Came here for dinner tonight and it did not dissapoint. Unlike other restaurants there aren't any tables and instead it's set up like a bar area. You pick the broth, type of rice, noodles, & a plate of vegetables or you can also pick your own. I opted for the spicy miso mixed with tonkotsu pork soup which was recommended to us by our server. I paired it with the white rice, upon, and their veggie plate which includes carrots, Spinach, cabbage, broccoli. For my choice if meat, I ended up going with the grass fed ribeye since it was less fat and leaner. The soup base was delicious and it didn't cause me to bloat which is a good sign and indicate that it wasn't too salty! They gave us two sauces and also offered to season our meat with green scallions and garlic over it. I liked ponzu sauce better than the other sauce because it was a bit peanut buttery for me. You also don't control your own heat and they'll do it for you. In the end they also offer to pour all the soup into a bowl for you. I learned later on that they give you the option to turn ur leftovers into porridge which is pretty cool. Overall the food was delicious and the service was really good. read more

I am a huge shabu shabu lover and it's my go-to meal! This also unfortunately means that I have high standards. I've been to this location several times as I live close and I will say the meat quality is great and I love the veggies as well. However, the broth to me is subpar and service has declined over time in my experience. I have to raise my hand almost every time I needed something. I also asked for extra veggies the last time I came and was surprised to receive a extra charge for it, even though additional veggies and rice have never been extra in the past. Overall a great shabu place but I will admit there are better options in the area. Tips are to Yelp check in for a free mochi plate and come on Tuesdays for BOGO sake or beer! read more

My favorite Shabu spot EVER. I've been to so many shabu spots in Orange County (and beyond) but Tabu Shabu has to be my favorite spot. Been coming here for over 5 years now and will keep on coming! What I love: The food is amazing. I love that their Sukiyaki broth is more concentrated than some other shabu spots so it flavors the meat well. You have to get the egg on the side to dip your meat in. I always get their Zabuton Wagyu short rib. It's so bomb! Their crunchy chilli garlic edamame is also very very good! The servers are great! They usually remember us which is nice. One of the OG girls there always remember us and even suggested this onion & Serrano pepper off the menu dish and made our experience even better. The downside of this place: The only downside is that 1 out of 4 times the Zabuton Wagyu Short Rib meat is inconsistent. Sometimes it's more rough/tough which I hate. The seating and how the pots are spaced is too close. Sometimes you get a decent spot where it's not too close but some spots are way too close. Both me and my friend kept bumping the customer next to us (and vice versa) and you can tell that the customer next to us was uncomfortable as well and that there wasn't enough space to put all of her meats and plates. I would suggest that servers skip a seating spot for some of the areas that are too tight. read more

We had a great experience at Tabu. I've been searching for a place that serves good sukiyaki and I found it here at Tabu. The broth is sweet and rich. The vegetables are fresh. The server also gave us their house made sauce which made the meal 5x better! Their customer service is some of the best that I experienced. They were attentive without hounding us over and over about how we were doing. They also gave us 20% off our mains since it was happy hour so we saved several dollars on top of everything else. Stopped by for a late dinner after seeing that they were open late! I'm a huge fan of shabu shabu and had high expectations after reading all the raving reviews. Ordered the sukiyaki broth with angus beef torro belly and all the veggie fixins! Everything was great besides what I would say is most crucial part of shabu shabu, the broth. It was soooo salty, almost to the point of it no longer being enjoyable. Drank a lot of water and ate a lot of rice to combat it. I would've asked for more broth, but I didn't notice them offer this to any parties or bring out a kettle. Other than that, they were generous with the veggies, the cuts of meat were good, and the service was attentive. It's a small place and is structured in a U-shaped bar. In town visiting and the family was craving Shabu Shabu. This counter style Shabu reminded me of our Shabu experience in Tokyo. So glad we found this spot. I work close by and came here for an early dinner on a Monday evening and I'm so happy we beat the dinner rush. Yelp waitlist is for sure the way to go. Seating is just one continuous bar area, roughly 20-25 seats with individual shabu pots. For starters we got their garlic edamame, my favorite. Then just follow the steps on the menu. Order your broth (pork tonkotsu), order your grains (rice), order your veggie plate & choose between udon, shiratake, or kale ramen noodles. Free refills on the broth & grains! For protein, we tried their regular (1/4 lb) Reserve Angus Rib Eye. The sauces were good. Service was excellent! Will most likely come back. read more

Don't let the strip mall location fool you. This place is legit! Visiting our kids in SoCal and they take us here. What a pleasant surprise. Japanese Hot Pot cooking with top notch meats, noodles, vegetables, sides of rice and exquisite dipping sauces. Washed down with cold Sake and Sapporo beer. Pretty solid option for Shabu on this side of OC! The service was super helpful! They answered all our questions and were very attentive. I got the the pork broth and asked for the flavor bomb. I would recommend asking for 2. 1 for the broth and 1 to actually dip the meats in. You sit in a row rather than facing each other so keep this in mind in case you are coming with a larger party. Parking is in a large lot so it was easy to find. the wait is short even for a Saturday evening. read more

Was craving shabu after working out nearby and tabu definitely didn't disappoint! I got the sukiyaki broth but they have different broth options. I came in here on a Sunday afternoon right before they closed until dinner service. The waitress was really kind and took me in. I got the two types of meat: chuck eye and ribeye. The side of veggies and the noodles were plenty and the kale noodles were delicious. You can substitute your veggies which I think it's nice but I liked everything it came with. I got a spicy miso broth and it was okay, not much flavor, but paired well with my meat and vegetables. I added some miso paste to it when I got home. I had extra veggies and noodles as well in which the waitress helped me pack to go. The restaurant was very spacious and clean inside and I like the way the seats are set up. The meal definitely cured my hot pot cravings. I'd definitely love to return and try the other meats and broths. Really small place for shabu shabu, the service was on point for mother's day but gave me a very american style vibe for shabu... Prime Angus Ribeye was the choice of meat. The cuts were thin and portions were huge. I got the kombu seaweed flavor, and moms got the kotsu flavor. The veggies and meat were fresh and simple. My sister finished off most of our meals because we don't really eat big individual meals like that. Not bad, and for gluten free people. It's worth the meal. read more

Yes! So many GF options. I'm allergic to gluten and go here pretty much monthly (sometimes weekly or more 🤷🏻‍♀️). Everything GF is noted on the menu. Pretty much avoid certain broths and noodles and you're good!

You can ask for it to be marinated which means they add some garlic sauce to it, topped with green onion and sesame seeds. I got the Flat Iron Mokkoji Cut beef. My wife got the prime rib. Honestly mine was good enough that my wife could get mine to save a little money next time.

We arrived here in Costa Mesa, was greeted promptly and sat down on the only 3 low bar seats in the entire restaurant (best seats in the house) All the staff were super friendly, very polite and quick. I only got one of their names; Jose was on point walking us through the menu and it turns out we can customize the veggie plate and the Mega Man portion of meat- I ended up getting half Certified Angus Beef Ribeye and Prime ribeye. The meat was amazingly sliced and consistent with the size and marbling. They even gave an extra few ounces I noticed (whoever was the meat cutter, you did a fantastic job) and the veggie plates were beautiful and fresh although that is standard in Shabu. Being picky with my shabu I was skeptical of this place (I know, I should be more open minded--hell, and I should be less racist but we know we're all a little inside). When we arrived there was a wait, but the staff was very friendly and offered us drinks. After a few hits of sake and beer, we were seated in no time. With choices like shabu, sukiyaki, and barbeque, I was a bit torn on what to try. Our waiter recommended we try a half and half of shabu and sukiyaki. This small spot is located in a slice of Costa Mesa that should be renamed Tiny Tokyo. It is O.C.'s…read moreversion of Sawtelle Blvd in WLA. Wabi Sabi is in a strip mall with mostly J-eats from Tofu to Tonkatsu. The decor is spartan and all Sushi. And don't ask for a pitcher of Soy Sauce or a knob of fakey Wasabi along with committing a long laundry list of Sushi sins. ie; pointing the hardwood (no cheesy plastic chopsticks) or stabbing a lobe of Uni with them. The Chopsticks are solely a vehicle for delivering each bite to your lips and then your hips. There are only 15 seats in the place. Most of them at the horseshoe Sushi Bar. There are two four tops plus one two top. That's it. My Dorm Room was bigger. But cozy is good for such a place as it creates conviviality. Shushi Chef Makoto-san holds court and Kampachi. He serves a curated variety of Ikajime, (aged Fish), fresh fish flown in from sources in Japan, and some local fish when it meets his requirements along with 45 different Sake choices. Just ask Akira-san, the Sake Somm, for suggestions. Despite it's size, Wabi Sabi offers an auspicious and ambitious menu. Sushi etiquette dictates that you eat exactly as it arrives. No bottle of Soy Sauce or a knob of fakey Wasabi (Horseradish with food coloring). There are three levels of Omakase from $85 per person to $180 per person. For my first time I opted for the Sushi 101 version ($85) and planned to supplement that with ala carte plates until I could enjoy no more. The Omakase featured six Nigiri, (Vinegared Rice and fish), one small mystery Bowl and a Hand Roll all up to Chef Makoto. I lost count and I think Chef Makoto did to as we were having a grand ole time. First you will be asked questions. "Anything you don't eat? Anything you must eat? Any allergies?" "No Chef", I replied. "I eat everything alive or dead. Cat Hair, Puppy Pimples, Dust Bunnies, Bee's Knees, and Roasted House Mouse. You decide. (Probably a good thing that didn't translate well). That issue having been resolved the party started. Akira-san brought a flight of thee Sakes. All lovely and unique. The first dish was a lightly Vinegared Half Avocado with shredded Hanakatsuo (Bonito Flakes). The cuts in the sliced Avocado were so precise Sweeney Todd would have approved the presentation. Plus it was bright, delicious, simple and elegant. Next came Crispy Unagi (Fresh Water Eel) intertwined with Baby Corn inside a crunchy wrapper to hot to touch. Talk Politics while it cools. Add some Pickled Ginger that packs a pickled punch to the plate and move on to something less derisive...Religion. House Made Corn Tofu was really interesting and terrific. It was as thick as a Lemon Curd settled into a shallow pool of Sweetened Dashi topped with Hokkaido Uni and a dot of real Wasabi. Machigainaku ichiban. Out came a bisected bivalve (Dry Day Boat Scallop) also from Hokkaido served with Seasonal Rice. The Scallop was firm but not chewy and as good as this dish can be. Buri (Yellowtail) with House Made Corn Sauce, Daikon Radish with a dot of Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe). Hard enough to harvest such a delicacy when they're flying let alone when they are swimming. It's Tuna time. Otoro, fully fatty style with a paint brush of Soy Sauce lightly applied and as soft as Butter. Then there was Medium Fatty Toro. Both were wonderful. Having worked my way through the fatty scale it was a fatty on the scale in the morning. How about some Salmon on Rice with a dot of Basil Paste. Doesn't that sound divine? Well, it was. Buri (Amberjack) with a drop of Green Peppercorn Sauce was spiritual as well. I began to think about tapping out and then I asked for chopped Buri, a dash of Chili Powder and Chopped Shiso Leaves, a brush of Soy Sauce all neatly loaded into a Nori Square Hand Roll. Finally, I encouraged Chef Makoto to go to the edge and make a last Roll of his choice. It was just Chopped Toro and Pickles. Ooh Baby, was that perfect. A true perfect Happy Ending. Sushi Wabi Sabi you're my new hobby.

One thing got me excited to try this place and that was that their beef teriyaki is a sliced steak…read more Most places do chopped beef or thin beef shavings, but it's best when you take a nice delicious steak and you grill it medium medium rare and you slice it and chisel some teriyaki sauce on it. However, they marinade their steak in baking soda. Sometimes baking soda is used to tenderize meat, but it is not necessary when you are doing a steak like this. And the baking soda flavor is very strong and ruins the flavor of the steak because I can't taste the steak anymore and then they put a lot and a lot of sesame seeds on it so the second overpowering flavor is sesame seeds. It is overkill and in this case less is more, they should grill the steak without any baking soda just lightly salted and then let the teriyaki sauce flavor it. They cooked it well done too, they have to cook it medium so the steak is a little more delicate.. if they make these minor changes, I would increase my rating. Flavor wise I would give it a zero because it didn't work, but because of the ingredients and the food itself wasn't bad. I'm leaving it at three. The shrimp tempura was OK. It wasn't like most other places, but it actually tasted pretty good and the tempura sauce was great. The curry bowl tasted like Vermont curry and I didn't like it. It was also lacking chunks of potato and carrots . if you're gonna use a packaged curry, I prefer S&B extra hot black box. It's really not that spicy, but it has a good flavor.. Otherwise, all the ingredients seemed fresh. The packaging was nice and the customer service was good.

Of course!) and make sure we are served by him, that they know our sake preferences from our last visit even if it's been a year since we've dined here, that they'll make notes on seasonal ingredients you want to try and make sure to contact you when those ingredients are available... all of these small things really matter and make us as customers feel so appreciated. I personally prefer a salmon skin hand roll to actually be mostly crispy skin. On top of that, it was extremely salty. My husband started with the soft shell crab roll, and honestly, it was terrible and completely inedible. We actually had to send it back, and my husband NEVER sends food back. The soft shell crab was cold and tasted like it had been cooked much earlier, possibly even the day before. It had that unpleasant taste of old or overused frying oil and was just awful. There was also way too much imitation "crab" meat in the roll compared to the actual soft shell crab, which, after tasting the soft shell crab, may have been for the best. He also ordered the special sushi platter. That was OK, and the fish did seem fresh, but we found the cuts of fish to be rather small and thin. Overall, this was such a disappointing experience, especially because we've been here several times before. We came back because we had enjoyed it in the past.

The serving size were four large rolls that were more than we could even finish. It was accompanied by a flavorful peanut sauce. The peanut sauce didn't have that cheap skippy peanut butter taste but was not overpowering and just enhanced every bite. My wife had the Chicken Curry with rice. It was a large serving that she couldn't finish on her own and I joined in to assist with my own spoon. It was filled with pulled chicken that was tender and tasty. The curry was more of a broth that had the perfect amount of curry flavor. Not too spicy and the soft white big potato halves made the dish feel like a warm, hearty bowl of comfort food. The rice was some of the tastiest I've ever had. Not sure what it's seasoned with but it's yellow and stick and delicious and balanced the curry broth perfectly. I ordered the marinated chicken with rice. It's served with a wonderful fish light fish sauce that you often get with vermicelli dishes at Vietnamese restaurants. The chicken was a thigh meat that was tender and flavorful. The rest rice was the perfect accompaniment that filled me up in a good way. Highly recommend both dishes. They use no seed oils, everything is fresh, made to order and be patient as the food doesn't come out right away. Good, healthy, fresh food takes time and worth the wait. They have a bunch of boba and coffee drink options that many around us had ordered and seem to really be enjoying. This place will go on our list of must return and perfect for those summer evening date night spots in one of the best beach cities in all of California.

The service was attentive and friendly. I got the chicken vermicelli. It was delicious. Made fresh with a flavorful side of fish sauce. The shrimp spring rolls were also freshly prepared with crisp lettuce and plump shrimp. These were lettuce heavy rather than vermicelli heavy which made them nice and light. A few tables inside with a few tables in front of the restaurant.
