eat because of their so generous in size. The sides of guacamole and pico de gallo were very high quality and so fresh. We have eaten in many fine quality Mexican restaurants in Dallas & San Antonio, Texas, Salt Lake City, UT {The Red Iguana}, and the Chicago area as well as Guadalaja, Jalisco, MX. Susupuato is as good as any of those. We promised Tony that we would make a special trip from our homes in Crystal Lake, IL and southeast Wisconsin to enjoy his fine food again. We encourage everyone who loves fine Mexican food to go to Susupuato. The food quality, hospitality, and environment at fair prices will not disappoint you. They have very accommodating hours and prices and Dolores, the server, is so sweet.
