I'm in town staying with a friend who lives down the street from this bakery. They have a pretty decent selection for being a tiny location. There are maybe six seats inside, so I can imagine it getting crowded at times. Today is the third day in a row I've walked over for an iced latte and croissant. Even when traveling I try to avoid Starbucks for my coffee fix. The Ham & Swiss and Ticinese croissants are great! Perfectly crusty on the outside with warm, delicious fillings. I was lucky enough to score one fresh out of the oven. It was gone before I crossed the street to walk home. I've only had French croissants in the past, so I'm no expert on Swiss pastries, but three times in three days has to mean something. The employees are so sweet. They gave my goddaughter a balloon for becoming a big sister on Sunday. On Monday they gave her a replacement balloon after finding out the first one flew out the car window. Totally made her day. I never got the pushy employee feel as others have stated on here. The only downside is the coffee tends to be a bit inconsistent. The latte I had yesterday tasted like chocolate milk. Thankfully they got it right today. Such a cute neighborhood spot, definitely worth trying for a yummy breakfast to go. read more

Funny little place in the train station. Things look pretty good, though they are just OK to eat. The presentation is great. I had a little quiche they offered to heat it up, which was good, cause it must have been frozen, cause once it was heated it was only cold. I like little places like this, and it could be quite good. I would give it another chance some time if I am back in town. read more

What a great tiny shop- a definite European coffee and " donut" place. Since I have not had such treats to exactly compare all I can say this place is a wonderful treat. When I try a new place I like to get a few new things to figure it all out. On the journey I got the choco weggli, zöpfili and the Berliners. This location alone is wonderfully adorable. Right on the commuter rail stop like literally the place shook a little when the train came through. The goodies range from quiche, croissants( of many varieties) and these great Swiss " donuts". Many other treats I can not pronounce and thankfully the women behind the counter was of great help. The doughs I would give a hint to a brioche, the little nugget of goodness of choco wiggle was Devine. Don't forget to have a coffee!! I do not know the brand they use but this was the best coffee I have had in a long time. They do have another location in Allston and I have been told by a friend there is one in Cambridge around Harvard . So plenty of opportunities to get more goodies. read more

Went to this place for the first time today since I live 2 towns over. Everything looked incredible but unlike other bakeries it also tasted just as incredible!! After moving here last summer, this was one of the first places my kids wanted to go check out. They loved the animal themed rolls, the hot chocolate and the croissants. The ham and cheese croissant is good, but I felt that there could've been a bit more of ham and cheese inside of it. Their pretzel baguettes are outstanding and are good plain or sliced to make a sandwich. However, their coffee is too bitter for me. I usually take one Splenda and I tried to add another and cream, but it was still too strong. I detected notes of dark chocolate in the coffee but it needed something to cut that bitterness. However, if you go to the train station on a cold, winter morning and are still trying to wake up...this cup of coffee will most likely get the job done! read more

I love this place, Real swiss feel to it, it reminds me of the shops back at home growing up. The baked sweets are delicious, and being able to order a bread that actually deserves the name bread is just amazing. Always a pleasure to stop by and get a cup of "Kafi Creme" accompanied by a Nussgipfel. read more

My wife loved the Raspberry croissants and so do I! There is a very wide selection of treats and you will not go wrong with any one of them. Personally,for a sit down and eat type of place, its a bit tight but if you are in the area and want some awesome pastries for home or for the family, this is it! The other day I got off the train and noticed they were open later than they had been previously. I stopped in to see if they might have any sandwich-type bread I could use to make a quick dinner at home. I ended up leaving with two different loaves of amazing baguette-style bread, two Swiss Energy Rolls, and two Berliners (which were given to me on-the-house because, after all, I needed something sweet, right?) They are selling from now through Christmas Eve at the Downtown Crossing Holiday Market, and boy am I thankful for that! I bought a Berliner, a raspberry filled jelly donut (in honor of Hanukkah) and it was FANTASTIC. Light, chewy, coated in sugar, and fantastic REAL jam. Not gooey fake stuff. The Berliners also come filled with chocolate, apricot, as well as plain. My boyfriend had the chocolate croissant, also quite lovely, very flaky and filled with really good quality chocolate. Ok - so this bakery and the food used to be incredible. But once they got too big for that location and expanded their operations the Reading location is now like the forgotten step child. The food is trucked in to this location instead of baked on site. The freshness is no longer as great. The service has always been good - pushy and a bit over the top, but I always felt like they cared (even if a bit phony) about their customers. Lately though the staff seems very disorganized and distracted and the shop is messy, out of favorite items, and disappointing. Today I ordered two ham and swiss croissants and they were both cold even though they were sitting on the warming tray. The tray must not have been turned on when they opened. (disorganization) And I felt like it would put them over the edge if I asked to have them heated up. In addition, they flavor and freshness was just so disappointing. There is a new computer system in place and the staff was more concerned about that than filling orders and customer satisfaction. The woman ahead of me ordered coffee and something to eat - both to go. She got her food, but not her coffee until after I was served and someone else who came in after me. Perhaps the morning rush is not a good time to be training someone on the new cash register/computer system. I was asked several questions more than once because the focus was on the computer system and not the customer and they did not remember asking the question the first time, nor the fact that I answered them already. I think I have to stop going there because my expectations - the ones they created in the beginning - are no longer met. read more

Great Location inside of the old train depot and they open at 5:30 on weekdays but close by 4. Inside it is very bright,modern and clean feel, but nothing like an artisan with the local and organic ingredients and a view of the bakery. This is just a store front but the kitchen is down below. The pastry selection includes croissants , berliners and sweet rolls. All looked and tasted good, but pricy. The Coffee is unlike the pastry . It tasted very acidic and bitter yet not very stong. They use high quality beans but it sure did not taste it. A medium which was more like a small was priced at $1.75 . Would like some better coffee options and prices! This is definitely a great place to a get a treat in the morning. read more

Excellent. All kinds of croissants, European pastries, pretzels and such. Only a couple of tables, yet it is still a good place for breakfast, not just taking the goods out. If you spend $20 or more they give you a fancy bag to carry your purchase away and it entitles you to discounts next time you purchase (they will explain you how that works). read more

A little pricey, but definitely the best bread I've ever had. I used to come here at least once a week for the sandwich rolls, which are so flavorful, that you can eat them plain, without butter or anything on them. I had the chocolate hazelnut cake for my birthday last year, instead of anything with icing or layers or whatnot, and it was a big hit in my house. The owners are super-friendly, too! after hearing a lot of good things about this place from various people we finally decided to try it this morning. I will say, I was hesitant after reading some not so great reviews here (about an overly friendly owner and costly items).. but we decided to try it anyways. We walked in and were greeted by two very nice women. We bought 2 Choco Weggli's, one large pretzel and a drink. We paid $8 altogether, which we thought was very reasonable. The Choco Weggli's were delicious - a great alternative to a chocolate chip muffin.. and it seemed lighter/healthier. The pretzel was good too - different than any other pretzel I'd tasted before. It was more doughy, more delicious and perfectly salted. Had we gotten one right out of the oven it probably would've been heavenly. The only downside is after eating it, my stomach feels very full/heavy.. probably because of all the carbs i just ingested.. this place is not good for the carb conscience. read more

First of all, the employees were very friendly and helpful. We were disappointed with quality of items, since they did not appear that they were baked that morning, even though we were told they were. Not sure if this is the Swiss style of baking, but the baked goods were dense, not light and fluffy. The pricing was a little steep $3.50 -$4.95 for filled croissants. I live nearby and go here often, the muesli is very good! Coffee is decent and people are friendly. However my girlfriend has gone a couple other times and have gotten what tastes like a stale pastry that wasn't fresh. read more

I've been popping in and out of here since they opened. The "Berliners" (their version of a doughnut) are light and delicious. As are the pretzel rolls, keesh and croissants. My review with concur with others: their service is extremely pushy. No matter what you order - you're pressured to buy more items. And it's worded in such a way that makes it seem like you have no choice. In fairness, I've noticed that this has improved somewhat this year (especially when the owner isn't working, he's clearly hard working but he's obnoxious with his "hard sell" attempts). Swissbakers aren't my first choice because of dance you're forced to do every single visit and it's pricey for the portions- but the food is always fresh and the location at the train station makes it a convenient treat every once and a while. read more

The rating: Four and a half stars. Just a hiccup from perfect. Why we chose to eat here: Sarah's choice, and a great one. We were in the area for an appointment and I was starving. The food: Overall we both loved the food. The quality love and care was evident in most everything we ate so I'll just start with my favorite and work downward. The ham and cheese croissants were amazing, seriously amazing. Ours were fresh from the oven so I suppose if they sat for a bit they may not be quite so amazing. But my experience was one of near perfection, and we are talking ham cheese and bread. The croissant had just the right crunch, the cheese just a little bit melty, and the ham was just warmed through. It just all worked. I should have gotten three of these things. Sarah thoroughly agrees with me on this. Second for me was the ham and cheese with mustard on a pretzel baguette. Another win for Swiss Bakers, and the final proof I need that a pretzel roll is one of the finest and possibly most underutilized rolls in sandwich making. Soft and yielding but still strong enough to hold up under intense situations (situations much more intense than my simple sandwich). I would have liked a little salt on top but regardless, a great roll. The ham and cheese was tasty and ample. If I had not experienced the croissant at all I would have enjoyed it all the more, but that doesn't take away the fact that it was still very good. Sarah also had a Chocolate Weggli. Her words exactly are "like you would expect chocolate chip bread to be like, but better, and not like a muffin at all". I tried a bite and like everything else it was delicious. It also had plenty of chocolate chips running all throughout. Now we come to the hiccup. The Chocolate Berliner. This is basically a sugar raised donut that was to be filled with chocolate. The donut itself was very good, doughy, and sweet, but there was a distinct lack of chocolate. In fact, and I apologize for the crass way of putting this, but the chocolate content in the Berliner was no more than a small brown skid mark inside of it. Literally that was it, not enough chocolate to make a single M & M. If not for this, I would have loved to give Swiss Bakers five stars. The service: Fantastic service. The girl at the counter was professional, changed her gloves a few times during the prep and bagging of our goodies, and made my sandwich with actual care. The place was extremely clean, neat and organized. The owner was there and was super friendly. Asked how I liked everything, had I been before, etcetera. Seemed like a genuinely nice guy. It is nice to see someone take so much pride in his business. The final rundown: I would come back in a heartbeat for the ham and cheese croissant alone. I really did love this place, and when they open their larger facility in Allston, I will be by to see what other treats they put on the menu. Just please, add chocolate to your Berliner and I'll be happy to upgrade you, I know you deserve it. read more

I know this bakery because if their booth @DeweySquare Farmers Market. Always good & fresh quality baked treats. We used a $50. Groupon to cater a family party. Everyone enjoyed the buttery & flakey cinnamon rolls and all 3 types of quiche but the veggie was the favorite despite finding a staple baked into 1 of the 3 quiche Yikes! I had originally ordered 4 quiche but due to a snafu on their part there was only 3 set aside for our order. I'm a fan or their baked goods but most def not their coffee which has a very strange (bad) acidic aftertaste like a cheap coffee often does. So if you're a fan of Maxwell House or similar bad coffee you'll enjoy their cuppa - else buy baked treats here & coffee elsewhere. read more

I've never been to the store in person; the Swiss bakers themselves come to our farmer's market in Lexington. Their pastries are just excellent; some in particular that I like are the Chocolate Weggli (mmmmm....), the almond croissant, and the raspberry berliner. The guys who work the register are really sweet and friendly, as well! And the pastries are really quite reasonable, considering the quality. read more
