Hands-down the best food we've had in Alaska; and maybe the best street tacos ever! We have been living in Alaska for a couple of years now, and Swell Taco in Homer is officially our favorite spot. The location is beautiful, featuring a very cute outdoor setup right on the ocean with amazing views. Even though they were busy with a long line, the service was outstanding, kind, warm, and engaging. They were incredibly thorough, and our order came out exactly right. I also noticed that everything coming out to other tables looked consistently spot-on, with everyone around us loving their food. As someone who eats gluten-free, the fact that 80% of their menu is GF was phenomenal, and it actually tastes incredible! Their corn tortillas are genuinely the best I have had anywhere. Their flavor combinations are extremely well thought out and expertly executed. We tried the fried rockfish, the halibut cheek, and the Carne Asada. The fish-based tacos were lovely, as the texture was perfect. The flavor profile on the Carne Asada was actually my favorite of the three, but the meat itself was just a little too tough for my full appreciation. Still, the seasonings on all three tacos were absolute perfection. Do not skip the coconut limeade! It was such a treat: perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and very well done. Cruised down to Homer spit today. It's been at least 10+ yrs since the last time I was there. Some new things in town. But the spit pretty much looks the same. Ate some tacos at Swell Taco. Birria tacos were delish. Packed with meat. And the consume was warm and savory. Steak taco was a little tough. Generous portion of meat. Needed salt. The pickled onions gave it a nice tang. Coconut limeade was refreshing and yummy. The hibiscus agua fresca wasn't my cup of tea. Lacked flavor. Service was great, but our food took a while to come out. This place opened in May of 2022 and filled a need for a Mexi-Cali taco joint in Homer. It's one of the walk up shops along the spit so you can eat at the picnic tables, or take your food to go back to your lodging or have a picnic on the beach. Since Homer is back to being insanely busy on the weekends in summer it's nice to have food options that don't require reservations. It was a Friday & I couldn't get into the 5 sit down places I called, and while I should know better I didn't know if we were staying in town that day lol. Swell came to our rescue with some yummy tacos. We ordered the rockfish, halibut cheek, carne asada tacos, and the ceviche. All the tacos were delicious with the favorite being the rockfish taco. The corn tortillas are made in house & didn't fall apart even though the tacos were loaded up with toppings. They had a great hot sauce selection including many flavors of the local barnacle kelp hot sauce. It would be nice to see an in house salsa or hot sauce that can be added onto the tacos. The tacos were delicious my favorite being the rockfish & halibut cheek. The carne asada was good, but not as flavorful as the fish taco options. The ceviche was loaded with fresh caught fish, but the flavors were pretty bland. Definitely could've used some more salt. Service was quick & friendly. The food didn't take long to be made even though there were plenty of customers. I hope they could serve some beer here in the future as it would go great with the tacos! The rockfish taco at Swell Tacos is the best fish taco that we've ever had! We also ordered the carne asada taco, halibut taco, and an order of chips with guac. They were all very, very good but the rockfish really stood out! Swell Taco is located on the spit so it's in a cool spot but in the heart of tourist season it probably gets super busy! Seating is outside but there is overhead covering if the weather gets rainy. The rockfish taco was fried perfectly and had great flavor. The chipotle cream was a delicious addition to the taco as well. The other two tacos were also delicious - great seasoning and sauces to go with each that really elevated them.
