The place is great food wise but the service and seating expectations are just ridiculous. Do not come here if it's peak busy time. I would think your experience would be great when this place is empty. Staff was great at the register but the waitress was a bit disgruntled. You really need to figure out the seating arrangements on your own because no one explains how it works and god forbid it's cold outside ...don't even bother because you will be stuck in the cold waiting for your table for perhaps an hour. Oh my gosh the food, the hipster vibe, the Swiss alternative music that was playing everything was so so good!! I usually don't wait for food... But I decided to this time and I don't regret it. Let me start with the awesome fat that you can drink coffee specifically made for Sweedeeedee while waiting. And the wait.... It will be at least 45 minutes to an hour. When you get your food it will all be good and will leave you full but not bloated full. There is a difference, and a important one at that. There is also very few vegan friendly things here which I find incredibly brace of them and exciting given there location and crowd. There brioche toast is preheats the best bread o have ever eaten. I repeat it is the best bread I have ever eaten. Being paleo... When I cheat I want good stuff. This is very good stuff!! So my recommendation... Get the breakfast plate, drink the coffee with half and half and honey water, and finally get a piece of the honey pie to go and eat it within a hour after. You won't regret anything. They no longer do the breakfast burrito! Happens all the time on Yelp where I see something that I set my heart on and when I show up, the establishment no longer has the item. Just went to Sweedeedee because the PCC Cascade cafe was unexpectedly closed. I searched yelp for something tasty nearby and found the Sweedeedee Breakfast Burrito. The place is very cute and was moderately crowded (which I think is a good sign!) But when I ordered a burrito to go, the server told me that they haven't been doing it for months and directed me to a post on the wall that said so. I said "ok I'll check it out" and then walked right out the front door. Haha I'm not mad but I gotta go find a burrito because my heart wants what it wants :) I always think about what I would do if I had a restaurant. Something to definitely be aware of is what your menu looks like on the internet. Postmates is another example of something that regularly has menus that are different from what the restaurant actually offers. As a restaurant owner, I think the good move is to be aware of those discrepancies and have a good substitute prepared for people who come in looking for it. Also get on yelp and change it! I'll keep Sweedeedee in mind for the future, but right now I'm super hungry (therefore irrational), so when I hear "we stopped doing that months ago, it says so right there on the wall" I gotta go somewhere else! Oh my goodness!! The Good Buddy salad was some of the best food that I've eaten, in a restaurant, in quite a bit of time. Beautifully presented, layers of flavor that worked together beautifully. The place was packed, and obviously for good reason. The breakfast sandwiches of my friends looked incredibly tasty. The daily soup was raved about & the French Press with steamed milk was awesome. I needed a break from American style breakfasts... which are fine, but at home my happy place is a place like this - so why not on holidays!? I love Sweedeedee's attention to detail. There's always great records playing, and the space is super calming. I've noticed they don't use disposable napkins or anything plastic-- they stick with ceramic, wood, metal utensils. Sweedeedee is a really cosy brunch place with a predominantly hipster clientele (at least that was when i was there this morning), and it is a blink and miss kinda place but I am glad we found it! They spin records, have pretty-looking cakes and pastries, and serve pretty decent brunch dishes! It's evident lots effort went into the decor of the place, with shelves of neatly arranged jars and utensils, wooden touches and specials scribbled on a huge paper roll, for ease of refresh. We had the breakfast burrito (scrambled eggs, avocado, fried potato, lettuce and guacamole) and potato plate (potatoes, fried egg and smoked trout)... both packed with goodness and weren't too over the top (nor too oily). However, the wait time was a bit of a gripe so it won't be an ideal place if you're in a bit of a rush. Also, there is the protocol of ordering before being allocated seats, which doesn't work well for everyone. Last night my group shared roasted carrots, borlotti beans, cucumbers with sheep cheese, little gem lettuces, spicy rigatoni, cloudy orange wine and a slice of the best chocolate cake I have ever had in my whole life. Wow! All their desserts and pastries are shockingly good. Came here for brunch with my cousin and some friends. It's a cool spot. Not a lot of seating so they don't seat you until they're room. Then they make your food. You do get your drinks ahead of time, unless you order hot tea. To be honest though, I don't see myself coming back. The have practically no vegan options and I had to get the vegetable sandwich with the egg and aoli sauce held. It was tasty but literally the only thing I could eat. And I'm not totally sure the bread was vegan. The group I came in with really enjoyed their meals though. Bacon, eggs, and lots of homemade bread. So, not really my kind of joint. I've never come across beans I didn't like, so this was a first! From what I've seen this isn't exclusive to this dish, they even put olive oil on their YOGURT of all things!!! Yelp convinced me to come here from a nice photo but I left feeling pretty meh. The breakfast plate has some bacon, an egg, a molasses french toast slice (X2), some jam and a pile of greens. There were also a few small pieces of honeydew(?) and a triangle of hard cheese. The toast should have something besides the jam imho. Maybe a little syrup, some whipped butter? Texture of the bread was good, but the flavor was a bit subtle for such huge pieces of bread to be featured. The bacon and egg were good. But what's with the pile of greens? It's raw, which I prefer over a steaming pile of limp forest green. There's no dressing and I would characterize these greens as super fresh, probably very local and clean but highly bitter. Bitter in the way you'd want them to be an accent to a salad, not comprise the entire salad. No tomatoes, no cucumber, no carrot, no romaine, no cabbage. Just a cup of raw bitter greens. I tried mixing the egg with it, but it just lost the flavor of the egg against the bitter, tart greens. Maybe a creamy dressing would have cut the bitterness. I just don't get why they were on a breakfast plate, with no dressing or no other ingredients. Was I supposed to use the cheese hunk and...? I don't even know how to finish the sentence. We're not talking the long Portland brunch waits, we're talking STAFFING and OWNERSHIP. We're talking eye contact. We're talking accountability. We're talking communication. We're talking overall customer service. My last and final visit to Sweedee's was Saturday 3/19 at 1:20pm. We ordered 2 BLBs (one with trout, one with bacon, both w added avocado). We were informed that the wait would be about 20-25min for the food, so we ordered 2 mimosas and sat outside enjoying the sunny afternoon. Around min 25 we noticed many patrons arriving after us began getting their food with ours no where in sight. Around minute 35 I inquired about our order at the counter and was told its "coming right up". 18 min later we walked out with our 2 sandwiches for a total wait time of 48 min. 1. Sweedee's is a small joint. 20 tables, tops. EVERY single table was full when we arrived... there's a wait for a take-out order, alright...we're down...we'll enjoy a mimosa while we wait. 2. At the 35 min mark when I begin lingering near your register (before inquiring with the staff), why wasn't the staff aware of who was in the dining room, how long they've been there and reading the crowd knowing that a standing patron is PROBABLY waiting on an order. 3. Why was my ticket in your kitchen for 45+ min and no one made an effort to touch base with us? Had you even acknowledged your crap service, it would have made up for the 48 min wait for 2 sandwiches. - Which by the way were stone cold!! 4. Why was it acceptable to hand me an order with a 48 min wait with NO explanation, apology or accountability of the mistake? Poor form Sweedee's. read more

Having been to Sweedeedee twice now, I have confirmed to myself that the first time was not a fluke - this place has some kind of magic to it. At least to me and the legions of others who have fallen under its spell. Maybe it's the fact that when I walked in this morning, Neil Young's "Harvest" LP was on the turntable (yes, it's Portland, where turntables and vinyl still exists). There's a communal coffee urn filled with coffee from Extracto Roasters, and the pastry case is sooo tempting that you just have to order something to go, even though you came here for one of the incredible breakfast entrees. The board above the order counter lists the local farms from which the produce comes, at the very top, as a tribute and to highlight the importance of the ingredients. My wife had the blueberry corncakes, and I had the seasonal "porridge" dish, which this time around featured yellow lentils, as well as the best available veggies, and a 7-minute egg. It was all outstanding. For the second time, I left Sweedeedee in an altered state, still under its spell. BTW, if you're not into standing in line and waiting, just arrive before 830 or so; we did on the second visit and, even on a Saturday, we were able to order immediately and sit at an open table. I've been to Sweedeedee a couple times before and the food has been fantastic - and the wait to get a table long but worth it. However, this time I had a very negative experience. I called in a lunch order and the staff said the food would be ready to pick up in 20 mins. I get to the restaurant in 30 mins and the staff tells me it'll be just a few mins. 10 minutes later a different staff member checks in with me and tells me that the food won't be ready for another 40 minutes (or 70 mins after I ordered). Mind you, the only thing I ordered was an egg sandwich. The staff member said that she would give me a free baked good if I waited for the food (an extra 50 mins from when it was promised) or a refund for the food I purchased. When I asked for a refund of the food I paid for and the tip I provided, she scoffed when I asked for the refund of the tip which they rightly did not deserve. Like I was the jerk here. Their customer service needs a lot of improvement. I would have been totally okay with waiting an hour for my food if they told me straight up that the food would take that long to make. I was late to a meeting I had at work because they broke their promise of having the food ready twice - over the phone when they said 20 mins and then in person when I was told the food would be ready in a few minutes. I was greatly dissatisfied that they only offered me a refund or a small baked good for $2 for their constant mistakes. They failed to deliver and I am very disappointed with how they tried to "fix" the situation. Thus, I plan to avoid coming here again - there are so many restaurants in Portland to try and I'm confident they have far superior customer service than this place. It was clear I wasn't with them but the counter girl didn't ask if I wanted to put my order in while they chose. She just stood there. Then when the group finished their order and I got to the counter the girl just walked away. No "I'll be back" or "I'll be right with you" or even "hello." Just turned and walked away. ??? But then she was gone for about five minutes. I could see she was busy circling on tables and talking to the kitchen, I understand she has multiple jobs and needs to keep tabs on what is in stock and turnovers and what not, but maybe she could communicate? "Hi! Welcome! I'll just be right back!" or maybe "Hello, these are our specials written behind me, while you ponder I'm going to do a quick check in with my staff and customers." Pretty much anything besides disappearing and then coming back with a blank stare and "do you know what you want?" Really? I've been standing here for quarter of an hour now (not hyperbole) yes, I'm ready to order. The only reason I didn't leave was that I was meeting a friend who had already ordered. Well. Part of me thinks I shouldn't breathe a word about this place, because it feels like our neighborhood's most beloved secret. But I'm sure the reviews will start to come in sooner or later, so here goes mine. This is a perfect café. Like, really. I could rhapsodize for pages. It could cure hangovers, or even heartbreaks. It feels like I dreamed it up. Everything is executed with delicacy and warmth. The food is beautifully prepared, simple, hearty, and homey. And I'm convinced that a prettier café does not exist. White walls, hardwood floors, and a bevy of houseplants make this feel like the kitchen of some guest cabin from an imagined summer. The music is turntable-borne and sleepy. It makes the sunlight seem warmer, the rain seem softer. SoundHound was unable to tell me what any of it was, so I assume it's local and/or too obscure. Which is, you know, kind of awesome. It would be a great place to sit and read with some coffee and toast, or work on some writing. Or just stuff yourself with good friends. Because the food! THE. FOOD. Both times we've eaten here, the boyfriend and I have swapped hushed expletives over the first few bites and then hurried home to call our parents and tell them about it afterwards. So far we've tried the potato plate (served with baked eggs, trout, and salsa verde!), the corncakes (with bacon and greens), the toast plate, and the breakfast plate. All were delicious. The bacon is perfect. The eggs are perfect. The syrups and preserves have all been lovely. I can't wait to try their sandwiches and goodies like honey cake served with peaches and cream. Yes. Really. You order at the counter, round up your own silverware and drinks (good coffee; icy pitchers of water, one with cucumber slices, the other with lemon), and buss your own table. This was a little confusing the first time we ate there because there were no "Pay Here" signs or anything, but now I think I actually prefer it that way. It's just easier to shell out the money when you're hungry and the air smells like plum pie and coffee. Despite this do-it-yourself dining style, you feel taken care of. This dream seems to be orchestrated by a team of burly baker menfolk and womenfolk with tattoos and pretty smiles who have been nothing but welcoming to us. They even sort of appraise you for a moment and then pick "your" coffee mug from a shelf behind the counter, which leaves you with a sort of cozy, oracular feeling. But there's more! Not only is the food delicious and the atmosphere dreamy, it's cheaper than Tasty & Sons and much quieter and prettier than Gravy. We've never had to wait for a table. Customers seem to circulate pretty regularly so that I've never seen it full or empty. Downsides? Eh. Not really, except due to its narrowness and quietude, it might not be the best place to bring a gaggle of kids. But that's about it. To sum it all up, we had breakfast there this morning and as lunchtime rolled around, the boyfriend and I joked about going back for sandwiches. This place is extremely overrated. My friend and I were visiting from Seattle and did a search for good brunch restaurants. Sweedeedee popped up and it looked pretty tasty. When we arrived, a sign instructed us to get in line to order food at the counter prior to sitting down. This line took 20 minutes to get through and there were only 6 people ahead of us in line. We had to track down menus, as none were available at the front. The employee taking orders at the counter was exceptionally slow and disorganized. When we finally reached the front of the line after 20 minutes of standing, she informed us it would be a 45 minute wait for food. Thanks.....Would have been nice to know 20 minutes ago. Also, you are asked to tip when you order! The hell? I'm tipping before anyone serves me and before I taste any food?? We waited for our table and after being seated, it was definitely more than 45 minutes before getting our food. The order was wrong (I had ordered a substitute avocado) and when I informed an employee, they remedied it by bringing me a sliced avocado, half of which was visibly black and spoiled. Our meals consisted of food most people could easily make at home (toast, a single slice of cheese, sliced semi-brown apples, lettuce with vinaigrette and a side of jelly) and save themselves $14. This place was inefficient and smacks of desperately obvious kitsch. Pros: - menu is simple and a nice combination of fresh (such as local, organic greens and pears) with traditional (two eggs over easy with local cheese); - open, light layout -- like a coffee shop* Cons: - menu has very few options, all of which are fairly insubstantial if you've come in hungry; - expect to wait: I walked in, ordered and sat at 8:15 on a non-holiday Fri morning. By the time I left at 8:50, there was a wait; - coffee was Stumptown -- a little surprising in a place working this hard to be hip, local and understated; *Bottom line: Sweedeedee comes across as a coffee shop with a slightly better food menu, rather than as a place that started with a blank sheet of paper, built a thoughtful menu, and then envisioned the environment to wrap around it. Could this place be any more damn adorable? It's like you walked into your hipster grandmas house, who just so happens to be able to out bake anyone on the block. I have never. Ever. Been disappointment. Nor have the number of guests I've brought here. I have tried a few sandwiches, the breakfast burrito and the cobb salad. All have knocked my socks off. I'm not easy to please when it comes to burritos I'll have you know. As far as burritos go they make a very fresh and very delightful breakfast burrito. Salads generally disappoint me, my inner fat kid just can't be shaken long enough to enjoy one when there is other, more caloric options available. This Cobb here is not, by any means dainty. They add some seriously portions of tender meat. Throw in some hard boiled eggs and avocado and you have yourself a salad you can feel fully satiated after. Now, lets talk about the anxiety. You place you order at the counter and then are left to pray to the brunch Gods that a table opens up before your food arrives. I have seen this style of ordering work out great at places like Por Que No where the food is cranking out at a pretty quick rate but here .... it's just a little bit more tricky then that. This place is tiny, adorable, but tiny. People have caught on, and show up in full force with rumbling bellies. This food is made is a lot of TLC, and it shows, but it is time consuming to make. This leaves people waiting around like hungry vultures to stalk diners. There is no formal line for people who have been waiting the longest so you are left to rely on the honors system. For me hanger eventually sets in and I start having strange thoughts like " If people who came after me takes that table, I'll punch them. end of story". Hey, I came here for brunch, not to B-slap someone what's going on here? Once you do snag a table it's hard to relax and enjoy while people who are waiting, under-stably, eyeball you. Oh, how I wish I had a much better experience at Sweedeedee. I had such high hopes because it's a cute space and it smelled wonderful when we walked in. You order at the counter before taking a seat, which can be hit-or-miss. After waiting for quite some time, two spaces at the bar opened up that we bolted for. There isn't really an area for waiting so you're awkwardly waiting in-between tables and the island where you get water/utensils/condiments/etc. There was a family of 4 that had gotten there long before us that waited for much, much longer--so I do suggest coming early or later if you're with a large group. After we got our seats, we waited for even longer. We noticed people who ordered after us getting their food so we inquired about our order. The girl behind the counter, whom we placed our order with, said our order was coming right up. Another 30 minutes passes and everyone who was seated except for us was eating. So we asked about our food again and it turns out she forgot to place our order... No apologies from her. She could have at least given us a free slice of pie that we had been sitting next to this entire time! When our food finally arrived, the server mentioned our wait but... No apologies from him either. The dishes we ordered were delicious though. Unfortunately, I don't know if it was so tasty because I was absolutely famished. I didn't have time to savour the food because I just inhaled everything. I'd really like to go back to give it another try... But we'll see. read more

Yum ! Good food and good service. It's crowded with a bit of a wait , but worth it for a small group. We waited for about an hour for a party of 2. Fortunately, they took our order when we arrived, so once we were seated, we didn't wait much longer. read more

I hate restaurants that mess with a good formula and this place is guilty of that. Been here three times, each time got the breakfast burrito and loved it. Went back today (October 30) and ordered the same thing. Today, it had onions, which I hate. This is not disclosed on the menu on the list of items in the burrito, nor was it on the burritos I got on previous visits. But even worse, they changed the salsa. It used to be a mouth watering red salsa but today it was a gross white salsa that tasted sour cream based. Hate sour cream. Why did you mess with a good thing? When I complained, the young lady just shrugged. And of course, like many other annoying establishments these days, you're supposed to tip before you've received any service. It's self service but the touch screen suggests 15, 20 or 25%. So I'm supposed to tip as though I'm at a sit down restaurant and then go get my own coffee? No. read more

Many things about this place were bad. Cleanliness is one. I expect the utensils, cups, plates to be clean. If you don't care about that, you might go ahead and try them. I expect to have napkins, not some dirt clothes to wipe my hands and mouth. Portions are another thing that don't add up. I am a small guy, and get full quite easily. Most of the time I can't even finish a normal serving in other Portland restaurants. What Sweedeedee serves is small, very small and seriously not worth the 12 bucks they charge. One egg with some dirty greens and a spoon of jam just doesn't cut it. In general I don't like the 'order first, tip first and have your food later concept'. How am I supposed to know how well are you are going to treat me and serve, how should I decide whether I should tip you 30% or 15% before even having a word with you? Our server was either hung over from the day before or I don't even know what was going on in his mind. It was disastrous.
