On a busy day on Christmas Eve Eve, Sara and I strolled into Suttree's High Gravity Tavern for a drink and a snack. It's located right across the street from Mast General Store, and we were excited to see a new watering hole on Gay Street. The interior is plainly decorated but has a really cool wooden bench that extends the length of the half of the building and has tables pulled up to it with barstools opposite it. Really cool! The bartenders weren't friendly at all, but we sat down and ordered drinks and a snack anyway. They do have an excellent selection of draft beer- the Kentucky bourbon barrel ale was extremely tasty! I ordered the pretzels & beer cheese, which was horrible... it was velveeta cheese, beer, and way too much mustard seeds that was nuked far too long in the microwave, served with grocery store pretzel chips & Santitas tortilla chips. Yuck! The other food looked kind of along the same lines- some thrown together snacks just to appease the state food/alcohol laws. All in all, I'd maybe come back here for a draft beer but the food/snacks were horrible and the service wasn't much better. read more

Went in tonight and walked up to the bar, place was semi busy but there was a seat open. The bartender, (middle aged man with glasses) was painfully rude. As he was directly in front of me I politely asked for a food menu and he didn't make eye contact with me.. waited.. then grabbed a menu and slammed it on the bar top in front of me. Ate here while in town with some coworkers. We were looking for a place to grab a few drinks and play some Golden Tee, this place delivered. The staff were nice, even though the place was packed. The Golden Tee machine was in very good condition, which is always a nice plus. We were amazed at the amount of games they had here! So fun! I like that the two bars are connected but separated. The bar is really creative and lights up, most of the games are pretty cheap. This is more of a beer place, so don't expect a nice cocktail menu. The staff have always been nice each time we are there, and usually pretty knowledgeable about the different types. While it's not a kids place, they've been nothing but welcoming to my 7 year old who likes to play the games, just as long as we come in early before the night time drinking begins. So if you're reading this parents, don't be a jerk and bring your kid to the bar at night while it's a busier time, stick to earlier if you're going to do it. This is an awesome, dive-ish bar located in the heart of downtown Knoxville on Gay Street. Awesome selection of craft beer on draft, with two different bars to order from. Lots of bar and high-top seating available. Staff were friendly for the most part, and knowledgeable about their selections. But have I mentioned the arcade? This place has an arcade! Huge selection of old-school arcade games (think Ms. Pacman, pinball, skee-ball, Crazy Taxi, etc.). Most were only 25 - 50 cents to play. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and there were plenty of games to go around. We didn't have anything to eat, so can't comment on that! But seriously, if you're in the area, try Suttree's! I've been here several times, and the service has never been great. This is easy to forgive when they're busy, however the last time I was here the lack of consideration was unbelievable. There were only half a dozen patrons in the bar, and I was sitting at the bar, facing the taps. We sat for about five minutes while the bar tender talked to his buddy at the end of the bar towards the kitchen area. We stared. And we stared some more. And we kept staring. He finally approached us. I got the distinct feeling he found waiting on us to be a nuisance. He got our beers, opened our tab and went back to his conversation. When my first beer was empty, it sat in front of me for approximately 10 minutes. Again, I will remind you, I was one of 3-4 people at the bar, with another 2-3 people in the entire place. We again stared at him. And we stared more. And more. Finally another bartender who appeared to have just begun his shift saw me and asked if I wanted a beer. "I WOULD LOVE A BEER!" I announced, making very little attempt to hide my annoyance with the situation. He looked apologetic and gave me my second beer. He then began cleaning the windows while his coworker remained in his conversation with his buddy. By the time my second beer sat in front of me empty, with my bartender still steadfastly ignoring me, I was ready to pay and leave. This may prove to be the final straw for me, as the time before this I was at Suttree's for my birthday, and they did not honor my free birthday beer. You can be put on a mailing list so that they email you and offer you a free pint for your birthday. When I went in for this and a meal, the bartender asked for my ID to prove it was my birthday. I complied. Approximately 10 minutes later we decided to leave. Upon tabbing out, the beer was charged to me. Great beer is awesome. Bad service is memorable. Doubt I'll be back. read more

As a craft beer lover, this place already garnishes my respect for their selection. The taps turnover regularly, and the variety is usually excellent (although occasionally leaning too heavily towards IPAs). This is probably the best selection of high gravity beers on tap in this area. The food is very good, and the staff friendly. The atmosphere is fairly dark and stereotypically bar-like. Good menu with a bunch of options. It's not a huge menu but you have 10-15 items to choose from. Great place to hang out and play some games. I am a mostly non-beer drinker but I enjoy Suttree's. For lots of reasons that likely have already been stated here. It is always quiet here, which is very important for me. They occasionally have a group of people playing their guitars, fiddle and what not but the atmosphere is still very sustainable for meaningful conversations. As a mostly non-beer drinker and thus a poor judge of good beer, I can only say that they seem to have a nice variety of beer on their menu. My friends all really like this place and is always a popular destination for hanging out. They carry at least one cider (which I drink) and they have started to regularly have a lambic on their menu (which I also enjoy). I know they have a rotating tap menu and have (mostly?) craft beer. I also tried their ramen recently and it was delicious!! They also have a variety of options on their menu, sourced from one of my favorite places (Holly's Eventful Dining). The staff has always been nice and the patio is pet friendly. What's not to like? read more

Went here for a date. We got ramen and some Pinot Noir. It has a great atmosphere and the food is awesome. They have arcade games and 2 bars (one you get your food at and one you can use while you play the games). The bartenders are very friendly and fun! You can even sample some of their drafts if you've never had draft beer before. My date and I will definitely return soon. But we wont be getting the wine (it comes in a can and it's VERY strong). They recommend a sake to go with your ramen and I'll probably take their advice. All in all: affordable, fun atmosphere, and nice staff. read more

I have only been to Knoxville a few times and I know that it is a college town but this place felt a little more like home. Coming from Asheville, I can be a total beer snob and this place delivered with flying colors! They had a large selection of not only high gravity beers, but all styles of beers and a full bar. It's a little divey but not gross. The bartenders were very knowledgeable about what was on tap and were very helpful during our process of selecting a beer that we would have enjoyed. They even had some local Asheville brews on tap which of course, warmed my Asheville-loving heart. The late night crowd was a little rowdy... Someone fell and there was some "woo-ing" from frat boys but aside from that, it was chill and not crowded. We went on a Friday night and I was assured that the crowd on a weeknight is much more pleasurable. I didn't eat any of their food and in fact, I wasn't aware that they even had a food menu. Maybe they don't have a late night menu, maybe it wasn't presented to us. I am not sure. Apparently, there will be an arcade opening up inside the building and will be connected to the bar which will be great! Oh Suttree's, you are never a disappoint. With the ever changing craft beer available you always have me deciding between five different beers. In turn, I stay to try each one without disappointment. The atmosphere and interior of Suttree's is rustic and inviting to try all the beers you've seen in craft beer stores, but had not enough money to buy six cases. They also serve small plates, I have enjoyed a 3 sampler with hummus and dip and loved it! Also try to stop by when in Knoxville. My husband and I tried the Black Shin Bowl and Matt's Spicy Ramen. Very flavorful broths! The ramen noodles are disappointing and are obviously he cheap Maruchan kind. That was sad, but the broth, meat, egg and pickled carrots made up for it! If I could give them just one piece of advice, I'd say...spend the extra $$ on fresh noodles! As someone who LOVES beer, I'll have to say Suttrees is one of my favorite bars in Knoxville in terms of beer selection. The bartenders definitely know their shit without coming off as condescending. Pretty good menu as well. The pork belly sliders (buns of squeal) and the Ramen bowls are awesome. It can get a bit stuffy and crowded at times, but that's to be expected.
