I just got back from the Euroguild (German) market in Walpole. They have many items to choose from if you enjoy European cuisine, including goodies from Swissbakers in Reading. I bought an almond croisant from Swissbakers and it was TO DIE FOR ! I didn't get any bread and I am regretting it immensely! This bakery is awesome!! Bought a groupon for this bakery because I had guests over this weekend and thought it will be nice to give it a try and am glad I did. Service was amazing and food was delicious!! Their specialties are the Berliners but only bad thing about them is that they are fried but so good and way better than a doughnut! Their croissants are always in high demand and ran out of the ham and Swiss too fast so I couldn't try them. I recommend this place for every item they have. Will definitely go back!! read more

Excellent food, friendly staff, bright clean store - what could be better? Great bread. My favorite is the Choco Weggli, a bread roll with chocolate chips. Split it and smear with real butter for an extra treat. Donuts are good - better than DD. Swiss Sin is another family favorite. Highly recommended. read more

A late train can be an unexpected gift when it means finding the best bakery around. I entered the Swissbakers at the Reading depot to get a cup of coffee that chilly morning and ended up tasting a sampling of an apple tart. It was so delicious that I ordered one for Thanksgiving. Living in Germany for almost three years, I was spoiled by the freshly baked breads and pastries. I loved the fact that you could actually taste the fruit, not just the sugar! My favorite baked goods were the pretzels. American made soft pretzels just didn't come close. The pretzels here are just as I remembered, perfect and fantastic! Try one and you will be hooked. The owners/staff are warm and friendly. This bakery is a real gem and well worth a visit. read more

Pretzel rolls are amazing and a great lunch box item for kids. Service is also equally good. I tried the party pretzel (very flavorful), the chocolate hazelnut cake, their baguette, and a chocolate nutmeg cookie. All delicious. read more

We love this bakery! We've tried just about everything at this point, and it's all very good. I love the fact that the breads are all made with simple natural ingredients. Our personal favorites are the Challah bread (which makes amazing french toast!) and the Pajazzo, which is similar to a rustic baguette (perfect with soups and pasta). I really, really hope they do well in this location, as their Berliners (jelly donuts) are within walking distance of our house :) read more

Even though the price is a little high, the swiss bakery might have some of the best pastries that I have ever had.

They are a bit pricey and they don't have an enormous selection but I haven't had a bad thing yet from this place. Such a breath of fresh air among the land of Italian bakeries. We love the chocolate wegglies (like a bun with chocolate chips in it) and the Swiss donuts. read more

when i first walked in there was literally two places to sit not very much seating. so your going there and there is a place to sit there. and it very loud music you can barely hear the people and they cant here you. but there friendly. my dad had no idea how to order. glad they have the sheets of paper you can take. the food is good i was sold on the sandwhich i had and i got pasty so that was good. read more

What a lovely place for takeout! I'd give it 5 stars except for the facts that they have virtually no room to sit and eat inside and that I arrived at 11:30AM intending to eat lunch and they were already out of a lot of items and don't make more since they close at 2PM. The staff was friendy and helpful and what I did get to try was wonderful though. The cinnamon berliner was soft and pillowy with just the right amount of sweetness, the pretzel roll sandwich was generously filled with fresh ingredients, the croissant was flaky and warm and the choco weggli was recommended by the staff and delicious. The linzer cookies were to die for...both the American and Swiss versions...no other bakery can compare for these items. I'll definitely return...just take my tip to arrive early! read more

This is a good bakery, though the hours really only work if you're trying to catch a train in the morning because it is right at the train station. The croissants are very good - both the chocolate filled and the cinnamon. Though they are a little bit on the small side for $2.75 each. The Berliner is also really good - a pretzel shaped pastry that almost tastes a little bit like friend dough. This, on the other hand, is huge and well worth the price. The staff is very friendly - especially with it being so early in the morning. They greet you right away and are very helpful. They also offer bread, coffee, and catering options. read more

Amazing sandwiches! We ran in just a half hour before they closed and the staff member on hand was super helpful. This was our first time there and we wanted to try a few things. The ready-made sandwiches were fantastic. Coffee was good even for the end of the day. We took two choco weggli rolls to go and warmed them up when we got home. Also delicious! Such an unpleasant experience! A pompous salesman, a dense croissant, a greasy chocolate donut with hardly any filling, a stale mealy cookie and then, to top it all off, an inconvenient set-up (I am short and the register I was being rung up at was in the middle of an enormous and high glass enclosure. The pushy arrogant guy tried to make light of having to come around to the end of the counter where we could do our 'transaction' at a 'more comfortable' height. Would not have been such a chaotic exchange if that were not where the other register is, which had its own customers who were, understandibly, not too happy to be inconvenienced themselves. Maybe it would have gone better if the very personable young lady behind the counter helped me out, but nothing could have improved the crappy food. read more

I want to start by saying that I have been here twice and both times it was just okay at best. I don't really see what the fuss is about. The owner seems nice enough and greeted us both times we were there. The first time I went Me and my daugther sat down and had coffee and a pastry but to be honest I wasn't blown away, I didn't want to come home empty handed so we brought some pastry for my husband and son, this again wasn't fantastic and to make matters worse it cost me about $25 which I thought was extremly high. The last time I went I wanted to try there hot chocolate. I figured it would be delicous, made with Swiss chocolate and real cream. Imagine my surprise when I watched the young lady making my hot chocolate pull out a large jar of Nestle Quick and add it to the steamed milk!!! Are you serious???? And they charge almost $3 or more for each hot chocolate, if I knew they were going to use Nesquick I woulld have made it at home. What a rip off, trust me unless you absolutely have to go here don't. Everything is way too expensive and it's just not worth the money. read more

I am a regular at the Allston location and REALLY love the place. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Reading location and highly recommend it as well. The Reading location is much smaller, but it has the same great quality "not-too-sweet" pastries and many "healthier" food options as well including fresh sandwiches on pretzel rolls or your choice of other breads, soups, quiches, and more. There are a few tables inside as well as outside. The Reading location also had a really great guy behind the counter named Eli. I brought a friend who had never been to SwissBakers, and we asked a lot of questions. Eli enthusiastically welcomed us and thoroughly (and patiently) answered all of our questions and treated us really well. All of the baked goods are freshly baked with no preservatives. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality makes it worth it. PLUS--there are often Groupon or other deals available.
