It's cool that Sweetfin offers such a variety of bases and toppings, but I personally prefer the simplicity and consequently cleaner flavors of more traditional poke offerings. Nevertheless, the Sriracha Tuna Poke Bowl (Sriracha ponzu sauce, avocado, asparagus, cilantro, sundried tomatoes, crispy onions) and Gochujang Salmon Poke Bowl (Black garlic gochujang sauce, asparagus, shiitake, bean sprouts, crispy garlic) - both ordered with Forbidden Rice, Citrus Kale, and Kelp Noodle Slaw - were fine if not as fresh in the evening as they likely would've been earlier in the day. I used to come here every week since they first opened, and I've always loved it. It's my kids' favorite place--the food is healthy, and they regularly introduce new items to the menu, which keeps things interesting. The previous staff handled busy rush hours very well, even when the place was packed. Unfortunately, the newer staff seem to have attitude issues and don't handle large groups or kids very well. I watched them rush the customer in front of me so much that she didn't even end up getting what she asked for. My main concern is the constant staff turnover. The most recent team doesn't seem well-suited to run the place or contribute positively to the customer experience. If the staff aren't kind or genuinely willing to serve, it really takes away from the whole experience--and makes me question whether I want to keep coming back. read more

Hands down, this is my all time favorite location on many things, would not recommend to go to the one in Newport since it was a bad experience for me. This location however, fresh, clean and they don't have undercook forbidden rice. Having my bowl fresh with the wasbi taro chips is my go to and honestly, they should have a taro poke bowl version like poke nacho with taro chips. I normally recreate Remi bowl but this time I wanted to build my own and it was really good. If you bring your student ID you get a discount, not sure if its in all location, I just saw a board in the shop. I actually really like the large variety of flavors and toppings they offer: for example, culinary delights like gochujang, miso, sesame, soy, some fancy rice called forbidden rice. But these healthy bowls are more like a snack to me as they are light on the rice base. I might have to bring my own rice next time to make a meal out of it. When I first moved to San Diego, my relatives told me they really liked this shop for their poke. As many mainland poke places, it was a customizable poke bowl. I decided to give it a try a couple years later. It's located next to Blue Bottle Coffee and Shake Shack in One Paseo in Del Mar. There's a visitor parking garage closest to the shop (not the one across from it) with ample parking stalls which could get hectic during the weekends. I got their BYOB with tuna and salmon. I'm not going to list all the ingredients I chose as there were 2-3 sauces and 8 toppings LOL. I went straight for the mainland style poke bowl. The bowl looked delicious and surprisingly, was quite good and flavorful. It definitely wasn't the traditional poke I loved without all the random toppings, but it was a good mainland poke. The only downside was that there didn't seem to be much fish which was a bummer. The entire bowl was majority rice and toppings which made sense since I had 8 different things. I also got a side of Surimi Salad which was pretty good for a good portion for the price paid. Good flavor to mix together with the poke bowls! I came back another time and this time had my boyfriend order the bowl. He got the same fishes as I did previously: yellowtail tuna and salmon. However, he didn't add as many things as I did... instead he had 3x garlic flakes and 2x onion flakes with almost no greens besides the sprouts LOL. however, the bowl was VERY good and flavorful with the garlic and onion - just wished it had a little more greens. Overall, quite a fun place to decorate my poke bowls with a variety of toppings even though the fish wasn't fresh fresh. When we finally got to the front, the employee told us he couldn't take our order because he was too busy -- and that we had to use the kiosk instead. We asked if our order could be prioritized, since we had already waited in line well before the kiosk orders started coming in, but he said no -- kiosk orders are processed in the order they're received. That meant we would be sent to the back of the line behind people who had just walked in. It felt really unfair and honestly kind of disrespectful to customers who were clearly trying to follow the usual in-person process. We were so disappointed we just left. I understand the staff was busy and overwhelmed, but there should be better communication or signage if customers are expected to use the kiosk only. I'm frustrated. I live across the street and have couple gift cards to use here and it's been hit or miss. Tonight takes the cake. I literally watched as the guy made my yuzu Kosho bowl on top of someone else's order- I thought he was making another person's bowl and had told him I wanted a base of salad and slaw, saw him grab the bowl of rice he was working on and build the bowl on that. Once he started trying to ring me up I corrected him and he built the correct base and transferred the contents on top to the new bowl. I didn't realize until I got home hed also forgot avocado. And by the time I got home they were closed so I have no recourse. I'm also an exhausted new mom, breastfeeding my infant, so it matters to me even more than normal what I eat because my milk is the source of nutrition for my baby. You can order online, on a kiosk in-store, or with the staff. The service from Bryan was exceptional. He was friendly, patient, and helpful in explaining the menu to me, since I was unfamiliar with their options. I had heard about the limited edition Remi Cruz bowl online ("Sustainable Salmon, Truffle Sriracha Mayo, Avocado, and Cucumber over Sushi Rice. Topped with Eel Sauce Drizzle, Crunchy Rice Noodles, and Wasabi Furikake.") and had to try it for myself--really delicious! It's clear that they use top-tier ingredients. The salmon was fresh, the sushi rice (which I chose instead of noodles) was the perfect consistency, and Bryan added the perfect amount of sauce and toppings to my bowl. Had an umami flavor mixed with the creaminess of the avocado and a nice crunch from the cucumber. I decided to upgrade to a combo, which also included a medium-sized bag of taro chips lightly dusted with wasabi furikake, as well as a drink (I chose the Iced Matcha Tea--perfectly rich but refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness). The kid's poke came with a 1/4 cup of tuna, a few pieces of mango and a few pieces of kale that I subbed in lieu of rice. The cucumber salad was very spicy but refreshing. Definitely not worth $5 since it was tossed right before plating and not marinated whatsoever. The best part? The matcha popcorn which had matcha powder, coconut, sesame seeds, white chocolate and salt. It was sweet, salty and delicious. If you're in One Paseo and are looking for poke, Sweetfin is available though pricey with small portions. I used to LOVE sweetfin, I would go to bat for them against anyone who used to dislike them. But the portions over my many years eating here have gotten OUT OF CONTROL. I'm sure everyone can agree we all work very hard for our money and everything is so expensive now....and I'm sorry but to get about 1.5 ounces of poke with an upgraded "large" bowl for $25 it's unacceptable. I stopped eating here about 2 years ago because I was tired of this and here I am trying it again to see if they changed back to adequate portions per their pricing and still it's so bad.
