I lived a couple of blocks away years ago and recently moved back to the area. Sweet Mandy B's has been one of my Chicago favorites for ages, so I was really excited to check it out again. My long time friend that still lives in Chicago met me here for my birthday last weekend, which her first time here. The selection of cakes, cookies, etc. were pretty good. I went with a bar that had coconut, pecans, butterscotch and chocolate chips, and more. It was really good and a pretty generous size, plus a canned cops brew latte. My friend had a mini gluten-free chocolate cake, which she enjoyed, too. Other than that, I didn't the staff was as nice as I remember they used to be, even the cashier was not that friendly, plus the one garbage can was filled to the brim the entire time and was overflowing when we shoved out trash away. Speaking of trash, I suggest they use dishes to serve the goodies on, instead of large plastic containers. It seems really wasteful and bad for the environment. Though, they constantly busy. The place is tiny, so we were lucky to get a table and people, yet most of us came in, ate, and left, so shouldn't be a long wait for one, either. The decor is cute, and they have artwork by a former employee that is now an artist that is pasty themed. Awesome bakery! Super kind staff, extremely efficient on a Saturday morning, and delish product. I asked for a few suggestions and it delivered! Loved the carrot cake-- super moist but really that cream cheese frosting was to die for. And the snickerdoodle was outstanding. Subtle but delish. Vanilla was OK.. prob wouldn't get that again and the cookie was tastey. We will be back for sure. A Chicago classic that serves old school desserts! You won't be finding any super trendy desserts or croissants here. Just delicious cupcakes, cookies, and pies. We didn't give dessert another thought; called them straight away and locked them in. The team provided an amazing take-away tasting which helped us narrow our choices and were super flexible in accommodating our desire for variety with small headcount (we did a mix of mini cupcakes, iced cookies and iced rice Krispies - choices, choices choices!). Sweet Mandys has some really great cupcakes. They are very sweet though, but yet so moist and addicting. I ordered their Snickerdoodle, Confetti, and Lemon cup cake. They were all really good. They're still not my favorite cupcakes in the area though, but a close second! I'm just not a fan of this online ordering stuff. Open up the bakery already! I came here to try their vegan treats. We got a chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting and a peanut butter bar dessert. They all tasted great, but my favorite was the vanilla cupcake. This place also offers vegan milks (soy, oat, almond) and plenty of other typical cafe drinks. My previous thoughts was that the brownies were the star of the show however I now know the banana bread is to die for. I bought it very causally not expecting it to be possibly the best banana bread ever. There are plenty of things I need to try but as much as I liked the bread I doubt I'd ever be able to top it. After lunch in the area we decided to try this place since I heard great things about it. We got banana pudding and chocolate pudding. Also a walnut brownie and a peanut butter cupcake cake. The banana pudding was so delicious with nilla and pieces of banana in every layer. The chocolate pudding was good. The walnut brownie was delicious and there were a a lot of walnuts. This place is incredibly overpriced and overrated. I bought a cake for my sons 4th birthday, and asked for a race car, monster truck on a racetrack, and rainbow somewhere on it. I also asked that the cars look somewhat like the race cars in "Cars" and to have a big #4 on it. The team at Mandy Bs went on and on about how difficult this would be and charged me $150 bucks for this cake. What I got was nothing short of amateur. The racetrack was a simple road, no racing theme, no number 4 anywhere except to say happy birthday, which is written so small you can barely discern the number. The cars were done by hand rather than printed or traced, which I was told would happen. Lastly, I made a comment to the store clerk that this didn't meet expectations and he/she got so defensive that they wanted to take a picture because the art was so good! I was completely flabbergast at the poor service. I was upset that I was sold a bill of goods; and they mocked me. Never again. I strongly suggest anyone reading this post to turn away. read more

I've heard of Sweet Mandy B's in passing from people but never was in the area to check it out for myself. I was lucky enough to attend a birthday celebration that offered Sweet Mandy B's cupcakes! I selected a double chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing. The icing was absolutely delicious. The icing was flavorful and tasted high quality. I normally take off a little icing whenever I eat cake or cupcakes but I didn't have to do that with this cupcake. The cake part of the cupcake was fresh and moist. I could easily eat the cake part without the icing because it was delicious but why would I?! After that one cupcake I could easily see myself visiting Sweet Mandy B's for more baked goods. I love Sweet Mandy B's with all my heart! This is the best bakery in Chicago. I've been getting my birthday cakes from Sweet Mandy B's since I was literally in middle school. The buttercream frosting is out of this world. Sweet Mandy B's Confetti Cake is truly one of the best desserts I've ever had. The cake is light and fluffy, and the vanilla buttercream is sweet and not cloying. My family has also been ordering Thanksgiving and holiday desserts from here for years. There are far better desserts at Bittersweet, and if someone is willing to drive up to Evanston, even better desserts at Bennison's. In addition, their business practices need improvement. Today, our daughter bought a cupcake there. The price on the board was $3.85. She was charged $4.72. When she asked why, the reply was: That price is only for our unfrosted cupcakes. Now this may seem like a small thing but it speaks to lack of regard for customers, and lack of transparency. (And, BTW, isn't a cupcake without frosting just a muffin?) And, it makes us wonder: This was advertised as a vegan cupcake, but that frosting sure tasted dairy based. What Lincoln Park needs is a bakery/cafe which respects the customers, not a place so indifferent to their needs that they overcharge for what tastes like pastries out of a cheap home mix box. read more

Everything here looks and is incredible. Having spent some time in the Southeast, I have a soft spot for a good banana pudding. It's pretty rare for a place outside of the South that isn't a barbecue restaurant run by people from the South to have a good banana pudding. Please note that due to the pandemic, the business is operating by pre-order only, but you can walk up and scan / enter / pay for your order and have your treat within minutes... I did this with my kids and ordered a couple of cupcakes this way, but I also pre-ordered in the early am for an afternoon pick-up for a larger order -- a variety of cookies and rice krispie treats. They are known for their cupcakes which are very good, however I love the frosted brownies and pies as well. Before Covid this place was open late and had the additional space next door. My friend and I walked by this place and knew we wanted a treat. However only she was able to walk in before they close at 6pm. I had to run to my car before 5:55pm and it was already 5:50pm, and neither one of us were able to extend the parking via the app, and I had my car sitting outside of Pequod's. My friend asked if I wanted anything, and I said I probably can't have anything since I'm yeast intolerant, and I was willing to bet that a vast majority of their treats aren't allergy friendly. She ended up finally me something through the employee, which I can appreciate. It's a flourless individual chocolate cake. I love that it still tastes like the real chocolate cake that I'm used to, but it doesn't make me feel bloated or cause my skin to react negatively. I just glanced over their online menu prior to writing this review, and I did see that they have a small vegan selection on their menu. I truly appreciate a local business doing their best to accommodate as many customers as possible, I think that dessert should be enjoyed even if there's dietary restrictions, and I do hope that they continue to get creative and fine tune the menu even more to have more vegan cupcakes and flourless options besides just the chocolate cake. My review is based on a gifted treat, it's delicious, and I do recommend Sweet Mandy B's to anyone in the area looking for pastries and baked goods.
