I'll admit, I am huge bread snob! Rarely do I tolerate store-bought, processed bread--maybe the initial slice but then I can't eat anymore of it. I'll get nostalgic for a simple enriched white bread (especially with barbecue) once in awhile. I love, love homemade or locally baked artisan bread so Tabor Bread has been on my radar and I finally stopped in last Sunday. Tabor Bread is just after the light on Hawthorne and 50th before the hustle and bustle of the street. You walk in and order at the counter then take your number to a table if you are doing brunch. I came for coffee, pastries, and a loaf of bread for the week. I ordered the blueberry muffin, pumpkin doughnut muffin, an 8 oz. mocha, and the whole wheat batard to-go. You aren't given a number for to-go order so it was a little disorganized. I was given my pastries and the coffee took a little bit to make so I was trying to stand out of the way of people ordering and servers bringing out food, but I didn't want to sit down and take up a space...finally, my coffee was done. I had to get back in line for my loaf of bread because that wasn't given to me at the same time as the pastries. I was snacking on my blueberry muffin while waiting for my beverage, however, I didn't realize it until I had reached my car and halfway through with the pastry that it was not blueberry but a spiced pear muffin. Four stars because the mislabeling of goods. It was tasty until I figured it wasn't what I was expecting. My almost two years old niece ate the pumpkin doughnut muffin and she seems to have liked it. Had a slice of the batard today and it was perfection--crusty on the outside but soft and spongy on the inside. I didn't expect it to be so moist and it stayed so after grilling/toasting, did not fall apart. There's nothing like the smell and taste of fresh bread! I'm definitely going to be back for more of the batard and to try their other creations. Your bread exceeded my standards! read more

Cute place with a large, brick oven and lots of natural light from its big windows. First impressions were good, but the bread was even better. I had some Mountain Bread, I think with olives and cheese baked into it - honestly I don't remember what any of ingredients were. But I know that it was absolutely and incredibly delicious. We've been eyeballing this place since it's renovation wondering what was going on inside. Today we stopped in (after trying unsuccessfully earlier in the week, they are closed Mon & Tues) and we couldn't have been more pleased. The actual building is a lovely Tudor (right?) style home that has been reworked inside and out with great care, adding a wood burning oven that was to be stoked by a pile of firewood we saw an employee loading up. As you enter the place, the room seemed a bit large for the small variety of products behind the single counter, but we quickly realized the bulk of the space is for diners to use, and the wood fired oven itself is visible right there in front of you as entertainment while you snack on the breads, soups and sandwiches. This place reminded me of a more neighborhood-y Saint Honoré for the Hawthorne set. The samples are nice, cubes of their breads available for you to try before you buy, and the variety is actually more than sufficient to make a choice and still come back regularly to try something new, but above all else, EVERYTHING was stunningly delicious. Top this off with staff that know their product inside and out, are exceedingly friendly and appropriately proud of what they've built, and you have a terrific addition to the Portland landscape that we hope will remain for years and years. This place is the real deal, but you better come early. I first stopped by about 4:30 pm on Thursday after flying into PDX, but they were already sold out, even though they were scheduled to be open until 7:30 pm that day. So I returned on Saturday morning and was able to score three loaves: River Bread (wheat), spelt, and einkorn. I gave the wheat loaf to my sister, but I ate the majority of the other two over the next few days and they were excellent. Both spelt and einkorn are more primitive relatives of modern wheat and make a very different loaf from typical sourdough. (As a bonus, I was able to use the 1910 Hawthorne bridge on my way there across the Willamette River.) I really wish I could find an artisan baker like this in Arizona, but no luck so far. read more

Their spelt bread is glorious simply toasted with butter. In fact, I've loved the hearty flavorful profile of all of their loaves I've tried. The space is gorgeous and welcoming without being stuffy. I love that all of the breads are made with a sourdough starter. To me, that means more nutritious bread. If soup is on for dinner, go get your bread here. read more

One of the best bakeries in Portland. They have locally sourced wheat and all of their breads are sourdough. If youre looking for a strong sourdough taste, they have some of the best that I have found. They also have delicious flavors such as rosemary olive, and fig walnut, and rotating daily specials. They will cut your loaf for you if you ask (except for the fig walnut). They also serve some beer, and have a pretty good menu. The service is always friendly. read more

Nice and clean restaurant (breathing room in dining area, lots of Windows that allow sun in, although a bit on the noisy side [overhead radio]). My bestie ordered soup (tomato orange thyme) and bread, and we both had a matcha latte (they didn't have almond milk as an option, but hazelnut was available -YUMMM!! ). The tomato soup was also very good. The only downside was that we couldn't make it in early, but we called ahead and was told that our choices of loaves of bread (cinnamon swirl and white wheat) would be put aside to hold - they weren't. Best bread I've ever had. Period. Insert whatever superlative you can come up with, they all work. This bread makes a new category above bread- I don't know what to call it- Can you call bread a superfood? We do not eat any other bread from anywhere- nothing else comes close. Try it, and if you don't like it, well, there is no hope for you. Btw- the new menu is fine. Yes, there are fewer choices, but streamlining the menu will simplify the business, and allow them to keep making bread, employing people, and yes, hopefully turn a profit every year. I must be missing something about this place. We eat fresh bread at home at least once a week and every time my husband brings bread home from Tabor Bread, it is burned. I like a nice browned bread, but when the bottom is black my kids can't even eat it as it is so tough. read more

During our trip to Portland from SF, we naturally had to hit up as many bakeries as we could. We were quite underwhelmed with the croissant game in Portland after having tried Ken's (not worth it), Grand Central (very eh), and Twisted Croissant (very good with unique flavors but not the best we've tried), which don't even rival Arsicault, Tartine or B Patisserie in SF. We were so happy to find Tabour, which has unique sourdough-based croissants and heirloom loaves. We tried the chocolate sourdough croissant, spinach Parmesan roll, baklava croissant, goat cheese and Brussels sprout danish, butter sourdough croissant, and morning bun, and none of them disappoint! The mild tang of their sourdough nicely balances their sweeter pastries, and provides an additional savory note in their Parmesan rolls and danishes. Their croissants are flaky with crunchy edges and a lovely chewy interior. It was so good that we returned for more croissants and their sourdough starter right before we left to drive back home to SF! read more

I'm a BIG fan of businesses/restaurants that challenge the system to deliver or produce wonderful products. In other words, businesses that innovate. That's what I like about Tabor. If you're into whole grains and the idea that making one's own flour using one's own ingredients such as ancient grains, visit Tabor Bread. Now, any bakery can buy flour and bake bread. Right? Most of the time, it make sense to buy the flour rather than make it the flour yourself. (Have you read the book, Bake the Bread, Buy the Butter? You should.) So, I'm not saying that it's good to make your own flour for shits and giggles or produce the same old bread. BUT, making your own flour and baking bread using an ancient fireplace style oven produces a superior product, then yes. By all means, make your own flour! And that's what Tabor delivers: truly unique, tasty, healthy scones, breads, and biscuits, made from in-house flour and baked using a fireplace style oven, which produced results I loved and enjoyed on my *SIGH* one and only visit. I wish we had such a place in Seattle. Unfortunately, I'll have to trek back to Portland to try another biscuit breakfast sandwich. read more

Tabor Bread is amazing! Whole grains that a milled on site...they have a wonderful selection of pastries as well. It doesn't bother me that they have scaled down their menu for items such as sandwiches and breakfast options. I get it..it takes alot of perishable items and staff. Totally don't understand people's enthusiasm for this place. Takes itself too seriously when the product is not all that. First off, the staff are a bit haughty. This is a common Portland trait. On two occasions I've visited, I witnessed the counter person sort of disdainfully refuse requests by customers (i.e. "no we can't slice your loaf for your, we recommend not pre-slicing our breads"). When given a bread sample I said one ingredient's flavor was too strong for me, the counterperson disagreed with me "I think it's perfect" - um okay. There is a fake but mostly inoffensive "rustic" charm to the interior. They did a major reno on the building before opening that seems pretty extravagant. The atmosphere is pleasant but not particularly comfortable or inviting, however the outdoor seating is nice on a sunny day. As for the product itself, I've gotten a few loaves from here and also tried some of the desserts. All of them have been brick like in density and dry. The chocolate bread (made of teff I think) acted like metamucil on me. read more

I didn't actually buy anything here because everything was too healthy looking. They staff was friendly but it was all flax, wheat germ and the like. No simple pastries or even just simple buttered breads, which is what I was hoping for. I believe they had wine on their menu, but I could be mistaken. Come on, Tabor Bread! Tabor bread is pretty solid. The service dept is pretty weak -- if you're not just getting counter service it's pretty slow, they seem to have high turnover in staff. The pastries and biscuits seem to be an afterthought, the bread is excellent, sandwiches are great as well. read more

Found a HUGE slug in my side salad!!! They said "well it is fresh organic greens." Extremely unprofessional, the reality is someone in your kitchen didn't wash those greens properly. Very disgusted and disappointed, would not recommend to anyone. read more

Very delicious buckwheat chocolate chip cookies! We came back on our last day in Portland for breakfast and enjoyed a breakfast sandwich with ham, egg, and gruyere. Their coffee was good too. Amazing bread choices. I like the breakfast plate with cheese. Drinks are good as well. It is a cool space with the oven visible from the main space. They have a few toys available and are pretty family friendly on weekends. Weekdays, I have gone there for meetings or to focus and work. This lovely little neighborhood bakery deserves one loud, resounding "Holy Wow!" The bread is hearty, delicious, and made with quality ingredients. There are plenty of gluten-y options-- loaves of dark rye, white wheat, red wheat, spelt, etc; sandwiches, bread pudding, and more. The frittata sandwich, complete with goat cheese and kalamatas, is an incredible take on an egg-sandwich. Super decadent and filling! The tomato-jam sandwich is sure to blow your mind. It's some of the best tomato jam I've tasted (and I am a self-proclaimed tomato jam connoisseur) and the dark rye is its perfect compliment. Try the house-made pickled veggies- perfect texture and flavor! While the soups are rotating, the vegan carrot-fennel soup was light yet full of flavor. The atmosphere is quaint and comfortable, with little touches that shows this place cares about the details. Serving Spella coffee, and with a beer and wine menu, this sweet little restaurant will definitely be a place I frequent. read more

We ordered the white wheat bread and it was mediocre. Though it wasn't doughy, it should have been cooked a bit longer. The texture was gummy. The owner was at the register when we walked in, and she didn't acknowledge us for several minutes .
