I went here per recommendation of Traveler's House hostel and would have gone back again if I'd still been in the area. A line formed out the door shortly before opening, and as workers welcomed us to coffee while we waited to order, I got to talking with a woman behind me in line, who happened to be local to the area and was adorned with a warm, friendly smile and kind eyes. She gave me an "insider's tip" - "ask for the muffins!! They aren't even out yet... they always sell out... but ask for a muffin. It won't disappoint, I promise." This review is for 4.5 stars. I went for a Friday morning brunch around 10am and despite the criticism about the line moving slowly and having a tough time finding a table, i didn't have that experience. The wait was about 15 minutes in line then another 15 for the food and I found a table immediately. I had the breakfast plate which came piled with brioche bread, greens, eggs, fresh cheddar, and jam. The bread was oh so flaky and soft, the jam fresh and with real fruit, the salad obviously farmed fresh, and the cheese sharp as advertised. The only complaint is that the eggs were very salty. They busted open and were a great dipping option for the bread but couldn't fend off the saltiness. And the coffee was self serve unlimited for $2.50. I really wish I could have given Sweedeedee 5 stars but the eggs were just too noticeably salty. But still one of the best brunches I've ever had and less than $15. Been here a few times now and I'm not sure I'll come back again. Then again, I might forget I said that and return in 6 months. The staff is quite cold, the food is mediocre, portions are on the smaller side and definitely overpriced for what you're getting. The breakfast plate for instance is a few leaves of lettuce, one slice of toast, half a slice of cheese, an egg, a slice of orange, and some bacon. That's it. $12. I can most definitely make it quicker, better. and cheaper at home. Since you have to wait to get your food and a seat, you most likely buy a pastry and coffee while you wait in the small, crowded entryway dodging people walking in and out. I don't actually mind that at all, and on the contrary quite like the concept! The pastries however are also mediocre in my opinion, lacking in both texture and flavor. They're not super sweet, which if that's your thing, you might like. Do yourself a favor and go to Broder, Gravy, or even Grand Central Bakery instead. read more

It can be a little awkward when you first arrive. Once in the door, head to the counter place your order and pay. Next, have a seat if there is seating available. Seating is limited here. Be prepared to stand with your beverage and wait for a spot to open. It is a small establishment and might get a little awkward at this point. This is not a place to come with a large group. You will not find a place to sit together. We were there at 10am on a Sat and it was packed! It was also incredibly hot. Luckily, we did manage to get a table shortly before our food arrived. It just wasn't the most pleasant experience. The food was delicious and filling. The corncakes were sweet and salty. The croque madame was delicious! I wish I had room to try the cherry pie! Stopped in here for brunch on Saturday with my mom, who was visiting for the weekend. My mom (who only drinks decaf coffee) got her own french press with all the fixin's, I got house coffee, and both were very good. We were leary after reading online that you order your food and THEN you find a table, but I observed the system for an hour and it seemed to work perfectly. The wait staff pays attention to where the open tables are, and conveys that to the cashier, who conveys it to the customers. We were directed to seats upon ordering and did not have to wait, but I imagine if you do it's kind of nice that your food is being made while you wait, so you get to eat faster! They do a unique spin on brunch- incorporating a lot of greens and veggies with plenty of meat (if you partake) and delicious carbs! I had a great experience, I'll definitely go back. 11/7/13 - I'm changing my review to 5 stars because I'm becoming obsessed with this place. This place is packed with some serious flavor and awesome decor and great music. The eggs were cooked to complete perfection. The bacon strips were cooked to that point of sweet spot where they were both crispy and soft. The homemade sweet bread brought some of the biggest joys of today. Their meals are small but to the point. If you are looking to lose some weight by controlling your portion size, then go here. As cute as it sounds. Having lived on Albina, it was nice to have some life come to the street. The food is amazing, so fresh and delicious. Get the farm plate, or any of the pastries. I love the assortment of hand picked coffee mugs on the wall. Don't go on a weekend unless you're an early riser, or like standing over someone while they eat. Its a small little place where you order at the counter first before sitting, so that can get tricky. Oh, and they don't have high chairs,(at least not when I was there) so that may pose an issue as well if you have littles. read more

I wish I could use 6 stars to review this place! Sweedeedee breaks the records for the longest wait for breakfast, I've had enough time to chug two large mugs of coffee, a baked good (which actually was delicious) and fire through every conversation piece with friends and family before the awkward silence kicks in and our bodies sugar levels drop enough for us to get grumpy. I think the concept of order before you sit went out the window here, we sat down and waited more than 30 minutes before we ate, the food clearly wasn't ready to order and the place was not busy by the time we had sat down, in fact there was no line for food. The food is really tasty (especially the bacon) and the coffee (4/5) but seriously block out half a day or being someone you haven't seen for a long time. First meal in Portland and so far so good. From reading other reviews, there were a lot of comments in regards to poor seating arrangements which is understandable. This place has 3 tables outside, a bar area, and a few tables surrounding the walls. From my own experience, I came around 2 on a Wednesday and I didn't have any issues with seating. Menus are placed near the entrance for review and the order only took about 15-20 minutes. I ordered the egg sandwich and it was so good. I would recommend adding avocado and bacon to it. I ordered the salted honey pie for dessert and it was good as well. The perfect amount of sweetness and salt. The food and dessert was tasty, but a little pricey. read more

Best corn cakes I've ever had--and I seek them out--with two perfectly cooked eggs on top. Corn cakes can be too dry, but these were moist. The bacon was good, if a little undercooked for my taste, but my husband likes it that way. Our friends bought some of their pastries; the almond cake and brioche pastry were as good as they looked. The brioche pastry reminded me of kolaches from the Czech Stop in West, TX, so another point in Sweedeedee's favor. Plan not to eat lunch, though, as you will leave stuffed. read more

Well, just had one of the worst breakfasts I've had so far in Portland. I honestly don't understand the positive reviews for anything but their baked goods. Let's start with the good: 1. The baked goods. I tried the honey oat cake and a biscuit came with my breakfast. Both were good. Not great, but good. 2. That's it. As far as I can tell, that's the only good. Now for the bad: I'll start with what we ordered: My breakfast came with a biscuit, a soft boiled egg, greens, and ham. My SO ordered the sweet porridge. 1. The soft boiled egg was cold. Not like cooling down from sitting for an extra 10 minutes (which certainly did happen while they struggled to get food out)... but cold like it had been refrigerated. Yuck. 2. The ham was just basic sliced ham. Nothing special here, but at least edible, though it was also cold. 3. The sweet porridge had 3 main flavors: bitter, sour, and burnt...along with an aroma like rubber tires. It was awful. Truly awful. 4. The service. I'm sorry, but if you think this place has good service, you should get out more. For example...the meandering server occasionally handing out silverware 1 table at a time...why, oh why don't you just put out silverware for people to get for themselves?? Oh, and you might wonder why I didn't ask for something different. Well, since no one checks on customers after food is out, and the slow moving line is 6+ people long, time to leave and get better food elsewhere. Which we're doing, right now. read more

I love this non traditional breakfast! The meal had an abundance of flavor and color thrown in with a mix of old south charm. You order at the counter and then head to one of the few tables to wait. Who'd a thought a salad in the morning could be so tasty! Yes I am bit of a conventional eggs and bacon kinda girl and I had those too but this was a fabulous mix of homemade breads perfectly toasted with a perfectly done over easy egg, crispy yet chewy bacon and breakfast greens as they called them! No line in the middle of the week...so that is nice. Its like stepping into a piece of the south as you duck under the yellow striped awning through the wooden screen door. There are mason jars everywhere ready to fill with your drink of choice and it just feels homey inside. We decided to try the Bakers Breakfast and the Breakfast Burrito. I loved the Bakers breakfast. The house made adama bread is hearty and flavourful...topped with a generous spread of avocado, freshly sprouted bean sprouts, and thinly sliced radishes. There was a hard boiled egg and a small butter leaf salad with a simple vinaigrette to accompany the toasts. Very satisfying breakfast...fresh and delish. Hubby's burrito was not as much of a winner. I think it had great potential but ended up very big and bland: the potatoes, eggs, shredded lettuce, and avocado were a great beginning...but it needed a little pizazz to help this dish stand out. We enjoyed the local hot sauce "Hot Mama Salsa" helped a bit with the blandness, but we both agreed this burrito needed a little something exciting going on. This is worth a revisit as I would like to try some other items on the menu...including the pies, which seem to get great reviews. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

The freshest scrambled eggs I have ever eaten in a restaurant were here. The oatmeal is unique and enjoyable. Coffee is perfectly brewed. Bacon reminds me of childhood. I had a bit of my friends house salad too and it was very good. Another plus: they play lots of good music, most of which I assume was from Mississippi Records next door. One drawback: the set up is a little bit weird and confusing if you haven't been the first time (the menu is at the counter, you order there, and then find a seat... which sometimes means sitting with someone else. Came here on a Sunday morning around 9, it was busy but didn't take more than 15-20 for us to get seated. The place is hip and casual, the sort of place you'd imagine belongs in Brooklyn but thankfully for my wallet is in Portland. The service was friendly, attentive and quick. I had the Baker's Breakfast which was delicious. Hands down the nicest thing about the place is you can get your starchy sugary breakfast if you so desire but you also have the option of healthier lighter fares beyond the standard egg whites breakfast. They also serve extracto coffee which is easily my favorite coffee in Portland, and it's a nice change from the barrage of places that serve over acidic stumptown. Would I come again? Definitely? Would I wait longer to eat here? As long as extracto's involved. read more

Came here for weekend breakfast Was super busy with a fairly long wait. You have to stand on line to order (this was almost 30 mins), and then you have to wait to be seated (another 30 mins). The food was good, and we were happy we came, but we wouldnt wait an hour again to experience this a second time. If you can figure out when to come here when its less busy, then it would be worth it to frequent this place. We had the caprese sandwich and eggs on european bread with avocado. These were more delicious than the names alone would imply. We made the euro bread breakfast on our own at home the following weekend and we were happy we learned about this recipe. This place is incredible. Awesome, simple vibes and decor. Mason jars, mismatched dishes, and jars of preserves on the shelves make the place feel homey. The record player and handwritten menus help too! They don't have anything specifically gluten-free on their menu, but the girl at the counter was incredibly helpful and helped me figure out just what to order that would meet my dietary needs. I ended up getting the Breakfast Burrito in a bowl which was delicious. My husband got the Sweedeedee Breakfast Plate which he couldn't stop raving about the entire time he was eating! Go! Go right now. One of my favorite neighborhood spots. Whenever I have out of town guests this is a must do event. I love going there for brunch mid week SO much less hectic than a Saturday or Sunday. Super great crew. Cute aesthetics. Iconic Portland hipster brunch spot, right down to the record player pumping out tunes. Awesome local ingredients (for the most part) I did see some Heinz cans on a shelf sadly :( My favorite things to get are the breakfast plate, the corn cakes!! and the tuna Sando which is NOT just a tuna Sando it is beyond that. It's one thick slice of their homemade cornmeal molasses bread (I can neither confirm not deny if they use non GMO corn? I'll find out!) olive oil poached albacore with amazing veggies on top like crispy celery, pickled onions and peppers and sprouts with a simply dressed side salad. It's AUHMAZING. I'm curious to find out if they make their own mayo that they mix with whole grain mustard seeds for the creamy layer on this Sando. Worth the hype! read more

I have only been early on weekdays so I have never had to wait. And unlike most breakfast places in Portland, they are open before 9. I always get the sandwich with the molasses bread, egg, and shredded lettuce (and add avocado). It is delicious and huge. I save half to eat later. I've tasted the corncakes and the greens with hot sauce, also delicious. The coffee is strong and also very tasty. The menu is not huge, but if you like breakfast food and are not completely vegan or gluten intolerant, you will have a very enjoyable breakfast here. It is hipster central and probably the best breakfast people watching in all of Portland. The waitress put on a Leonard Cohen album midway through our last breakfast there, which is not really what I consider breakfast music, but I realized at that moment that "Leonard Cohen for Breakfast" would be the perfect title for my memoir about my years among the hipsters of Portland, so I have to thank Sweedeedee for that. read more
