We were anxious to try out the new Swedish Hill since we liked their pastries and bread so much on the trial days. We went on Saturday for lunch and it was a clusterf^&* So, you take a number and that means that you have to stand right in front of the door because that is the only place where you can see what number they are on. It was so loud that we could not hear the numbers being called. Everyone is standing in front of the door which defeats the whole purpose of taking a number to avoid crowding. The waiters are trying to get through with food and they have to use the same doors where everyone is standing. Then after your number is called, you order and then have to move to a different area to stand in line for the cash register to pay. What??? Please put a number display in a different place to clear the door. The food was ok but a bit pricey for the portion size. We ordered the radishes with French butter and I asked if they came with bread. The server told me "no", it is a French dish. I know it is not the server's fault because he is just repeating what he was told to say. But...who in the hell wants to eat pure butter by itself? I grew up in France and my husband is French and one of my favorite dishes in France is baguette with butter and radishes and sea salt. I have never been to a French restaurant that does not have bread on the table. I asked for a side order of toast but that should come with it. read more

On the one hand, I was a fan of the old Sweetish Hill. On the other, I really love the MMH's other restaurants (those that I've gone to). So I was excited to try out the reborn SH. I had the sausage plate with broccoli rabe. The food was delicious. However: $16 is way too much to pay for the level of service. You order at the counter: fine. Somebody runs the plate over to you. Also fine. But that's it: nobody checks to see how things are. If you want a coffee, you have to go to the bar to order it, stand in line, and once it's ordered it goes in line with all the take out coffees. "Sit down and we'll call your name," said the guy behind the bar--but I was sitting on an inside banquette, am middle-aged, and didn't particularly want to clamber in and out, so I waited. When my latte was done, it was served in a circular glass cup--sort of like a votive candle holder, but bigger--without any handle or any saucer. It looked lovely & is no doubt highly instgrammable, but I then had to walk a hot brimming coffee across the restaurant, and it was unpleasant to drink from. The guys behind the counter seemed impatient. As far as I can tell the only argument for the low level of service is because the place used to be a bakery that served a small amount of cooked food. It is now a full-fledged restaurant with a full bar and prices to match. It should offer service at that level. read more

My wife picked up a cake here yesterday. We usually LOVE everything here, but the cake was awful. It was small chocolate cake with white buttercream icing. The cake layers were thick, dry, and flavorless and the buttercream frosting was awful. It was a grocery store quality cake. We were all perplexed how it came from Swedish Hill. read more

Nostalgia drove me there (I grew up in Austin & later moved to Berlin) but I should have read the reviews first. The cappuccino had an odd, pungent taste (reminiscent of those weirdly flavored brands urged upon you in Maui or wherever) but most mortifying was the banana cream pie, something I've missed and never found on the Continent, but at über-Sweetish Hill was a thick mound of cream so overpowering that the banana was undetectable -- a blasphemy. read more

Came here for happy hour on a Tuesday and my husband and I split the smoked fish board which was half off. Being from Seattle I have a pretty high standard for salmon. But wow!!! This board was absolutely delicious. It was plenty of food for two people for dinner. I especially liked the olive tapenade and caper spread that came on the board. This is a little late but I had to give a big shout out to Swedish Hill for coming through for me and my sister's weird solo Covid Thanksgiving this year! First - the pickup process at the restaurant was very organized and quick. Perfect. Then the food was really spectacular. We are still talking about the sweet potato casserole. Amazing! We had a pretty pathetic first time experience today at Sweetish Hill Bakery om W. 6th. Stood in line for 20 minutes to order two bagels to go. Was told they were out of our first choice, so we chose our second. Two bagels and an iced tea, that was it. We paid and then we told to stand by the bathrooms (!) to wait for our order to be called. We watched, and waited. For another 15 minutes until the girl running the takeouts told us they were completely out of bagels. All flavors. Having spent 35 minutes and coming up empty handed was disappointing, but we just asked for a refund and that was simple. But since they had handed us the tea, when they refunded our card, they only credited the bagels rather than giving a shit that we had waited all this time and they had done nothing to accommodate us. What lousy customer service. And for first timers, we won't ever return since they were so inconsiderate of our time and their error. read more

My last visit to the Swedish Hill was a total disaster. Three of us ordered the pastrami sandwiches. One as described on the menu and two just pastrami, bread and mustard. The sandwiches we received consisted of two slices of bead and so few slices of pastrami that some places there was only one slice of pastrami!!! WHERE IS THE BEEF??? The waiter even agreed with us that the portion of pastrami was very skimpy and indicated to us that usually it is stuffed with other stuff (sauerkraut and beets) as indicated on the menu. Is that a pastrami sandwich? Bread, sauerkraut, beets and few slices of pastrami at $18. The waiter was kind enough to bring us additional pastrami on the side. Thank you. Beautiful place.... But that's honestly they have going for themselves. All the low rating reviews that you are reading about Swedish Hill, is 100% and completely true. The first thing I noticed was the rude ginger haired hostess. She Looked unwelcoming and did not say one word to us. But was totally fine with the folks in front and behind us. Secondly, the food is overpriced for what it is. I understand the whole "if you can't afford it, don't come here" but seriously some of these sandwiches shouldn't be priced at $15 when it is utter garbage. I don't mind spending money if the food is good. Service is ridiculous. Honestly, there is a lot more stuff I could say about this place however it wouldn't be appropriate for this platform. Food is good, many of the people who work there are very rude and short with you. No one is accommodating if anything on the order needs to be slightly edited. I have seen the hostesses not help people open the door who need help, whether they be elderly or have strollers. They just sit there and watch them struggle. I have had to get up and open the door for someone who needed it because the hostesses (there were more than one just standing there) would not. They have been one of the only restaurants in Austin where the employees are consistently unfriendly. read more

Arrive. Take a ticket and wait until your number is called. Then place your order. Then move to the cash register to 'check out', then you get a number to display so they can bring your food. They also take your name so you can go and stand near the drinks bar and wait until they call your name. Then go find a table and wait for a server to come find you with your food. My office was so excited to have this spot open up since we're always looking for new lunchtime options. I've now gone a few different times- once for lunch, a couple coffee breaks, and breakfast. Everything I've tried so far I've enjoyed. The egg salad BLT was AWESOME! I couldn't believe how could it tasted. The bacon was thick, it wasn't overly packed with egg salad, a good amount of arugula for crunch, and green tomatoes. The bread was also fantastic. I enjoyed the pickled veggies served on the side too, the carrots specifically. I had the bread and butter ice cream too, and I was fantastic. Sweet and salty, with an almost caramel flavor, incredible. The waffle cone was delicious as well. I had a bagel there for breakfast, and it was delicious. Super crispy on too, chewy in the middle, and yummy cream cheese. They also have great cold brew. I can agree that it is a little bit pricey to me, but it's definitely a treat. My wife and I visited this place for the first time recommended by the Austin resident. When we got to the place, we approached the wait staff outside the restaurant. I requested her table for two. She asked, do you have a reservation, I said no. She said well there is no open table till 8pm, and it was only 5pm. I asked can we go inside an order some pastries or cake and coffee to go? She said fine. (Note: there were plenty of table outside, which she said it's reserved). We got inside , no one greeted, no one cared, finally we asked the cashier can we order to go? She said very unenthusiastically, ok. We noticed at least 80% of the tables were open. I asked her can we sit and eat, she said, I can't take your order but I will have a wait staff sent to your table. We waited few minutes, no one showed up. Then a waitress brings water and said I will bring the dessert menu, we waited again, no response. Manager was passing by I asked him, he brought the menu and we again waited for over 5 minutes no response. We got up and asked the cashier to place an Oder for us. We sat down and she brought us our order. No apologies. Manager stops by, I told him how rude you all are, it seems like you do not wants us in your restaurant. We are not welcomed . (We were the only non white people in the restaurant). Seemed like they cater to Whites only or Whites preferred. Manager did apologize to us for their behavior but apology is not enough, They need to do a better job training their staff. Will never go there again nor I recommend to go if you are non white. Ordered for takeout a double meat double cheese pastrami sandwich and the charcuterie. Pastrami was thick cut, so this was a gigantic sandwich, much like the kind you get from Katz or Carnegie, the famous delis in NYC. So yes, I got what I wanted. The charcuterie/cheese board was good size with a nice variety of meats and cheeses. I deducted 1 star because online ordering was a little confusing. But overall, I enjoyed the food. read more

I got two poppy seed bagels, an amazing, buttery Kouign Amann, and two cookies for under 15 dollars. They were all delicious. That said, I have some complaints. The cafe is very crowded, even more so because it was a rainy day and the wooden tables outside were soaked. That made it really hard to get a seat. Ordering was weird because there were three different places for pastries, lunch, and drinks, and you have to stand in line, which is fine, but it's three different places. As I said, the food was terrific. I just ordered the Kouign Amann (pronounced "Queen Am-ahn") because I saw it on the Great British Bake-off. But it was probably one of the best pastries I've ever had. I just don't get why, when someone gets up to go to the bathroom, they TAKE AWAY YOUR FOOD. Why? Super cute spot! Both patio and inside are so inviting, patio was cool enough to relieve us from the heat. We got the bagel and fish sampler, asparagus and gruyere quiche, and butter croissant for a quick pre-lunch snack and they were all yummy. Too bad we had lunch reservations but the sandwiches looked amazing. If I lived in Austin, I would probably make this a regular visit.
