Cherry pistachio croissant, babason, and knafe
    Katherine D.

I enjoyed everything I tried during my first visit to Matok. Warning that the parking lot is kind of small, so it might be hard to find a spot during busy times on the weekend. The workers who helped me were very nice, and there are a few places to sit inside. I tried the egg sandwich, the cherry pistachio croissant, the babason, and knafe. My favorite was the babason. The filling inside is delicious. The croissant was flakey, buttery, and the cherry pistachio was a great combination. The only item I'd skip next time is the egg sandwich because I found it slightly bland. The worker told me there was some mustard in it but I could not taste any. Not sure if they forgot it or she was mistaken. Otherwise, everything else was great, and I look forward to trying more of their pastries.

Matok is a small bakery tucked away on south Lamar. First, the actual food. I ordered what they had available. A cherry pistachio croissant and a cardamom vanilla filled bread. In regard, to the cherry pistachio croissant, the layers and cream on the inside were delicious! I absolutely loved the filling and it was not too sweet or underwhelming, and the layers were croissant perfection. I have the same comment toward the cardamom vanilla filled bread. I must say this spot does a great job balancing flavor with savory. As for the service, the staff was aware and had a well thought out approach to running low on their goodies. I went in the middle of the day so I did not get a wide selection, as they had run out. Even so, the staff still informed us when the next round of bread was coming. They took orders prior and wrote each name down along with our requests. They set aside these orders and promptly called the respective individuals when the bread was ready. All that said, one thing I think they should be mindful of are the other guests (respectfully). I wanted to stay and try the bread in-person, but there was actually someone with two non service dogs that were in the restaurant. I love dogs, but if a customer has two dogs barking at one another and fighting in a vicinity that sells food, I think the establishment should request that the individual remove their dogs. Moreover, a person could be allergic and for such a tiny spot this scenario was not ideal. These were two large dogs fighting, barking (I stayed for about 15 minutes) no one said anything. I know this violates a health code so I really hope this establishment is more aware for future customers.

I am so happy for the folks of Matok. Operating out of their home garage until opening on South Lamar must be such an incredible feeling and it shows in the delicate art of their pastries. Get. One. Of. Everything. Trust me. The cherry pistachio croissant is almost difficult to eat -- so beautifully done and tastes outrageously good. The knafe is also wonderful. But the star of the show (at least for me) is their five seed sourdough loaf. Do not miss it. So soft and nutty and to die for (no pics of it because it's too good and doesn't last long enough for photos). Parking is available but minimal so come early. Or try to catch them when their midday bake is available.

The flavor of the knafe was on point however the knafe itself was stale as well as the pastry shell, no light crisp crunch effect that knafe should have. The savory options: zaatar and labneh was very dry and the ham and cheese croissant straight up had a chunk of not melted yellow cheese and luncheon meat. A little underwhelming compared to other area bakeries. Staff was pleasant, clean store, limited seating.

Shout out to the pastry chef, Matok is truly a gem and we are better for it. I tried their cherry pistachio croissants, knafe an chocolate sourdough cookie. Cherry pistachios croissant is my fav out of all 3. It's nutty, tangy, creamy and crispy all in one bite. Knafe has hint of floral note from rose water and orange blossom syrup. It's unique and fun to try. Chocolate sourdough cookie resembles more of a biscuit than cookie, still enjoyable but not if you're craving crumbling cookie texture.

Stopped by here a few days after they opened and they were already sold out of the pistachio croissant! Oh well, next time. I did really enjoy the game and cheese croissant, and the other pastry pictured in my review. The flakiness is perfect, I can only imagine how the more typical croissants taste! My only qualm is the price! Service was friendly and quick when I got there around 730am on a weekend. There is some seating inside though it's fairly small. Absolutely would drive out of my way if looking for quality baked treats!

This place was pretty good although prices were a little high for the quantity. Each pastry was around $8-$9. I enjoyed all of them but they weren't necessarily that unique to cost that much. They were all aesthetically pleasing though. I liked the texture of the croissant and how crispy it was. The pistachio croissant was great. Not too sweet. The ham and cheese pastry was decent, but nothing memorable. My friend got a few other items and one of the pies were refreshing (I forgot what was in it, maybe pear?). The space and small and cozy. Staff were very sweet and friendly.

The hype is real. We finally have a proper bakery in Austin. We ordered the assorted box (chocolate, ham and cheese, pistachio and cherry) and they were all soo good. The sweet croissants were not too sweet and it didnt taste heavy at all. Usually when i have a croissant i feel gross afterwards lol. The lightness of their baked goods reminded me of the pastries i had in Paris. The individual chocolate dessert was also a real treat. Pro tip: order a day or two ahead for pick up! When we walked in to the store to pick up our order there were a lot of people hanging around waiting for their next batch of pastries to come out because they were sold out at the time. Will definitely be ordering from here again!!

Omg I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! Parking is very very tight so beware! When we walked in, there was a 15 minute wait for one of the pastries and we didn't mind the wait. We ordered our coffees to sip on & sat outside! Food: I had a vanilla latte, which was delicious. ~ There was a sample of the baguette! OMG THIS WAS SO FREAKING GOOD. PERFECT. You didn't need butter or anything with it. It was so crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside without feeling dry. ~ The chocolate chip strawberry scone was delicious. It reminded me of London's scones with how luscious it tasted. ~ My family tried the cherry pistachio croissant & they said it was one of the best pastries in Austin. Service: SO friendly!!! The worker in the front was so friendly and fun. She was also a big fan of the pastries and hyped them up so well. Ambiance: Very cute and very small! Not lots of seating either.

At long last, this sweetheart Matok has found a home on South Lamar where we can find the most exquisite Parisian pastries refined by 2 decades of Michal's apprenticeship and relentless attention to perfection. Atmosphere is buzzing just like they deserve, and the staff is excited to make recommendations. They are works of art as much as they are delightful to enjoy, a sweet retreat as far away as next door, taking my palate overseas and back home again. Although closed on Monday/Tuesday, I was able to enjoy a limited Pear Tart over the weekend - firm, but delicate crust with a dense but crumbly marzipan center set with razor-sliced orchard fresh pears. We should all be so lucky, every once in a while...

Overdue review! Really impressed with the quality of the pastries. Each one was better than the last, but my personal favorite was the croissant (cherry with pistachio filling). Did not eat them all at once and they all kept their quality very well! Ordered online and pickup at their house, instructions were easy to follow and was able to pick up a little earlier than my designated window for pickup. Highly recommended if you're looking for unique and tasty pastries!

It's more visually appealing than it tasted!! After looking at social media people raving about this place, and looking at the pictures, my expectation was too high. Last Sunday me n two other friends drove to this place in the afternoon, everything was out, other than few cherry pistachio croissants, but already there were few people in line for them, so couldn't get anything. Today was in the area for brunch with the family stopped by around 11:30ish, they had only few cherry pistachios croissants, couple of scones, one or two challah and GF orange cake. Got two cherry pistachios croissants, it's $16 + tax + tip. Croissants were good but nothing special than what you get in any coffee shop or Whole Foods, when you just taste croissants part. You could see cherry layer, but you don't taste cherry in the layers, but you taste cherry with the pistachio cream inside, as they had added couple of them with pistachio cream. So overall for the price and how fast they get sold out, and how far away it is for me, I don't think so I'll go back just to go to the bakery, but if I'm in the area will stop by to try other stuff may be.

Wow! These pastries are beautiful and delicious! I learned at my mid afternoon stop last week that I should get there much earlier in the day. Last week, my only choices were between plain croissants and a loaf of bread. The plain croissant was so good, but I still wanted to try the sweet treats. This week, I got there earlier and had my choice of several beautiful pastries (although some were sold out). Check it out, but go in the morning!

I love the green soft chairs, the tables, and the chef statue greeting you as you pull in front of the building. He's right there in the window. The bistro honestly takes your breath away. I love it! So in the last two weeks, I've been back exactly four times. My first introduction was the Croissant Scramble with chicken and veggies inside, with the Arnold Palmer. My friend got the Croissant Scramble with brisket. The presentation of the croissants when brought to the table blew me away. It was wrapped up in the cutest paper with the ends twisted. The topic of conversation was how good the croissants were. Before we left, we ordered some delicious cookies. The chocolate chips were yummy. So I went the following day and grabbed some pastries! One in particular was the Pecan Bar. The following week, another friend and I stopped in for the Chicken Pesto Omelet. I like that the fire-roasted bell peppers and onions are cooked, if that's the right word. But l have to tell you, the Mexican Hot Chocolate drink brings on the flavor, as does the ice-cold Mocha. Of course, we got the Pecan Bar for dessert. So yes, I went back yesterday for the Almond Croissant. I know, I know!

When I arrived, I was told the cake wasn't ready and was asked if I could come back the next morning--which obviously didn't work given the timing of the event. As a substitute, they offered me a pre-made cake from their display case and assured me it was chocolate like I originally ordered, just with a chocolate mousse filling. They refunded me $15 to account for the difference, and I felt pressured to accept since I needed something for the dinner that night. Unfortunately, the situation got worse from there. When we cut into the cake, it turned out to be confetti--not chocolate. Then, when we tried to eat it, it was clearly stale, dry, and inedible. No one touched it after the first bites. It completely missed the mark for what was supposed to be a special moment. What's especially frustrating is that I ordered from them last year for the same occasion, and everything went perfectly--that's why I trusted them again. This time, however, it was a complete letdown from start to finish. When I called the next day to request a refund, I asked to speak with a manager but was told that wasn't possible. Instead, I was told I would only be offered a partial refund because I accepted the replacement cake. I understand that mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability and quality here was really disappointing--especially for something as important as a birthday celebration.
