After a day of softball in Taunton, we wanted something to eat that was different than the normal pizza or bar food. We saw this place close by, less than 5 minutes from the field. TJ is the owner and greeted us right away. Made us feel comfortable and happy he could serve our group. Mom is the chef. We got our drinks right away. Our Octopus appetizer came out and was amazing. Grilled with olive oil and garlic. Meals took a little longer only because everything is made from scratch. We would be back if we are ever in the area! This is a go to for sure! read more

Don't know why this is rated so low. Food is very good and freshly cooked. Prices are very reasonable and plenty of food. I would have rated it a 5 but that's reserved for super restaurants. In the past it would have taken 45 to 60 minutes to get your food. Now it's 20-30 minutes. Service is excellent too. Well worth it read more

Food was very good portion wise, price and taste wise but anything fried seemed cold once we got it. Could have been the driver or how far in advance the restaurant makes it sitting. Soggy fries and 2 mins up road. I guess I'll maybe pick up next time and forget DoorDash. read more

First of all you should have the choice to choose if you want tap water or bottled water, no one wants to spend $1.50 on water when you could get it free from the tap Took us an hour and a half to get our food, and the fries were frozen and hard. I will never go here again let alone get takeout. Picked up takeout for dinner here late Saturday night... husband had just finished up a long day working overtime and he was famished... Ordered two entrees (nothing crazy: chicken Mozambique and a Portuguese steak (with virtually no sauce) and an appetizer (garlic shrimp )and if the prices on their online menu are indicative and if i round up to the nearest dollar and include tax, (cause you know, people can do math), they overcharged me over $50.00.. While the old owners had a more limited menu and even though the food took time, at least they were honest and appreciative of the patrons that ate at their establishment. So anyhow, if you want to support thieves, go ahead and order up, just double check your bill. read more

Come here for good food. It's a hole in the wall place. Definitely a mom n pop operations. Nothing fancy about The lady who waited on our table was also the cook. Service was very slow but the food is very much worth the wait. Fresh crusty roll were brought to the table with softened butter. The rolls were nice and fresh. We ordered a grilled steak and a grilled octopus. She never asked how we want the steak done but it came medium rare, which was perfect. The octopus were tender and juicy. The olive oil, garlic, hot sauce for the dipping is very addictive. We both have the garlic rice with our meal. Very very good, I can just eat the garlic rice forever. It's a Portuguese and Cape Verdean menu through and through. Absolutely wonderful. This place is a hidden gem and you should go out of your way to try the sweet lady 's cooking. read more

If this is good Portuguese food then I don't want it. I'm sorry but the woman I spoke to barely spoke any English and she was getting mad at me because I couldn't understand her. I was so patient but when you hang up on me because I can't understand you then that is plain rude. So when I called back to speak to someone else to tell them our takeout order was wrong I was argued with about the fact that the restaurant was closed and there was nothing they could do about it. Obviously if it is closed there isn't anything you can't do about it but how about say sorry and try to fix the problem and maybe give a credit for another day. The customer service just plain sucked and to wait for over an hour for takeout I only for it to have no taste and get the wrong order just isn't right. Chicken Mozambique was sitting in water... legit water. No flavor or spices which this dish is supposed to have. Hard broc and rice. Like they were in a hurry and wanted to get it out the door. All the meat was rubbery and fatty. Just poor quality and the pork in the cacoila was rubbery hard chunks not the pulled pork kind I grew up with. Portuguese food is supposed to be flavorful and fall apart. It's safe to say I will never come here again or recommend it. I absolutely LOVE this place! The atmosphere is relaxed, during the week they'll play music if you ask and on the weekends there's usually a live band. The food is freshly prepared, very well seasoned, reasonably priced and you get a huge portion. I always order a "surprise me" and let the chef puck for me and i have yet to be disappointed. Though there's off street parking it's limited space so if you're planning on coming with a large group I'd suggest taking the least amount of vehicles as possible. I moved to Taunton about 2 years ago. Never popped in here until last week. My wife is Portuguese and we have been looking for a decent Portuguese place in Taunton without any luck. We found TJ's. Advertised as American, Portuguese, and Cape Verdean, it is fantastic. We went on a Sunday night. They were out of Bacalhau which was disapointing, but I ended up getting the grilled lulas (squid) which was extremely flavorful. My wife had the Polvo (Octopus) and it was equally good. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. It is differnet than the crowded American joints we typically frequent. I loved my first experience at TJ's and I am looking forward to seconds...Hoping it is equally satifsying. read more

Wow service was nice but man they must've killed the cow to make our food we ordered at 545 and still at 630 haven't received our food mind you it isn't even close to being busy. I've had takeout from Tj's for a few years now, at first this place was great, but after awhile I don't know if they changed cooks or just didn't care. The frango w/ fries and rice is always good, but sometimes the frango (chicken) can be overcooked and dry, which takes away from the whole meal. Tj's is on a side street and you probably won't see it unless you are looking for it, which hurts them from gaining new customers, but it's worth a shot if you haven't had Portuguese food before and want to try some without breaking the bank. read more

So went to Tj's tonight for dinner with some family. My aunt ordered littlenecks in oil with garlic as an app. Although our waitress was very pleasant and smiley, her English was not great and communicating was pretty difficult. After about an hour of waiting (with no littlenecks in sight), we were seeing other patrons who came in after us receive their food. We eventually received our food which was pretty good but the 1 star is for what I witness from another waitress. Mh little cousin ordered a sandwich which was brought to another patron on accident. After witnessing this woman eat a couple of fries off of the plate and pick at the sandwich, she alerted her waitress who took the plate back to the kitchen. Through the windows looking into the kitchen, we witnessed this waitress take the same sandwich and put it in the pickup window to be served to my cousin. This is completely unacceptable and we made our feelings known that we would not accept the food (when confronted, the waitress claims that the other woman never touched the food which is completely false). Only go to this restaurant if you've eaten recently because you'll be waiting an hour+ for a steak. Also either know Portuguese or bring someone to translate so that you actually get the food that you asked for...we never did get those littlenecks :/ read more

I went with my boyfriend on a Friday night, there was a live band that just happened to sound great. I have no idea what they were saying but the music was wonderful (very loud) We ordered salads with grilled chicken. Slight language barrier between us and the waitress plus the music was so loud she could barely hear us talk. We got the salads but they didn't have any chicken on them (bummer). The salads were good and fresh, good prices on food. Decent priced drinks. I ordered a rum and coke and got a coconut rum and coke but it was still good. I am fairly easy to please if you treat me right. I can't wait to go back and order a plate of cooked food. It was more like a laid back party place on Friday than a restaurant, lots of dancing and fun. read more

They say, "When in Rome do as the Romans" right? Well, when in Taunton do as the Portuguese. TJ's is pretty much my first venture into Portuguese food and I had no complaints. I'd stopped in a few weeks prior and picked up a take-out menu which they gladly provided, unfortunately I didn't realize until after I got back to work that the majority of it was in Portuguese. I called in an order for myself and two coworkers and the man that answered the phone was very pleasant, we had a slight issue since his English wasn't the best and I know ZERO Portuguese but we muddled through. The restaurant is in a bit of a strange location, on a side street with pretty small signage. The building itself doesn't face the main street so you could easily pass it. I'm unsure if they normally don't do much of a lunch business or it was just slow being the right before 4th of July but it was extremely quiet inside. Quiet like the staff was the only people inside the restaurant. I got the chicken Mozambique for $10. White meat chicken in a spicy but not overpowering sauce with rice and fries. Both my co-workers had some type of pork dish which they both enjoyed and felt was reasonably priced given the large portions. All in all it was a good experience, I would certainly go back. However, before I do I might try to brush up on my Portuguese or find someone to translate the menu for me. Passing through town and found this place on yelp. Not big on decor but makes up for it in flavor. Helpful staff explained the menu items as most were in Portuguese with no English description. The waitress talked my wife into the grilled (instead of stewed) octopus and was she thrilled. It was so succulent and not tough or chewy that she ate it all. We will definitely stop in again next time we are in the area. read more
