I used to work very close to this place and would stop in a couple times a month. Service was always friendly and they had lunch specials daily. My favorites are the chimichanga plate and the Chili Rellenos. Very generous portions for both and they were both delicious. This place was 5 star for a very long time, but covid killed that. Post covid prices doubles and portions were half of what they were. The food was still good, but just not a good deal. A few years back, the owner retired and his boys took over. Prices doubles again and they started cutting corners with quality. Staples I had for years started tasting nothing like they used to and the food just became inedible. Taco shops should be cheap and when I can go to a full service restaurant for less, it's game over and it's cheap to pick any one of the full service restaurants in the area. The food was mid at best. I ordered the asada plate, and for $28 I expected at least a decent portion. Instead, I got the smallest arrachera I've ever seen, maybe 6 oz max. The beans tasted sour, the rice was terrible, the onions on the plate were almost raw, the guacamole was completely tasteless, and the pico de gallo tasted old. The corn tortillas were ridiculously small, literally the size of the palm of my hand. Overall, everything felt old, and the spicy stuff wasn't spicy at all. Service was just as bad. The guy working the counterwas nice but seemed more interested in talking to the kitchen staff than actually attending customers. I was there for around 40 minutes, and not once did he check on me or anyone else to see if we needed anything. When I asked for more tortillas, they charged me $2. The place itself looks old, which wouldn't be an issue if it were clean. Unfortunately, it isn't. The salsa bar was completely unattended and looked gross. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. My partner loves carne asada fries. The first time I bought them from here they were about $15 the next time I went, they were about $20. That's a big change in price in less than a year. The guacamole and chips are $5 and you literally get about an ounce of guacamole. Literally. That price has also gone up, and the guacamole amount was cut in half. Not usually a big reviewer but the chicken tortilla soup was beyond excellent. I ordered from Uber Eats. Cheese quesadilla, grilled veggie burrito, chicken tortilla soup and strawberry churros. The quesadilla was fine, hard to mess that up, but trust I've had messed up ones. The grilled veggie burrito was tasty as well. Perfect combo of beans, rice, veggies. sour cream and quac so it was neither too soggy or too dry. I could've done without the churros - they were meh - not bad just didn't like the sauce. They would've been fine plain. But the soup was the show stopper- it has me craving it everyday! Perfect bites of chicken -Since, I'm more vegetarian than carnivore it was perfect for me without being overwhelming, spiced and season just right, firm bites of avocado and nice size tortilla chips! Crap. This review would have gone a completely different direction if myself and my daughter hadn't gotten food poisoning. D: As their food was actually pretty tasty. (We like to make our own little vegetarian burritos)! At least no meat was consumed...it could have been a lot worse!!! So here we are feeling fine...night time comes, time to get ready for bed. Suddenly I have a rock in my stomach and I feel like I'm going to die. No other symptoms. Literally my daughter comes to me and tells me she's feels like she's going to faint. Dizzy to the point of the room upside down on her. She even started crying, she was concerned. :( she is not a...how do I say it...emotional girl, for the most part. And then, within minutes, my head decides to dizzy upside also. It was very scary!!! Vertigo!!! Tears for sure, it's no fun feeling hungover with no alcohol involved. :( (well that's no fun either duh) We both had to lay down with our dizziness consuming us. Hi there - I'm editing my review of Taco Del Rey as they have returned to what I saw as their "former" glory - and they are once again our favorite local restaurant. Please note, they have the same nice gentleman cooking the food as when it was under the previous ownership. Case in point - recently we were on out of the country for an extended period of time, and my family kept commenting that we wished we could eat there. Couple additional notes: - When in a hurry to go to a $3 movie close by, we'll often call our order in. Happy valentines day! It fell on a Tuesday decided to get the tacos with the rice and beans special for under $7, with guacamole. Easily some of the best tacos in Renton! The beans and rice don't look special, but wow taste flavorful like cooked with the meat or something secret. The salsa I got both of the hot ones they were actually hot. It might be a hole in the wall, but it's a darned good hole in the wall. Taco Del Rey is a Mexican place that has very good food for not a whole lot of money. They do lots of down-home Mexican cooking, from tasty little tacos to an excellent chorizo con huevos to my hands-down favorite, the wonderful chile verde. They have a salsa bar with a lot of homemade fresh salsas that focus a lot more on flavor than on heat (though, watch out for the regular salsa--it builds to a very sweet burn!). Also on the salsa bar are amazing spicy pickled carrots. Those are so good, and very easily my favorite part of a visit to Taco Del Rey. They carry a variety of Mexican sodas for those who want to go with something other than your everyday sodas. It's small and very popular with the lunch crowd, so get there early if you want a table. read more

I've lived in the area my whole life and don't know why I have not stopped by this place sooner - i'll be honest, we were heading for Herfy's when we saw that Taco Del Ray had the hawks game on, but we were VERY pleasantly surprised by the food, prices and service! I actually didn't eat it until about 4 hours after I ordered it, but when I went at it, it was still pretty good. Everything was tightly rolled and no excess juices, so it was not soggy...even with the sour cream in there! My son had a asada burrito, which was good as well. The kids chicken quesadilla was great sized and greatly priced. Included a side of rice and beans and they did not skimp on the chicken. Forgot a fork though so we had to use the quesadilla to eat the rice and beans since we were on a plane Bonus - we didn't get the runs from eating unrefrigerated food to those of you thinking omg! Some of the folks around work had brought back burritos a week or so back, and I figured "why not?" Small location, good ambiance, but definitely packed. A packed restaurant is a good thing... even if there aren't many "sit down" places in the area. I quickly surveyed the menu, settled on a wet carne asada burrito, and put my order in. I had to wait only about 5 minutes, if that, for my burrito and chips to be prepped, packed, and ready to go. And this was at noon, so right in the middle of a lunch rush! I took it back to work to enjoy and immediately upon opening the burrito, I was impressed that it was as big as my hand. For the $9 that I paid for the burrito and chips, I already felt pretty good. A burrito is a burrito any way that you eat it. I've been all over and had burritos in a lot of great burrito places. Taco Del Rey? I'd rank it amidst some of the best that I've had. Great seasoning, good tender beef, and the salsa for the chips was very well seasoned and super fresh. My only "complaint" about the food is the ratio of the filling, sadly. When I order a beef burrito, I expect there to be a sizeable amount of beef in there. I would guess that the ratio of beef to rice was 1:2 -- twice as much rice as beef. So while it was filling, I kept wishing that there was more beef. I know its about the same as what you'd get most other places, but I think because the carne asada was smaller chunks of it rather than longer strips like I get at other places? Well, that might have been it too. The complaint that I have unrelated to the food is the location. A hard to navigate lot with Jimmy John's drivers navigating it all freaky fast, so you need to be careful. That, and people turning in and out of the extremely cramped lot and not looking where they're going, pulling in down the middle of a 2 lane entrance/exit! So highly recommend. Great price and speed.
