Porch sushi! We've been cooped up for over 6 weeks and are grateful for Tachikawa's COVID friendly take-out! Got some of our favs--and just as delicious at home as in the restaurant. While we miss our social time with chefs Chris and Douglas, and the rest of the staff, so grateful for the fresh food that I simply can't make at home! Tonight's feast included our name-sake Warren Cami roll, my fav--the Tiffany roll, an Avocado roll, goyza, and veggie soba noodle soup. The service here was not friendly and not up To par. I ordered a sushi roll while dinning in and brought it upon the server that there was a hair in the food. They went back and forth between me and the cook and herself. I felt disgusted and asked if i can get a new roll and take the one i had off my tab. Numerous times i had to speak up and not offered a new dish or anything that would be courteous to the customers while eating you know, no one wants to eat a hair off of a plate in any dinning setting because its cross contamination and unsanitary conditions. I love coming to this place! Considering we've got limited Japanese options here in West Contra Costa County, this is a good option for a quick bite or even happy hour. The restaurant is a bit small and can get a somewhat crowded. Today we had a short wait and was totally packed. Luckily the staff are efficient by clearing tables once guests leave and then right away they seat the next group of people on the waiting list. Our order was taken almost as soon as we sat down, which was perfect because I'm starving! Order was taken, drinks and miso soup was brought right out...talk about excellent service! The girls running the front are super efficient and I noticed they have quite a few repeat customers - because the employees were greeting customers that they seem to know! Such an awesome, local neighborhood restaurant. And most importantly, they've been around for many, many years! Ambiance is nice. Prices are moderate. Presentation is great sometimes and other times just okay. Overall it's a solid 3.5 stars. This place was my favorite, this past week was really craving sushi we went for dinner and it was empty, it took the hostess a few minutes to realize we were there then told us to sit anywhere. Ordered the Oh Yes which is a deep fried roll, and the salmon was way over cooked it tasted like it was cooked earlier and recooked to order. Also ordered the Volcano and the shrimp was cold/not freshly made and had an odd taste again like it was precooked and just assembled to order, the avocado was turning black, definitely not a fresh cut. Will not be going back anymore as the service and food quality have gone down. read more

If I could leave a negative star. I would. I've been coming here for years and NEVER been treated so horrible. I expressed that the fish was not good. It was an ice-cream scoop of rice. About four bites of rice. Some lettuce with some dressing (I did not like) and some pieces of chicken. About a half a portion for a grown man. Literally. I was still very hungry when I finished this 25 bucks worth of food that wasn't remotely worth 25 bucks. Never again. For 25 bucks per person, I WANT TO BE FULL when I'm done, not looking for more to eat. This is not acceptable. And it appears a few other reviewers had the same issue. Horrible, ordered a soba dish which we never had asked the waitress what it is and she says it's a stir fry with soba Noddles. Had chicken. Well the dish came to my table. It tasted weird so I asked is this made with butter?. She says yes thats what the sauce is butter stir fry. The amount of butter used was so much that I couldn't eat it. When I asked to have it redone without the butter the waitress said they couldn't. When asked to remove it from my bill. While the happy hour menu is fairly small, all the rolls on that menu are solid choices and pretty unbeatable for the price. The Oh Yes Roll is one of my favorites! While I mostly just order rolls here, I've also bought their lunch/dinner sets to bring to work before and found them to be good options too. Services was great but came for the food. Had a bowl of disappointing Nabeyaki Udon. Soup did not have much flavor. Few pieces of chicken, few pieces of shredded carrot and one poached egg. That's it. Is this normal? Or traditionally how its supposed to be? Cuz most places I've been to have lots of veggies, imitation crab meat, and a shrimp tempura in addition to what was mentioned. Been coming here during Covid to get my sushi fix. I am really happy with the quality of fish and the service provided. Upon arrival at Tachikawa, there is a small space to pay for your order. The door to this space is glass, so you can tell if someone is inside or not. Which allows you to social distance. Every time I phone in my order, my food is ready within 15-20 mins. And I never had to wait. Parking is abundant. And if there are several people waiting for their food, most just park right outside and wait in their cars. I believe they take orders in shop. But if you want to avoid exposure to anyone else, I recommend just calling. I've never had any problems. I haven't tried any hot or fried food. Just sushi rolls. We were extremely underwhelmed... the restaurant is a nice size and roomy so you aren't touching elbows with other patrons, but the decor is lacking. Hostess was quite accommodating with questions and answers etc.. the chef was not willing to make changes to any rolls though... considering the menu is lacking in variety.. we found that quite surprising. After seriously contemplating a departure and finding another location we decided to just see it through and at least taste the dishes. We should have walked. The flavors were nothing to brag about, no extra mouth melting pop, and the plating was the sloppiest I have seen in the entire bay area. It's like a California roll topped with fish like a Rainbow Roll but then three types of caviar, a spicy mayo sauce and crushed macadamia nuts. I love it. I accidentally place a takeout order at this restaurant instead of the sushi restaurant I normally go to, and I decided to go ahead and pick this order up so that they didn't waste their food because of my mistake. We ordered quite a bit of food and it was okay, definitely not the best sushi I've had. The most memorable part of the meal is that they do not treat the imitation crab. It appears that they take it out of the package and put it in the sushi roll. I don't know how it is prepared for the California roll because we did not order one, but the rolls that we did order that contained "crab' had the tubular imitation crab wrapped with the other items. I have come to expect that the crab is treated with some sort of mayonnaise or sauce that is sweet so that it cuts some of the spice or other flavors contained within the sushi roll. During COVID, they stayed open longer than most other restaurants, so if I ever wanted Sushi after 8pm, I would definitely go to them. The customer service was great. They were friendly over the phone and just as friendly in person. read more

We tried four rolls: Crazy Horse, Oh Yes, Nhi Mo, & Warren Cami. Everything tasted really fresh. We weren't the craziest about the Crazy Horse, but it still tasted fresh. I was taken on a date here this afternoon, and I ordered the teriyaki chicken bento box that comes with a California roll. The food tastes decent while eating it, but like 30 minutes after I finished the food, I started feeling extreme stomach cramps.
