An Australian-inspired independant cafe, Sydney is a great addition to the State House/Amtrak area! The space is clean and bright, although a bit corporate and sterile. They have an on-site kitchen that serves breakfast and lunch, but it does close soon after lunch. If you come by after 2pm, you'll have to make your selections from the cold case. Really good sandwiches and pastries. The roasted turkey sandwich (pressed) was very tasty, although it was still cold in the middle as it came out of the cold case. The bread pudding (pear and almond) was also very tasty. They use Illy coffee, which is not bad, but is not great either. I can walk down the street to The Cheesecake Factory and get Illy. I would love to see them use start using some locally roasted beans, or bring some West Coast roasters' beans in. Stopped by for a quick lunch after our tour at Brown. I'm unsure of a word to describe the overall experience, so here are some thoughts. 1. The avocado toast was delicious! Great texture, lime flavor, seasoning, and combination of feta/tomato/sprout. Would definitely recommend. 2. A pesky fly was crawling over the baked goods but nobody working seemed to notice/ care. 3. While ordering, the lady helping us seemed harsh and cold, kind of like she didn't want us there, especially since we asked a few questions about the menu. Awkward... 4. A beautiful cafe with wonderful staff and a pretty good size menu! We tried the avocado smash and I ordered a hot cocoa (one of my all time favorite drinks). When I asked for marshmallows (because what's a hot cocoa without marshmallows?!), they made an off the menu/still in the works version of a crazy hot cocoa for me. It was amazing and I'm so excited to come back for more! The avocado smash was fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. However, it was a little difficult to eat. A butter knife is tough to work with through that crust. I would have loved to try a poached egg on top, but they had run out - which is awesome that they were so busy! I will return to try it. It seems as though the process for signing up for the rewards system takes up some time - I didn't mind waiting at all, but I felt as though I was holding up the line. Maybe having a free standing tablet would be a better option for this. There are a lot of different seating options - a community table, window seats, regular small tables. I'd love to see potential outdoor seating in the warmer weather here. There's not much space, but if they could fit a table or two on the sidewalk it would be so nice! Biggest downfall of this spot is the parking, I think. We drove around for about 10 minutes, which really wasn't bad for a Saturday morning, but I can see it being tougher if there's an event happening. This is definitely one of my new favorite spots in downtown. Came after yoga with my gf (yes very basic) and we got avo toast (at MINIMIMUM a half an avo, feta, cherry tomatoes, microgreens on thick cut multigrain bread) with a poached egg (perfect yoke, soft but not runny). LOVE Sydney! The food here is delicious and so beautifully plated. I've tried their sandwiches and salads, both were great. My husband loves the avocado toast, definitely a crowd pleaser. I knocked my review down one star because I wish their breakfast was served all day. There are many breakfast items I'd love to try but haven't been able to make it there before 12. I'd also say the food here is a bit on the pricier side than most places. Lunch here can easily come to $30. The pastries always seem to be changing and they all look delicious. Coffee here is great as well. The atmosphere inside is very warm and friendly. There's many people grabbing lunch or studying for school. This is an absolutely gorgeous space - that's a bit hard to find, with an awful parking situation. We stopped in Sunday, just as breakfast turned over to lunch. We could still get the avo toast, but not the poached egg in top. One of us got the toast with lox. Beautifully presented with halved red and purple grape tomatoes on top; he said it was tasty. I had a gorgeous seasonal salad with beets & goat cheese served on "spring mix" greens - quite good, again with a stunning presentation to add to the experience. Regrettably, the roasted broccoli sandwich was less successful. My friend said there was zero char on the vegetable - claiming it therefore wasn't "roasted" - and that the aioli overpowered everything. She left half on her plate. The fourth in our party had the chicken Cesar - basic looking, with a report of slightly dry chicken. I will definitely be back; they probably won't. Oops. Next time I try the coffee! The only seating for 4 was at the head of the shared table. We could talk, but I think we disturbed the student types settled in with their computers. I'm fine with communal space, but please engage just a little if you sit down right next to a group that's laughing and talking! Also, patrons can't hear their names called from the counter to pick up their food when the restaurant is busy. This place is so awesome! We came on a Sunday after church, probably around 12/1230. It was jamming. There was a long line and no seats but we decided to be brave and trust that seats would open by the time our food came out. Even after getting our food there were still no seats. This was highly frustrating because most of the seats were taken by students working on projects or in a group chatting with their friends with empty plates and cups in front of them. It's not the fault of the establishment but I wish there was some way to stop that. We had to resort to awkwardly glaring at people who were clearly done in order to get people to be a little respectful and let us sit. Even as we ate we watched other students come in and kind of take over the whole place. While we were eating the girls across from us made a plan to steal our spot as soon as we left so they could have closer access to the outlet on the wall. (We were in the middle table so that still sounds like a trip hazard). Anyways- the food! I had the avocado smashed toast and a cup of tomato soup. So delicious! I may have been trying to replicate the toast since then because i want to eat it every day. The tomato soup was smoky and different than what I'm used to for a tomato soup but very delicious! My friend had the turkey sandwich and really enjoyed it. What I want to go back for: ricotta toast and the espresso over gelato?!?! Whattt?! Yes. So many things. Everything looked so good. The space inside is a great size, bright and airy. The staff was super friendly even with the crazy line. If they could find a way to control the squatters I'd be back more frequently but sadly I'll probably just save this place for off hours since I'd rather sit and eat (I don't live in the city so not as fun to take it to go). A cute place in downtown prov-- reminds me of a place you'd find in nyc. This place is adorable and quaint, but because of how quaint it is, seating is often times limited. If you come solo, there is seating along the window edge; but if you come with someone, it could be inconvenient to find a spot. They offer very good specialty drinks, and during the fall, I HIGHLY recommend the spiced apple cider. Also, the blue algae lemonade is good in the summer. KOMBUCHA on tap is absolutely delicious!! It's very flavorful and doesn't taste like vinegar. The avocado smash is my usual go-to, and although it's a tad pricey for avocado toast, you do get your money's worth. I ordered a sandwich without prosciutto and said i'm a vegetarian but they gave it to me with it which wasn't a big deal because it happens. Beautiful and amazing. As in you feel beautiful and amazing just walking and stopping by this place. A must stop by if you need a place to sit after getting to the train station. I looked for a place to have some breakfast after coming in from the train station. The staff here is so nice and was able to talk through the menu. I could sense that they were super passionate about the cafe and loved working here. I had the brekkie bowl and a cup of coffee and then sat down to do some work here. Brekkie bowl - highly recommended! Love the lemon curd mixed in with all the fixings in a yogurt bowl. The pastries also looked quite fabulous, though I didn't indulge. Free wifi and has lots of tables for working. Only thing I would improve about this place is that the chairs can be wobbly! Loved this place! It's clean and inviting inside with cute decoration but not too much. They have a good selection of pastries, that are intriguing but not too many. Solid options for lunch and breakfast. I chose the avocado smash and as you've read it's delicious go for it. I didn't make it for "breakfast" so I wasnt able to get an egg but not entirely sure it needed it at all. It has plenty of avocado and toppings as is. I also got a lemon macaron. Seriously. If they have any macaron. Get it. They were soft on the inside crunchy on the out and a nice cream inside. You can tell it was super fresh and just made. One of the better ones I've had and unlike chain places that can get hard sitting out for a day or two these were made that morning. I also had a cafe au lait with almond milk. Found this place by searching for breakfast places nearby. I really love café places so I decided to try it out. This was in walking distance of the hotel we stayed at so we walked. Once you walk in you're greeted by lovely staff. The place is decorated very nice and has the vibe of a café. You order at the register then find a place to sit. They will call you up by your name for the food you order or they will sometimes bring it to you. Definitely sign up with the rewards program since the place can be pricey. You get percentages off and a few dollars off your next purchase if you do. I ordered (since it was lunch time) a turkey sandwich and a matcha latte. You have the option to get your sandwich pressed (toasted) so that's what I did. The sandwich is amazing. Everything in the sandwich really compliments each other. There were tomatoes in the sandwich and usually I'm not a fan of tomatoes but I admit the fruit mixed in well. The iced matcha latte is what you expect it to taste like. Just matcha mixed with milk, I think next time I'd try an actual coffee. I wouldn't get the matcha latte again. My boyfriend got a ham sandwich and he said his was good, didn't go into full detail. What he did order for a drink was the affogato. It's basically an espresso shot you pour over gelato and you turn it into a nice mixture. The espresso is really strong combined with the gelato but paired up with a sandwich is divine. It compliments any sandwich or bread you decide to eat. Found this place via yelp. So glad i did! From the pics, I was thinking this was more of a sit down place, but it is seat yourself. No biggie. The girls at the counter were so friendly!! After gawking at the menu for a little too long, i finally settled at the roasted broccoli panini. OMG. SOOO GOOD. I wasn't expecting it to be so good. I can't even describe it. The broccoli has a slight lemon flavor that isn't over powering, just perfect. My mom got the salad, which she also loved! the guac that came with the salad was one of the best I've ever had. I stole some for my broccoli panini. The only thing i was less than impressed with was the chai latte. I had it made with almond milk (not dairy free, i just prefer the taste) but this tasted really watery. I also could not get over how good other customer's avocado smash toast looked. Get it and try it and let me know how it is, ok? Thanks. Please give this place a go! Oh and you get a free cookie with a 10$ purchase! I forgot to get this when we ordered and paid. Just stopped in after finding out about the place. I saw that they offered Vietnamese Iced Coffee so I had to try if the place was good or not. TL;DR: appealing modern cafe, the VIC is great, food is good. The cafe is aesthetically pleasing. Very minimal with modern touches. Right in back of the train station so it's pretty accessible. The Vietnamese iced coffee? So well made that I left with another one. Something that I didn't expect but made the regular Viet iced interesting was the addition of cinnamon; it gave it a nice spicy kick. While it isn't the drip style that I'm used to, the freshly grounded beans and pressed style gave it the strong favor. My friends got the matcha latte and tea. Pretty typical favors. I also got the breakfast quiche in the afternoon. While it was small, I found it pretty good. I had so little the sandwiches offered so I can't comment on how the good. Next time, I'll arrive earlier to try the breakfast menu. Wanting to try the avocado smash that everyone is raving about. read more

Had brunch here with some friends around 1:30pm on a Sunday! The space is very clean and the staff was super nice. They had some great options to decide from, but I went with the savory toast and an iced chai tea latte, which were both great and reasonably priced! The staff did mention that there was only one prepackaged bowl left and that they were out of a couple of items. Our group was about six people, and there were small round tables that accommodated us pretty well if we pulled up extra chairs. There is a longer table that's more suited for groups, but it was taken. The staff did mention that their technology has been acting up for a while, so paying with a card took a couple of minutes. I didn't mind. It did take a little while for my food to come out (~5-8 minutes after my friends, who had ordered after me). If you want to park, you have to get lucky and find some metered parking. Sydney's has a big city feel in a small city. It is refreshing to the early morning scene in Providence because it brings something new, exciting and different. . The atmosphere is fresh, clean, chic, light and simple. It has lots of windows, great lighting, fun art, rustic tables, succulents.. It has one of the best locations, being right next to the train station, but also central and easy to get to on the way to work. The best part? Its actually open before work (many cafes in the area are not... ). The menu has both the trendy (Avo toast, acai bowls) and classic items, but they are known for their avo toast. Speaking from experience, it was one of the most flavorful, big servings, beautifully decorated and plated avo tosats I've ever had. They also have fresh bakery items, breakfast sandwiches, salads.. It serves all purposes and is (mostly) healthy. Their drink option is also trendy (matcha) but delicious, fresh, and again, has that big city, urban feel that many places in Prov lack. Partly why I like it here so much is that its different, unique, and they portray food as a true art, science, talent and skill that exceeds expectations in all categories. read more

Only losing a star because it gets wicked busy and I don't want to wait for the deliciousness! We went last Sunday morning around 10am and the line to order was 15 minutes with a 45 min wait for food. Apparently the avocado toast didn't require the kitchen so it came out quickly and while I was disappointed I couldn't get an egg on top it still knocked my socks off. I never thought I'd be this basic but it really is the best avocado toast you can imagine. I am not a huge tomato fan but even those were amazing. Also the best matcha latte I've found it's one of the few that's not made from some sugary mix. My boyfriend was obsessed with his vietnamese ice coffee and peanut butter and jelly cronut. Prices aren't cheap but I'd rather pay a bit more for this type of quality. My only complaint is the crowd in here is the worst it's mostly NYC tourists who of course live on their own planet and want everyone and everything to function exactly like New York City (even though they're constantly trying to escape it).
