This was our first visit to La Cantera resort since the remodel. We wanted to eat here and be able to see the fireworks so we reserved a table by the window. When we got there the manager told us that there was not a table by the window and no fireworks would be visible anyway. We told him we had seen them in the past but he argued with us that there was no way to see them. So we were seated in the middle of the restaurant. The meal was as disappointing as the managers negative attitude. The beet salad small plate had bitter greens and maybe a tablespoon worth of food. The goat cheese was generous but the plate was not a good value for 12.00. The chicken small plate was essentially four pieces of chicken fingers that tasted like anything you might get at an amusement park. After the disappointing appetizers we decided to forgo the main and just had the dessert cups. The s'mores and cream cup were pretty good as well as the chocolate cake. Service was excellent and we felt well taken care of. At the end of the meal the waitress pointed toward the window to show is the fireworks display that the manager insisted was not visible from the restaurant. All in all very disappointing experience. read more

Bbq shrimp and grits were amazing. The grits were creamy and so tasty. Crab cakes and deviled eggs were heavenly and the v tastes were so rich. All of the food was delicious. The homemade ranch dressing was delectable. Finished it off with a bourbon soaked tiramisu. Definitely will be back. read more

Great new addition to La Cantera Resort! I got the pork belly starter and the "garbage" salad with grilled chicken for lunch and both were delicious. The crispy kale in the salad was a great touch. I've been here twice for dinner and both times have been such a great experience! The drinks and food are awesome and the view is breath taking! Kyle has been our server twice and has given exceptional service!! The first visit they did not have pizza that night and that's what we ordered but Kyle did an awesome job of suggesting the next best thing and even offered us a dessert of our choice on the house as an apology! I can't wait to visit Sweet Fire again it immediately became my new favorite place!! read more

I probably would've given this 4 stars based on food quality, however we were very late arriving, near closing, and were prepared to be told we could not be seated. Although I'm sure they were not very happy with us the entire staff enthusiastically greeted, seated, and served us with smiles and kinds words. Our tip definitely reflected their positive attitudes and professionalism. The chef even came out to let us know they were out of a few items and to recommend the best temperature for the steak and burger we eventually ordered. Everything was very good but made even better by the friendliness of the staff. We also like the open kitchen area and the décor. Went there for their Mother's Day brunch. Paid $70.00 a person for food that was less than satisfactory. The horrible smell coming from the cheese, seafood and meat bar was absolutely putrid and caused us all to cut our meal short and leave. New Years Soirée. Food left everything to be desired. The Oysters were awful whatever they topped them with was really bad. The corn chowder soup was Lukewarm, odd consistency, and no seasoning. Entree's. Halibut and Chicken Fried Lobster. I can't even say for sure that it was even lobster. The breading was so thick and it was drenched in BBQ sauce, it just wasn't right. The Fillet was ok. But no steak knife, and it didn't cut like butter. Best thing with the Parsnip whipped potatoes. (Potatoes were the best thing @ $90 a plate) The deserts were good in flavor horrible consistency. We had the previous plates on our table for each course. We were seated to a visibly dirty table cloth, for the oyster course (2nd) first with no silverware. Got the soup, still no drinks. Ordered a bottle of white wine, got red. Got the right wine after the entree was delivered. My daughter order Angry Orchard (on draft) she got the wrong drink, after the entree was finished. Great food option in the La Cantera Resort! The pizza is wood fire baked and is old school style. Very tasty. The 3 layer chocolate cake is pricey but delicious, however there claim to fame in my opinion are the fried deviled eggs! Best eggs I have ever had! From start to finish this was a terrible experience. It took 20min for the waiter to even acknowledge us after we were sat. I asked for a children's menu, but never got it. We immediately ordered drinks and an appetizer and it took 20min for the drinks to be brought out and one was forgotten. When asked about it our waiter said the bartender was still working on it. He came back about 5min later and said that specific drink was only available at brunch and the bartender could not make it. Somehow, this drink was still added onto our check when we went to pay, and we never did receive our appetizer. We did receive some delicious complimentary cornbread, but it was the size of a large muffin for the six of us to split. An hour after ordering our meals the waiter returned to our table to inform us that one of the ordered entrees was unavailable and asked what else we would like. When our food was finally brought out multiple items were missing, and several were brought that were not ours. My steak was grossly overdone and every plate was extremely small. The only plate that was decently sized was my daughter's chicken tenders, which my husband ended up sharing with her since his meal was so tiny. Our waiter never once offered to refill of our drinks and routinely forgot to bring us things we asked for. On top of everything, a metal chair leg broke out from under me causing me to fall. The manager came to check on me after we told the waiter what happened but seemed very uncaring. She said she would give us a discount on the ticket, but there was no such discount when the check came. We were sat at 6:30pm and did not get out of there until 9:30pm. It was a three hour train wreck that left me bruised, and all of us still hungry. The worst part is there was a local celebrity sitting next to us and we watched as the staff fawned over him and gave his party multiple complimentary items. This proves that the staff can be attentive and they do know how to treat their guests properly. Unfortunately, we just were not important enough to receive such treatment. read more

They put dried crab on top with no berdinaise sauce??? Lobster mac cold, braised short rib cold. They recommended the quail and grits. It came out burnt. Unfortunately, we received very poor service and sadly the management made continued excuses and put forth little effort to resolve or better our experience. We had valentines dinner at Sweetfire Kitchen. Food was beautifully presented and (of what was edible) it was delicious. Staff was very nice, but overall it was clear everyone from the hosts to the kitchen was completely overwhelmed. The wait time on our appetizer & entrees was ridiculously long just so they could get sent back to the kitchen. My boyfriend's steak was so rare (ordered med-rare & I did the same). While my steak was properly cooked, it was so cold the truffle butter stayed completely solid! His steak came back STILL rare, but we decided to move on & just take it back for the dogs since we'd already spent two hours there and witnessed other tables make a scene. We did get a small discount for the inconvenience which was laughable. We were over it & needed to get home at a decent time so we skipped dessert & my boyfriend was so sick yesterday. We were a party of 6, and our meals were served sporadically, and one entree was completely forgotten, and brought to us by the manager after everyone else finished. Don't go to this place if you have any special dietary requests. I asked for butter and oil not be used on my sautéed fish--they wouldn't oblige. I ended up ordering steamed or sautéed vegetables using water only and they also did not want to (but eventually did) make this either stating that it wouldn't taste good. 5/5/18 Great restaurant , but dont get Rene as your server. He got our order wrong on 4 points , worst off we caught his lie about why our order was wrong. Was here for breakfast the day before and order the EXACT same two entrees for breakfast as the day prior with 4 significant changes in the breakfast from the day prior. When the plate of fruits, granola, and yogurt arrived, there were no strawberries as before. We asked where they were, he told us that they were seasonal fruits and they didn't have any. I got up, walked the the breakfast buffet, and found a giant bow of strawberries there. I confronted Rene and he realises that I caught him in his lie. He was too lazy to get us the berries and to arrogant to admit he lies. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH WHAT HAPPENED THIS MORNING . MANAGEMENT please confront him. Breakfast was awful. For a spectacular resort that this restaurant is in you would expect something better. The fruit I ordered looked old and not appetizing. The oatmeal was just ok. My 5 friends and I are staying at La Cantera for a girls weekend. We decided to come to SweetFire Kitchen for dinner, as it was convenient since we spent all day in the car to get here. We arrived just before 8 pm. We ordered drinks and food by 8:20. We did not receive our food until 9:20. The water remained unfilled for 15 minutes. Of the 6 people; 3 ordered salads, one ordered a burger, one ordered a gluten free pizza and one ordered fried chicken on a stick. It took a full hour to receive our food. None of what we received should have taken an hour. We split the check and they came wrong. It took 10 minutes to get the check fixed. It's now after 10 pm and we are still waiting to get checked out and leave. I will say - to avoid complete negativity - the drinks were great. The food, after the wait, was okay. The burger was the best thing at the table. Fries were lukewarm, salads were under dressed and pizza was definitely not crispy - which is expected in a wood fire grill. Super underwhelming. I hope the remainder of our experience is good. read more

Came for restaurant week. Food was very good - menu included asian fusion and a refreshing (in terms of flavor and originality) take on a crabcake. My fellow diner from Baltimore was impressed with the crab. Dessert was tasty and interesting but, as a pretty normal dessert that was just deconstructed, would have been just as good served as one whole. Getting to the place was a nightmare however - i would all but say don't bother if you self-park; it is almost as if you actually cannot get here from there. Valet it or don't go; there are no signs to get you there otherwise. Its a hike the hill, through the pool, through this or that gate, up the stairs, down the hall, find the right nookto turn into, then and only then the restaurant space appears. Service was spotty to boot. And their normal menu pricing seemed about double the $15 for lunch r.w. deal, so for all the bother would be quite pricey for lunch. Probably this works best if you're a hotel guest, and certainly that crabcake sandwich would be awesome poolside fare. read more

Staying at this resort for a business convention. Decided to have a late lite meal after the day at The River Walk. Had the chopped salad (too salty but good fresh ingredients). ((I'm s salt-aholic so I'm usually always adding salt!). The gluten free wild mushroom pizza was a One star- very bland and chewy. If I had to write a manual about how to ruin a special occasion, I'd probably ask the staff and management of this restaurant for tips. Read through its worth it. Because of the pandemic I hadn't been able to see my family in several months. We were finally able to get together for the holidays and I wanted to do something special for nye so we planned on being here. Our 1030pm reservation didn't get seated until 1045pm. What's the point of a reservation? Management must've thought that one of the busiest nights of the year would be the perfect occasion to pair us with the most incompetent waiter ever. We were promptly seated at 1045 but the waiter didn't even realize he had our table until 11ish at which point he stopped by to apologize and take our drink orders... 1125 we're barely seeing our first drinks and waters... so 40 min for first round, the guy didn't even know they could make drinks at the bar (ordered a margarita). Guy must've been high or this was his first night working at a restaurant because he kept screwing up simple orders and coming back to the table empty handed . It was getting pretty close to midnight so we were getting antsy as we didn't even have food at the table. I ask for a manager because it took this guy 45 min to get us drinks so at the current rate we start to believe it'll be the new year and we won't even have food at the table. It's getting pretty close to midnight and the guy was about to leave again without taking our order so I had to ask him to do so. We understand it's a busy night but very single table is being excellently catered to, except ours. Guy finally shows up... with... guess what... COLD soup... no it wasn't supposed to be cold. At this point we do get irritated and request once again to get someone who has a clue how to wait tables and follow basic protocol. It's so ridiculous that I go and personally start looking around the restaurant for a manager. She finally shows up and apologizes with some blanket excuse about being very busy... who would've guessed that a restaurant would be busy on one of the busiest nights of the year. She does promptly come back with warm soup though. By this point everyone is upset and would rather leave but it's 10 til midnight so maybe the new year will bring better service. We see every other table is getting ready for the new year toast and they're all getting champagne glasses and champagne poured... at 1155 i flag down another waiter and ask if I need to go get the champagne myself because our waiter literally just started at the table and never brought anything. I guess someone with some common sense realized what happened and tried to bring us champagne for the toast... our waiter reappears with a Prosecco bottle to pour us champagne for the midnight toast... at 12:05... yup. Food orders were wrong but so many mistakes were being made and everything by took so long that we just didn't bother sending them back for the correct ones anymore for fear of having to wait until nye2021. He didn't know which plate belonged to whom... just to name a few. I went the entire dinner without my water being refilled. Plates were rarely cleared and we practically had to get up and hand them to the waiter... so much for a nice dinner and protocol for waitstaff. 1240am and still waiting on food. Dirty glasses still on table... oh.. almost everyone else left already and the restaurant is still fully staffed. Funny thing, we were the only Mexican family in this section of the restaurant... that's about the only difference between us and all the other tables who were professionally tended to. I thought racism wasn't an issue in San Antonio anymore and I thought my money spent the same as everyone else's... I've eaten at several Michelin starred restaurants around the world and also have eaten from very precarious street vendors who've provided significantly better service than these people. Congratulations, you managed, with gargantuan incompetence, to ruin and mar a date that is usually most cherished by families. Just as incompetent as the waiter, was the manager on duty, Andrea. Instead of trying to remedy the situation by assisting the waiter or maybe rushing the drinks or any other basic hospitality "trick" to make up for the deficiencies, she simply smiled and said sorry and scurried away. A good manager makes sure the entire team is on par and keeps checking on customers, especially when there have been issues like this during the night. The valet staff had more managerial skills than this lady. Note, I did not complain to try to get discount or comp, I'm a firm believer in always paying full price for everything and tipping heavy for good service... I don't write reviews either but when you pay $650+ for a meal and you get targeted like this, it merits a review and 0 tip. read more

My boyfriend and I ate dinner here for our 7-year anniversary and we couldn't have asked for more. It was a Friday night and we ended up having the inner dining room by the windows to the pool all to ourselves. They knew it was our anniversary so the manager actually came in and turned the TV's off to provide us a more intimate ambiance. He also closed the doors to the main dining hall, effectively giving us the inner dining hall all to ourselves (it's like we had a private room reserved!). Our waiter, Alpesh, was a star. He knew exactly when to check on us, not too little and not too much. The food was absolutely delicious! My bf got the ribeye and I ordered the scallops and seabass, which were both fantastic. We also ordered the crab cakes as an appetizer, which were also delicious. The bread and butter was warm and moist and the steak and bacon fries were on point. Although the food is pricey, we got a lot of food for the price and ended up having some leftovers to take home! The drinks were also good. I ordered 2 margaritas and my bf ordered a beer. Both satisfying. To top off the night, Alpesh brought us a surprise chocolate mousse and assorted fruit with 2 champagne glasses on the house! My bf hadn't even requested it secretly. That was extremely thoughtful and topped off the night perfectly! I don't know why others were so unsatisfied, maybe it was the time of day? But Friday night dinner was amazing and Alpesh was a great server. Thank you for making our experience nothing less than perfect! read more

We just paid nearly $400 for a family of four with no alcohol. The service was terrible. We bussed our own table and had to ask repeatedly for refills. This dinner was advertised as the "New Year's Celebration". It definitely was not a celebration. Portions were terribly small which causes you to have to go back to the buffet so many times that you eventually just want to give up. We're sure the chef is talented, but his skills are masked by the poor presentation and bad service. The manager offered us a discount after our complaint...it was $50 off. This type of service and lack of professionalism tarnishes the name of the La Canterra Resort. For such a beautiful resort with amazing views, stunning architecture, and pleasing atmosphere, the restaurant did not meet the expectations set by its surroundings. Its surroundings position it for success. That said, this should be an easy fix. A note to the management: please don't be lulled into the idea of pseudo-success by your built-in customer base from hotel guests. We stayed a week at La Cantera Resort and on our last night wanted to enjoy a nice dinner. After checking out all the menus from the various restaurants at the Hotel, we decided on Sweet Fire. We dined on the patio which, despite it being August was very comfortable with fans, and the view is nice of the courtyard and hills in the distance. Our waiter, Kent, was prompt, courteous, very professional and not overbearing. He brought us fresh rolls and honey butter which went well with our red wine that we started with. We each got something different. I started off with the a salad with greens, strawberry, candied pecans and lemon pesto. It was light and a delicious. The Rigatoni with smoked chicken and roasted red bell peppers in a cream sauce was rich and flavorful. The BBQ shrimp with cheese grits was fantastic and the pork chop with mashed potatoes and a poached peach was delicious and grilled perfectly. Ended with a rich small size Tiramisu which was just enough dessert after a large meal. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more
