SweetFire Kitchen is inside the La Cantera Resort & Spa so adjust your expectations for quality and pricing accordingly ($$$). Came here for the Mothers Day brunch buffet with family, $65/pp. I have family members who come here regularly and highly recommend it, but had mixed feelings about our particular visit. FOOD- Large selection from cold bar and charcuterie (oysters, shrimp, lox, cured meats and cheeses with accompaniments) to various chef stations (carving, omelet, pancakes, fruit bowl), and a large dessert bar. Some items were stellar, like the prime rib and macarons, while others were simply better-than-expected quality for a buffet, like the eggs that were actually creamy rather than rubbery. Unfortunately, all oysters were gritty and one was flat-out bad. This is easily the most expensive buffet in town but there were mixed feelings around the table about whether it was worth the price. SERVICE- We had issues checking in for our 1PM reservation, as their system somehow showed that we'd come and gone at 10:30AM. It seems most likely that staff accidentally checked someone in under our reservation with the same first name, but took a while to resolve. Table service was less than attentive with plates piling up without being cleared in a reasonable amount of time (at one point we had five plates stacked up and waiting), while drinks stood empty for over 20 minutes and had to be requested despite staff walking around with pitchers attending exclusively to their own tables. Definitely did not meet expectations for the location, reputation, or price. Perhaps their regular meal service compares more favorably than this special event dining experience, and the regulars in our group did note that service is "usually" better. Probably the best dining option for those staying on site but not necessarily a place I'd recommend personally. read more

Totally worth getting breakfast from here (and you can't beat the view either)! My husband and I wanted to eat something light but filling so we thought it'd be a good idea to check out this place. We made reservations through open table (so glad we did) so we were seated outside right away. Service was great; our server was attentive to our needs and was quick to place our order. I ordered chocolate chip pancakes and my husband ordered the smoked pork Benedict with potato wedges. Portion size is very generous. Our food could've fed 4 people. Pancakes were fluffy but too much for us to finish. Benedict was delicious- eggs were poached perfectly. We also ordered toast with jam which was also pretty tasty. Sweetfire, I previously gave you 5 stars for your mother's day brunch, and it remains that. It's excellent. I went again this year. But I am wowed at the lack of anything for father's day. It's just a regular brunch. Do you not feel that there are wives, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters etc that would celebrate father's day the same as they would mother's day? It is literally night and day. I know I am nobody but I would really like this explained to me. It could be such a great experience just like the mother's day brunch, which has probably a majority fathers that pay for it for the mothers in their lives. This review is based on the lunch portion during restaurant week. The squash soup was definitely our favorite part of the 3 meals. It had great flavor and texture. My date had the pork belly grilled cheese for his second course. It was a sandwich, not much to say there. I had the Hazelnut Pesto pasta, it was great and good portion. Seemed like our waiter forgot about us, our plates were sitting there for some time and it took a while to get our check. Luckily someone stepped in once. Equivocating upgrade to 2.5 Stars. One word review. Overpriced. $10-$12 average drinks. Appetizers on average $10. Entrees from about $20-$40. My second time here, different meal. Unfortunately, not much different from last time. Maybe an upgrade on service during dinner service, but not worth the upgrade on prices. Surprisingly piquant *virgin strawberry daquiri, *house red wine was average. $40 *Akaushi Ribeye (medium-rare) was 12 ounces, but would have gladly taken quality over quantity. A $40 well seasoned and flavorful but partially dry Ribeye that we agreed looked more like a New York Strip. *Chef Carr's Famous Fried Chicken was tasty- after setting aside the dry, overcooked breast piece. Wish we had requested all dark meat. Those were still not worth the $16 ticket; when eaten with that perfectly paired peach jam and lovingly buttered Texas Toast, dark meat only, double the meat would have been divine. *Texas Redfish Special was delicious. Aside from the tangy sauce that overpowered and ruined the flaky tenderness, great breading, charred brussel sprouts, mini red peppers shaped like teardrops, and greens. Would have been heaven without that sauce! Appetizers + Sides (overall) were actually the best things here- *Crab Cakes (dense + tender; corn relish assed a crunch!), *Daily Soup, Sausage + Tomato Vegetable Soup (Flavorful meld in flavors, small but heartier than it looks; tiny slivers of sausage, but actually the vegetable broth was good enough on its own) *Roasted Mushrooms (tasty variety!), *Asparagus (freshly grilled!), *Macaroni & Cheese with Crab (disappointed, did not even make the effort to mix it; all the cheese was at the bottom), *Three Bean Casserole (more like a soup, good for maybe a portion of the price). As for service, they have this down pat. Double that for the ambiance. Hostess was friendly, they seem to have a three second getting rule! Charlie Gonzales (?), the lead chef there, came to meet us shortly after we were seated. More than graciously, he answered all my foodie questions. Renee, our waitress, was as friendly when she came over to take our drinks order. Our dinners came quickly enough after ordering, Chef Charlie came over a second time to check on us. In the end, a lovely place for dinner in the equally lovely La Cantera Resorts, where there are three other places to sit down dine (not including bars). I have yet to try Primero Cantina + most recently opened Grille 254, but Andrew Weissman's Signature is wonderful. Highly recommend there over here, though there is a price difference for that. That being said, I would rather save a little longer to visit Signature again than eat here. And it is right next door. Alright, so the resort is pretty large and it is a tad further than that, but you get the idea. You are indeed paying a premium for the experience here, but other places in the same resort, that does not mean it had to feel like a premium. It can and should feel like something worth doing. This is a really great spot for dinner. Not so great for breakfast. We made a reservation for dinner so we were sat immediately. I was surprised at how dead the place was at 7:30 at night. We started with the jalapeño poppers. They were very good but would have been better if they hadn't cut out the seeds. It needed a spicy kick. For my meal I got the shrimp and grits. It came with 5 huge pieces of shrimp and about 3 tbsp worth of crawfish. The dish was amazing. The shrimp were cooked in a BBQ so they had a sweet flavor but the grits had a spicy kick to them. It was a perfect mix together of sweet and spicy. My husband got the short ribs with garlic fries. The short ribs were fattier than we are used to getting but the drill had a great flavor. Breakfast here was a disaster. It's a buffet so we assumed with all the open tables we would be sat immediately. Wrong! We had to wait 25 minutes for a table. There were 6 empty tables and the hostess was refusing to seat people. When she finally did she sat two groups who had checked in after us. When we pointed this out to her, her response was "well I was going to seat you now." Im sure you were lady.... Once sat we ordered drinks and got up to get food. They had scrambled eggs that smelled like they were soaked in butter, turkey sausage that was white (never seen it that color; go with the pork instead), bacon, pastries, waffles and some fruit. I really expected a little more. There wasn't a huge selection of fruit and there wasn't yogurt anywhere. If you have a gluten allergy they have gluten free corn bread but no other bread options for you. I expected a higher quality buffet for the price. I would definitely recommend stopping in here for dinner but go elsewhere for breakfast. read more

Second time in a week I've dined here and still not that impressed. Came with family after my sister made reservations here. All I can say is the cornbread was delicious but that's about it. My husband ordered a 1/2 chicken with a baked potato and it was a 1/4 chicken. In addition to not being a 1/2 chicken as advertised, his baked potato was undercooked. My kids French fries were over fried and they didn't eat them. Which is saying a lot because what kid doesn't love fries?? I ordered the crunchy salad. The lettuce tasted wilted and not at all fresh. I ordered the crab beignets and tasted mostly salt, and I'm not sensitive to salt at all. Also, I found a hair in my frisée salad. Gross. They brought me a new plate but again, super salty dish and over fried beignets. I think I've learned my lesson with this place and will not be back. read more

Sweet fire kitchen was a big disappointment however, our server Hailey was great! She went above and beyond and even had her manager comp our appetizer bc my entree was missing the andouille sausage and the crawfish that was supposed to be in the dish. It literally only had 3 pieces of shrimp in the whole dish. But the crawfish beignet appetizer was amazing!! My husband ordered shrimp and grits for dinner and the sausage was missing that as well so I'm guessing they just ran out. We tried sweet fire again the next morning for breakfast and was disappointed again. The cheddar biscuits were cold, hard and tasteless. Don't you dare eat them without a glass of water nearby. Their timing and flow of the dinner was disjointed. -we got seated at dirty tables and no one came until we asked the hostess about our server and they didn't clean the table until we asked -the main course came before the appetizers -the steak was dry and overcooked -ordered crab legs. The ice was melted in the serving tray so the legs were waterlogged -they spilled stuff while clearing the main course off and didn't clean it up until asked We wanted to like this place. The food was so so. The view was great though with outside seating. We still tipped well since the server needs it, but man, we won't be coming back. I do hope management reads this. read more

Checked this out twice for lunch for restaurant week last time and again today. Very impressed with the quality of food and service. Felt very full with both visits. Today, my husband and I both had the pork belly on Texas toast. Mine was really tender though my husband had a few dry pieces. Dessert was both beautiful to look at and tasted light and delicious - root beer float cheesecake. It had a layer of ganache to cover the domed dessert. Highly recommended! I recently stayed at the resort, and ate here twice. Once for dinner, and once for breakfast. For dinner, I ordered the mushroom ravioli with butternut squash. The waiter informed me that it wasn't actually pasta, but zucchini rolls. I decided to go ahead and try it anyway. And it was outstanding! I'm not even a vegetarian, but I absolutely loved this dish. I love when vegetables are treated well by chefs. I was so surprised by how good it was. I also had the hush puppies, and they were just okay, I'm very sweet. For breakfast I had the avocado toast, And it came with a ludicrous amount of avocado. Like an absolutely unnecessary amount of avocado. Which is really generous of them. The mustarda on top was also very flavorful, and a great addition. If the weather is nice, and you can sit outside, the views into the courtyard are gorgeous. The service is a little slow, but not terrible. I don't know that I would make the track all the way up here if I wasn't staying at the resort. But if you are staying there, it's a really great option. read more

My cornbread wasn't complementary and had added jalapeños on top. When server recommended cornbread as a favorite item with honey - it's the reason we came to the restaurant since the photos looked so appealing. Instead of the cast iron skillet with honey on THE side - it was two squares of cornbread with jalapeños inside and on top with honey already drizzled on the top. I assumed the honey would be on the side like photos. My child does not like jalapeños or honey and therefore did not eat it. It did not look as advertised through photo reviews and cost $7. Apparently there are two options of corn bread. One is complementary and one is upgraded. I was already given the one with jalapeños so just pushed it aside and enjoyed the rest of meal instead. We ordered a selection of items from appetizers and sides. The addition of a simple pasta or risotto dish to the menu would have increased my rating. We ordered a flatbread with heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella, which was good. Pimento ricotta with flatbread was okay; the flatbread got hard when cold. The spinach salad was good but small. The braised carrots dish was bland. The buffet breakfast was good. An espresso or cappuccino would have made it great, but those were not on offer. Our family decided to take the Dads here for Father's Day Brunch this year, and it was hands down well worth it. They had a wonderful buffet spread with a variety of brunch items like Chicken and waffles, eggs, bacon, chicken sausage, Mac n cheese, mash potatoes, some sort of amazing chunk of meat , salad bar, parfait bar, omelet station, dessert station and so much more. I loved the fact that they had things in small chafing dishes, so items were not sitting there for a long period of time getting hard or dry. The waffles were fresh, right off the grill, and the meat was being hand cut and served to you. The omelet station was 100% the go-to! They had a great selection of veggies and meats with cheese, but it was not even that. It was just how genuinely friendly the cook was. We had a whole conversation, and by the time he finished mine and my husband's omelets, it's like I was telling my cousin bye. I think that's what really made this place so great. The staff! Our waiter was the most amazing person! Not only was he on it with our whole party but he was so calm, collective, super nice and again just made us feel sooo comfortable! He made all of our Dads feel extra special and was so patient with my fussy and picky 3 yr old. He talked to my 16 yr old like they were best friends and treated my mother in law like a queen. He just had the best, most genuinely positive vibe. You can tell that he's just one of those really good people. He was so good to us, we have already added a reminder in our calendar to reserve our table for Mothers day and also request him as our waiter. This place is like a hidden gem! I met a friend here for breakfast on a weekday so, perfect to avoid a crowd. We were seated right away and next to the large windows over looking the pool which, was a nice view to chat, catch up and enjoy our mimosas! We both opted to try the buffet since it had a variety of items to try, including an omelette station, as this was our first visit. Our waitress was nice, attentive and we were able to have our valet tickets stamped (which saved about $5 off parking). We will be back! read more

I was part of a party of 5 (family with 2 young children) and ate at SweetFire Kitchen for Mother's Day. I made the reservation at the last minute, and didn't adequately research the "Mother's Day Brunch" in advance, so that was my own mistake. I enjoy fine dining, and was surprised at the $75 per adult, and $35 per child cost, especially for it not to include their signature ($9) drink. I don't mind paying that, but the subpar flavor did not, in my opinion, support that price point. The table in which we were seated had not been properly cleaned, as there was food all over one of the seats and all over the floor. Our server was kind, but service was very slow. The flavor of the food was disappointing, as it was a typical hotel breakfast buffet fare. Overall, I did not enjoy my experience at SweetFire. The resort, however, is beautiful. read more

LaCantera charged $75 per adult for dumpy food. Basically fast food quality at PREMIUM Prices. The food did not look or taste fresh for a $75 per person brunch. Our server was kind & helpful. Completely & utterly disappointed in La Cantera. They should be embarrassed to charge the prices they do for a sub par restaurant. Definitely not a 4 star experience. read more

Unfortunately, this resort has limited options for meals, but fortunately, SweetFire Kitchen had quality options. Although maybe a bit expensive the team members and food were outstanding...being I ate there every meal for a week! Everything from the hamburger, steaks, and the gulf fish (outstanding and huge portion) was well prepared and delicious. However, the aspect that stuck out most for me was the bartenders. Being I travel weekly alone the ability to have a good conversation with is often important and maybe more important when they know someone isn't maybe in the mood to talk. Every bartender was outstanding, and honestly, each one had exceptional skills at creating craft cocktails. They were also excited about the ability to give them the freedom to make whatever they felt like that night for me to drink and I wasn't once disappointed. I came here for Valentine's Day with my fiancé. The restaurant is located inside the hotel to the left and in the back (Had to ask the front where it was located). We had reservations for 9PM, at 8:45 it was busy! We had to wait a little but got drinks at the bar and shortly after we were seated. The place looked nice and clean. But the service was terrible! Being a busy night, it seemed they were understaffed. And most were inattentive. We waited a good 10min before we had to flag someone down just to give us water. The waiter said he wasn't our waiter he was going to get her. She seemed indifferent and didn't check on us. I had the seafood rice pilaf and my fiancé had the salmon. The food was mediocre. We also got the lobster Mac n cheese which had plenty of lobster! but the Mac n cheese was very bland. I think the best part of our dinner was the truffle fries and it was a decent size. Would recommend! For dessert we had the triple chocolate cake - a little on the dry side. Nothing special. We did not have a good first experience here. Maybe their lunch menu is better?? Pretty disappointing experience at this La Cantera Resort restaurant. It is absolutely beautiful and the large fans outside made it very comfortable despite the heat wave here in Central Texas. They, like everywhere, were understaffed so a solid third of the restaurant was empty but the wait was only 30 minutes on a Saturday night so nothing much to complain about. We had the coconut shrimp, Cesar salad with grilled chicken, grilled asparagus, and the salmon. Coconut shrimp - good crunch to the coconut coating and beautiful plate but overall lacked flavor other than "old fryer grease" Cesar salad - chicken was moist. The Romaine was crisp, not chopped full leafs. Dressing tasted good. The croutons, which I feel are very critical to a Cesar salad were sweet, soft and buttery. Individually they would have been pretty good but the flavor profile did not match a Cesar salad with grilled chicken in the slightest. Grilled asparagus - best part of the meal. Delicious flavor. Perfectly coooked Salmon - complete disappointment. Not only was the flavor lacking but the salmon was completely over cooked. It chewed like chicken breast rather than flaky smooth salmon. Thanksgiving dinner - food generally not hot, or even warm. Food was unacceptable to the degree that two adults in our group elected not to eat after a few bites. Of course, the full $75pp charge was still required. Dessert items seemed stale/hardened. Stuffing was so sticky that guests in line resorted to using their fingers to free the serving from the serving spoon. Unsanitary. Charged for self-parking, but after completing the online parking payment to a third-party online vendor, discovered there was actually no charge to self-park, and no one at the resort told us. read more
