So we checked this butcher shop out after having brunch at Sylvester's in Northampton. It only opened yesterday, so we were eager to see what they had to offer. We were going to walk but due to the 10-15 degree weather, we decided to be lazy Americans and drive our candy asses there. Its new so stating that its fresh and clean is to be expected. One thing that was nice is they paid attention to the details. They have bead board wainscoting 2/3 of the way up the wall. A faux paneled green ceiling and warm wooden floors. Their meat selection wasn't where it will be in a couple of weeks but they still had plenty to offer. All grass fed chicken, pork, beef, and turkey. Price: The prices are very high but I guess that's all relative to how much value you place on grass fed meat. Their prices are considerably higher than whole foods for certain items. For example their pork chops were 13.99 per lb and whole foods was 6.99 per lb. That being said I'm not sure what the pigs were fed in both scenarios so it's hard to say if their price increase is justified. Customer Service: They were pretty dead when we arrived but the owner was happy to answer our questions, and didn't mind that I was taking more pictures than a Japanese tourist. His wife was also making sausages by hand with a hand operated meat grinder with pig intestine as the casing (you know that is some quality sausage- insert dirty joke here). Quality: I didn't think their steaks or pork chops looked any better than Whole Foods. one thing i do appreciate is all of their beef came from the same cow and they ensure that a minimal amount of the cow is wasted. He also gave us a sample of the roast beef that they seasoned themselves. Both Jessica and I said it was the best piece of sandwich meat that had ever entered our mouths. This was 12.99 per lb and well worth the price. Website: Their website is what made us so excited to check this place out. They give you their personal background, what sets them apart from other butchers,and links to all the local farmers they do business with. One of the farmers, (Gray Dogs Farm) can give you the history of the animal on any cut of meat that you buy... that is pretty amazing. Bottom Line: If you are trying to eat healthy meats from local farmers, with a proven reputation for quality they meet the criteria but I can't justify paying their prices with whole foods or several of the farms available that you can directly buy from. If you buy your meats at Costco don't go here, you'll have a damn heart attack. Assuming what i bought is delicious, I may go here for certain specialty items/ dinner parties. Quality products, knowledgeable staff, but unless you're a Rockefellar you won't be buying all your meat from here. Check it out (be prepared to drop some cash) and try the roast beef. read more

Inspiring husband and wife team putting their soul into their shop. Just as some restaurants with open view kitchens have nothing to hide, Sutters is the same. They have a board stating what farm each animal was raised at. Their butchering table in full view. Not only open to answer, but welcoming questions. In addition to the butchered meats, they also have sausages, charcuterie, deli and smoked meats, and stocks, all made in house. They believe that happy and healthy animals raised in its natural environment makes for better tasting, fuller flavored meat. Very friendly, very helpful, great meat with great local, ethical sourcing. It's an old fashioned butcher so they will explain things, make recommendations, and cut up whatever you choose, however you ask. The deli meats are oddly good (bologna!), the sausages are excellent (I love the Moroccan lamb and the relatively mild but delicious pork andouille), and the prepared stocks and rotisserie chickens are excellent. Pricey! Always a good idea to poke around the freezers for sale items and stock bones. read more

I love Sutter! For those mentioning the high prices, we shouldn't be asking ourselves why it's so expensive but rather why other stores are pricing so cheap? The meat here is very high quality, raised humanely and cut by people who really know what they're doing. I personally would rather spend where I know it's going directly to business owners, farmers and processors in the pioneer valley. I had bought chicken bone broth there on numerous occasions. On the last occasion when I came home it dropped on the floor, I wasn't immediately concerned because it was in a plastic container, obviously not, the plastic of that container was very cheap. Sutter meats is the only high-end whole animal butcher shop of it's kind in Massachusetts. The couple who own and run it, Susan and Terry, [the name comes from that mashup], trained at the legendary Fleisher's in Kingston, NY and spent some time in Manhattan before moving up to the Valley after a national survey of appealing locations to open such a place. Spencer, the manager, is a great guy, and very friendly. Most of their meat comes from farms within ten miles of their location. My favorites tend to be their bacon, tallow, sausages, and short rib burgers, but you can get pretty much anything there [although many things are available for limited windows]. They also now serve outstanding and affordable sandwiches each day for lunch with bread from Tart. But get there quickly, because they always sell out. read more

We have been here a few times and made purchases every time. Many of the previous reviewers have compared the prices to Whole Foods. The problem with that, especially their pork(chops as were mentioned) is that is is only step 1 or 2 on their animal care rating system, depending on their sourcing. This is barely better that the cruel and tortured pork available at "Stop & Shop" or "Costco". While we were there, they were actually butchering a pig. I found out that the man doing the work, raises pigs, pasture style, like in the OLD DAYS. Yes, it's expensive. But, we as a culture eat way too much meat. If we ate meat the way our bodies were designed, we could eat better quality meats, less often. We are NOT even close to wealthy. We just choose to put our money where our mouths are, literally. If I had one complaint about Sutter Meats at all, it would be better ventilation. Everything we have purchased has had a smoked flavor to aroma, even if it wasn't supposed to. I truly appreciate that they do all of their own work like that, but I don't want my stock bones to be smoke flavored. I also ate at Jakes today and had their biscuits and gravy. When I asked them where the pork was sourced from, they told me Sutter Meats. That's the only reason I ordered it. Don't compare this place to Stop & Shop or Costco, etc. that's like comparing Tiffany and Walmart when engagement ring shopping. read more

I'm so glad this place opened! It's very hard to find fresh (not frozen) meats from local farms in western MA. I took my 4th trip to Sutter this morning, and the selection has gotten better every time. Today I got some sliced ham for sandwiches, and some maple breakfast sausage. The ham was great and I'm looking forward to sausage and pancakes in the morning. So far I've loved everything I've tried. Yes, you'll pay more here than at most other stores. But the prices are actually lower than I expected, given the high rent of downtown Northampton and the super high quality. The prices are comparable to what you'd pay at a farmer's market, and in some cases a bit lower. Cheap meat is terrible for the environment, animals, and our health. I love visiting and shopping here. Here is where you can get good advice on the cut of meat you can use for a meal. There have been times I have come in fully expecting to use one cut of meat but buying another one and then loving it. I will definitely say that the beef for steaks are awesome, especially when having used one of the recent NYT recipes for pan-seared steak. The skirt steak comes in a piece nearly as long as my arm, which is impressive. This may sound strange but the meat itself actually smells like flowers or vegetables (similar to the produce department at River Valley Market) when I bring it home and open up the package. Maybe it's from what the animal ate, and it's a good sign. As for prices, for something that cooks up nicely it's worth it. read more

I am willing to drive from Amherst, ignoring Whole Foods (who I do appreciate for being able to buy by the pound and not just pre-packaged meat, which is the downfall of both Stop and Shop and Big Y, who force you to buy a pound of ground meat at a time), because I would buy from a butcher any day over a grocery store. This place is fantastic - their tamales are excellent, and they have the best pastrami I've ever eaten (it converted my boyfriend too, and we are both from New York). They are friendly and clean, and quick to give samples - today we tried their version of head cheese with pistachios (fantastic) and the crust of a pigs belly (fresh from the oven). For locally sourced meat, especially that tastes so good, they are totally reasonably priced. Love love love, and will come back to the valley just for them! read more

After trying their sandwich of the day my life is complete. The slow braised Moroccan lamb on focaccia with honey yogurt was absolutely amazing. At only $7 I would happily have payed more for it. This establishment probably needs more time to get up and running. I went in on the third day after it officially opened and wasn't terribly impressed. The display cases were practically empty except for a few tired looking pieces of meat scattered haphazardly and rather unappetizingly inside. It reminded me of those pictures you used to see of barren shelves in shops in the old Soviet Union, with a couple of elderly women fighting over a head of cabbage and a pig's foot. But back to Sutters: They're going to have to do a better job of showcasing the merchandise, especially considering the prices, which are shockingly high -- 50 to a 100 percent more than what you'd pay for the same cuts at an ordinary supermarket, and even more than at Whole Foods. A chuck roast, for example, was going for $11/pound! I'm very skeptical they'll be able to compete with, say, Serio's, which is only a couple blocks away. Well, I bought one of those chuck roasts, braised it slowly with onions and carrots in a little wine and broth, and it was delicious, but frankly no better than a pot roast from Stop and Shop at $5/lb. I'm all for selling meat that's locally sourced, comes from humanely raised animals, etc., but it has to be affordable -- otherwise it's just an exercise in elitism. Oh, and I also tried their spicy Italian sausage -- used it as a pizza topping -- way too salty. I'll probably go back to Sutters in a couple months and hope to see better looking meat more attractively displayed -- and lower prices! read more
