Food and Service ++ I'm a fan of a good beans, rice, and cheese burrito. Oh & with sour cream of course. Sounds easy enough right? Not even close. I'm very particular about my beans and rice. I believe if you can make the staple foods taste so good with just the right flavoring then you probably make good food all the way around. Well I've been here a few times over the span of many years and they have consistently been good. I love the softness of a tortilla too, not firm or with any crunch to it. These are just what I like. I recently tried the Chile Relleno burrito because it's an alternative favorite and it was delicious. Some places have too much batter or they add a sauce with it. In a burrito, not a fan of the sauce. Taco de Mexico did not and I loved that. The cook who I'm pretty sure is the owner is always nice and gets things done quickly. He doesn't engage too much but is always very courteous. Another plus for me is that they open early. Upon moving up here I always found it interesting that the Mexican food restaurants don't open til 9 and later. I was used to the restaurants being open before sunrise. I know people can be fooled by appearance but story goes you will find some of the best food at the places you'd least expect it. While it's small there are at least 3 tables that can fit a party of 4 easily so you can sit down inside and enjoy. The parking lot though small, very small, is never packed. There is an empty lot next to it so I believe it houses some eye sores but they have nothing to do with the quality of the food or the experience. Don't let that deter you. I also like to add updates photos of the menu because that's one of the first pictures I look for. Things can change week to week. In my opinion and experience I recommend this place. read more

It is hard to rate fairly because I do not like spicy food and the tacos here are spicy even when you order mild. With that said, they have an extensive menu and the prices are affordable. - I got two carne asada tacos and the guacamole was free! Sadly, I did not care for the flavor or consistency of the guacamole. It was runny and flavorless. - The staff is welcoming and accommodating. I found parking easily in the back for free. There are indoor tables but I find the decor to be lacking. I think if you want inexpensive, super casual and spicy Mexican food, you may like this little spot. read more

Still is my favorite Mexican joint in town. Best Asada, lean and flavorful. They don't skimp on portions here! Their rice is super yummy too. Nice picnic tables to eat at and watch the cars go by. The food itself was good but the service was a little frustrating. I ordered a quesadilla and someone who came in after me ordered a burrito and got their food first. I don't mind waiting, but it felt like my order was overlooked even though I had ordered before them. It would make the experience much better if the orders were handled consistently. My husband and I stopped here for breakfast on the way home from SLO. It's a small place, not far from the Charles Paddock Zoo. It was early but there were already guests enjoying the breakfast burritos. We each ordered the breakfast plates. His with chorizo, and mine with ham. ($13.99) The meal included eggs, rice & beans, a small salad, and three tortillas. Delicious salsa, onions, cilantro, and cheese were sprinkled nicely across the meal. We were both amazed at how delicious everything was. Very fresh and authentic. There was more food than either of us could eat, but we both agreed it was worth taking what remained home. The establishment was clean and the service was wonderful. If you are passing through this area, we highly recommend you stop in for a quick delicious meal. Sorry for not taking pictures. This is the spot. Maybe one of the only spots where you can order menudo on the weekend. Those others kick the can....oh we don't have it lah lah lah. We had some of the best menudo which had the tripe cut to small pieces. Lazy menudo is when you get those huge piece that you need to cut with scissors. Sorry Efrens in SLO... Took our order down incorrectly. The order that came out was incorrect. Staff wasn't friendly. When I explained the order was wrong she grabbed the ticket and read off the order (that she wrote on the ticket) confuses. I explained that there was a miscommunication with the order, she remained confused. She didn't offer to fix the order, I left. We won't support the business again. The restaurant is small, cramped, dirty. Flies buzzing, exposed food, and crowded with people. No social distancing in order. I've come around to Taco de Mexico slowly but surely. It's all about finding what you really enjoy and while I do enjoy a carne asada burrito at other Mexican food places, the carne asada quesadilla here has been the real standout for me. It's the equal parts cheese to carne asada and it's incredibly filling. There's not too much seating inside as it is a bit cozy, but there are a couple of tables outside. Parking is a nightmare, but parking at the gas station is a good alternative to backing out of parking spots very awkwardly. read more

Burritos are yummy. Carne Asada and Chile Verde are favorites and the veggie is good too. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is the lack of consistency. While the Burritos are always good.... the amount of ingredients in them vary. Definitely go with the hot sauce! read more

This place does not know how to take orders. I went two days in a row. I asked for no salsa or hot sauce on the tacos both times I picked up the order to go. When I got home I had hot sauce and salsa on the tacos. I called three days later because it was fathers day weekend and I took my dad out of town. When I called the women who answered the phone told me there was nothing I could do about it because I should have taken the tacos back right away. This was a little hard to do since I live 1o miles from there. I told her I had the credit card I used and maybe I could get tacos done right. She told me it was too late to do anything about my orders THAT WERE NOT DONE RIGHT in the first place. I paid eight dollars for a veggie burrito without cheese or sour cream. I tipped two dollars. It may have been the worst bean and rice burrito I've ever had. Completely tasteless. There were no veggies other than iceberg lettuce. I didn't see any onions or cilantro, no pico de gallo. Barely any guacamole. The beans weren't drained so it was completely sopping wet and without flavor. I asked for spicy but couldn't detect any heat. Taco Bell makes a better burrito. Yes it's a total dive, but a clean one. Tiny too, 5 booths and two tables outside, which is about right for what the tight parking lot can handle (wide spaces, though). They have bottled beers. I had a chile relleno plate which I think is the most expensive thing on the menu at 9.50, and it was very satisfying. Rice and beans and a little mini salad with a slice of tomato, sour cream, and guacamole with a nice little kick. The chile relleno itself was not very spicy, and not overly greasy as they sometimes are. Served with 4 tortillas on the side that were steamy and soft. And they're open till 9, which is not altogether common here especially in fast food. So nothing to complain about at all, the burritos are 6.25 so you don't have to spend a lot. Anyone can make a good expensive restaurant but a cheap good place takes talent. read more

It's been 10 hours since eating & my stomach is getting worse. Cheese enchiladas- worse food I ever tasted. My table of 4 all tried, i should have captured the look of their faces. The red sauce is black & was seasoned with sugar instead of salt? Tasted like fruitcake. Wth? Chili relleno- deep fried, flash frozen, then microwaved 4 years later. The only detectable flavor was lard. Couldn't taste the chili or cheese or sauce, just grease. Asada street taco- asada, cilantro, & onion all cooked on the grill together, scraped off (along with anything else stuck to the grill) & this glob is slid on the tortilla. Awful. Beans- boiled into bland, flavorless oblivion. Rice- not terrible. I can't tell. It was great compared to the rest of my plate, but I don't think it was legitimately good. Don't go. Seriously. It's $10 a person & the soda is even flat. read more

If I could rate this location as a 0 I would. We came all the way from Fresno to enjoy Memorial Day at the bay. We were in the mood for some Mexican food and decided to stop here. The salsa, if I can even call it that, was oily, tasteless, and smelled like barbecue sauce?? The carne asada tacos were on uncooked white tortilla and tasted like reheated beef jerky. The carnita tacos tasted like rubber chicken. The total for 4 people came out to $50. We spent our lunch roasting this food in the car. 10/10 would not recommend. I absolutely love this place. Tonight I got the special, it was Chile Colorado burrito for 5.75. Since I was on the fence about the burrito the lady taking my order let me sample the meat first. That was awesome. I accepted this burrito right away! She even let me add cheese. If you want traditional and good greasy home made mexican food, come here. Well is it now over three years since my initial review. They still have it going on here at Taco De Mexico! Yep. Good Chili Verde Tacos today. Chunky, rich, lean, piled high and oh so flavorful. Tacos de Mexico is still my go to place for great tacos, wonderful burritos, and tasty taquitos. Friendly, nice people, order in Spanish helps, daily specials and the price is right. I love the little tacos they are so good, and the big problem is my taste buds want more of the wonderful flavors and my tummy is FULL. Oh the problems of good food and giving your mouth a good time and keeping the inches off the waist. I know it is a personal problem and I will deal with it, Just give me one more taco, please! read more

NASTY, nasty, Naaasty... I can generally overlook the outward appearance of a place and have found some great dives that offer delightful grub. This place? not so much. The building is grungy, the parking lot poorly designed, we ended up parking in the dirt next to the exit. The interior is kinda sticky and very dated. The pictures of the food are not very appetizing. (We have now institued a "safe" word that means "Let's leave" because of this place) I ordered the sampler plate (mexican plate) my honey ordered the Enchilada plate. (just under $20) The food came out and looked off. My boyfriend HATES guacamole with a feverent passion. The food was drenched in what can only be described as baby poo green sauce ever. It had bright green dots in it..He eyeballed it, so I tasted it hoping that it might be green sauce or something. Nope..it was the runniest guacamole I have ever had the displeasure of sampling. Not only that but it must have had a LOT of cilantro and jalepeno in it cause my mouth burned with the over-green flavor of cilantro. I couldn't detect any avocado and was generally sorry for my boyfriend since half the plate was now "contaminated" (the pictures DO not show guac on anything) I was starving and a little shakey (I'm type 2 diabetic) So, I tasted the beans and rice.. they weren't bad. I then tried the chicken taco. It was very small, the meat very dry and seasoned oddly. My nose was running at this point, and I knew I might be in trouble. I poked at my cheese enchilada about the same time he tried his enchilada. With the first bite, i cocked my head. It was very weird , it took me a moment to pinpoint what exactly the problem was. We looked at each other and said, "Cinnamon?" YUCK! They had overpowered the sauce with a LOT of cinnamon. He said his was very dry and picked it open to reveal that there was no sauce or cheese inside the enchilada. It was just dry meat. Mine was a cheese enchilada and had a lump of cheese in the middle. He poked at it for a few while I sampled the chili Relleno. The Relleno was meh, kinda flavorless and the coating was a little slimy. Needless to say we left our plates half eatin at most and went to Carl's Jr. Later that night we both ended up a bit sick to our stomachs. read more

This is my favorite taqueria around. I have been coming here for probably 12 years getting the carne asada tacos. The perfect blend of chewy, salty, spicy, with lemon or lime. Oh man. They have established my baseline for what a street taco is supposed to be. Their hard shell tacos have a spicy guacamole that is just too good.
