Service and interior were really great but the food itself was extremely disappointing. My partner and I tried the ribeye + beef brisket with kombu base & sukiyaki. The first thing that I was surprised by was that any base broth that wasn't effectively just water coated extra. The seaweed water base was pretty much flavorless and would only recommend for people looking for something more bland. The sukiyaki was also not amazing because it was more salty than sweet. Felt like too much soy sauce was added for my taste The briskets were pretty low grade for the price (imo). They were super tough to chew and the ribeye was only marginally better. The veggie platter that came with the order was pretty standard and nothing bad nor special about it. Seating arrangement is a bit awkward for larger groups. My group was 5 people and since it's all bar seating it was difficult to converse with everyone so I wouldn't recommend this spot for bigger groups Staff here were awesome. We decided to have a late dinner and felt like having some Shabu. We've seen this place for awhile and decided to give it a try. The restaurant is bar seating. Staff and service were good and attentive. The food was good and you get your choices of broth, kombu, sukiyaki, tonkatsu, or miso and which noodle type you want; udon, shiraki, or ramen. We tried the last three broths and udon and ramen. We enjoyed all of them. You can also make the broth spicy We tried the prime enoki wrap which was really good. Although the food was good, we found the seating a bit cramped and broth location a bit far from reach. I think this wouldn't be an issue if the chairs were a bit higher, or counter a bit lower. This was my first hot pot experience in the 805/Ventura County. The service was pretty solid and the entire staff was very attentive, especially our waitress Natalie. Where this review goes down a couple notches is the seating. I was rubbing elbows with stranger next to me because it's a large U shaped seating. This is a horrible layout and really impacts your experience. Additionally the way the hot pot is set up it's really far from where you are sitting causing you to stretch over to reach the pot. Lastly because of the dipping sauces, veggie platter and all the additional bowls/plates you are playing Tetris to make sure you are not getting your food in the personal space of the people next to you. I would not recommend this place for date nights because you can't really have a conversation without being distracted by those around you. Went here for dinner during our girl's night out. We got there around 5:30 and it wasn't too busy. All the businesses in the plaza which its located in were closed so parking was not an issue at all. The restaurant is pretty big & they have plenty of seats. We were greeted and seated right away. Service was good & they kept checking up on us in case we needed anything else. My friends ordered half spicy miso & half tonkatsu with a large Angus Ribeye. I got tonkatsu with large Angus Ribeye as well. We all asked to sub some of our veggies (pumpkin & carrots for mushroom and bok choy) yet we only got 2 bok choys and a really small portion of mushrooms. I guess they don't sub veggies at this location. The one in Huntington Beach does give you a larger portion of the ones you request if you're subbing. I also asked if they marinate the meat and they don't. I did it for my friends though. Just had to ask for more garlic and onions. They did give us the ponzu/soy sauce/chili oil. Both of my friends thought their broths were too spicy. They actually do eat spicy, so I'm not sure how spicy it was for them to say that. They asked if they could get more tonkatsu broth to dilute it. Other than that they did like the broth & meat. The tonkatsu broth was flavorful, I thought it was pretty close to the one in HB. One of my friends also ordered the cucumber salad, it was good & the portion was bigger than what we expected. By the time we were done the restaurant was a bit busier. We love this place! It's not near home unfortunately so when we are in the area or have a special date night we come here. Definitely join the waitlist on Yelp. Every time we have been the place fills up shortly after opening. I really love the layout at atmosphere of the restaurant. It almost feels like one big family. The service is always incredible. This team works so well together that someone is always helping the other out and the turnaround is amazing. As for the food- A+! There is something for everyone. And it's so customizable that you only get what you want with no food waste. I love their policy to bag up what you have left with more broth. It's practically a second dinner! I am happy to see Tabu Shabu here in the valley. I first tried Tabu Shabu at its Costa Mesa location many years ago. Now that I live part time in LA/Valley area. I'm stoke to see they are here. Their menu got better over the year with better qualify of meat than I could remember. Honestly when you are up here in the Valley. You don't have much option. The OC has so many good Shabu restaurants and Tabu Shabu isn't on my top three. I am happy they are here in the Valley and looking forward to the new location in Tarzana. The service is fantastic. The place is mostly busy on Friday and Satursday. Barstools are uncomfortable and narrow seat for sure. I normally get in and out fast. At a loss for words- Honestly, Tabu Shabu in Thousand Oaks just doesn't miss. First off, the vibe is great. It's clean and modern but still feels relaxed- not stuffy at all. Perfect spot to grab dinner with friends or even a low-key date night. The food is where it really shines though !! The broths are super flavorful without being too heavy & the meat quality is legit. The thin sliced beef cooks in seconds && basically melts in your mouth. I went a little overboard at the sauce bar (no regrets) & mixed up my own combo that was probably 60% ponzu and 40% chaos... but somehow it worked ‍ Everything tasted fresh. 100% this place is amazing in every way! The amount of food you get is massive. I love that you get so many fresh veggies. We opted for the handmade ramen noodles and it was SOO worth the extra money! The employees were really helpful and gave us complimentary jasmine tea and a broth booster sauce that gave lots of flavor. We had so much fun eating here and you leave super full! Very disappointed in their rule about reservation that they don't follow. I put my name on the waiting list and got here and no one is waiting in line however, they won't seat us even when seats are available. The workers here said someone makes a reservation already so we will need to wait for at least 30-40 mins or more. The fact is this place is usually doesn't take a reservation but you only can put your name on the waiting list( I have been here many times and I know the rule) the workers also admit that yes, they don't take reservations but they did for this party. How is this fair? Btw food here is good. Service in the past has been amazing but some of this new kids working here are different. Adding more info: after they make us wait for 30-40 mins. Went here last month for a Thursday night dinner, there wasn't a wait and we sat by the bar. Last time we were here was after pandemic and restaurants just opened up. We live in the valley and wanted to try a shabu shabu place this side of town. We always go to the koreatown one but we gave this one a try. We went back because we were in the area, we knew what to expect as we have been here before so it's a bit pricey but it's because of the premium meat and veggies. It is not an AYCE set up so you just basically order the protein you want. I ordered 2 regular proteins, hubs got the xl and my son got an xl as well of the ribeye. I spent the same amount as I paid for 5 in the other place in ktown. They're 2 different experiences. Definitely try the sauces they're sooo good. Service is quick and I like the bar setup except I feel like I have dinosaur arms and can't really reach the other side . Other than that if you're in this side of town it's worth the try. read more

Tabu Shabu was an incredible experience from start to finish. The quality of the ingredients really stands out especially the meats, which were perfectly sliced and incredibly fresh. They carry Snake River which we LOVE! The broth was flavorful and the vegetable platter was generous with a great variety. Everything tasted clean, fresh, and high quality. We met the owner while dining there. We were new to hot pot and Alex the owner walked us through the entire experience! It felt like a private dining experience! Super nice guy! When he did bring the items he joked that "the tools were always there" and he "never forgot to bring the rice/water etc." after we asked for the check and to-go containers he said "what's the magic word?" Insinuating a please. It felt like the equivalent tone of a man telling a woman she should smile more. The food itself was lacking in flavor, not to mention it was not easy to cook considering we didn't have tools or proper bowls/plates (had to ask for those too!). When we tried to get attention of person that told us we were next to ask, we were ignored. :/ I get they're busy but they could at least explain what was going on and we prob would've understood--it's the fact they didn't care (after we waited so long) that was a turn off. When finally seated, we had to ASK for lemon for our waters (when other people had lemon in theirs), had to ASK for utensils/tongs, had to ASK for sauces, literally had to flag down to ask for the most basic things, totally unacceptable!! Pot controls neglected as mine was first undercooked and after the adjustment I asked for, it was left on boiling till the end and soup burnt to a crisp. They were clearly rushing to close so we were prob extra neglected. Veggies DIRTY (see pics), they explained the veggies "had sunburn" lol) but no it was DIRT and stuff that can be wiped off! Now some people say that the broth is the most important. Others will argue. It's the cut of meat, and even some will say it's the variety of veggies (the vegetarians). I feel like the broth is 50%, the meat is 25%, and the veggies are 25%. That's why Tabu Shabu is so good. There are four choices of broth, and a great selection of meats. The platter of veggies is a great selection and a pretty good amount. I also had the truffle edamame. The truffle flavor and smell was on the strong side, so if you're like me, and you enjoy truffle, it will be very satisfying. They also have a really great selection of drinks, beer. And the service is really good. I'm also glad that it was the only business open, so there was plenty of parking. It doesn't have to be below 70° to enjoy Tabu Shabu. But it definitely helps create a hot pot atmosphere that adds to the enjoyment level. read more
