Selby's is one of the restaurants included in the Chase Sapphire Reserve Dining Collection and is featured in the Michelin Guide. I decided to go on a Thursday evening and sit at the Bar and Lounge instead of the dining room since the dining room has a set menu. I arrived at 5:30pm to find out that there was a 2 hour wait!! I was shocked, nothing special - father's day or anything. It turns out that since Chase has 2 $150 credits for dining at their selected restaurants and the first credit expires on June 30 and I went on June 26, everyone else had the same idea. We did not wait 2 hours and the hostess mentioned that if I came before they opened at 5pm, around 4:50pm, they may be able to either get me seated or the wait list would be shorter. The restaurant itself is on El Camino, between business but the front is beautiful and covered in ivy. They do not have parking, the building that they are in is shared by K&L Wine merchants and the parking is only for them not Selbys but they do offer complimentary valet, which is fast and efficient. I was going to go back on June 30, a Tuesday, but decided not to fight traffic on a weekday and ended up going on a Sunday instead, I arrived at 4:45 and there were already about 30 people in line, people showed to wait in line starting at 4:20pm. It was a hot day and not a pleasant wait but they open the doors promptly. It took time for the host to speak to each guest and discuss their options, this could have been faster. By the time I got to the front of the line, the wait list was 4 people deep and I was #5 and the wait was still an hour and a half. I decided to wait, there are 2 chairs in the lobby and fortunately I was able to snag one but they really should have more seating. They have a roof top but for reasons I did not understand and the hostess could not articulate properly, certain people were seated at the rooftop and others were not. I had been told over the phone that both bar and rooftop were available for walk ins. The wait ended up being an hour and I was seated at the bar with another person who was also dining by themselves, I had to tell the servers several times that were not together. You are immediatley greeted and the server pours you water and another brings out a small plate of truffle popcorn - delicious. They have an extensive wine list and serve cocktails as well. I ordered a glass of champagne. I took one star off for the lack of seating and for the pours, they were less than generous. When dining in the bar, you can order from the bar menu or the dining room menu. I decided to order from the bar menu. I got the plate of mussels and the black truffle burger. The mussels are $29 for a pound and that itself can be sufficient for a meal, it comes with a thick slice of toast to soak up the juices. I ended up not eating the burger but taking it to go. The burger was $55 and is served with fries. Both dishes were outstanding but a little salty. I also got the Pinot Noir Rose and it was better than the champagne. Service was great if not a bit delayed because they were very busy. Would I go back, probably if I did not have to fight the crowds to get in. read more

This review is for the bar side, which is walk-in only. If you make a reservation, it'll be for the main dining room side, which is a prix fixe menu. We had a great date night here this past weekend! The bar has an elevated old school vibe, it's dark inside and for a 1 Michelin star restaurant, not terribly pricey. We walked in to put our name down on the wait list just before 6 and we were quoted a 3.5 hour wait time. Last seating is at 9pm, so we may not have made it. We decided to do some grocery shopping and get a snack, then see where we were in the line before deciding if we would stay. It was worth it, as we were able to get seated around 7:45! I ordered the Dukes' martini with gin - on their menu, it says they have the "coldest martinis on the west coast" and it really was the coldest martini I've ever had, delicious too. They give you complimentary truffle popcorn, which was nice. For food, we ordered the mussels, chicken parm, and burger. Without us asking, they split the mussels so it'd be easier for my husband and I to share, which we appreciated. Both the chicken parm and burger were excellent, juicy and filling. We brought home leftovers. Our bartender/server Lawrence (who said he's been with Selby's since day 1!) was great - attentive and friendly. I had a really great time dining at Selby's! We came here on a Thursday date night to try the bar and lounge side of the restaurant, and overall really enjoyed ourselves. Despite being a Michelin star restaurant, the whole experience was very accessible and warm without feeling overly expensive. (Especially on the bar side- see tips section) AMBIANCE: - The entire interior is both classy and modern. They pull off being elegant without being stuffy in any way. The fireplace in the main dining room, ceiling fixtures, and beautiful bar were nice visuals. FOOD & DRINK: - We tried the tuna tartare ($31,) mussels ($29) and two orders of the steak frites ($42 each.) - The steak frites was the star and cooked to perfection! My +1 said the mussels alone are substantial enough to make for a meal! - I also tried a Manhattan and it was delish! SERVICE: - The whole staff was super warm, polished, and professional. Several servers frequently checked in and took good care of us. Shout out to Lawrence! TIPS & NOTES: - If you make a reservation, note you will be making that for the dining room side (pre fixe menu- as of summer 2026 I believe it's $130pp.) - If you want to sit in the bar and lounge, note they have a separate menu, but you can also order a la carte from the pre fixe menu. Oh, Father's Day. It's me and a table for one. Maybe the ghosts of my dad (3 years) and stepdad (2 month) floated by, but otherwise it was more a chance for me to mark the day with some self care - a good meal and some quiet time to myself. I had never been here but the Father's Day menu looked like opportunity enough to check it out. The vibe and decor actually had a very masculine feel. I'm not sure what goes on upstairs, but they have an ornate bar when you enter, linen on the tables that smells divine and is bright white in contrast with the subdued lighting of the place. You're in a cool cave of sorts with a fireplace going, even on a hot June day. I needed to write this review today because Suzanne was the star of the place. She was my server and she was so personable, so engaging, and so kind to me. I felt showered by attention, food, and hospitality. Each portion was small but balanced and told a little tale, visually and taste-wise. I had a fruit bowl as an amuse bouche with perfect berries followed by the laminated brioche with cultured butter and strawberry jam. Fun to pull apart! Fun to eat! Starter was a beet salad with burata - I would have preferred the beets to not have been grated because I love the bite of a just-cooked chunk of root, but the burata with the mustard green was pretty tasty. Loved the levain crisps/crutons. I had sea bass with saffron rissotto and creme fraiche beurre blanc something rich sauce :) Love raspberries in general but didn't love them as a garnish in this dish. The rest was good. Got to experience the fish spoon for the first time in my life! Fun little gadget, that. Black forest cake was really rich - didn't expect it to be cold and loved the cherry ice cream that accompanied. This was the one item I felt inclined to photograph - quite beautiful. Coffee was not my favorite - a bit on the bitter side - but coffee is a particular thing. I really am glad I checked this place out and would absolutely go back with a friend next time. My partner and I dined here on a Friday evening and we had a great dining experience. Our server was knowledgeable and was extremely attentive. The food on the other hand was ok. I think my favorite thing is the yellowfin tuna tartar, which was fresh. I got the roasted liberty duck, and even though the sauce was flavorful, I think the duck was a bit gamey and dry. Another great dinner experience at Selby's! During our second visit, our server, Suzanne, acknowledged our return and made the evening fantastic. She was personable, attentive, friendly, and fully engaged. Everyone on staff we interacted with met the same high standard. The interior has a classic fine-dining vibe with touches of modern elegance. During our first visit we sat in the lower dining room, and this time it was on the second floor. Both offer the same refined, well decored atmosphere. And the food was outstanding. We started with the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare which was bright, fresh, and perfectly seasoned and paired with chips. The Homemade Agnolotti were delicate pillows of rich, savory filling and topped with crispy parsnips to vary the texture of each bite. For mains, the Roasted Liberty Duck was cooked to tender perfection with crisp skin, and the Roasted Tai Snapper was flaky and flavorful, set off by a beautiful sauce. For dessert the Midnight Chocolate Cake is a musthave; decadent, and not too sweet. That's not all, there's also the amuse-bouche at the start of the meal, popovers with butter and tallow, and additional sweet treats after dessert. They serve half glasses of wine so you can pair wine with each course of the meal, which is fantastic. We ordered: - Yellowfin tuna tartare - steak tartare - burger The Yellowfin tuna tartare was my favorite but even though I didn't like potato chips as the vessel for serving the tuna tartare. The steak tartare was fresh, served with egg mixed in. My husband loved it. The burger was juicy and my six-year-old daughter finished the entire burger minus the lettuce and tomato. The food is top quality. For wine, we had the sanger sparkling wine (good one to start the meal), nerello mascalese rose (pretty good) and Sonoma coast Pinot (well structured). Selby's is a Michelin star restaurant and honestly one of the more affordable ones you'll find in the Bay Area. Just keep in mind the food is more on the traditional American side - think elevated comfort rather than the super intricate or elaborate dishes you'd see at some of the Michelin spots in SF. The base menu is reasonably priced, but if you're adding wine and going for the supplemental dishes like we did, it can add up more than you'd expect. Parking can be tough, so if you have a later reservation I'd suggest doing the complimentary valet. If you are one of the first few seatings, there may be street parking within a block or so. As for the inside, it is on the darker side but it is nice and they have music playing in the background. Service was great - we had Stanley (I believe that was his name). He gave us good recommendations for white and red wine pairings based on what we chose for our appetizer and entrees. There were some specials going on the day we dined, which made the overall meal more enjoyable - they had lobster ravioli (+$10) and veal filet/striploin (+$16). I was also able to taste some of my wife's petite filet - it was good and the filet was quite tasty but it was definitely slightly chewier than my veal. My veal sauce was also better as there was truffle in it. I wasn't the biggest fan of the veal sides though, as it was farro and asparagus compared to the mushrooms and potato with the filet. Dessert was great though. We got the sticky toffee and the midnight chocolate cake. Sticky toffee was moist but still had a slight chew to it. The cranberry orange compote was interesting, but can't say it's my favorite combination. Chocolate cake was very moist and not too sweet, and was a pretty big slice as well. This was great. One thing worth noting - we did not receive an amuse bouche, despite noticing that the tables around us did. We weren't celebrating a special occasion, but we did order 4-5 glasses of wine and both supplemental dishes, so it was a bit surprising to be passed over. We had a great dinner at Selby. It has that old-school, fancy restaurant vibe -- dim lighting, a cozy fireplace in the dining room -- the kind of place that feels special without trying too hard. The menu is a $125 fixed price and includes an appetizer, main, and dessert with the option to add supplements if you want to splurge a bit more. For apps, we chose the chestnut velouté and the handmade agnolotti. Both were good, but we agreed the velouté was the better of the two. We went with the filet and the venison, and both proteins were cooked beautifully. The only miss for us was the pumpkin side with the venison -- it had that stringy, scooped-out pumpkin innards texture, which just wasn't our favorite. Now the real star? The chocolate cake. I visited on New Year's Day 2026 with an OpenTable reservation to use the Chase Sapphire Reserve $150 dining credit and blown away by the hospitality, food, and overall experience. Food Price: $125 prix fixe per person (additional supplements noted). White Truffle from Alba, Italy A seasonal special served with 3 grams of white truffle, tagliatelle camembert, tagliatelle pasta, and freshly shaved parmigiano-reggiano. It was divided into two portion sizes for two adults. Definitely worth the extra splurge and was a separate cost from the pre-fixed menu. Pommes Frites Classic French fries with housemade spicy aioli and ketchup. It was crispy and served fresh. This was also a separate cost from the pre-fixed menu. Popovers with Butter (Complimentary) Warm, airy popovers that had a crispy exterior with a light, fluffy filling and served with a side butter. Pasta (Complimentary) This dish was an al dente stuffed pasta with a creamy cheese filling, specifically prepared for the toddler in my party. Asian Pear & Belgian Endive Salad Cavatina cheese, date vinaigrette, bite-sized spheres of Asian pear, and candied walnuts. Light, balanced, and refreshing like a palette cleanser. Yellowfin Tuna Tartare Served with Shio Koji vinaigrette and crisp potato chips. Refreshing flavors and very easily shareable. Flannery Ribeye, Dry-Aged (14 oz.) Cooked medium rare and perfectly tender, for someone who isn't a huge steak eater. It had a lightly seasoned crust and great flavor. Captain's Chicken Vandouvan, forbidden rice, smoked bacon, and Marcona almonds. Tender, flavorful, and still moist even as leftovers, which was an excellent option. Sticky Toffee Pudding Served with cranberry-orange compote and thyme ice cream. A bit on the sweeter side, but enjoyable if you like this type of dessert. Midnight Chocolate Cake Three rich layers with mascarpone cream, chocolate fudge, hazelnuts, and edible gold flakes that was not overly sweet. Neapolitan Ice Cream Sandwich (Complimentary) A circular chocolate-dusted ice cream sandwich offered as a nice gesture for the special occasion. Housemade Caramels (Complimentary) Soft, chewy, and a nice way to end the meal. Ambiance The restaurant and bar are dimly lit. It was elegant, but a bit too dark for photos or reading the menu. The seating options include standard tables, cushioned booths with accent pillows, and second-floor dining area. Customer Service Service was outstanding from beginning to end. Complimentary valet at both the front and back entrances. There's an option to tip with cash or the Venmo sticker with a QR code. We came a little bit before opening to be able to eat at the bar & lounge. It was already almost all full when we got there! The bar/ lounge is first come first serve, but does allow full dining! We did al la carte and shared (: MUSSELS ($29) -- really amazing, and big portion CHICORY PERSIMMON SALAD ($26) -- delicious!! everyone's favorite of the night BEEF WELLINGTON ($93) -- cooked perfectly, but flavor was missing a bit for me PACIFIC COD ($68) -- fish was also cooked perfectly, but the lentils were sooo strange and did not compliment the dish There's also a pre-fixe menu, I believe it was around $125 to $150 per person. I don't go to fine dining that often unless it's a special occasion, but I had the honor of using my CSR dining credit here on on Dec 30th/NYE (I can't remember exactly which date). I called prior to coming to see if I'm able to be on the waitlist, and unfortunately you have to be there in person to put it down. The estimated wait time was 3-4 hrs, but I got there around 7:30pm, and waited 1 hr for a table for 2 at the bar area. We got lucky, because I almost gave up waiting that long, but there's a target nearby to kill some time. As for parking, valet is free but please tip them, or you can be like me and park in the neighborhood area. When sitting at the bar, there is a bar menu that is a la carte, and the dining room menu that could also be ordered a la carte. Items got: -complimentary truffle popcorn -truffle burger (split in half) -chicken parm (WOULDN'T RECOMMEND) -steak and frites -mussels (came with toasted sourdough bread, 2 pieces) -their famous chocolate mousse cake The server was so kind to ask if we want our burger to be split! It wasn't the best burger I had, but was eyecatching as it's a "truffle" burger. I'd rate this a 6.5/10. The steak and frites was my favorite! I am a sucker for fries and the steak was amazing. Mussels were also the highlight of the night, and the juice from it was good. The chicken parm was not good. I highly don't recommend and it's not a popular item here either. Popcorn was typical, and wasn't special because of the truffle seasoning. Lastly, the chocolate mousse cake was to die for! Absolutley loved it. Service was great with a variety of staff members coming by to check-in on us aside from our primary server. Cocktails: I was pretty disappointed at the selection. Nothing was very inspiring nor creative and not worth $20 for a traditional cocktail IMO. Cocktail wasn't even listed in the drinks menu table of contents. Menu is prix fixe, but I did see a few tables that also ordered à la carte items (e.g. burger). What is slightly annoying is that a large number of items listed had a "supplemental charge" (e.g. half the appetizers) that I found surprising when the cost is $125. Food was solid and more traditional rather than creative. Fun little items were the popovers and amuse bouche that were tasty. In addition to the desserts ordered, they also provide little caramels to take-home, small little treats, and a complimentary huckleberry ice cream sandwich for a celebration, which were nice touches. Booked a reservation here using my CSR credits to celebrate my 10 year anniversary with my wife. We were seated upon arrival and couldn't help but notice how beautiful the interior was with dim lighting to set the mood for a romantic night out. The staff also had a hand signed card waiting for us at our table which was a nice touch. Our server (Bertan) was so welcoming and provided us with his recommendations which perfectly aligned with what we were interested in. We started with the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare which was so refreshing followed by the handmade Agnolotti which is like tiny duck filled ravioli. The flavors and contrast in textures was so satisfying. For the entrees we shared the Dry Aged Duck Breast and the Beef Wellington which were fantastic! Both were cooked to medium rare perfection. The beef was insanely tender and paired well with the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach while the duck was well seasoned and had a nice crispy exterior. I usually prefer beef over duck, but the execution on this duck was incredible! We ended the meal with the Spiced-Apple Tart and the Midnight Chocolate Cake. We were not fans of the apple tart and would skip, but the chocolate cake was indulgent, moist, and a MUST try. The entire staff demonstrates a mastery in their craft and top notch service. I did notice some other tables in the bar area had burgers and fries which looked appetizing, but I didn't see that on our menu. I rated this a 4 because the set menu price (without supplements) is already beyond what I would consider a great deal to earn a 5. The experience was great, but the bill was even larger compared to other places that had similar vibes. I may not have ever tried Selby's if not for the CSR credits, but ultimately I am still glad that I did since my wife and I got to try something new. She was fantastic - professional, charming presence but never intrusive; knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and a total pro at making my off-menu cocktail request - it was perfectly crafted. This restaurant is the only Bay Area restaurant located on the peninsula listed on Chase Sapphire Reserve's Exclusive Tables list for the Bay Area (the vast majority are located in San Francisco, w a smattering in Oakland, Napa/Sonoma, Carmel, and Sacramento). The CSR's new card benefit (rolled out Oct '25) consists of a $150 statement credit per half year, and tons of people were in a rush to utilize this before EOY, so Selby's was PACKED. We put our names down at 5:30p on Tuesday during the holiday week after Christmas; the estimated wait time was 3.5-4 hours for a party of 2 for bar + lounge only (ppl had been lining up outside as early as 4:15p. They called us back at 8:00p and we were 15min away so we came back after getting salads nearby in dtRC. This review is for the walk-in bar seating (not the dining room) for 2 ppl; both of us hold the CSR and wanted to use our benefit while dining together. We opted for the $125 pp prix fixe winter 2025 dinner menu which had options to choose from (w some premium selections including supplemental charges). What we ordered: Him: Starter - HANDMADE AGNOLOTTI Slowly Cooked Duck, Beurre Monté, Crispy Parsnips Entrée - PAN-ROASTED HALIBUT Lentils du Puy, Chanterelle Mushrooms, Beurre Rouge Dessert - STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING Cranberry-Orange Compote, Thyme Ice Cream -- agnolotti was ok, halibut was fresh, and dessert was way too sweet. Her: + $19 cocktail - Naked & Famous (requested off-menu) Starter - CHESTNUT VELOUTÉ Roasted squash, Braised Apples, Pecan Tuile Entrée - DRY AGED DUCK BREAST (requested cooked medium rare instead of medium standard) Black Truffle and Celeriac Mille-Feuilie, Cranberry-Vanilla Jam Dessert - CRÉMEUX DE CITEAUX (+ $8 supplement) Local Strawberries, Marcona Almonds, Olive Melba Toast -- velouté could have been more flavorful, duck was good but the jam was too sweet. Additional costs: + 5% fee (added pre-tax) for San Mateo County employer-mandated expenses added to the bill. + 9.875% San Mateo 2025 tax rate + 20% tip $375 total for 2 ppl ($170 and $205 for ea of our meals), including the mandated living wage surcharges + tax + tip listed above. Overall, the service and presentation were both nice; but that doesn't warrant the price point for tiny portions and mediocre taste. If I could've had a redo, I would've just ordered from the bar menu for a better value since the flavors were good, but not great: 19 caesar salad + 26 steak tartare + 42 steak frites + 19 cocktail would've sufficed for the $150 credit instead. Parking: self-park was impossible w no availability during a busy night, and it was so hard to see signage in the dark to find anything in the back. It will be quicker to utilize the complimentary 3rd-party valet service at the front entrance (tip your attendant) unless you want to risk getting towed if parked in neighboring businesses' reserved parking lots. One of the other valet drivers almost backed another patron's car into mine when my attendant was bringing mine to the curb! If my attendant hadn't honked the horn at the other crazy speedster attendant, there might've been another auto insurance nightmare. Thankfully, mine had quick reflexes, and thus I got my car back alright. The decor inside is beautiful, though, and the building does have old school charm despite the parking setup. I'm aware they've held a Michelin star distinction for several years, but I'm hesitant to return to try the full dining room experience, given the moderate experience we had in their bar/lounge. read more

An incredible dining experience inside a two-story restaurant with cozy-vintage Hollywood interiors and top quality dishes. The price is on the higher end, but the presentation and execution of dishes were excellent. (Sounds about right for a Mich. 1 star and 3 supplements!) After the complimentary pate liver choux, we choose tuna tartare and sweetbreads for our appetizers which were rich and flavorful. Our entrees were Beef Wellington and the Dry Aged duck breast with vanilla-cherry jam. Both meats were tender, cooked to perfection and each came with an au jus. While the dishes were already delicious, my favorite course was the desserts: the midnight chocolate cake, and the sticky toffee pudding. Now if I had to recommend anything it with be the sticky toffee - a clever reimagination of the British classic that includes salted toffee sauce, a super moist date cake, and finished with thyme ice cream. Went to Selby's for a late 8:45pm reservation on a busy Friday and had an amazing experience. Complimentary valet (just tip) was fast and super friendly. The restaurant was cozy and festive with a Christmas theme, and we were seated upstairs after a short wait. It's a prix fixe menu and everything we ordered was delicious. Drinks were great (Vesper, Paper Plane, espresso martini). For food: Asian pear & Belgian endive salad, yellowfin tuna tartare, butter-poached lobster, and butternut squash risotto -- portions are on the smaller side but the quality was excellent. Desserts were also a hit (spiced-apple tart and midnight chocolate cake), and the house-made chocolate mints and caramels at the end were such a nice touch. The dining room at Shelby's in Palo Alto is absolutely lovely. The setting, the lighting, and the noise level were perfect for a special evening celebrating birthdays and anniversaries with loved ones. We were fortunate to have a nice table towards the side, which felt very private and was a wonderful setting for our dinner. The food was great. The prix fixe menu was $125 for three courses. While the main entrees were traditional and not terribly inventive, everything was prepared deliciously. Note that several entree options have a supplemental fee. Now, for the absolute highlight: The chocolate cake at Shelby's is truly wonderful and should not be missed! It is a classic dessert that is the perfect, indulgent finish to the meal. I don't usually eat American food, but Selby's was really nice. The decor is so cozy at this time (December) and the staff are quite attentive and accommodating. I'm honestly not used to eating such filling portions during meals, but it was nice that I didn't get hungry again at 10pm like I usually do. Some highlights of the meal- amuse bouche, tuna tartare, and ice cream caramel dessert. For my entree, I chose the filet and it was perfectly medium rare. I am picky with that. Some places overcook "medium rare", but it was good here. My only regret is not using this as an opportunity to change out of my casual wear. Wow, what a treat. Be prepared for amazing service, top quality food, and a LARGE bill. Granted, me and my gf did opt for three supplements. Started with the duck tortellini and scallop supplement with caviar. The duck tortellini was so succulent with the most delicious French butter sauce. My gf proclaimed the scallop to be "the best scallop she's ever had," I thought it was amazing (but not life changing). Next course, opted to upgrade to the striploin and Wellington. The beef Wellington made Gordon Ramsay's look like child's play. The striploin was a perfect medium-rare with amazing bernaise and bordelaise sauce. I would say the Wellington upgrade was worth the $, while the striploin was not. Still two incredible steak dishes--both highly memorable. They brought us a free raspberry ice cream sandwich before the dessert we ordered. Super thoughtful. The raspberry ice cream was delicious w a subtle raspberry hint that perfectly complimented the chocolate cookie. Finally, the chocolate cake they brought last was the best chocolate cake I've ever had. So moist, so rich, so decedent. A must get. Cocktails were strong. Martinis were freezing cold, with a little extra in a chilled glass waiting for you after drinking what's initially in the cup. The service was impeccable. Had low expectations given that I recently dined at The Village Pub and found that to be mediocre and knowing that it is the same owners, but we were pleasantly surprised. Both restaurants had Michelin stars in the past, not currently. Walked in on a Friday night at 5:45 pm and waited about 1 hr for a seat for 2 at the bar/lounge area. That area is all for walk ins, and they get packed as soon as they open. There are maybe 12 seats at the bar and 5 tables. The rest of the restaurant is basically all by reservations. They have complementary valet parking but I just parked in the residential area in the back, no issues. The tasting menu, al la carte menu, and bar menus are all available at bar/lounge area. It's not as quiet and intimate as the main dining area but it's quiet enough for a nice meal in a more casual setting. The meal started off with some complimentary truffle popcorn. It was decent, not very well mixed though since some pieces were salty and others were flavorless. We then ordered from the al la carte menu and got the Selby burger $27, beef wellington $93, and chocolate cake $18. Every dish was fantastic. Requested for no added salt and they were able to accommodate. Perfectly cooked meats. Chocolate cake was not overly sweet at all. High quality ingredients and well crafted. My only small complaint would be that the beef wellington seemed overpriced for the portion Service was great. My husband and I celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary here on Wednesday. We live in Oakland, so it was a bit of a trek, but we did a late dinner and it was a Wednesday, so traffic wasn't bad. They sat us at bar while we waited for our table. Ian served us at the bar -- complimentary champagne for our anniversary! My husband ordered a Manhattan Project. When they called us for our table (upstairs), we grabbed our drinks and headed up. Beautiful art! I was particularly taken with the painting of the woman at the bar. We ordered the pre-fixe menu, but added to it. I've attached the pictures of the menu. We ordered three appetizers (it comes with two; one each): yellowfin tuna tartare, handmade tortellini with duck, Asian pear and Belgian endive salad. The tartare was our least favorite of the three; still delicious but nothing new or extraordinary and it came with chips and cost an additonal $8. Both the salad and the tortellini were amazing! The salad bites in your mouth just melt away into layers of flavors and textures. For our mains, we ordered the butter-poached Maine lobster and the dry-aged duck breast. The lobster came with gnocchi and black trumpet mushrooms. The duck came with black truffle, celeriac mille-feuille, and cranberry-vanilla jam. We got a bottle of wine-- which was good. For our desserts, we ordered the spiced-apple tart and the midnight chocolate cake. Both desserts were really good. My husband really liked the apple tart because it was so unique. It came with a hazelnut frangipane and dulcey chocolate ganache. They also gave a us a few extras at the beginning and the end. Started off with a couple of amuse-bouche, and a popover with special butter, which were SO good; might've been my very favorite in the whole meal. I wanted to love our experience here, and to be fair, the food was genuinely good. However, the value just isn't there, and the ordering process left us feeling incredibly frustrated. The menu layout is quite misleading, and unfortunately, our server did not explain it clearly. Because of the lack of communication, we wound up with two Spring Prix-Fixe orders on our check that we never intended to buy, alongside the individual entrées we thought we were ordering. Recommended to me buy a friend and wow, I'm so glad I made a reservation to celebrate my husbands birthday at Selby's. The service, food and ambiance was exactly what I was looking for. It was a cross between elegance and old-Hollywood glamour - very classy. They sat us on the second floor at a table overlooking the dining room, a lot of the staff said it's their favorite table. The staff made sure we had a special night and accommodated our requests. The food was excellent, I definitely enjoyed my husband's Wagyu entree more than the Beef Wellington (still a great option, I just love wagyu). The appetizers and pop-overs were delicious and dessert, omg the Midnight Chocolate Cake was decadent - not overly sweet but very rich, my chocolate craving was satisfied.
