Well, I went and did it. I ate ramen at Suttree's. It seems like all the reviews that I have read about this place and their ramen is just over the top and that it's the best in Knoxville for it... I hate to be that guy that just goes against everyone, but it was just okay. Literally, I believe the ramen could have been made by anyone. I ordered the black shin ramen. The beef brisket was a little hard, I guess that's what the broth was there for... to soften it. The ramen noodles itself, well, you know what it reminded me of? The ramen noodles that came out of bags that I ate when I was absolutely broke in college. The broth had a subtle kick to it, you know the heat that comes in after a while that just warms you up. But that was it, there was not really any taste. The SO mentioned that you could get the same thing in packaged ramen, with a diluted flavor packet. I do have to say the noodles and contents that goes with the broth is where it's at for me. All of those things have to compliment each other, and it just didn't do it. I do have to give it to Suttree's though... $10 for a bowl of ramen is a nice profit. To me though, it wasn't worth it, obviously. One thing I do agree about Suttree's is... BEER. Worth. If you decide to come here, make sure you get some brews. If you're here for ramen, pass. I guess I'm still on the hunt for some good ramen in Knoxville. Shin black bowl - the portion of ramen is balanced with the broth but I must warn you, it's not spicy. It came with sliced small tomatoes, shredded carrots, kimchee, poached egg and pork. As for the serving, you'll be full off one bowl. I couldn't help but to notice that they used the packaged Chapagetti. It was microwaved in a bowl, with the broth I assumed, and topped with what you chose. The mandarin buns were not what I thought it was going to be. It was the Mon Tao buns and not the thin buns. I don't mean to be a stickler but I'm pretty sure this wasn't steamed on the premise; these are sold frozen for a cheap price. The hummus looked fresh though. It was thick and to my likings. Their pita chips are Stacey's brand. Overall, I think it's over priced for packaged ramen. But hey, it's not sold anywhere else so it's a pretty good marketing strategy. read more

Justin was great with service, bartending, & was transparent on the wait for food! Get a drink or flight of sours in my case and relax. 45 mins later I taste the best elevated ramen dish! I didn't hesitate to mark this as the one place in downtown Knoxville I must return to & share with friends to visit. Usually places with craft beers do not have good food, but this was the exception! My son enjoyed the arcade/pinball games in the connected suite. He also ate his entire meal and in no time was ready to return to play pinball machines. I hate to leave such a negative review for a place with really awesome ramen, but the bar staff is so disappointing, I can't help myself. I have been here five times. Pre and post Covid, the staff's attitude is that just ordering your food/beer is a bother to them. I have come back because the ramen is unmatched in town but I don't even think the soup could pull me in again. I get it that this isn't a corporate cheesy chain, so I'm not expecting to see smiles plastered on faces of the staff but they have such a lack of personality it's almost insulting. Pretty wonderful, chill bar. I really miss the pool table though; not enough pool tables in the downtown Knox area anymore. Also super miss the old school dart boards. It seems the hockey arcade games and foosball have taken over pool/darts which caused me not to go as much. The ramen is fire. Great beer selection. They were one of the first establishments to offer "high gravity" beer before it became mainstream, hence why it's in their name. It was fantastic at that time. No one else could offer what this place could.... over the years, legislative changes allowed pretty much everyone to carry high gravity beer. Someone thing else I would point out, and this has been a theme here for several years now- It seems to me and other friends who have gone here all notice- the staff here think pretttttty highly of themselves, because pouring 12oz is liquid into glasses is a super rare skill most people can't understand/will never have? Cool. However, they still do have great brews! Unless you're staying right on gay street and don't feel like walking, there are better options. read more

Babalu Tapas & Tacos: $2 is a DEAL) A tri-F@#!'n-fecta in my book! The best bits were all the pin-ball machines (and video games) and Ian the bartender. (Thanks for the stickers, my tractor looks cooler all ready). Most the pinball is 50 cents a play. We had so much fun there, we actually missed Babala's 'cause we had to meet friends at Tupelo Honey (see next review). Great selection in beer and they have wine in a can...now I know what you're thinking... but the price was good and so was the vino. Lastly, they have the coolest bar-top in town. I'd love to give this place a better review as I absolutely love any combination of games and beer. However, many of the games were out of service and or just tattered. We started with drinks and their basketball game which was $1 per single player. If the balls wouldn't have been mostly flat and we didn't have to reach up to pull them out instead of them rolling to the player as expected it might not have seemed like a rip off. But it did because the game just hadn't been kept up. This goes for several others as well. There are games that are in perfect working order like the foosball tables that were fun and a felt appropriately priced. We ended up sitting at the bar playing shoot the moon and that was a blast. Overall, based on the upkeep and the game prices it's a 3 out of 5 star for us. read more

Love this place! The games and environment are so fun. Great beers and amazing ramen bowls. Bartender tonight was kind of terrible. Probably because I brought my kids in and thought we'd be a hassle and wouldn't tip well. As a fellow service industry worker I usually tip well, but don't appreciate being ignored for other customers because they think a mom is not gonna be worth the trouble. This place is an awesome addition to Knoxville, it's sort of like a slightly less hipster version of Philadelphia's Barcade. There are some tables to enjoy drinks and food, and some bar seating at their two bars. Then there are a good handful of arcade games available. There were about 4-5 versions of that ball-rolling arcade game and 4-5 versions of pinball. Then there's the classic car racing games, and only a few other games other than those. They actually had a really good craft beer selection and despite their large crowd, the bartenders were good at not keeping you waiting by the bar for your drink for very long. Staff was friendly and the place was warm on a night when it was cold outside. It is a great environment, my only complaints would be to expand the variety in game types. There were coats everywhere too, so maybe a few hooks so we don't have to worry about beer spills whenever someone reaches for their coat. read more

YES!!!!! I love this place. Suttree's is a high gravity tavern with an excellent selection. They have a mix of high gravity and regular beers. They have about 15 taps and also a selection of bottled beers. They have some bombers you can share as well. I also noticed a few bottles of liquor on the shelves, which was interesting. Didn't see any prices on it. The atmosphere is perfect and the crowd is eclectic. This is a true bar, which is what I've been waiting for. No TVs, loud music, or dumbass computer games at the bar. Just delicious beer and good conversation. I'm hoping this place remains low key and chill for a while because the atmosphere would be terrible if it was taken over by a loud and rowdy crowd, like the Brewery has turned into. I feel this is the one bar in Knoxville I can sit down and have a beer in peace. Now on to the beers. Every beer on draft can be purchased as a full pint or in a flight (I believe was a 3 or 4 oz. sample). This is excellent because some high gravity beers can be a bit funkier than others and this way you can sample and share and find out which one is worth splurging on the full pint. Prices are good and depend on the alcohol content. Higher alcohol obviously being more expensive. There isn't a happy hour to my knowledge, but always specials. For example, when I was there the keg was getting low on the Foothills beers so they discounted them to $3 per pint. Most people love Suttree's for their various and ever changing high gravity beer options, I am not most people. I like to eat. I really like to eat good food. And a hot bowl of spicy ramen brings me back time and time again. Every time I am here, I peruse the menu as if I might actually try something new off the menu, but I just can't quit the ramen. The broth gives you the perfect amount of sniffles, each bite you take that you find pulled pork makes you feel like you've won a prize, and the topping options are endless (house made kimchi, fresh egg, etc). The portion size is great for even a hungry man's appetite. I have yet to be able to finish a bowl...but I'm going to keep trying. I'm no quitter. Now, if you find yourself at Suttree's for their beer, you will not be disappointed. The bartenders pride themselves on their beer knowledge and are eager to help you find an ale that floats your boat, even if that beer is root beer. Be warned, if you're not a huge beer fan to keep your comments to yourself. The bartenders can be a little snarky. The crowd here seems to vary night to night. Older, younger, hipster, hipstercrite...Suttree's appeals to all. Keep an eye on their calendar, you may find yourself on a food truck menu take over night, or they could be showing the game on their giant TV in the back, or on trivia night, or on live music night. The restaurant bar is a bit of a surprise. While it looks like and is a college beer bar, the menu dues not contain a single nacho but rather all ramen and bahmi sandwiches. We had both the sandwiches royale with cheese, made to be like a hamburger which I did not like, and a buns of squeal, a more traditional take that was rich but not too spicy. Matt's ramen was our noodle choice and it came loaded with topping and had a deep smoky flavor with a hint of spice. Huge unusual beer menu and a full fledged arcade next door makes this a great place to spend an afternoon. My new favorite go to bar for a late night drink. Their taps are always rotating and their food menu seems to be growing. Ramen is now on the menu and I am very interested in trying since Knoxville probably does not have a big ramen culture. If you're into drinking champers (aka sparkling wine, aka bubbly) try the Julian hard cider. It's quite nice and an on point recommendation from the bartender. Higher percentage of ABV beers can be found here and the staff knows their stuff. From what I hear, it looks like they had a face lift on the inside and reorganized the interior. read more

Food: We didn't eat but they serve the Ramen soup that you get at the Chinese grocery. Beers are pretty expensive and only one lager on tap. I've had bartenders who remember what I drink and have another sitting in front of me when the current beer gets low. They may have to pour one out, but more often than not, it's an extra sale.
